To get a remote talent sourcer job, you need to show that you can find the right people for a hard-to-fill role and get them to reply. A degree or a long HR CV matters less than that. Most first hires come from agency recruitment, HR or research work, or from a strong sourcing work sample, and the eligible roles tend to be contracts with startups, staffing firms and recruitment process outsourcing (RPO) providers.
The difficult part for applicants in Nigeria is eligibility. Many sourcer ads say "remote" and then limit applicants to one country. This guide explains what the job involves and how it differs from recruiting and candidate research. It covers the skills and tools employers name in real ads, what the pay figures actually mean for someone in Lagos or Enugu, and a step-by-step route that includes a work sample you can build this week.
Quick answer
A remote talent sourcer finds and contacts potential candidates, mostly people who aren't job hunting, and hands interested ones to a recruiter. You can do the job from Nigeria when the employer accepts Nigerian residents, which is usually as a contractor. You get hired by learning Boolean search, LinkedIn and GitHub searching and outreach writing, then showing those skills in a sourcing work sample before you apply.
What a talent sourcer does
A talent sourcer fills the top of the hiring funnel. A hiring manager says "we need a senior Python engineer who has built payments systems". The sourcer turns that into search strings, finds 50 to 150 plausible people, checks their profiles, writes personal outreach messages and books a short intro call with anyone who replies with interest. The recruiter then runs interviews, negotiates and closes the offer.
A 2026 Talent Sourcer contract ad from Remofirst (now closed) gives a typical list of duties: finding and engaging passive candidates, building pipelines, tracking response rates, writing outreach, doing first screens, keeping the applicant tracking system (ATS) up to date and reporting on which channels work. The same ad named the tools: LinkedIn Recruiter, Boolean search, GitHub, niche job boards, an ATS such as Lever or Greenhouse, and Hunter.io for finding email addresses (Remofirst Talent Sourcer ad).
The measure of the job is simple. Did your shortlist contain people the hiring manager wanted to speak to, and did enough of them reply?
Sourcer, recruiter and coordinator compared
People often confuse these three roles. Knowing the difference helps you pick the right ads and describe yourself correctly.
| Role | Main output | Typical entry route |
|---|---|---|
| Talent sourcer | Qualified, interested candidates | Research, agency or HR background |
| Recruiter | Hires closed and offers accepted | Often promoted from sourcer |
| Recruitment coordinator | Interviews scheduled, admin done | Admin or VA background |
If you like detective work and writing short persuasive messages, sourcing suits you. If you enjoy the negotiation and the "yes" at the end, see our guide to becoming a remote recruiter. If scheduling and organisation are your strengths, read about recruitment coordinator jobs for beginners.
Candidate research and recruitment researcher jobs explained
"Candidate researcher", "recruitment researcher" and "talent researcher" are other names for sourcing work, usually its research-heavy end. The titles are most common in executive search firms and in recruitment agencies that work for large clients.
A recruitment researcher typically:
- Maps a market, for example every head of finance at Series B fintechs in Europe, with their company, tenure and likely salary level
- Builds long lists and short lists for a consultant who handles the outreach and the client
- Checks backgrounds, career moves and public information before a candidate is approached
- Writes research notes in a spreadsheet or the firm's database
The difference from a sourcer is mostly how much outreach you do. A researcher may never message a candidate. A sourcer usually does. For someone in Nigeria, research-only roles can be a sensible entry point because they depend less on phone calls in the client's working hours. The trade-off is that pay tends to be lower and the title gets fewer searches, so look for "research associate", "search associate" or "market mapping" in job boards as well as "sourcer". To become a recruitment researcher, follow the same route as the six steps below, with your work sample built around a market map instead of outreach messages.
Can you get a remote sourcer job from Nigeria?
Yes, but only when the ad lets you. Sourcer ads fall into four groups, and you should sort every ad into one of them before you spend time on it.
| Ad says | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Remote, US only (or one country) | Not open to you, however good you are |
| Remote, EMEA or Europe | Sometimes open; check if contractors abroad are accepted |
| Remote, worldwide or anywhere | Open, usually as a contractor |
| Remote, Nigeria or Africa | Open; often a local or pan-African employer |
Here is an example of the first group. Ashby, a recruiting software company, advertised a Talent Sourcer (Sales) role in 2026 as remote but hiring in the United States, at $110,000 to $130,000 a year. That ad was taken down in September 2026 (Ashby Talent Sourcer ad on Built In). "Remote" alone tells you nothing about eligibility. We explain the reasons in why some remote jobs are not open to Nigerians.
What we found when we checked in October 2026
We searched Greenhouse, Lever and Ashby job boards and the big aggregators for sourcer roles open to Nigeria in October 2026. The honest finding is that sourcer-titled roles open to Nigerian residents were scarce. A Remote Rocketship page listing remote talent sourcer jobs showed only roles tied to specific countries, such as Poland and Portugal, with none marked worldwide or open to Africa (Remote Rocketship talent sourcer jobs).
Wider recruitment roles were more open. The same site's Nigeria recruitment page listed recruiter and talent acquisition roles tagged "Nigeria – Remote" from employers including Moniepoint, InEvent and QS Quacquarelli Symonds, but no role with "sourcer" in the title (Remote Rocketship recruitment jobs in Nigeria). Aggregator listings can be out of date, so open the employer's own ad and confirm the location line before applying.
This matters for your search strategy. Search for "sourcer", and also for "talent acquisition associate", "recruitment researcher", "recruiting coordinator" and "recruiter" with sourcing duties. Many people in Nigeria get their first sourcing work under a broader title and then specialise.
Employee or contractor?
Most foreign employers that hire a sourcer in Nigeria do it on a contractor agreement, sometimes through a platform such as Deel or Remote. A few hire through an employer of record (EOR), which gives you employee-style benefits. The difference affects your tax, leave and job security, and we cover it in contractor or employee when a foreign company hires you.
Skills and tools employers ask for
Sourcer ads repeat the same small set of skills. Most of them can be learned free. What you can't easily get is paid access to LinkedIn Recruiter, which employers normally provide once you're hired.
| Skill | How to show it before you're hired |
|---|---|
| Boolean search | Share three search strings and what they found |
| LinkedIn and GitHub searching | A shortlist built from free search |
| Outreach writing | Three sample messages for different personas |
| Understanding the role | A one-page brief rewriting a job ad into search criteria |
| ATS and data hygiene | A clean spreadsheet pipeline with stages and notes |
| Metrics | Response rate and pass-through rate on your own test |
Boolean search
Boolean search means combining keywords with AND, OR and NOT, quotation marks and brackets to narrow results. LinkedIn's own help page confirms that its search bar accepts these operators. They must be written in capitals, quotation marks match exact phrases and brackets group terms. LinkedIn does not support wildcards (LinkedIn Help: Boolean search).
A string for a remote backend engineer might look like this:
- ("backend engineer" OR "software engineer") AND (Python OR Django) AND (payments OR fintech) NOT recruiter
Also learn Google X-ray searching, which uses Google's site: operator to search profiles on another website. It works without a paid LinkedIn seat. In 2026 interviews you'll be asked to explain your logic, so practise saying why each term is there.
Technical sourcing on GitHub
Technical sourcers fill engineering roles and are usually paid better than general sourcers. GitHub's user search accepts qualifiers such as location:, language:, followers: and repos:. For example, "language:go location:lagos" finds users in Lagos whose repositories are mostly in Go (GitHub Docs: searching users). You don't need to code, but you need to read a profile and tell a hobby repository from serious work. Our technical recruiter guide covers that path.
Outreach writing
Your reply rate depends heavily on your messages. A good first message is short, mentions something specific about the person, names the company and the role clearly, and asks a small question. Avoid long templates that read like spam. Hiring managers abroad will judge your English writing here before anything else.
What remote talent sourcers earn
No reliable public dataset gives pay for sourcers who are based in Nigeria and work for foreign companies. The figures below are benchmarks from other markets. Treat them as an upper reference, not an offer you should expect.
| Figure | Source and what it covers |
|---|---|
| $75,940 a year | US median for HR specialists, which includes recruiters, May 2025 (BLS) |
| $76,930 a year | Average posted pay, junior remote sourcer ads, Remote Rocketship |
| $96,458 a year | Average posted pay, mid-level remote sourcer ads, Remote Rocketship |
| $110,000 to $130,000 | Ashby US-only Talent Sourcer (Sales) ad, 2026 |
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics counts recruiters as human resources specialists and puts the group's median pay at $75,940 a year as of May 2025 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook). The Remote Rocketship averages come from salary ranges in job ads collected by its tool, so they are posted pay, not verified earnings, and most of those ads are for US or European residents.
Pay for Nigeria-based sourcers is usually well below these figures. Employers that hire from Nigeria tend to pay contractor rates linked to the region, and agency or RPO roles may pay per hire or per shortlist. What pushes your rate up is clear: technical or executive sourcing, experience sourcing in US or European markets, a strong record of reply and hire numbers, and working the client's hours.
Example (hypothetical): you accept a contract at $1,200 a month. At ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), that is about ₦1,634,400 a month before platform fees, conversion costs and tax. Ask whether the rate is a fixed monthly fee, hourly, or tied to how many candidates you deliver, because those carry very different risks. For more on salary per role see our recruiter salary guide.
A six-step route into a remote sourcing job
1. Pick a lane
Choose one area to start: tech (engineers, data), go-to-market (sales, marketing) or general business roles. A focus lets your work sample, LinkedIn headline and CV all tell the same story. Tech sourcing pays more but has a steeper learning curve.
2. Learn the core searching skills
Spend two to three weeks on Boolean strings, Google X-ray searching, GitHub user search and LinkedIn's free search filters. Practise on real job ads: take a live ad and try to find 30 people who fit it. Keep a log of the strings that worked.
3. Build a sourcing work sample
This is the most persuasive thing you can send. The next section shows what goes in it.
4. Fix your CV and LinkedIn for sourcing
Rewrite past work in sourcing terms. A Nigerian agency recruiter who "screened CVs for banks" should state how many roles they sourced for, what channels they used and what share of their shortlists reached interview. An admin worker who did research should describe it as research. Use the job titles that appear in the ads you're targeting. Our guide on writing a CV for remote HR jobs goes further.
5. Apply to the right mix of employers
Spread your applications across:
- Startups that hire globally and post "worldwide" on Greenhouse, Lever or Ashby boards
- RPO and staffing firms that recruit for foreign clients and often hire sourcers in Africa
- Nigerian and pan-African companies hiring remote talent acquisition staff
- Freelance sourcing work on platforms, for a first track record
Check the location line on every ad, and read how to verify whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents if the wording is unclear.
6. Prepare for the sourcing exercise
Most sourcer hiring processes include a practical task, covered further below. Prepare for it before your first interview, not after.
How to build a sourcing work sample
A work sample replaces the experience you may not yet have. Keep it to a short PDF or a shared document with a spreadsheet attached.
Example (hypothetical): you pick a real public job ad for a remote "Customer Success Manager, EMEA" at a software company. Your sample contains:
- A one-page intake brief: must-have skills, nice-to-haves, target companies to search, and titles that mean the same thing (account manager, client success lead)
- Three Boolean or X-ray strings, each with one line on why you wrote it that way
- A spreadsheet of 20 profiles, with name initials only, current title, company, why they fit, and a fit score from 1 to 3
- Three outreach messages, one each for a strong fit, someone senior and someone in a different industry
- A short note on what you would track: reply rate, interested rate, interview rate
Use initials or anonymised profiles in anything you share publicly. You are handling other people's personal data, and treating it carefully shows the judgement employers want.
Sample outreach message (hypothetical):
"Hi Amaka, I saw you grew the onboarding team at a payments startup from three to ten people. We're hiring a Customer Success Manager for EMEA at a software company that works fully remote. Would you be open to a 15-minute chat next week to hear more? If now isn't the time, no problem at all."
The sourcer interview and sourcing exercise
Expect two or three stages: a screen with a recruiter, a call with the talent lead or hiring manager, and a practical exercise. The exercise is usually one of these:
- Find 10 to 20 candidates for a sample role within a time limit and explain your choices
- Write search strings live while sharing your screen
- Write outreach messages for given profiles
- Critique a weak job ad and turn it into a sourcing plan
Talk through your reasoning as you work. Interviewers want to see how you think: why you excluded a title, why you added a competitor, what you'd do if replies were low. Questions about metrics are common too, such as "what reply rate would worry you?" Our recruiter interview questions cover the overlapping ground.
Nigeria-specific things to plan for
Working hours and outreach timing
Sourcers often need to message candidates during their working day and to attend calls with the hiring manager. As of late October 2026, London is on GMT, one hour behind Lagos. From 1 November 2026, US Eastern Time is six hours behind Lagos, so a 10am New York intake call is 4pm in Lagos. Searching and writing can be done at any hour, so many sourcers work in a block that overlaps with the client's morning.
Power and internet
A dropped call in a sourcing exercise costs you. Keep an inverter or solar backup for your laptop and router, and have two internet options, such as a MiFi plus a phone hotspot, or two providers.
Candidate data and privacy
Sourcing means handling names, profiles and contact details of strangers. European candidates are covered by GDPR, and the Remofirst ad above listed GDPR compliance as part of the job. In Nigeria, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission enforces the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 (NDPC). Practically: don't export candidate data into personal files, don't share profiles in WhatsApp groups, and follow the employer's rules on storing and deleting data.
Getting paid
Contract sourcers are usually paid in dollars through Deel, Remote, Payoneer or a direct bank transfer. Compare fees and exchange rates before you choose. Our guide on receiving dollar payments in Nigeria compares the options, and tax for remote workers in Nigeria explains what you owe.
Mistakes and scams to watch for
- Applying to US-only ads anyway. It wastes your time and can get your profile ignored on the same employer's later ads.
- Calling yourself a recruiter with no evidence. Numbers convince employers: roles sourced, shortlists delivered, reply rates.
- Mass-copied outreach. If your sample messages look like spam, your application fails at the work sample stage.
- Commission-only "sourcing partner" offers. Some agencies pay only when a candidate you found is hired, which can take months. Know what you're agreeing to before you accept.
- Paid "recruiter certification" required to start. A real employer does not charge you to get the job or to receive training. Read how to spot remote job scams in Nigeria before sharing your ID or bank details.
Frequently asked questions
Can I become a talent sourcer with no experience?
Yes, but it's harder than starting as a coordinator or researcher. With no recruitment history, a strong work sample and related experience (research, admin, sales or customer-facing work) give you the best chance. Many people start in a junior agency or RPO role, or as a recruitment coordinator, and move into sourcing within a year.
Do I need a degree to get a remote sourcer job?
Usually not. The BLS lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry level for US HR specialists, but sourcer ads focus on search skill, outreach and results. A degree in HR, psychology or business helps for local roles, while international employers care more about your work sample.
What's the difference between a talent sourcer and a recruiter?
A sourcer finds and engages candidates. A recruiter runs the interview process and closes the hire. In small companies one person may do both, but sourcer roles focus on the top of the funnel, and many recruiters started as sourcers.
What does a recruitment researcher or candidate researcher do?
A recruitment researcher, also called a candidate researcher, maps markets and builds lists of potential candidates for a recruiter or headhunter. They may never message candidates directly. Executive search firms and agencies use these titles most, and the work is a good entry point if you're strong at research but less confident on calls.
Do I need to pay for LinkedIn Recruiter to learn sourcing?
No. Employers usually provide LinkedIn Recruiter once you're hired. You can learn with LinkedIn's free search, Boolean operators, Google X-ray searching and GitHub's user search, all of which work without a paid account.
How much does a remote talent sourcer earn from Nigeria?
There is no reliable published figure for Nigeria-based sourcers. US benchmarks are around $76,000 a year at junior level, based on posted pay in job ads collected by Remote Rocketship, but contractors hired from Nigeria are typically paid much less. Technical and executive sourcing, proven results and working the client's hours raise your rate.
Are remote sourcer jobs open to Nigerians common?
Not very, as of October 2026. When we checked, most remote sourcer ads were limited to the US or to specific European countries. Roles open to Nigeria more often appeared under titles such as recruiter, talent acquisition associate or research associate, so search those titles too.
Key takeaways
- A talent sourcer finds and engages potential candidates. Recruitment researchers and candidate researchers do the research-heavy version of the same work.
- Many "remote" sourcer ads are restricted to one country, so check the location line before applying.
- As of October 2026, roles open to Nigeria showed up more under recruiter and talent acquisition titles than under "sourcer".
- Boolean search, Google X-ray searching, GitHub search and outreach writing can all be learned free.
- A sourcing work sample is the best substitute for experience and prepares you for the practical exercise in interviews.
- US pay figures are benchmarks only. Expect contractor rates and plan for hours, backup power and data privacy.
