How to Write a CV for Remote HR Jobs From Nigeria
Write a CV for remote HR jobs that foreign employers shortlist: HR metrics, ATS and HRIS tools, time zone, CIPM and SHRM listing, with examples for Nigerians.

A CV for remote HR jobs has to prove two things fast. First, that you can do the HR work. Second, that you can do it for people you'll never meet, in another time zone, using the software the employer already runs. Most Nigerian HR CVs only prove the first. They list duties like "handled recruitment" and "managed staff welfare", then stop.
Foreign hiring managers screening for an HR generalist, recruiter or people operations specialist want something different. They look for numbers, named tools (an applicant tracking system, an HR information system), exposure to more than one country's rules, and clean written English. They also want to see quickly whether you can legally and practically work for them from Lagos, Abuja or Enugu.
This guide shows you how to build that CV section by section. It includes before-and-after bullet examples, a header that answers the time-zone question for the recruiter, and the right way to list CIPM, CIPD, SHRM or HRCI credentials. It also covers the mistakes that get Nigerian HR CVs rejected.
Quick answer
To write a CV for remote HR jobs, keep it to two pages with no photo or personal details. Open with a short profile naming your HR speciality and the countries you've supported. Then list your tools (applicant tracking system, HR information system, payroll) and write each job as results with numbers: roles filled, time to hire, employees onboarded, payroll accuracy. Add your time zone and working hours, list credentials such as CIPM or SHRM-CP plainly, and tailor the CV to each job ad.
What remote HR employers look for on a CV
Local HR jobs reward presence. You're in the office, you know everyone and you sort out problems face to face. Remote HR jobs reward different things, and your CV should show them before anything else.
| What they look for | How a CV shows it |
|---|---|
| Written communication | Clear bullets, no errors, policies or handbooks you wrote |
| Tool fluency | Named ATS, HRIS and payroll tools you've used |
| Multi-country exposure | Countries or regions you've hired in or supported |
| Measurable results | Time to hire, retention, onboarding completion |
| Discretion with data | Handling of personal data, confidentiality, data protection |
| Self-direction | Projects you ran end to end without a manager in the room |
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics describes HR specialists as people who recruit, screen, interview and place workers, and who may also handle pay and benefits, training and employee relations. It names communication, decision-making, attention to detail and interpersonal skills as the important qualities. A remote employer wants the same qualities, but proven in writing, because they can't watch you work.
How to structure a remote HR CV
Use a plain, one-column layout. Many remote employers screen applications through an applicant tracking system (ATS), software such as Greenhouse, Lever, Workable or Ashby that stores CVs and lets recruiters search them. Columns, text boxes, icons and skill bars often come out scrambled when an ATS reads them. Save as PDF unless the ad asks for Word.
Two pages is the ceiling for most HR professionals. One page is fine if you have under three years' experience.
Header: name, location and time zone
Your header needs your name, email, phone number with +234, LinkedIn URL and location. For remote roles, add a line that answers the first question every overseas recruiter has:
- Lagos, Nigeria (WAT, UTC+1). Available to work UK hours or overlap with US Eastern mornings.
That line saves the recruiter a search. As of October 2026, Lagos is one hour ahead of London (the UK went back to GMT on 25 October). US Eastern is 5 hours behind Lagos until 1 November 2026 and 6 hours behind after that. Keep the CV line simple and put the detail in your cover note.
Leave out the things Nigerian CVs often include but foreign employers don't want: photo, date of birth, state of origin, local government area, marital status, religion, number of children and NYSC certificate number. Many employers in the UK, US and Europe avoid collecting this information at screening, and an HR CV that includes it suggests you don't know current hiring practice. That's a bad signal from someone applying to run hiring. Never put your NIN or BVN on a CV. For more on protecting your details, see our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria.
Profile: three or four lines
Your profile should say what kind of HR you do, at what level, for what kind of organisation and where. Skip adjectives like "dynamic" and "result-driven" that any candidate could use.
Example (hypothetical): "HR generalist with five years' experience supporting 120 to 300 employees at a Nigerian fintech, including staff in Ghana and Kenya. Ran end-to-end hiring on Workable, moved employee records from spreadsheets to BambooHR, and owned monthly payroll inputs. Looking for a remote people operations role with a distributed team."
That profile names the speciality, the scale, the countries, two tools and a project. A recruiter can match it to their job ad in about five seconds.
Skills and tools
Group your tools so a recruiter can scan them. Only list tools you've actually used, because a skills test or interview can expose a padded list quickly.
| Group | Examples to list if you've used them |
|---|---|
| ATS | Greenhouse, Lever, Workable, Ashby, SmartRecruiters |
| HRIS | BambooHR, HiBob, Workday, Personio, Rippling, SeamlessHR |
| Global payroll and EOR | Deel, Remote, Oyster |
| Sourcing | LinkedIn Recruiter, Boolean search |
| Collaboration | Slack, Google Workspace, Notion, Microsoft Teams |
| Data | Excel or Google Sheets (pivot tables, VLOOKUP), Looker Studio |
An employer of record (EOR) is a company like Deel or Remote that legally employs staff in a country on behalf of a foreign business. Experience onboarding people through an EOR is worth listing, because many companies hire remote staff this way. We explain how it affects you as a worker in contractor vs employee for Nigerians.
Experience
List roles in reverse order: job title, employer, location (or "Remote"), dates in month and year. Under each role, write three to six bullets that describe results. The next two sections show you how.
Certifications and education
Put certifications above education if they're HR-specific and recent. List your degree or HND with the institution and year. Don't include secondary school results.
How to rewrite Nigerian HR experience for foreign employers
This is where most Nigerian HR CVs lose the shortlist. The experience is often strong, but it's written as a list of duties in local shorthand. A recruiter in Amsterdam doesn't know what "staff welfare" covers, and "handled recruitment" says nothing about scale or quality.
Rewrite each duty as: action + scope + tool + result.
| Typical Nigerian CV line | Remote-ready version (hypothetical figures) |
|---|---|
| Handled recruitment | Filled 38 roles across sales, ops and engineering in 12 months; cut average time to hire from 45 to 28 days using Workable |
| Managed staff welfare | Ran quarterly engagement surveys for 210 staff; actions on workload and leave policy lifted participation from 54% to 81% |
| Prepared payroll | Prepared monthly payroll inputs for 150 employees, including PAYE, pension and NHF deductions, with zero late payments in two years |
| Handled onboarding | Built a 30-day onboarding checklist in Notion; new hires completed setup in 3 days instead of 2 weeks |
| Kept staff records | Migrated 180 employee files from spreadsheets to BambooHR and set access permissions by role |
| Liaised with management | Advised four department heads on disciplinary cases, documented every step and closed all cases without legal escalation |
The figures above are examples to show the format, not targets. Use your own numbers. If you don't have exact figures, give honest approximations ("about 40 roles") and be ready to explain how you got them in an interview.
HR metrics worth putting on your CV
Look for numbers you can defend in these areas:
- Hiring volume: roles filled per quarter or year, and in which functions
- Speed: time to hire or time to fill
- Quality: offer acceptance rate, how many hires passed probation, hiring manager satisfaction
- Retention: staff turnover before and after a change you led
- Scale: headcount supported, number of countries or locations
- Accuracy: payroll errors, compliance audit results
- Efficiency: hours saved by a process or tool you introduced
Recruiters especially should lead with volume, speed and the type of roles filled. Technical hiring and senior hiring are worth naming separately because they're harder. If that's your direction, see how to become a remote technical recruiter.
Show your Nigerian legal knowledge as a strength
Experience with PAYE, pension remittances, the National Housing Fund, Industrial Training Fund contributions and Nigerian employment contracts is a real asset. Plenty of foreign companies employ or contract people in Nigeria and need someone who understands local rules. Write it plainly: "Ensured monthly statutory deductions (PAYE, pension, NHF) were correctly calculated and remitted for 150 Nigerian employees."
Then show you can work beyond Nigeria. If you've supported staff in Ghana, Kenya or South Africa, or worked with a foreign parent company's HR team, say so in the profile and the relevant bullets. Multi-country exposure is one of the clearest signals a remote employer looks for.
Tailor the CV to the HR role you're applying for
"Remote HR job" covers several different roles. One CV sent unchanged to all of them won't match any job ad well. Keep a master CV with everything, then cut a version for each type of role.
| Role | What to put first | Tools to name |
|---|---|---|
| HR generalist / people operations | Lifecycle work: onboarding, policies, employee relations, payroll inputs | HRIS, payroll, EOR platforms |
| Recruiter / talent acquisition | Roles filled, time to hire, sourcing channels, stakeholder work | ATS, LinkedIn Recruiter, Boolean search |
| HR coordinator / recruiting coordinator | Scheduling volume, candidate communication, documentation | ATS, Google Calendar, Calendly |
| HR operations / HRIS | Systems set up or migrated, data accuracy, reporting | HRIS, Excel or Sheets, Looker Studio |
Read the job ad twice and mirror its words where they're true for you. If the ad says "people operations", don't call yourself "personnel officer". If it asks for "experience supporting a distributed team", use that phrase in a bullet if you have the experience. For the skills and path behind each role, see our guides to becoming a remote HR generalist, working as a remote recruiter and remote people operations work.
How to list HR certifications and memberships
Certifications help an HR CV, but they don't replace evidence of results. List what you hold, with the full name the first time, because an overseas recruiter may not know Nigerian acronyms.
CIPM (Nigeria)
The Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria has three grades of professional membership: Associate, Full Member and Fellow. Its membership upgrade page says upgrades require time in grade, paid-up dues, a detailed CV and a Human Resource Practitioners' Licence (as of October 2026). On a CV for foreign employers, write it like this:
- Associate Member, Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM), 2022
CIPD recognition for CIPM members
This is useful if you're targeting UK employers. On 17 September 2024, CIPM Nigeria and the UK's Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) signed a mutual recognition agreement. Under it, Associate CIPM members can become Associate CIPD members, Full CIPM members can become CIPD Chartered Members, and CIPM Fellows can become Chartered Fellows. Each route runs through a 60-minute professional discussion on Microsoft Teams. As of October 2026, the assessment costs £120 for Associate and Full members and £250 for Fellows, plus CIPD joining and membership fees. UK hiring managers know the CIPD name well, so it's worth considering if you already hold CIPM.
SHRM and HRCI (US-based bodies)
The US credentials are well known to American employers. They cost real money, so weigh them against your target market before paying.
| Credential | Cost as of October 2026 | Approx. naira at ₦1,362/$1 |
|---|---|---|
| HRCI aPHR or aPHRi | $400 | about ₦545,000 |
| HRCI PHR or PHRi | $495 | about ₦674,000 |
| SHRM-CP (member to non-member) | $350 to $499 | about ₦477,000 to ₦680,000 |
HRCI's exam fee page lists a $100 application fee plus a $300 exam fee for the aPHR and aPHRi, and $100 plus $395 for the PHR and PHRi. HRCI doesn't refund you once your application is approved. SHRM's exam fee page for the Middle East and Africa region lists SHRM-CP fees of $350 to $499, depending on SHRM membership and whether you apply early or by the standard deadline. The same page says the exam must be taken in person at an authorised Prometric test centre, so check where your nearest centre is before you register. Naira figures use the CBN NFEM rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (23 October 2026) and are rounded. Your bank or card provider may charge more.
If you're studying for a credential, you can list it as "in progress" with an expected date: "SHRM-CP (exam scheduled, December 2026)". Don't list a credential you haven't earned. HR is the department that checks other people's credentials. For a fuller comparison of which certification suits which market, see our guide to the best HR certifications for remote jobs.
Make your location and eligibility clear
A remote HR job isn't always open to someone in Nigeria. HR roles are more country-bound than most remote work, because a people partner who handles UK employees usually needs to know UK employment law, and the employer may only hire people with the right to work there.
On a job ad, "Remote" on its own tells you little. ALX Africa's Greenhouse careers board, for example, lists several roles simply as "Remote" next to others tied to Lagos, Accra or Johannesburg (as of October 2026). You have to open each ad to find out who can apply.
Remote HR roles that are more often open to applicants in Nigeria include:
- Recruiting and sourcing for global or Africa-focused teams
- People operations for companies hiring through an EOR across many countries
- HR coordinator and recruiting coordinator roles
- HR roles at African startups with distributed staff
Your CV can help here without overselling. If an ad lists "EMEA" or "Africa", your header line with Lagos and WAT already shows you fit. If it says "UK only" or "US only", a better CV won't change that. Don't write "willing to relocate" on a remote application unless you mean it and the ad invites it. For a step-by-step check, read how to verify whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents.
Show you handle personal data properly
HR people see payslips, medical notes, disciplinary records and ID documents. Remote employers worry about that data far more when it sits on a laptop in another country. A line or two showing you take it seriously stands out on an HR CV.
Nigeria's data protection law is the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, enforced by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission. If you've helped your employer register with the NDPC, prepare for a data protection audit, write a staff privacy notice or control who can see HR records, put it on your CV. If you've worked with European staff data, mention that you followed GDPR (the EU's General Data Protection Regulation). Example (hypothetical): "Set role-based access in BambooHR so only HR and line managers could view salary data; supported the company's NDPA 2023 compliance audit."
Example (hypothetical): a remote HR generalist CV outline
Here's how the pieces fit together for a mid-level candidate. Every name and number is made up to show the format.
- Header: Adaeze Okafor | adaeze.okafor@email.com | +234 800 000 0000 | linkedin.com/in/adaezeokafor | Lagos, Nigeria (WAT, UTC+1), available for UK hours
- Profile: HR generalist, five years, fintech, 120 to 300 staff across Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya; Workable and BambooHR; looking for a people operations role on a distributed team.
- Skills: ATS: Workable, Greenhouse (training). HRIS: BambooHR. Payroll and EOR: Deel. Collaboration: Slack, Notion, Google Workspace. Data: Google Sheets (pivot tables).
- Experience 1: HR Generalist, a Lagos fintech, March 2022 to present. Four bullets: hiring volume and time to hire, HRIS migration, payroll accuracy, onboarding checklist.
- Experience 2: HR Officer, a Lagos logistics company, January 2020 to February 2022. Three bullets: recruitment for drivers and ops staff, attendance records, disciplinary documentation.
- Certifications: Associate Member, CIPM, 2021. SHRM-CP, exam scheduled December 2026.
- Education: BSc Psychology, University of Lagos, 2018.
That fits on two pages with room to spare. Notice what's missing: no "objective" paragraph, no list of soft skills, no hobbies and no "references available on request".
Common mistakes on Nigerian HR CVs
- Listing duties instead of results. "Responsible for recruitment" tells a recruiter nothing. Use numbers and outcomes.
- Personal details at the top. Photo, date of birth and state of origin waste space and send the wrong signal from an HR professional.
- No tools named. If a job ad asks for Greenhouse and BambooHR and your CV doesn't name any software, the ATS keyword search may skip you.
- Three pages or more. Cut early roles to one line each and drop old training courses.
- Unexplained acronyms. Write out CIPM, ITF, NHF and PAYE the first time, or a foreign reader will guess.
- Hiding gaps or freelance work. Short contracts and freelance recruiting count as experience. List them as roles. Our guide to explaining employment gaps in remote applications covers the wording.
- Errors in English. One typo in an HR CV hurts more than in most fields, because HR writes the company's policies and offer letters. Read the CV aloud before you send it.
Final checks before you apply
Run through this list for each application:
- The job ad accepts applicants in Nigeria, Africa, EMEA or worldwide.
- Your profile names the role type in the ad (generalist, recruiter, people ops).
- At least three tools from the ad appear in your skills, but only if you've used them.
- Every experience bullet starts with an action and most include a number.
- Your header shows your location, time zone and working hours.
- You have no photo, date of birth, state of origin, NIN or BVN on the CV.
- The file is a one-column PDF named "Firstname-Lastname-HR-CV.pdf".
- Someone else has proofread it, or you've read it aloud.
UK and US employers have slightly different CV conventions (UK employers expect "CV", US employers say "resume" and prefer tighter one-page documents for junior roles). Our guides on adapting your CV for UK remote jobs and writing a CV for international remote jobs cover those differences across all job types.
Frequently asked questions
Should I include a photo on my HR CV for foreign employers?
No. UK, US and many European employers don't expect a photo, and many prefer not to receive one at screening. Use the space for results and tools instead.
How long should a CV for remote HR jobs be?
Two pages at most for experienced HR professionals and one page if you have under three years' experience. Remote recruiters scan quickly, so put your strongest results on page one.
Is CIPM membership recognised by employers outside Nigeria?
Recognition varies. Nigeria-facing and African employers usually know CIPM, while UK and US recruiters may not. Write the full name, and if you're targeting UK employers, look into the CIPM–CIPD mutual recognition route, which offers CIPD membership through a 60-minute assessment (fees as of October 2026).
Do I need SHRM-CP or aPHR to get a remote HR job?
No, they aren't required, but some US-based employers prefer them. At $350 to $499 for SHRM-CP and $400 for the aPHR (as of October 2026), they're worth it mainly if you're aiming at US companies and can't yet show strong results. A CV with clear numbers and named tools often matters more.
Can I get a remote HR job with only Nigerian HR experience?
Yes, if you present it well and apply for roles open to Nigeria. Remote recruiting, people operations for distributed teams and HR roles at African companies are the more realistic targets. Roles that manage employees in one foreign country usually want local legal knowledge and the right to work there.
What HR software should I learn if my CV has none?
Start with free or trial versions of a common ATS and HRIS, such as Workable or BambooHR, and get comfortable with spreadsheets (pivot tables, lookups). Only list a tool on your CV once you can use it for real tasks, since interviews often test it.
Should I write "remote" as the location for jobs I did from home?
Yes, if the job was genuinely remote, write "Remote" or "Remote (Lagos)". If it was hybrid, say "Lagos (hybrid)". Accurate location labels help recruiters see your real remote experience.
What salary can I expect from a remote HR job?
It depends on the employer, role and seniority. US figures are only a benchmark: the US Bureau of Labor Statistics put the median for HR specialists at $75,940 a year in May 2025, and offers to Nigeria-based workers are usually lower than US local pay. See our remote HR generalist salary guide for dollar and naira ranges.
Key takeaways
- A CV for remote HR jobs has to show results with numbers, named HR software and the ability to work across time zones, not just a list of HR duties.
- Put your location, time zone (WAT, UTC+1) and available hours in the header. Leave out photos, date of birth, state of origin, NIN and BVN.
- Rewrite each duty as action + scope + tool + result, and treat your knowledge of Nigerian payroll and labour rules as an asset.
- Tailor the CV to the role type: generalist, recruiter, coordinator or HR operations.
- List CIPM, CIPD, SHRM or HRCI credentials with full names. As of October 2026, US credentials cost $400 to $499 (about ₦545,000 to ₦680,000), so weigh them against your target market.
- Many remote HR roles are tied to one country. Check eligibility on the job ad before you tailor a CV for it.
Next steps
Take your current CV and rewrite your three most recent roles using the before-and-after table above. Then browse remote admin and HR jobs open to applicants in Nigeria. Each listing shows where applicants may live, so you can tailor your CV only for roles you can actually get.
