Remote Management Accountant Jobs: Skills and Requirements for Nigerian Applicants
What remote management accountant jobs require: skills, CIMA, ICAN, ACCA or CMA, experience, software, and how Nigerians can check eligibility and time zones.

Remote management accountant jobs usually ask for three things: a professional qualification (or solid progress towards one), at least three years of hands-on management reporting, and confidence with spreadsheets and an ERP system. If you can prepare monthly management accounts, explain variances against budget and reconcile entities that trade in different currencies, you already have most of what the job is about.
The harder part for Nigerian applicants is usually eligibility, not skill. Many remote finance roles are limited to certain countries or time zones, and "EMEA" doesn't always mean Nigeria. This guide sets out the skills and qualifications remote employers actually list, how ICAN, CIMA, ACCA and the US CMA fit those requirements, how to read location rules, and how to set yourself up in Nigeria so a foreign finance team can trust you with month-end. All requirements quoted here come from job ads and official pages we opened in October 2026.
Quick answer
To get a remote management accountant job you typically need an accounting degree, a chartered or professional qualification such as ICAN, ACCA, CIMA (CGMA) or CMA, three or more years of experience producing management accounts, budgets and variance analysis, strong Excel skills, and ideally experience with an ERP system such as NetSuite or SAP. Applicants in Nigeria should check that each ad allows them to live in Nigeria and fits their working hours.
What a remote management accountant actually does
A management accountant produces financial information for people inside the business, such as the CEO, department heads and the board, rather than for tax authorities or shareholders. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics describes management accountants (also called cost, corporate or private accountants) as people who combine accounting and financial information to guide business decisions, mainly for internal use by managers (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook).
The work itself is the same whether you do it remotely or in an office. What changes is that everything happens in writing and on shared systems. A remote management accountant typically:
- Closes the books each month and prepares management accounts (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow) to a deadline.
- Prepares balance sheet reconciliations and supporting schedules.
- Compares actual spending with budget and writes up the reasons for variances.
- Builds or updates budgets and rolling forecasts with department heads.
- Reconciles intercompany balances when a group has entities in several countries and currencies.
- Prepares year-end audit files and answers auditors' questions.
- Picks up ad hoc analysis: product costing, pricing, headcount cost, scenario models.
These tasks aren't invented. A remote Management Accountant ad from Carry1st, posted on 29 June 2026 with the location given as Nigeria (Remote), listed monthly income and expenditure schedules, balance sheet reconciliations, overhead analysis with variance explanations against budget, intercompany reconciliations including FX adjustments across entities in different currencies, finance policy work and year-end audit files (Carry1st job ad via Bitkraft careers board). As of October 2026 that ad is closed, but it gives a realistic picture of what an employer hiring in Nigeria expects.
How it differs from neighbouring finance roles
Job titles in finance overlap a lot, and remote employers don't always use them the same way. This table shows the usual split.
| Role | Main output | Typical audience |
|---|---|---|
| Management accountant | Monthly management accounts, variances, budgets | Internal managers |
| Financial accountant | Statutory accounts, audit, tax filings | Regulators, investors |
| FP&A analyst | Forecasts, models, scenario planning | Leadership |
| Bookkeeper | Transaction recording, basic reconciliations | Accountant or owner |
In small and mid-sized companies one person often covers both management and financial accounting, so read the duties rather than relying on the title. A "Senior Accountant" ad can be mostly management reporting, and a "Management Accountant" ad can include statutory work. If you're earlier in your career, our guide to the bookkeeper role shows the step below. Our accountant career guide covers the broader profession.
Skills remote employers list for management accountants
We read the requirements in the ads we opened, and they fall into three groups. Technical skill gets you shortlisted. Systems skill shows you can work without someone beside you. Written communication is what convinces a manager in another country that you can be trusted remotely.
Technical accounting skills
- Month-end close and management reporting. You run the close to a timetable and produce a pack the finance lead can send straight to the CEO.
- Variance analysis. Explaining why marketing came in 18% over budget is more valuable than reporting that it did.
- Budgeting and forecasting. This means building the annual budget and updating forecasts as the year goes on.
- Costing. You'll need to work out unit economics, gross margin by product, and overhead allocation.
- Reconciliations, including intercompany and multi-currency. This is where Nigerian accountants with pan-African group experience often have an edge, because they've already dealt with naira, cedi or shilling entities rolling up into a dollar or sterling group.
- IFRS awareness. Most groups outside the US report under IFRS, which ICAN and ACCA training already cover.
The US CMA syllabus is a useful checklist for this group. The Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) lists its 12 competency areas as external financial reporting, planning, budgeting and forecasting, performance management, cost management, internal controls, technology and analytics, financial statement analysis, corporate finance, business decision analysis, enterprise risk management, capital investment decisions and professional ethics (IMA CMA page).
Excel, ERP and accounting software
Excel is not optional. Oyster's Senior Accountant (EMEA) ad, for example, asked for strong Excel skills with pivot tables, XLOOKUPs and formulas, and listed ERP experience with NetSuite, SAP or similar as a plus, along with Google Workspace (Oyster Senior Accountant ad on the Stripes job board).
Here's what to aim for, roughly in order of how often it comes up:
- Excel or Google Sheets at an advanced level: XLOOKUP or INDEX/MATCH, pivot tables, SUMIFS, simple Power Query, and a tidy model another person can audit.
- An ERP: NetSuite is common in software and start-up companies, SAP and Oracle in larger groups, and Microsoft Dynamics in between. Many Nigerian companies run Sage, which is still good evidence that you understand an ERP.
- Cloud accounting: Xero and QuickBooks Online appear in smaller company and agency roles.
- A reporting tool: Power BI or Tableau isn't always required, but it makes your management pack look far more modern.
If you've only used one system, say so honestly and show you learn quickly. A short Loom video walking through a model you built does more than a list of software names.
Communication skills for remote finance work
Remote finance teams depend on written updates. The Oyster ad asked specifically for clear communication with non-finance stakeholders and fluent English. In practice that means:
- Writing a five-line commentary on the monthly numbers that a non-accountant understands.
- Raising a problem early in Slack or Teams rather than waiting for a call.
- Documenting your close process so someone else could follow it.
Qualifications: ICAN, CIMA, ACCA or CMA?
Most remote management accountant ads ask for a recognised professional qualification. Some say "Chartered Accountant" (as the Carry1st ad did), some name CIMA or ACCA, and US companies sometimes mention the CMA or CPA. Here's how the main options compare for remote applicants. For a fuller comparison, see the best accounting certifications for remote jobs.
| Qualification | Body | Best fit for |
|---|---|---|
| ACA (ICAN) | Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria | Nigerian and pan-African employers |
| ACMA, CGMA (CIMA) | AICPA and CIMA | UK, Commonwealth and global management roles |
| ACCA | Association of Chartered Certified Accountants | UK and international employers generally |
| CMA | Institute of Management Accountants (US) | US companies, management focus |
CIMA and the CGMA designation
CIMA is the qualification built specifically around management accounting. The official route has an optional Certificate in Business Accounting for people with no accounting background, then three levels: Operational, Management and Strategic. You must pass the objective tests for all competencies at a level before you can sit that level's case study exam, and case studies run four times a year. To become a member (ACMA, with the CGMA designation) you also need at least three years of verified practical experience, signed off by a supervisor (AICPA and CIMA, CGMA qualification page).
AICPA and CIMA set exam fees in tiers by region, and its October 2026 tier document groups Sub-Saharan Africa as Tier 3, the lowest-cost tier (AICPA and CIMA tier countries for exam fees). That document doesn't list Nigeria by name, so confirm your tier and current fees in your CIMA account before you budget. We haven't quoted fee amounts because the official page we opened didn't show them.
The US CMA
The CMA has two exam parts, which can be taken in either order. Only active IMA members can earn it. You need a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution (or a related professional certification) and two continuous years of management accounting or financial management experience. You must pass both parts within three years of enrolling. The exams are computer-based at Prometric test centres worldwide, in January/February, May/June and September/October windows (IMA, how to earn the CMA). Check Prometric for the nearest centre to you and current fees before you enrol.
Which one should you pick?
If you already hold ICAN or ACCA, you probably don't need a second qualification to start applying. Employers asking for a "chartered accountant" will usually accept either. CIMA makes most sense if you want to stay in management accounting and FP&A long term and target UK or global groups. The CMA is worth considering if you're aiming mainly at US companies. Whichever you choose, part-qualified candidates can still apply for many roles, so don't wait until you've finished every paper.
Experience requirements: what the ads actually ask for
Remote management accountant jobs are rarely entry level. The two ads we examined illustrate the range:
| Ad (date checked) | Experience asked | Other requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Carry1st, Management Accountant (closed, October 2026) | 3+ years | Accounting degree, Chartered Accountant qualification |
| Oyster, Senior Accountant EMEA (closed, October 2026) | 5+ years, 1+ as Senior Accountant | Strong Excel, SaaS experience, fluent English |
Remote employers hire experienced people for this role because nobody is sitting nearby to check your journals. If you have under three years of experience, the realistic route is to build it in a Nigerian finance team (ideally in a group with foreign entities), in a bookkeeping or accounts role with a foreign company, or as an assistant accountant at a firm that outsources accounting for overseas clients. Our guide to remote accounting jobs for Nigerians covers the more junior options.
Can you apply from Nigeria? Reading the location rules
You can, when the employer allows applicants who live in Nigeria and the role's time zone suits you. Plenty of remote management accountant ads don't allow it, so check the location section before you spend an hour tailoring your CV.
The ads we opened show the patterns you'll come across:
- Nigeria named directly. The Carry1st ad listed Nigeria with a remote work type. This is the clearest case.
- A region plus a country list. The Oyster Senior Accountant ad said "EMEA" and listed countries including Egypt, Kenya and South Africa, but not Nigeria, with a requirement to be based within UTC+3 to UTC−4. Nigeria (UTC+1) fits the time-zone band but isn't on the list, so you would need to ask the recruiter before applying. Our explainer on what EMEA means in a job ad goes further into this.
- Single country only. Many UK management accountant roles marked "remote" or "hybrid" mean remote within the UK and require the right to work there.
- Worldwide. Some contractor roles accept anyone, often hired through an employer of record or as an independent contractor.
When an ad is unclear, send a short message: "I'm a chartered accountant based in Lagos, Nigeria (WAT, UTC+1). Is this role open to candidates in Nigeria?" It saves both sides time. For a step-by-step method, see how to verify whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents.
Time zones and month-end
Month-end is when time zones hurt most, because deadlines are fixed. Nigeria is on West Africa Time (UTC+1) all year:
- UK employers: Lagos is one hour ahead of London in winter (GMT) and on the same time in summer (BST). A 9am to 5pm UK day means 10am to 6pm in Lagos from late October to late March.
- European employers: Lagos is on the same time as Central Europe in winter and one hour behind in summer. This is about as easy as it gets.
- US East Coast employers: Lagos is 6 hours ahead in winter (EST, from 1 November 2026) and 5 hours ahead in summer. Overlapping with a New York controller's morning means working roughly 3pm to 11pm in Lagos during close week.
UK, European and pan-African groups are the most natural fit for a Lagos-based management accountant.
How much do remote management accountants earn?
Pay varies widely, so treat any single figure with caution. As a benchmark, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual pay for all accountants and auditors (including management accountants) at $83,680 in May 2025 (BLS). That's about ₦114 million a year at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026).
That figure is what US-based employees earn in the US. It is not what a Nigeria-based remote hire is likely to be offered. Companies hiring from Nigeria usually pay well below US local rates, often in dollars or pounds through a contractor or employer-of-record arrangement. Pay depends on the employer's home market, how far through your qualification you are, the size of the group you'll report for, and your contract type (contractor or employee). Neither ad we opened published a salary. For pay ranges and how to compare offers, see how much remote accountants earn.
Setting up to work as a remote management accountant from Nigeria
Finance teams care about reliability more than most, because a missed close deadline affects the board pack. Before you start applying, make sure the basics are in place.
Power and internet
- An inverter with batteries, or solar, that can carry your laptop, router and a light through an eight-hour outage. Keep a generator only as a last resort.
- Two internet connections, for example a fixed or 5G broadband line plus a MiFi or phone hotspot on a different network. Starlink is available in Nigeria if your area has poor coverage, but check the current price first.
- A laptop that can run large Excel files and an ERP in a browser without freezing. 16GB of RAM makes a real difference with big models.
Getting paid and staying legal
- Contract type. You may be hired as an employee through an employer of record or as an independent contractor. The difference affects leave, benefits and tax, and our guide to contractor vs employee arrangements in Nigeria explains it.
- Receiving money. Dollar or pound pay usually arrives through Deel, Remote, Payoneer, Grey or a domiciliary account. Compare fees and FX spreads in our guide to receiving dollar payments in Nigeria.
- Tax. Earning from abroad doesn't take you out of the Nigerian tax system. As an accountant you'll be expected to handle your own affairs properly, so read how tax works for remote workers in Nigeria.
Data security
You'll handle payroll, bank details and confidential results. Use a password manager and two-factor authentication on every work account, keep work files off shared family computers, and use the company's VPN if it provides one.
How to position yourself for a remote management accountant role
- Map your experience to the ad's duties. For each line of the job description, write a matching example from your work: the close you ran, the reconciliation you fixed, the budget you built.
- Quantify your reporting. Mention how many entities, currencies or cost centres you handled, how many days your close took, and how you shortened it.
- Show your systems. Name the ERP, the reporting tool and your Excel level. Keep a sanitised sample of a management pack or model you can screen-share in an interview.
- State your location and hours on your CV. "Lagos, Nigeria (WAT, UTC+1). Available for UK hours." This removes doubt before a recruiter has to ask.
- Use the right CV format. Two pages, no photo, no date of birth, achievements first. For more on this, see our guide to writing a CV for international remote jobs.
- Prepare for a technical test. Expect an Excel case study (often a messy trial balance to turn into a P&L with variance commentary) and questions on accruals, prepayments, intercompany eliminations and FX revaluation. Our accountant interview questions are good practice.
Example (hypothetical): Weak CV bullet: "Responsible for monthly reporting." Stronger version: "Produced monthly management accounts for 4 entities (NGN, GHS, KES, USD), cutting close from 10 to 6 working days by standardising reconciliations in Excel and Sage."
Common mistakes and warning signs
- Applying to UK-only or US-only roles. "Remote" in a UK ad often means remote within the UK. Read the location line first.
- Listing software without evidence. "NetSuite" on a CV invites a NetSuite question in the interview. Only list what you can demonstrate.
- Ignoring time zones. Accepting a US role and then struggling through every close at midnight leads to burnout and missed deadlines.
- Leaving a qualification unexplained. If you're part-qualified, say exactly which papers or levels you've passed and when you expect to finish.
- Paying to apply. No genuine employer charges you a "processing", "training" or "software" fee to get a finance job. Be especially careful with "accounts" roles that ask you to receive and forward money: that's a classic money-mule scam. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria covers the warning signs.
Frequently asked questions
Can I work as a remote management accountant from Nigeria?
Yes, if the employer accepts applicants based in Nigeria. Some ads, such as Carry1st's June 2026 Management Accountant ad, named Nigeria directly. Many others are restricted to the UK, US or a list of countries. Check the location section of each ad, and ask the recruiter when it's unclear.
Do I need CIMA to get a remote management accountant job?
No. Employers often accept any recognised qualification, and ads commonly say "CIMA, ACCA or equivalent" or "Chartered Accountant", which ICAN members meet. CIMA is the most management-focused qualification, so it's worth considering if you want a long career in management accounting or FP&A with UK or global groups.
How many years of experience do remote management accountant jobs require?
Usually three years or more. The Carry1st ad we reviewed asked for 3+ years, and Oyster's Senior Accountant ad asked for 5+ years, including at least one as a Senior Accountant. Entry-level remote management accountant roles are rare, so most people build experience in an office or in a more junior remote accounts role first.
What software do remote management accountants use?
Excel or Google Sheets at an advanced level is nearly always required. ERPs such as NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics or Sage are common, along with Xero or QuickBooks in smaller companies. Power BI or Tableau is a plus. Check each ad, because the systems vary by company size and sector.
Is the US CMA recognised outside the United States?
The IMA says its certifications are respected by employers in over 140 countries, and CMA exams run at Prometric centres worldwide. The CMA is most useful when targeting US-headquartered companies. UK and Commonwealth employers tend to ask for CIMA, ACCA or a chartered qualification.
Can a part-qualified accountant get a remote management accountant job?
Sometimes. Some ads accept candidates who are studying towards CIMA or ACCA, especially for roles that report to a qualified financial controller. State exactly which levels you've completed, and expect to need strong practical experience to make up for the unfinished qualification.
Will I be paid in dollars or naira?
It depends on the employer. Foreign companies usually pay in dollars, pounds or euros through an employer of record, a contractor platform or a bank transfer, while Nigerian companies hiring remotely usually pay in naira. Confirm the currency, the payment method and who covers transfer fees before you sign.
Key takeaways
- Remote management accountant jobs centre on month-end close, management accounts, variance analysis, budgeting, forecasting and multi-entity reconciliations.
- Most ads ask for a professional qualification (ICAN, ACCA, CIMA or CMA) and at least three years of experience. This is rarely an entry-level remote role.
- Advanced Excel is essential, and ERP experience (NetSuite, SAP or similar) makes you much more competitive.
- Eligibility is the main obstacle for Nigerians. Confirm that each role allows Nigeria-based applicants, because "EMEA" country lists don't always include Nigeria.
- UK, European and pan-African employers suit WAT working hours best. US roles usually mean evening close weeks.
- US pay figures are benchmarks only. Offers for Nigeria-based hires are usually lower, so compare offers with care.
