You can become a remote technical recruiter from Nigeria by learning enough about software and IT roles to assess engineers, getting good at sourcing and an applicant tracking system, and usually doing a year or more of recruiting before you go fully remote. Most remote technical recruiter ads, including ones open to Lagos, ask for several years of full-cycle hiring experience, so the realistic first step is often a sourcer, coordinator or agency role.
This guide explains what technical recruiters (also called IT recruiters) do and which skills employers test. It sets out the routes in from HR, from agency recruitment and from tech jobs, and gives a 90-day plan you can follow. It also covers how to tell whether a "remote" recruiter job actually accepts applicants living in Nigeria, what the pay benchmarks mean for you, and the time-zone, power and payment arrangements you'll need once you're hired.
Quick answer
A remote technical recruiter finds, screens and hires engineers, data and IT people for a company, working from home. To get there from Nigeria, learn the basics of the roles you'll hire for, practise Boolean sourcing on LinkedIn and GitHub, learn one ATS such as Greenhouse or Lever, and get recruiting experience first. Before applying, check the location field on each ad, because many remote recruiter jobs only accept people living in one country.
What a remote technical recruiter actually does
A technical recruiter fills roles that need specialist technical knowledge: software engineers, DevOps and cloud engineers, data scientists, QA testers, security analysts, product designers. You won't write code. Your job is to understand a hiring manager's needs well enough to find people who can meet them, and to tell a strong candidate from someone who simply copied the right keywords into their profile.
A typical week involves:
- An intake meeting with an engineering manager to agree what the role needs (must-have skills, seniority, budget, time zone).
- Sourcing: searching LinkedIn, GitHub, Stack Overflow and referrals for people who aren't applying anywhere.
- Writing outreach messages that a busy engineer will actually answer.
- Screening calls to check experience, motivation, salary expectations and location.
- Scheduling technical interviews and take-home tests, then chasing feedback.
- Managing offers, negotiating and closing.
- Keeping the ATS (applicant tracking system, the software that holds every candidate and stage) clean, because hiring reports come from it.
When you work remotely, all of this happens over Zoom, Google Meet, Slack and email. That makes your written communication and organisation more visible than in an office.
IT recruiter vs technical recruiter: is there a difference?
In practice, no. "IT recruiter" is the older term and is common at staffing agencies that place contractors in IT departments: network engineers, help desk staff, SAP consultants, system administrators. "Technical recruiter" is the term most product and software companies use, and it leans towards software engineering, data and product roles. Job boards use the two titles interchangeably, so search for both, plus "tech recruiter" and "talent acquisition specialist (tech)".
The four main types of technical recruiting work
| Type | Who pays you | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| In-house (corporate) | The hiring company | Salaried employee or contractor, hires for one company |
| Agency | A recruitment firm | Often a base salary plus commission per placement |
| RPO (recruitment process outsourcing) | A firm embedded in a client | You work inside a client's team on a contract |
| Sourcer | Either of the above | Finds and engages candidates, hands over to a recruiter |
Sourcer roles are the most common entry point into technical recruiting. We cover them in detail in how to get a remote talent sourcer job.
Can you do this job remotely from Nigeria?
Yes, when the employer accepts recruiters living in Nigeria. Many don't, so the location line on each ad is the first thing to read. Remote recruiter jobs generally fall into four groups:
- Remote within one country. "Remote, US" or "Remote, UK" usually means you must already live there and have the right to work there. A Nigerian resident can't apply.
- Remote within a region. "Remote, EMEA" (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) sometimes includes Nigeria and sometimes means "any country where we have an entity". Check the application form or ask.
- Remote with named countries. The ad lists the countries, and Nigeria is either on the list or it isn't.
- Worldwide contractor or freelance work. You invoice the company or a platform and handle your own tax.
Two live examples, as of October 2026, show the difference:
- Moniepoint's Greenhouse careers board lists a Talent Acquisition Specialist role with the location "Remote, Lagos, Nigeria". The same title also appears for Nairobi, Poland and Bangalore on Moniepoint's careers board. Moniepoint has large operations in Nigeria, so this is a Nigeria-based remote job rather than a foreign company hiring abroad.
- Sustainable Talent's Greenhouse board, a US staffing firm, listed a Senior Recruiter as "Florida, US (Remote)" and a Technical Sourcer in Dublin, Ireland. Both say remote or recruiting, and neither is open to someone in Lagos.
The lesson is the same for every ad: "remote" describes where the work happens, not who may apply. For more on reading these labels, see what EMEA means in a remote job description and how to verify whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents. Listings change often, so open the live ad before you apply.
Why Nigeria-based recruiters can be attractive to employers
Lagos is one hour ahead of London in winter (GMT) and on the same time in summer (BST). It's on the same time as Central Europe in winter. That overlap suits European and African hiring. Companies that hire engineers in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana or South Africa also value a recruiter who knows local universities, tech communities and salary expectations. Moniepoint's Early Careers Talent Acquisition Specialist ad, for example, asks for a solid understanding of Nigerian higher education (Moniepoint, as of October 2026). Local knowledge is a real selling point, so use it.
Skills that remote IT recruiter jobs ask for
Employers look for three groups of skills: enough technical understanding to assess candidates, sourcing and tools, and the communication habits that make remote work possible.
Technical literacy (without being an engineer)
You need to know what each role does, which tools signal real experience, and what a reasonable screening question sounds like. Here's the minimum for the roles you'll hire for most often:
| Role | What you should understand | Good screening question |
|---|---|---|
| Frontend developer | React, TypeScript, browser performance | "What did you build, and what was hard about it?" |
| Backend developer | APIs, databases, Python/Go/Java/Node.js | "How did your service handle traffic growth?" |
| DevOps / cloud engineer | AWS, Azure or GCP, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD | "What did you automate, and what did it save?" |
| Data analyst / scientist | SQL, Python, dashboards, statistics | "Which business decision did your analysis change?" |
| QA engineer | Manual vs automated testing, Selenium, Cypress | "What did your tests catch before release?" |
Learn the difference between seniority levels too. A senior engineer is usually expected to make design decisions and mentor others, not just write more code. Read job descriptions from engineering teams, read the WorkRemote role guides for software engineers and DevOps engineers, and ask developer friends to explain their last project to you.
Sourcing and Boolean search
Sourcing means finding people who aren't applying anywhere. The basic tool is Boolean search, which combines keywords with operators. LinkedIn's help page on using Boolean search explains the rules. AND, OR and NOT must be typed in capitals. Quotation marks search for an exact phrase. Parentheses group terms, and LinkedIn doesn't recognise any other grouping symbols. The order of precedence is quotes, then parentheses, then NOT, then AND, then OR.
Example (hypothetical): you need a backend engineer with Go experience in Nigeria. A first search might be:
("backend engineer" OR "backend developer" OR "software engineer") AND (Golang OR "Go developer") AND (Lagos OR Nigeria) NOT recruiter
Then refine the search by company, years of experience or open-to-work signals. The same logic works in Google "X-ray" searches of GitHub or Stack Overflow profiles. For more advanced technique, see how to source candidates for international remote roles.
ATS and recruiting tools
Remote tech companies commonly run their hiring on Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby or Workday, with LinkedIn Recruiter for sourcing and tools like Calendly or GoodTime for scheduling. You don't need all of them. Get comfortable with the ideas they share (pipelines, stages, scorecards, rejection reasons, reports), and the specific tool is quick to learn. Our planned guide to applicant tracking systems for remote recruiters compares the main ones.
Remote working habits
- Clear written updates. Hiring managers in another country will read your Slack summary instead of walking over to your desk.
- Pipeline discipline: every candidate in the ATS, every stage up to date.
- Candidate experience. A candidate who hears nothing for two weeks tells other engineers.
- Data handling. You'll hold CVs, salary details and ID documents. Moniepoint's application form, for example, asks applicants for consent to data processing under the NDPA (Nigeria Data Protection Act). Know the basic rules wherever you hire.
Routes into technical recruiting (from where you are now)
There are four common starting points. Find the one that fits you and focus on filling its gaps.
From HR or general recruitment
This is the shortest route. You already run screening calls and handle offers. What's missing is technical vocabulary and sourcing for passive candidates. Volunteer to take on your company's tech hires, or move to an agency or firm that hires developers. Then describe those hires with numbers on your CV.
From agency recruitment in Nigeria
Agency work teaches speed, sales and closing, and many in-house teams want it. Moniepoint's Talent Acquisition Specialist ad asks for "experience as both an agency recruiter and an in-house recruiter", and for experience hiring both technical (engineering) and non-technical roles (as of October 2026). If your agency places engineers or IT contractors, push for those roles.
From a tech job (developer, QA, IT support, tech community)
People who have worked as developers, testers or support engineers can assess candidates very well, because they've done the work. What you're missing is recruiting process: intake, pipeline management, offers. Ask your current employer's talent team whether you can help with interviews or referrals. Running meet-ups or bootcamp cohorts also counts, because you're building the network recruiters pay for.
From zero
If you have no recruiting or tech background, start with a recruitment coordinator or sourcer role, on-site or hybrid if necessary. Even Moniepoint's Lagos remote recruiter ads ask for at least five years (Talent Acquisition Specialist) or five to seven years (Early Careers) of experience, as of October 2026. Entry-level jobs that are fully remote and technical are rare. Our guide to remote recruitment coordinator jobs for beginners covers the junior route, and remote jobs with no experience lists other beginner options.
A 90-day plan to become a remote technical recruiter
This plan assumes you either work in HR or recruitment now or can get a junior recruiting role during the 90 days.
- Weeks 1 to 2: choose a niche. Pick one area, such as backend engineering, data or cloud/DevOps. Read 30 real job ads for it and list the tools and seniority signals that keep coming up.
- Weeks 2 to 4: learn the vocabulary. For each tool on your list, write one sentence on what it does and which roles use it. Ask two engineers to check your notes.
- Weeks 3 to 6: practise sourcing. Build five Boolean searches for your niche on LinkedIn, then repeat them as Google X-ray searches of GitHub. Save the strongest 20 profiles in a spreadsheet, as if you were filling a real role.
- Weeks 4 to 8: learn an ATS. Some ATS vendors offer free trials or demo environments. If yours does, set up a pipeline with stages and a scorecard. If it doesn't, rebuild the same structure in Notion or a spreadsheet so you understand the logic.
- Weeks 6 to 10: build proof. Write a two-page "sourcing case study": the role, your searches, your outreach message, your shortlist (anonymised) and what you'd ask in a screening call. This is your portfolio piece.
- Weeks 8 to 12: get real hires on record. Ask to take on tech roles at work, help a start-up with one hire, or join an agency. One documented technical hire is worth more than any certificate.
- Weeks 10 to 12: apply. Rewrite your CV around results such as roles filled, time to hire and offer acceptance, then apply to sourcer, coordinator and recruiter roles that accept Nigeria. See how to write a CV for remote HR jobs and practise with our recruiter interview questions.
Expect a take-home task. Moniepoint's process for its Talent Acquisition Specialist role is a recruiter call, a technical interview with the talent team, a take-home assignment, then an interview with an executive (as of October 2026). Your sourcing case study from step 5 is good practice for that kind of task.
A short outreach message that engineers answer
Example (hypothetical):
"Hi Tolu, I saw your work on the payments API at your last company. I'm hiring a senior Go engineer for a fintech team that works remotely on UK hours. The role pays in dollars, and the first interview is a 30-minute conversation with the engineering lead, not a quiz. Open to a quick chat this week?"
It works because it's specific about their work, names the stack, states the hours and pay currency, and describes the next step.
How much do remote technical recruiters earn?
There's no reliable public dataset for Nigeria-based remote technical recruiters, so treat the figures below as benchmarks, not offers.
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics groups recruiters under human resources specialists. It puts the median annual wage for that group at $75,940 in May 2025, and says the usual entry requirement is a bachelor's degree in HR, business, communications or a related field (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook). At WorkRemote's house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), that's about ₦103 million a year. But it's a US median for people living and working in the US, including in-office staff. A Nigeria-based remote recruiter will usually be offered less than US local pay.
What actually moves your pay:
- Who employs you. A local company hiring remotely in Lagos usually pays in naira. A foreign company hiring you as a contractor may pay in dollars.
- Seniority and specialism. Senior engineering, security and machine learning hiring pays more than high-volume support hiring.
- Agency vs in-house. Agency roles often mix a base salary with commission per placement, so income varies more. Read remote recruiting jobs with commission before accepting a commission-heavy offer.
- Time-zone demands. US-hours roles sometimes pay more but take your evenings.
For dollar-paying recruiter roles specifically, see remote recruiter jobs that pay in dollars, and check our recruiter salary guide for the figures we track.
Working as a remote technical recruiter from Nigeria
Time zones
Recruiting depends on meetings: intakes, screens, debriefs. Plan around them.
| Team location | Their 9am is this time in Lagos |
|---|---|
| London (winter, GMT) | 10am |
| Central Europe (winter, CET) | 9am |
| US Eastern (winter, EST from 1 November 2026) | 3pm |
| US Pacific (winter) | 6pm |
| Dubai | 6am |
US-based hiring managers often want afternoon screens, which run into your late evening. Agree your core hours before you sign. Our guide on answering questions about working across time zones helps for interviews.
Power, internet and equipment
A candidate call that drops halfway through looks bad on you and on the company. Have an inverter, solar or generator backup, and two internet options (for example a fixed line plus a MiFi, or two mobile networks with a phone hotspot). Use a headset with a decent microphone, and keep a quiet spot for calls.
Contract type, payment and tax
Foreign companies usually hire Nigeria-based recruiters as independent contractors or through an employer of record (EOR), a firm that employs you on the company's behalf. Our explainer on contractor vs employee status in Nigeria covers the differences. For getting paid in dollars, see how to receive dollar payments in Nigeria. Tax rules for remote income are in our guide to remote work tax in Nigeria.
Where to find remote IT recruiter jobs and opportunities
- ATS job boards. Many tech companies post directly on Greenhouse, Lever or Ashby boards. Search those boards for "technical recruiter", "tech recruiter" or "talent acquisition" plus "Nigeria", "Africa" or "EMEA", then open each ad and read the location line.
- Companies that hire engineers in Africa. Firms with engineering teams in Nigeria need recruiters who know the market. Check their careers pages.
- Recruitment agencies and RPO firms. These are often the fastest way in, especially for contract work.
- Your network. Engineers you've placed or met are your best source of referrals and introductions to hiring managers.
- WorkRemote.ng. Our HR and admin listings show the company, its website and where applicants may live for each remote role. WorkRemote reviews listings and aims to publish genuine remote roles open to applicants from Nigeria, but it can't check every detail, and employers decide who they hire.
If a "recruiter" opportunity asks you to pay for training, a starter kit or "placement access", walk away. Read how to spot remote job scams in Nigeria before you apply anywhere.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Applying to "Remote, US" ads. You'll be filtered out on location before anyone reads your CV.
- Pretending to be technical. Engineers notice quickly. Saying "I'll check that with the hiring manager" is better than guessing.
- Keyword matching. A profile that lists Kubernetes isn't proof of Kubernetes experience. Ask what they built.
- A CV full of duties instead of results. "Hired 14 backend engineers in six months, average 32 days to offer" beats "responsible for recruitment".
- Ignoring candidate data rules. Don't share CVs or ID documents on personal WhatsApp.
- Taking commission-only work without checking it. Find out how many placements recent hires made in their first three months before you rely on that income.
Frequently asked questions
Can I become a technical recruiter without a tech background?
Yes. Most technical recruiters aren't engineers. You do need to learn the vocabulary, the tools and the seniority signals for the roles you hire for, and most people get there by working on tech roles alongside an experienced recruiter.
Are there entry-level remote technical recruiter jobs?
They exist, but they're rare. Most remote technical recruiter ads ask for several years of full-cycle recruiting, so beginners usually start as a sourcer or recruitment coordinator, often in an office or hybrid role, before moving to fully remote work.
Do I need a degree or certificate?
Not always. The BLS lists a bachelor's degree as typical entry education for HR specialists in the US, and some Nigerian ads ask for HR or technical education. Documented hires and sourcing skill usually count for more than a certificate, though. For HR qualifications, see HR certifications for remote jobs.
What is the difference between a technical recruiter and a technical sourcer?
A sourcer finds and engages candidates. A recruiter manages the whole process, from intake to offer. Sourcing is a common first job and a good way to build the skill technical recruiting depends on most.
Can Nigerians work as remote IT recruiters for US companies?
Yes, when the company hires contractors or uses an employer of record in Nigeria. Many US recruiter roles require US residence, though, so check the location line and the application form for country questions before you apply.
What hours will I work as a remote technical recruiter in Nigeria?
That depends on where the hiring managers are. European teams roughly match Lagos working hours. US Eastern teams start at 3pm Lagos time in winter, so expect some evening calls. Agree core hours before you accept an offer.
How do I prove I can do technical recruiting before I'm hired?
Write a sourcing case study: a real job ad, your Boolean searches, an outreach message, an anonymised shortlist and your screening questions. Pair it with any real technical hires you've supported, and describe them with numbers.
Key takeaways
- Technical recruiters and IT recruiters do the same job: hiring engineers, data and IT people. Search for both titles.
- The skills employers check are technical literacy, Boolean sourcing, an ATS, and clear written communication.
- Remote recruiter ads, even ones open to Lagos, usually ask for years of experience, so sourcer, coordinator and agency roles are the realistic way in.
- "Remote" doesn't mean open to Nigeria. Read the location line on every ad.
- US pay figures (a BLS median of $75,940 in May 2025 for HR specialists) are benchmarks, not what a Nigeria-based recruiter will be offered.
- Plan for the time zone, power and internet backup, and payment setup before you accept an offer.
