Recruitment and people operations are the remote HR jobs that Nigerians land most easily. Employers with teams in many countries need these roles, and the work doesn't depend on knowing one country's labour law. HR generalist and HR manager jobs exist remotely too, but foreign companies usually hire those people in the country where their staff live. That makes them harder to get from Lagos or Enugu unless the company has a team in Nigeria or across Africa.
This guide ranks the remote HR jobs that suit Nigeria-based candidates. For each one, it explains the work, how open it is to applicants here and what experience employers ask for. It also covers why tech companies post most of these roles, how CIPM, CIPD and SHRM compare when the employer is foreign, what pay looks like, and the traps to avoid.
Quick answer
The best remote HR jobs for Nigerians are recruiter or talent acquisition specialist, recruitment coordinator, talent sourcer, people operations specialist, HR business partner for African or distributed teams, payroll specialist and learning and development roles. Most of these jobs are with tech companies. Many are contractor roles, and most want two or more years of experience. Before you apply, check that the ad names Nigeria, Africa, EMEA or worldwide.
How we chose these remote HR jobs
We ranked roles on three things:
- Access from Nigeria: whether the work can be done for people in other countries without local legal knowledge or local residence.
- Entry route: whether someone with Nigerian HR or admin experience can realistically move into the role.
- Pay ceiling: whether the role leads to well-paid senior work.
These criteria come from how remote HR work is set up, not from a count of job ads. We don't have reliable data on how many ads each role gets. Use the ranking as a guide to where your effort is likely to pay off, not as a market statistic.
Why some HR jobs travel across borders and others don't
HR splits into two kinds of work.
The first kind is tied to a country. Employee relations, disciplinary cases, statutory leave, pensions and terminations follow the employment law where the worker lives. A US company with staff in Texas wants an HR generalist who knows US law and can be reached in US hours. A Nigeria-based applicant is at a real disadvantage for that job, however good their CV.
The second kind can be done from anywhere. Finding candidates, scheduling interviews, running an applicant tracking system (ATS), onboarding new hires, keeping HR records up to date, building training and reporting on headcount all work the same for an engineer in Poland or a salesperson in Kenya. Distributed companies hire for this kind of work globally, and it's where Nigerians have the best odds.
There's an exception. When a company employs people in Nigeria or across Africa, it often wants HR staff who understand the Nigerian Labour Act, PAYE and pensions. Your local knowledge then becomes the reason to hire you.
The best remote HR jobs for Nigerians, ranked
| Role | Access from Nigeria | Typical experience asked |
|---|---|---|
| Recruiter / talent acquisition | High | 2+ years full-cycle |
| Recruitment coordinator | High | 0 to 2 years |
| Talent sourcer | High | 1+ year |
| People operations specialist | Medium to high | 2+ years |
| HR business partner (Africa or distributed teams) | Medium | 4+ years |
| Payroll specialist (African payroll) | Medium | 2+ years |
| Learning and development | Medium | 2+ years |
| HR generalist / HR manager (foreign staff) | Low | 5+ years plus local law |
The experience levels are our summary of what ads in each category usually ask for, not a measured average. Check each ad.
1. Recruiter or talent acquisition specialist
A recruiter, often called a talent acquisition specialist or partner, handles hiring from start to finish. That means writing the job ad, sourcing candidates, screening them, running interviews with hiring managers, making offers and keeping the ATS clean. Recruitment is the most remote-friendly HR job because candidates can live anywhere and every step happens on video calls and in the ATS.
Here's a live example. As of October 2026, InEvent, an events technology company, had a Talent Acquisition Advisor ad listed as fully remote in Lagos, Nigeria. The job is full-time, 40 hours a week, on independent contractor status. It requires fluent English, at least two years of full-cycle recruitment, ATS experience and your own laptop. The ad didn't state pay; it asks applicants for a salary expectation and currency. Check that the ad is still open before you apply.
Our remote recruiter career guide covers skills, tools and how to get hired. Pay is on the recruiter salary page. If you want to recruit engineers specifically, see how to become a remote technical recruiter.
2. Recruitment coordinator
Coordinators handle the logistics of hiring: booking interviews across time zones, sending candidate emails, preparing interview packs and updating the ATS. This is the most realistic entry point into remote HR for someone with admin, customer service or front-desk experience. The skills are organisation, clear written English and comfort with calendars. Our guide to remote recruitment coordinator jobs for beginners covers it in detail.
3. Talent sourcer
A sourcer finds and contacts potential candidates, usually on LinkedIn, GitHub or niche communities, and passes interested people to a recruiter. Sourcers are judged on results you can measure: how many people reply and how many reach interview. A Nigerian candidate can show those numbers in a portfolio even without a big-company name on their CV. See how to get a remote talent sourcer job.
4. People operations specialist
People operations ("people ops") is the admin and systems side of HR. It covers onboarding and offboarding, managing the HR information system (HRIS), handling contracts and documents, answering employee questions and keeping data accurate. Startups with staff in many countries often run people ops through an employer of record (EOR), a company that legally employs staff for them in each country. That means a people ops specialist coordinates with providers instead of applying each country's law personally, which makes the role more open to Nigeria-based applicants.
Start with our people operations specialist guide, and check pay on the people ops salary page.
5. HR business partner for African or distributed teams
An HR business partner (HRBP), also called a people partner, works with department heads on performance, workforce planning, team structure and leadership. It's a senior role. A Nigerian HRBP's best chance is a company that employs people in Nigeria or across Africa, because local labour knowledge then counts in your favour.
As of October 2026, Nigerian fintech Moniepoint's Greenhouse careers board listed several HR roles as remote in Nigeria. They included a Talent Acquisition Specialist role and an Early Careers Talent Acquisition Specialist role, both listed as remote in Lagos. Openings change often, so check the board for current HR and people partner roles.
6. Payroll specialist
Payroll specialists run monthly pay, deductions and payroll reports. Payroll is tied to tax rules, so remote payroll jobs from Nigeria usually involve Nigerian or African payroll (PAYE, pension and other statutory deductions) for companies with staff here, or work for payroll and EOR providers. If you already handle Nigerian payroll, this is a strong specialism. Read the payroll specialist career guide.
7. Learning and development
Learning and development (L&D) staff design onboarding programmes, run training and manage learning platforms. Remote L&D jobs often overlap with instructional design. If you can build courses in tools like Articulate Rise or a learning management system, also look at the instructional designer career path and our guide to remote learning and development jobs for HR professionals.
8. HR generalist and HR manager
Generalist and manager roles are the hardest to get remotely for staff abroad, because they need local legal knowledge and are often limited to applicants in the country. They're realistic from Nigeria when the employer has a Nigerian or African team. The HR generalist career guide and the HR generalist salary guide cover this. For the senior path, see how to become a remote HR manager.
Specialist roles worth knowing
Some HR specialisms pay well and are less crowded, but they need experience first:
- People analytics: HR data, dashboards and attrition analysis. See remote people analytics jobs.
- Compensation and benefits: salary bands, benchmarking and benefits design. See remote compensation and benefits jobs.
- HR compliance: policies and record-keeping across countries. See remote HR compliance jobs.
Remote HR jobs in technology companies
Most remote HR ads come from technology companies: software firms, fintechs and platforms whose staff are spread across countries. The reasons are practical. These companies hire constantly, they already work remotely, and they need recruiters and people ops staff who can hire and onboard in several countries.
HR in a tech company differs from HR in a Nigerian bank or manufacturer in a few ways:
- Tools come first. You're expected to work inside an ATS such as Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby or Workable and an HRIS such as BambooHR, HiBob, Rippling or Workday. You also communicate in Slack and Notion, not memos.
- Recruiting is technical. Technical recruiters need to know what a backend engineer does, what React and Python are, and how a coding assessment works. You don't need to code, but you do need to read a job spec and screen intelligently.
- Data matters. Tech HR teams track time to hire, offer acceptance rates and pipeline conversion. Put numbers like these on your CV.
- Writing replaces meetings. Much of the work is written, so clear, concise English in Slack and email counts as much as interview skill.
There are two kinds of tech employer to target. Nigerian and African tech companies (fintechs, logistics and edtech) often advertise remote HR roles within Nigeria and want local labour knowledge. Foreign startups with global teams hire recruiters and people ops staff for EMEA or worldwide coverage, often as contractors.
Certifications: CIPM, CIPD or SHRM?
You don't need a certification for most remote recruiting jobs; proven hiring results matter more. For HRBP, generalist and manager roles, certification helps, and the right one depends on where your employer is.
| Body | Best for | Key facts (as of October 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| CIPM (Nigeria) | Nigerian and African employers | Legally recognised HR body in Nigeria |
| CIPD (UK) | UK, European and global firms | Foundation to advanced levels |
| SHRM (US) | US employers | SHRM-CP / SHRM-SCP exams |
CIPM and CIPD now recognise each other
The UK's CIPD and Nigeria's CIPM signed a mutual recognition agreement on 17 September 2024. It gives CIPM members a shorter route to CIPD membership:
- CIPM Associate Members can become CIPD Associate Members.
- CIPM Full Members can become CIPD Chartered Members.
- CIPM Fellows can become CIPD Chartered Fellows.
The assessment is a 60-minute professional discussion on Microsoft Teams. As of October 2026, it costs £120 for Associate and Full Member candidates and £250 for Fellows, plus CIPD joining and membership fees. For a CIPM member who wants UK or European employers, this is one of the cheapest ways to get a credential they recognise.
CIPD's qualifications page lists foundation, associate and advanced qualifications. It also warns that you shouldn't be asked to pay for training as a condition of getting a job, and suggests using its qualification checker to confirm a training provider is real.
SHRM costs more and must be taken in person
SHRM's exam fees page (its Middle East and North Africa edition) lists the following for the testing window from 1 December 2026 to 15 February 2027:
- Standard registration (1 September to 24 December 2026): $399 for SHRM members and $499 for non-members.
- Early bird rates were $350 and $450, but the early bird window has closed.
- The exam must be taken in person at an authorised Prometric test centre. Remote proctoring isn't offered.
At WorkRemote's house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN, 23 October 2026), the $499 non-member fee comes to about ₦680,000. Fees can differ by region, so check the SHRM page for your country. SHRM is worth the cost mainly if you're targeting US employers.

What remote HR jobs pay
There's no reliable public data on what Nigeria-based remote HR workers earn, so treat these US figures as benchmarks, not offers.
| Occupation (US) | Median annual pay, May 2025 | In naira (₦1,362/$1) |
|---|---|---|
| HR specialists | $75,940 | about ₦103.4 million |
| HR managers | $149,280 | about ₦203.3 million |
Sources: US Bureau of Labor Statistics, HR specialists and HR managers, Occupational Outlook Handbook. Naira figures use WorkRemote's house rate from the CBN, 23 October 2026.
These are US medians for people working in the US. Remote HR workers based in Nigeria are usually paid well below them, often as contractors with a monthly dollar fee and no benefits. Pay depends on:
- Employer type: foreign startups usually pay more than Nigerian employers.
- Specialism: technical recruiting usually pays more than general recruiting.
- Seniority: senior roles pay more.
- Pay policy: whether the company pays one global rate or adjusts pay by location.
Our role salary pages show ranges in dollars and naira. To compare offers, see what recruiters earn in dollars.
Contractor or employee, and how you get paid
Many foreign employers hire Nigerian HR staff as independent contractors, as in the InEvent ad above, rather than as employees. Contractors usually invoice monthly, get paid through platforms like Deel, Remote or Payoneer, and handle their own tax. Some companies use an EOR to employ you formally with a payslip.
The difference affects leave, notice periods and tax. Our guide to contractor versus EOR employee status explains both. For getting paid, read how to receive dollar payments in Nigeria. For filing, see tax for remote workers in Nigeria.
Nigeria-specific things to plan for
Time zones
Recruiters work when candidates and hiring managers are awake:
- UK and European companies: these fit Nigeria well. In winter, London is one hour behind Lagos and Central Europe is on the same time.
- US companies: these mean afternoon and evening work in Lagos. From 1 November 2026, a 9am New York interview is 3pm in Lagos and a 9am San Francisco call is 6pm. In US summer, both are an hour later in Lagos terms (2pm and 5pm).
Be honest with yourself about whether you can keep evening hours every week.
Power, internet and privacy
HR work involves back-to-back video interviews and confidential conversations, so a call that drops is worse than in many other jobs. Plan for an inverter or solar backup and two internet connections, such as a fixed line or MiFi plus a phone hotspot. You also need a quiet room where nobody can overhear a salary or disciplinary discussion.
Handling personal data
You'll handle CVs, ID documents and salary data from people in several countries. Learn the basics of the data protection rules that apply to your employer's candidates, such as the EU's GDPR, and never store candidate documents on a personal phone or in a WhatsApp chat.
How to move into a remote HR job from Nigeria
- Pick one target role from the ranking above. Recruitment coordinator suits admin backgrounds, recruiter suits anyone who has hired, and people ops suits HR officers who run records and onboarding.
- Learn the tools. Many ATS and HRIS vendors offer free demos, training or free trials. Get hands-on with at least one ATS so you can name it on your CV.
- Turn your experience into numbers. For example, "filled 14 roles in 6 months, average 32 days to hire" beats "responsible for recruitment."
- Fix your CV and LinkedIn for foreign readers. Use a two-page CV with no photo and no date of birth. Our planned guide to writing a CV for remote HR jobs covers the format.
- Filter ads for location before anything else. Apply only where the ad names Nigeria, Africa, EMEA or worldwide.
- Prepare for structured interviews. Expect questions on your hiring process, stakeholder management and ATS use. Practise with our recruiter interview questions.
Example (hypothetical): Amaka is an HR officer at a Lagos logistics firm who has coordinated 40 interviews a month for two years. She targets recruitment coordinator roles at European startups. She takes a free ATS training course and rewrites her CV around scheduling volume and candidate experience, and she applies only to ads that say "EMEA" or "Nigeria". That route plays to her strengths and matches European hours.
Mistakes and scams to avoid
- Applying to US-only or UK-only HR generalist jobs. These usually require local residence or work authorisation. Check the location line first.
- Paying for "guaranteed placement" training. As noted above, CIPD warns you shouldn't be asked to pay for training as a condition of a job. A real employer doesn't charge you to be hired.
- Commission-only "recruiter" roles. Some agencies pay only when a candidate you place is hired. These can work for experienced recruiters but are risky for beginners. See remote recruiting jobs with commission.
- Fake "HR assistant" jobs. Some scams ask new "HR staff" to receive and forward payments or buy equipment with their own money. Read our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria.
Frequently asked questions
Can I work remotely in HR from Nigeria for a foreign company?
Yes, if the employer accepts applicants based in Nigeria. Recruitment, sourcing, recruitment coordination and people operations are the most accessible roles. Generalist HR jobs for staff in the US or UK usually require someone in that country.
Which remote HR job is easiest to get without experience?
Recruitment coordinator is the most realistic starting point, because it builds on admin and scheduling skills. Truly entry-level remote HR jobs are rare, so expect to need some admin, customer service or internship experience. Our planned guide to entry-level remote HR jobs covers starting routes.
Do remote HR jobs pay in dollars?
Many foreign employers pay Nigeria-based HR contractors in dollars, often through Deel, Remote or Payoneer. Nigerian employers usually pay in naira, even for remote roles. The ad or contract should state the currency, so confirm it before you accept.
Is CIPM recognised outside Nigeria?
CIPM membership now has a direct route to CIPD recognition under the mutual recognition agreement signed in September 2024. A CIPM Full Member can apply to become a CIPD Chartered Member through a 60-minute assessment. That makes CIPM much more useful with UK and European employers.
Do I need SHRM certification for remote HR jobs with US companies?
No, it isn't required for most recruiting jobs, where hiring results matter more. It can help for US-focused HRBP or generalist roles. As of October 2026, the exam costs $399 to $499 at standard rates and must be taken in person at a Prometric centre.
What tools should a remote recruiter know?
Learn at least one applicant tracking system (Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby or Workable), LinkedIn Recruiter or LinkedIn search, and a scheduling tool like Calendly or Google Calendar. Tech employers also expect Slack and Google Workspace or Microsoft 365. Name the tools you've used on your CV.
Why do tech companies post most remote HR jobs?
Tech companies hire often, already work remotely and have staff in many countries. They need recruiters and people ops staff who can manage hiring and onboarding across borders. Nigerian fintechs also advertise remote HR roles within Nigeria.
Key takeaways
- Recruiter, recruitment coordinator, talent sourcer and people operations roles are the remote HR jobs most open to Nigeria-based applicants.
- HR generalist and manager roles for staff abroad usually need local law knowledge or residence. They're realistic when the employer has a Nigerian or African team.
- Tech companies, both foreign startups and Nigerian fintechs, post most remote HR roles and expect ATS, HRIS and written communication skills.
- The 2024 CIPD–CIPM agreement gives CIPM members a cheap route to a UK-recognised credential. SHRM suits US targets but costs more and must be taken in person.
- US pay medians are benchmarks only. Nigeria-based remote HR workers are usually paid less, often as contractors.
