Yes, a beginner in Nigeria can land a remote recruitment coordinator job, but genuinely entry-level openings that accept Nigerian residents are uncommon. Most ads ask for one to three years of coordination or admin experience, and many are limited to the US. The coordinator role is still one of the most realistic doors into recruitment. The work is mostly scheduling interviews, writing to candidates and keeping hiring software tidy, and those skills carry over from admin, virtual assistant and customer support work.
This guide covers what a recruiting coordinator does day to day and how the role differs from a recruiter. It shows what the ads we opened in October 2026 required and paid, how to tell whether an ad accepts Nigerian applicants, and what US or UK working hours mean in Lagos time. It also covers the staffing coordinator title, which can be a very different job, and gives a step-by-step plan for proving you can do the work before anyone hires you.
Quick answer
Remote recruitment coordinators schedule interviews, act as the main contact for candidates, and keep the applicant tracking system (ATS) accurate. Beginners can qualify through admin, virtual assistant or support experience, along with a practical scheduling sample. In ads we checked in October 2026, roles open worldwide were rare and usually asked for some experience, while many US roles were open to US residents only. Always check where applicants may live before you apply.
What a remote recruitment coordinator actually does
A recruitment coordinator, also called a recruiting coordinator or talent acquisition coordinator, runs the logistics of hiring so that recruiters and hiring managers can focus on choosing people. Greenhouse, one of the most widely used ATS products, describes coordinators in its help article on hiring team roles as the people who "manage the coordination and scheduling of candidates in your pipeline". They are often the main point of contact between the company and the candidate. By default, Greenhouse assigns coordinators the interview-scheduling tasks and the tasks for sending take-home tests.
In a typical week, a remote coordinator:
- Books phone screens, video interviews and panel interviews across several calendars and time zones
- Sends confirmations, reminders, video links and rescheduling emails to candidates
- Chases interviewers for feedback and sets up debriefs
- Moves candidates through stages in the ATS and keeps records clean
- Posts job ads and sometimes does light sourcing
- Prepares offer letters or onboarding paperwork with HR
- Handles confidential information such as CVs, salary expectations and offer details
One recent US ad we opened (Health-E Commerce on Dynamite Jobs, closed as of October 2026) listed almost exactly these duties. It added administering Greenhouse (requisitions, pipelines and "data hygiene") and supporting employer branding.
Recruitment coordinator vs recruiter
A recruiter decides who moves forward. A coordinator makes sure the process happens on time. Recruiters source and screen candidates, run interviews, advise hiring managers and negotiate offers. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics groups recruiters under human resources specialists, who "find, screen, and interview job applicants". Coordinators sit one step earlier on that ladder. Many recruiters started as coordinators, which is why the role suits beginners. If you want the full recruiter path, read our guide to becoming a remote recruiter from Nigeria.
At small companies the line blurs. Workable's recruiting coordinator job description template includes sourcing, screening and even interviewing. When an ad lists those duties, the employer probably wants a junior recruiter who also does coordination, so expect higher experience demands.
Are remote recruiting coordinator jobs really open to beginners in Nigeria?
Some are, but fewer than search results suggest. When we searched ATS-hosted job boards (Greenhouse, Lever) and remote job boards in October 2026, the pattern was clear:
- Most recruiting coordinator ads were limited to one country, usually the US, and sometimes to a time zone.
- Several remote listings were reposts by aggregators covering Brazil, Spain, Australia, Canada and other countries, each restricted to that country.
- Ads open to Africa or worldwide existed, but they were rare and often asked for three or more years of experience.
- Many listings had already closed by the time we opened them.
Here are three ads we opened, to show what you will actually meet:
| Ad (checked October 2026) | Who can apply | Experience asked | Pay stated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Terac, Recruiting Coordinator (via Himalayas) | All countries, worldwide time zones | Entry-level | $20,000 to $50,000 a year |
| Health-E Commerce, Recruiting Coordinator (closed) | US residents only, Eastern Time hours | 3+ years | $24 to $28 an hour |
| Aarris, Staffing Coordinator | On-site, Los Angeles | Per diem staffing experience | $23 to $25 (period not stated) |
The Terac ad on Himalayas was posted on 15 October 2026 with an apply-by date of 14 December 2026. It says it is open to candidates from all countries. Note what kind of job it is. Terac is a very small AI market research startup (1 to 10 employees, according to the listing). The role coordinates a pool of experts for research projects and improves recruitment and onboarding funnels, and the company says it operates six days a week. That is participant recruitment for research, not classic interview scheduling. It is a real beginner opening, but read the full ad and ask about hours before you apply. Eligibility on live ads can change, so check the ad itself on the day you apply.
The honest summary: if you only apply to ads titled "Recruiting Coordinator" that say "worldwide", you will find very few. Widen your search to related titles and to employers that hire across Africa or EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa).
Titles to search besides "recruitment coordinator"
- Recruiting coordinator, talent acquisition coordinator, TA coordinator
- Interview coordinator, interview scheduler, recruiting scheduler
- Recruitment administrator, recruitment assistant
- Candidate experience coordinator
- HR coordinator or people operations coordinator (often includes recruiting support)
- Recruitment process outsourcing (RPO) coordinator, at firms that run hiring for other companies
You can save several of these as separate searches on the WorkRemote HR and admin job listings. Each listing there shows the company, its website and where applicants may live.
How to read location rules in a recruiting coordinator ad
The most expensive mistake a Nigerian beginner can make is spending an evening on an application the employer cannot legally accept. Check four things before you write a word:
- Location line. "Remote (US)", "Remote, United States" or "100% remote within the United States" means you are not eligible while living in Nigeria. The Health-E Commerce ad said exactly that.
- Time zone line. "Must work Eastern Time hours" or "PST overlap" doesn't always exclude Nigeria, but it tells you when you'll be working.
- Hiring arrangement. "Contractor", "via employer of record (EOR)" or "global payroll partner" usually means the company can pay people outside its home country. Our explainer on contractor and EOR employee arrangements covers what each means for your rights and pay.
- Country lists. Some ads list approved countries. If Nigeria isn't on the list, ask before applying rather than hoping.
Example (hypothetical): An ad reads "Remote, EMEA. Must overlap 4 hours with London." Nigeria is in EMEA and Lagos is close to London time, so this ad is worth a short, polite question to the recruiter: "I'm based in Lagos, Nigeria (WAT, UTC+1). Is this role open to candidates there?" One line like that saves both sides time.
Working hours: what US and UK coordinator hours mean in Lagos
Coordinators need to be online when candidates and interviewers are online, so time zone is not a small detail. Nigeria is on West Africa Time (WAT, UTC+1) all year, with no daylight saving. Here is what common shift requirements look like from Lagos:
| Employer hours | Lagos time (summer) | Lagos time (winter) |
|---|---|---|
| UK, 9am to 5pm | 9am to 5pm | 10am to 6pm |
| Central Europe, 9am to 5pm | 8am to 4pm | 9am to 5pm |
| US Eastern, 9am to 5pm | 2pm to 10pm | 3pm to 11pm |
| US Pacific, 9am to 5pm | 5pm to 1am | 6pm to 2am |
UK clocks went back on 25 October 2026 and US clocks go back on 1 November 2026, so the winter column applies from early November.
UK and European coordinator work fits a Nigerian day almost perfectly. US Eastern hours are workable if you're fine with a 3pm to 11pm shift. US Pacific roles, like the South Africa-based Lever ad we found that required Pacific hours Monday to Friday, mean working through the night from Lagos. Be honest with yourself about that before you accept. Scheduling errors pile up fast when you're tired.
What remote recruiting coordinators earn
Pay varies widely, and figures in US ads usually apply to US residents. Treat them as benchmarks, not as what you'll be offered from Lagos.
- Worldwide ad, entry level: Terac's Himalayas listing states $20,000 to $50,000 a year (as of October 2026). That is about $1,667 to $4,167 a month, or roughly ₦2.3 million to ₦5.7 million a month at WorkRemote's house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026). A range that wide usually means the final figure depends on experience and location.
- US-only ad, 3+ years' experience: Health-E Commerce advertised $24 to $28 an hour for US-based staff. New hires were generally offered between the bottom and the middle of that range.
- US official benchmark: the BLS gives a median of $75,940 a year (May 2025) for human resources specialists, a group that includes recruiters. Coordinators usually earn less than recruiters, and the BLS doesn't publish a separate coordinator figure.
Remote pay for Nigeria-based workers is usually below US local pay. Companies hiring contractors in Africa often pay a location-adjusted rate, and some pay a single global band. For a fuller view of pay once you move up, see our remote recruiter salary guide. If you're paid in dollars, our guide to receiving dollar payments in Nigeria compares the apps and their fees.
Remote staffing coordinator jobs: what to know
A staffing coordinator is not always the same job as a recruiting coordinator, even though people use the titles interchangeably. Read the duties, not the title.
In a company's in-house recruiting team, "staffing coordinator" usually just means recruiting coordinator: interview scheduling, candidate emails and ATS updates.
In a staffing agency, especially US healthcare staffing, a staffing coordinator fills shifts. The Aarris staffing coordinator ad we opened in October 2026 shows what that looks like:
- Filling daily per diem nursing shifts for local hospitals
- Making high-volume inbound and outbound calls
- Tracking nurses' certifications and credentialing
- Keeping personnel files current
- Recruiting and screening candidates, then managing onboarding
That job was on-site in Los Angeles, Monday to Friday, 8am to 4:30pm, with Spanish listed as a plus. Agency staffing coordinator roles like this often need local knowledge, phone work in the client's time zone and familiarity with that country's licensing rules. That makes them harder to do remotely from Nigeria.
Where staffing coordination does work remotely from Nigeria:
- Agencies or RPO firms that place staff for clients in the UK, Europe, the Gulf or Africa and run a remote back office
- Shift scheduling for remote teams such as customer support, content moderation or tutoring, where the "staff" are online too
- Freelance and project marketplaces that recruit and coordinate pools of contractors or experts (the Terac role is close to this)
If an ad mentions "per diem", "credentialing", "travel nurses" or "facility clients", expect US healthcare staffing and check the location line carefully.
Skills and tools employers ask for
Coordinator ads ask for a short, consistent set of skills. Employers rarely need a beginner to know employment law. They need someone who doesn't drop balls.
Core skills
- Calendar management under pressure: booking a five-person panel across three time zones, then rebooking it when two people cancel
- Clear written English: candidate emails that are warm, short and impossible to misread
- Attention to detail: the right candidate in the right stage, the right link in the right invite
- Discretion: CVs, salaries and offers are confidential
- Follow-up: chasing interviewers for feedback without annoying them
Tools you will meet
| Tool type | Common examples | What you do in it |
|---|---|---|
| Applicant tracking system | Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Workable, Workday | Move candidates, schedule, send emails |
| Calendar and video | Google Calendar, Outlook, Zoom, Google Meet | Book interviews, send links |
| Spreadsheets | Google Sheets, Excel | Track pipelines, report numbers |
| Team chat | Slack, Microsoft Teams | Coordinate with recruiters |
The O*NET profile for human resources specialists lists Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Zoom, Slack, Google Docs and Workday among the technology used in this field, and Workday is flagged as in demand. A Lever ad we found for a South Africa-based coordinator asked for familiarity with Greenhouse, Ashby, Lever and Workable.
You can't easily get a free account on an enterprise ATS. You can, however, read the vendors' public help centres (Greenhouse's is open), which teach the vocabulary ("hiring team", "interview kit", "scorecard", "stage"). Using that vocabulary correctly in an interview shows you've done your homework.
Do you need an HR degree?
Usually not for coordinator roles. Workable's template asks for a bachelor's degree in HR or a related field and "proven experience", and BLS says HR specialists typically need a bachelor's degree. But coordinator ads, including the entry-level Terac listing, focus on organisation, communication and tools. A degree in any field plus a proof-of-skill sample is a reasonable starting point. A certificate alone won't get you hired.
Handling candidate data responsibly
Coordinators touch a lot of personal data: names, phone numbers, CVs, sometimes ID documents and salary history. In Nigeria, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission enforces the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, which gives people rights over their data, including the right to be informed, to access their data and to have it erased. Foreign employers will also have their own rules (such as the UK and EU GDPR).
The practical habits are the same everywhere:
- Keep candidate data inside the company's ATS and email, not on WhatsApp or a personal Google Drive
- Never forward CVs to people outside the hiring team
- Lock your laptop and use a password manager and two-factor authentication
Mentioning these habits in an interview marks you out as someone who can be trusted with access to the hiring system.
How a beginner can get hired: a step-by-step plan
This plan assumes you have no recruiting experience but are organised and comfortable online.
- Pick your closest existing experience. Admin assistant, virtual assistant, customer support, school or church event coordination, NYSC CDS group organising, or a student association role all count. List every time you scheduled people, kept records or handled sensitive information.
- Learn the vocabulary of hiring. Spend a week reading an ATS help centre and two or three coordinator ads. Write down the words that keep repeating (pipeline, requisition, panel, debrief, scorecard, offer letter).
- Build a scheduling sample. This is the step most applicants skip (see the example below).
- Rewrite your CV around coordination. Put numbers on what you can: meetings booked a week, people supported, response times. Our sister article on writing a CV for remote HR jobs goes deeper on the HR CV.
- Apply to adjacent titles too. Interview scheduler, recruitment administrator, HR coordinator, and RPO firms that hire coordinators in batches.
- Prepare for the interview. Expect questions like "Tell me about a time a schedule fell apart" and "How do you handle a candidate who no-shows?" Our recruiter interview questions guide covers many questions coordinators also get.
- Plan your setup. A coordinator who goes offline during an NEPA outage leaves a candidate waiting on a video call. Have an inverter or solar backup and two internet options (for example, a MiFi plus a phone hotspot on a different network).
Example (hypothetical): a one-page scheduling sample
Create a fictional company hiring a "Customer Support Lead". Then produce:
- A Google Sheet showing four candidates, five interviewers and their working hours in London, New York and Lagos, with proposed slots shown in each person's local time
- Three candidate emails: an interview invitation, a reschedule after an interviewer cancels, and a polite rejection
- A short note on how you'd handle one candidate who hasn't confirmed after 24 hours
Link the sheet (view-only) in your CV or cover letter. A hiring manager can check your judgement on time zones and your tone in under five minutes. That is more than most beginner CVs offer.
Mistakes beginners make with coordinator applications
- Applying to US-only ads. Read the location line first. It saves hours every week.
- Selling yourself as a recruiter. Coordinator ads want reliability and organisation. Leading with "I can headhunt top talent" signals you've misread the role.
- Getting time zones wrong in your own emails. Write times with the zone ("3pm WAT / 2pm GMT"). One mistake in your application email ends it.
- Ignoring the hours. Accepting a Pacific-hours role and burning out in two months does more damage to your CV than waiting for a better fit.
- Paying to "get placed". Real coordinator jobs don't charge for training, equipment or onboarding. Our guide to remote job scams in Nigeria lists the warning signs. Fake "HR coordinator" ads that ask you to collect fees or documents from other applicants are a known pattern.
Where the coordinator role leads
Recruiting coordination is a starting point, not a dead end. Common next steps after one to two years:
- Recruiter or talent sourcer: finding and screening candidates yourself (see how to get a remote talent sourcer job)
- Recruiting operations: running the ATS, reports and process for the whole team
- HR or people operations: onboarding, HR admin and policies (see our people operations specialist career guide)
- Technical recruiting: hiring engineers, often among the better-paid recruiting work (see how to become a remote technical recruiter)
Frequently asked questions
Can I become a remote recruitment coordinator with no HR experience?
Yes, if you can show organisation and scheduling skills from other work. Admin, virtual assistant and customer support experience transfer well. A scheduling sample and a CV focused on coordination will help more than an HR certificate.
Is a recruitment coordinator the same as a recruiter?
No. A coordinator manages interview logistics, candidate communication and ATS records, while a recruiter sources, screens and decides who moves forward. At small companies one person may do both, and those ads usually ask for more experience.
What is a staffing coordinator, and is it the same job?
Sometimes. Inside a company's recruiting team, a staffing coordinator usually does recruiting coordination. In a staffing agency, especially US healthcare staffing, the job is filling shifts, making calls and tracking credentials. Those roles are often on-site or limited to one country.
Can Nigerians apply for US remote recruiting coordinator jobs?
Only when the ad accepts applicants outside the US. Many US coordinator ads say "remote within the United States", which rules out applicants living in Nigeria. Look for "worldwide", "EMEA", "Africa" or contractor/EOR wording, and ask the recruiter if it's unclear.
How much does a remote recruiting coordinator earn?
It varies widely. One worldwide entry-level ad we checked in October 2026 stated $20,000 to $50,000 a year. A US-only ad asking for three years' experience offered $24 to $28 an hour. Nigeria-based contractors are often paid below US local rates.
Which applicant tracking system should I learn first?
Greenhouse is a sensible first choice because it appears in many coordinator ads and its help centre is public. Lever, Ashby, Workable and Workday also come up often. Employers care more that you understand how hiring stages work than which tool you've used.
What hours will I work from Nigeria?
That depends on where the employer is. UK hours are 9am to 5pm in Lagos in summer and 10am to 6pm in winter. US Eastern hours are 2pm to 10pm in Lagos in summer and 3pm to 11pm in winter. US Pacific roles run into the early morning.
Is recruitment coordination a good first remote job?
For organised people who like working with others, yes. The skills are learnable, the work is visible to managers, and it leads naturally to recruiter, recruiting operations or HR roles. It suits people who handle interruptions calmly, because schedules change constantly.
Key takeaways
- Recruitment coordinators run hiring logistics: scheduling interviews, writing to candidates and keeping the ATS accurate.
- Entry-level coordinator ads open to Nigerian residents exist but are rare, so search related titles and always read the location line first.
- "Staffing coordinator" can mean in-house recruiting coordination or agency shift-filling. The agency version is often on-site or limited to one country.
- UK and European hours fit Lagos well. US Pacific hours mean overnight work.
- A practical scheduling sample and a CV focused on coordination are the strongest proof a beginner can offer.
- Treat US pay figures as benchmarks. Nigeria-based contractors are usually paid less.
