Best Applicant Tracking Systems for Remote Recruiters

Which ATS should remote recruiters in Nigeria learn or buy? Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Workable, Manatal and Zoho Recruit compared, with naira prices.

Updated 13 min read

If you want remote recruiting work with foreign companies, learn Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby or Workable first, because those are the systems in-house teams use. If you recruit for your own clients from Nigeria, a low-cost agency tool such as Manatal, Zoho Recruit or Recruit CRM makes more sense than an enterprise ATS you can't afford.

Most "best ATS" lists online are written for companies buying software, and many are published by the vendors themselves. This guide is written for the recruiter. It separates the systems you'll be expected to use on the job from the ones you might pay for yourself, shows the published prices in dollars and naira, and explains how to get real practice when no employer has given you a login yet. It also covers how to present ATS skills on your CV and the Nigerian realities of doing this work across time zones.

Quick answer

An applicant tracking system (ATS) is software that stores candidates, moves them through hiring stages and records feedback. Remote recruiters in Nigeria should aim for working knowledge of one employer-side system, usually Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby or Workable. Freelancers with their own clients can start on Zoho Recruit's free plan or Manatal from $15 per user a month (billed yearly, as of October 2026).

What an ATS actually does in a remote recruiter's day

On a distributed team, the ATS is where the work lives. Your hiring manager might be in London or Austin, and the only way they see what you've done is through the ATS. So knowing the system well counts as part of the job itself.

In a typical remote recruiting week, you'd use the ATS to:

  • publish a role to the careers page and job boards
  • screen applications, often against knockout questions
  • move candidates between stages (applied, screen, interview, offer)
  • schedule interviews across time zones and send calendar invites
  • collect interviewer scorecards so decisions don't happen in private chats
  • email candidates from templates, including rejections
  • pull reports on time to hire, pipeline numbers and source of hire

Many recruiting systems also include a CRM (candidate relationship management) layer, which holds passive candidates you've sourced but who haven't applied yet. Lever sells its ATS and CRM as one product, and Recruit CRM, as the name suggests, is built around it.

ATS versus HRIS

An ATS covers hiring up to the signed offer. An HRIS (human resources information system) covers the employee after they join: records, leave, payroll preparation. Some vendors bundle the two. Workable, for example, packages recruiting and HR together on its pricing page. If a job ad asks for "ATS and HRIS experience", it wants both halves.

How we chose the systems in this guide

We didn't test these products, and we have no relationship with any vendor. We picked them using three checks:

  1. Relevance to remote recruiting jobs. The system shows up in remote recruiter job descriptions or is widely used by the tech and startup companies that hire remotely.
  2. Transparency. We opened each vendor's own pricing page in October 2026 and report only what it says. Where a vendor doesn't publish prices, we say so.
  3. Fit for a Nigeria-based recruiter. We asked whether you could realistically learn it, try it or pay for it from here.

Prices change often and some vary with company size, so treat every figure below as "as of October 2026" and check the vendor's page before you commit.

Employer-side ATS platforms: what remote companies expect you to know

These are the systems you're most likely to meet inside a foreign company's talent team. You won't usually pay for them yourself. The employer gives you a seat.

ATSTypically used byPublished price (Oct 2026)
GreenhouseLarger and fast-growing companiesNot published, custom quote
LeverMid-size tech and SaaS teamsNot published, custom quote
AshbyStartups and scale-upsFrom $400 a month (up to 100 employees)
WorkableSmall and mid-size companiesFrom $299 a month (Standard plan)

Greenhouse

Greenhouse is built around structured hiring: interview kits, scorecards and defined stages for every role. Its pricing page lists three plans (Core, Plus and Pro) but no prices. It says pricing is customised to each company's hiring needs. Core already includes sourcing and CRM, scheduling, an AI notetaker, and reporting and analytics.

If you've worked with Greenhouse, say so on your CV. As of October 2026, a Nigeria-filtered remote recruiter page on DailyRemote showed a contract Senior Talent Acquisition Operations Specialist role, marked worldwide, that named Greenhouse in its requirements. Most other ads on that page only said "an ATS".

Greenhouse also runs a training site, Learn Greenhouse. It offers a 30-minute course on structured hiring workflows, a "Learn from a recruiter" series by Greenhouse's own talent team, and digital badges. The page doesn't say whether people who aren't Greenhouse customers can sign up, so treat access as uncertain.

Lever

Lever positions itself as ATS and CRM in one. Its pricing page publishes no prices. It describes a core platform (ATS, CRM, reporting dashboards, AI screening, interview transcripts and summaries) plus paid add-ons, and says pricing scales with team size and hiring needs. The CRM side matters for a sourcing-heavy remote role. If you'll be building pipelines of passive engineers, Lever's nurture features are what you'd use every day.

Ashby

Ashby combines ATS, CRM, scheduling and analytics. It's one of the few modern systems with a public starting price. Its pricing page lists the All-In-One Foundations plan at $400 a month for companies of up to 100 employees, with 10% off on annual terms. That's about ₦544,800 a month at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM rate, 23 October 2026). Larger plans are quote-only.

One detail matters for Nigerian founders: Ashby says emerging-market pricing is available on Foundations. If you're the first recruiter at a Lagos startup and someone asks you to pick a system, ask Ashby for that rate.

Workable

Workable bundles recruiting and HR tools. Its pricing page showed the Standard plan at $299 a month ($3,588 a year billed annually), Premier at $599 a month and Enterprise at $719 a month. It offers a 15-day free trial with no card required. Prices are tiered by company size, so a bigger company pays more. At the house rate, $299 is roughly ₦407,200 a month.

The 15-day trial is useful for practice. More on that below.

Agency and freelance tools: an ATS you can pay for yourself

Many Nigerian recruiters work as freelancers or run small agencies, finding candidates for foreign clients. You need your own system for that work, and enterprise pricing makes no sense. These three publish their pricing or offer a free tier.

ATSStarting price (Oct 2026)Roughly in nairaTrial or free tier
Zoho RecruitFree plan₦0Free plan, 1 active job per recruiter
Manatal$15 per user a month (yearly)₦20,40014 days, no card
Recruit CRM$95 per user a month₦129,40030 days

Naira figures use ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026) and are rounded. Your bank's card rate will usually differ.

Zoho Recruit

Zoho Recruit's pricing page lists a free plan that covers candidate management, email management and interview scheduling, capped at one active job per recruiter licence. Paid plans (Standard and Enterprise) add sourcing, a branded careers site, assessments and more active jobs, but the page didn't display USD prices when we checked. If you're starting with one client and one role, the free plan lets you run a real pipeline at no cost.

Manatal

Manatal is the most affordable paid option here. Professional costs $15 per user a month billed annually, or $19 billed monthly, with up to 15 jobs and 10,000 candidates. It includes applicant tracking, a recruitment CRM and career pages. Workflow automations start on the $35 Enterprise plan. The 14-day trial needs no card but leaves out job board posting and mass emailing.

Recruit CRM

Recruit CRM is built for recruitment agencies and executive search firms, not in-house teams. Pro costs $95 per user a month and includes a Chrome sourcing extension and two-way email and calendar sync. There's a 30-day free trial. It's a serious expense in naira, so it makes sense once you have steady agency revenue, not before.

Which ATS should you learn first?

Pick based on the work you're chasing, not on which tool has the nicest website.

Your goalLearn firstWhy
In-house remote role at a tech companyGreenhouse or AshbyCommon at the companies that hire remote recruiters
Sourcing-heavy or technical recruitingLever or AshbyBoth combine ATS with CRM for passive candidates
Recruiting coordinator roleAny one, plus schedulingCoordinators live in scheduling and stage moves
Freelance recruiter, first clientsZoho Recruit (free)No cost while you prove the model
Small agency, several clientsManatal or Recruit CRMAgency workflows and per-user pricing

The good news is that these systems share the same logic: jobs, stages, candidates, scorecards, reports. A recruiter who can explain how they built and ran a pipeline in one system will pick up another in days. Hiring managers know this, so "I used Workable and learned Greenhouse in my first week at X" is a believable story.

For the wider route into the profession, see our guide to becoming a remote recruiter from Nigeria. If you're aiming at engineering hiring specifically, the technical recruiter route covers it in detail.

How to get hands-on ATS experience without an employer login

This is the question most guides skip. You can't put "Greenhouse" on your CV because you watched a demo. Here's a practical way to build real, describable experience.

  1. Pick one free or trial system. Zoho Recruit's free plan has no time limit. Workable (15 days), Manatal (14 days) and Recruit CRM (30 days) have free trials. Start one only when you have time to use it every day of the trial.
  2. Set up a realistic role. Write a job description for a real role you understand, such as a customer support agent for a UK fintech. Create stages: applied, phone screen, skills test, hiring manager interview, offer.
  3. Build a scorecard. Define three to five criteria (written English, ticket handling, availability for UK hours) and a rating scale.
  4. Run test candidates. Use profiles of friends who agree to help, or invented candidates clearly marked as test data. Never upload real people's CVs without their permission.
  5. Use the communication features. Write templates for invitation, rejection and offer. Schedule a mock interview across time zones.
  6. Pull a report. Export pipeline numbers and write a one-page summary of what you'd change.
  7. Document it. Screenshots (with test data only) and a short write-up become a portfolio piece you can show in interviews.

On top of that, look at the vendor's own training. Greenhouse's learning site is one example, though access for non-customers isn't confirmed. Volunteer recruiting also counts: an NGO, a church programme or a student society running real intakes through a free Zoho Recruit account gives you genuine experience you can describe.

Be wary of anyone selling "ATS access" or "Greenhouse certification" in WhatsApp or Telegram groups. Vendor training is either free or sold by the vendor itself. Our guide to spotting remote job scams covers the warning signs.

How to show ATS skills on your CV and in interviews

Name the system and say what you did with it. "Proficient in ATS" tells a hiring manager nothing.

Example (hypothetical): weak and strong CV bullets for the same experience.

WeakStronger
Familiar with ATS toolsRan 12 roles end to end in Workable, from job post to offer
Used GreenhouseBuilt interview kits and scorecards in Greenhouse for 4 engineering roles
Good with reportingPulled weekly pipeline reports from Zoho Recruit for 2 UK clients

Only claim numbers you can defend in an interview, because recruiters interviewing recruiters will ask follow-up questions.

In interviews, expect questions such as "Walk me through how you'd set up a new role in our ATS" or "How do you keep hiring managers updated when they're six hours behind you?" Answer with a sequence of steps, not adjectives. Our recruiter interview questions guide has more, and how to write a CV for remote HR jobs covers the rest of the document.

Nigerian realities: time zones, power and paying for software

Time zones decide which ATS features matter

Scheduling is where remote recruiters from Nigeria earn trust or lose it. A Nigeria-only Technical Recruiting Associate ad from the staffing firm Talent Hackers (posted 30 June 2026 with a listed closing date of 30 August 2026, so check for current openings) asked candidates to be able to work US Eastern hours. After US clocks change on 1 November 2026, 9am to 5pm in New York is 3pm to 11pm in Lagos. UK clients are easier: from 25 October 2026, London is on GMT and Lagos is one hour ahead.

Learn the scheduling side of whichever ATS you use: candidate self-booking links, interviewer availability, and time zone display. A wrong-hour invite sent to a candidate in Toronto is the kind of mistake people remember.

Power and connectivity

Every system above is browser-based, so a power cut doesn't lose saved data. It does stop you working. Keep an inverter or solar backup and two internet options (two ISPs, or a MiFi plus a phone hotspot). That way, a 4pm candidate screen with a client in Lagos-morning, London-afternoon overlap isn't cancelled by NEPA.

Paying for an ATS from Nigeria

If you're paying for Manatal or Recruit CRM yourself, you'll need a card that works for international subscriptions. Naira debit cards often have tight foreign-spend limits, so many freelancers use a dollar virtual card from the apps covered in our guide to receiving and spending dollars in Nigeria. Annual billing is usually cheaper but locks in a big payment, so try monthly first.

Candidate data is not yours to keep

As a recruiter for foreign clients, you'll handle CVs, phone numbers and sometimes passport details for people in several countries. Keep that data inside the client's ATS, not in personal Google Drive folders or WhatsApp chats. If you run your own ATS for clients, agree in writing who owns the candidate data. Your contract type affects this too, as our contractor versus employee explainer shows.

Common mistakes recruiters make with ATS platforms

  • Listing five systems you've only seen in demos. One system you can explain in depth beats five you can't.
  • Paying for an enterprise tool before you have clients. Start free, upgrade when revenue justifies it.
  • Doing the real work outside the ATS. Feedback in DMs and statuses in spreadsheets leave your manager blind and make your work invisible.
  • Ignoring reporting. Remote managers judge you on pipeline numbers. Learn to pull time-to-hire and stage conversion reports.
  • Uploading real CVs into a practice account. Use test data or consenting volunteers.
  • Assuming "worldwide" means Nigeria. Some recruiter ads restrict location by client or payroll. Read the location line before applying.

Frequently asked questions

Which ATS is best for remote recruiters?

There's no single best one. For in-house remote roles, Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby and Workable are the systems to know. For freelancers and small agencies, Zoho Recruit (free plan), Manatal (from $15 per user a month, billed yearly) and Recruit CRM (from $95 per user a month) are more realistic, as of October 2026.

Can I learn an ATS for free in Nigeria?

Yes. Zoho Recruit has a free plan limited to one active job per recruiter licence, and Workable, Manatal and Recruit CRM offer free trials of 14 to 30 days. Set up a realistic practice pipeline and document what you did.

Do remote recruiter jobs require ATS experience?

Most ask for it in some form. Many ads say "experience with an ATS" without naming a product, while operations-focused roles sometimes name one, such as Greenhouse. Working knowledge of one system plus a clear account of how you used it is usually enough to pass that requirement.

Is Greenhouse certification worth it?

Greenhouse runs a learning site with courses and digital badges, but its page doesn't say whether people outside customer companies can access it. Hiring managers care more about whether you've run real pipelines than about badges. Never pay a third party for "Greenhouse certification".

What is the cheapest ATS for a freelance recruiter?

Zoho Recruit's free plan costs nothing for one active job per recruiter licence. Among paid options checked in October 2026, Manatal's Professional plan was the lowest at $15 per user a month billed yearly, about ₦20,400 at ₦1,362 to $1.

Should I put ATS names on my CV if I only used them in a trial?

Yes, if you describe it honestly. Write something like "Set up and ran a practice hiring pipeline in Workable (trial), including scorecards and reports", and be ready to walk an interviewer through it. Don't present trial use as employment.

What is the difference between an ATS and a recruitment CRM?

An ATS tracks people who have applied for a specific job. A recruitment CRM tracks relationships with potential candidates over time, including people who haven't applied yet. Lever, Ashby and Recruit CRM combine both, which is why sourcing-heavy roles often mention them.

Key takeaways

  • Learn one employer-side system well (Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby or Workable) if you want an in-house remote recruiting role.
  • Greenhouse and Lever don't publish prices; Ashby starts at $400 a month and Workable at $299 a month, as of October 2026.
  • Freelancers can start on Zoho Recruit's free plan and move to Manatal or Recruit CRM when clients justify the cost.
  • Free trials plus a documented practice pipeline give you real experience to describe on your CV.
  • Scheduling across time zones and clean reporting are the ATS skills remote managers notice most.
