For most Nigerians aiming at remote HR work, the best certification depends on where the employer is. US-facing companies recognise SHRM-CP and the HRCI family (aPHRi, PHRi). UK and European employers look for CIPD. Pan-African employers hiring in Nigeria often accept CIPM alongside those. Specialist credentials such as WorldatWork's CCP only pay off once you're already working in that niche.

A certification won't get you hired remotely on its own, though. In the live remote HR ads we checked in October 2026, certifications were "preferred" while years of experience were a hard requirement. This guide covers what each credential costs in dollars and naira, which ones you can sit online from Lagos or Kano, how employers word them in real job ads, and how to pick one without wasting ₦600,000 on the wrong exam.

Quick answer

If you're starting out, HRCI's aPHRi ($400, online exams) or the CIPM Foundation stage (naira fees, online) are the cheapest credible options. If you have some HR experience and want US or global employers, take SHRM-CP or PHRi. For UK and European roles, aim for CIPD Level 5. If you already hold CIPM membership, the CIPD mutual recognition route is far cheaper than starting CIPD from scratch.

How we chose these certifications

We didn't rank these by popularity, and we haven't taken the exams ourselves. We kept a credential if it met at least three of these tests:

  • Real ads name it. It shows up in current remote HR job ads open to people in Nigeria or Africa.
  • You can sit it from Nigeria. Someone living in Nigeria can enrol and take the assessment, either online or at a test centre.
  • An independent body awards it. It comes from a recognised professional body, not a course seller grading its own work.
  • The cost makes sense. The price is reasonable for what it does for a remote application.

All prices below come from the awarding bodies' own pages, checked in October 2026. Fees change, so confirm on the official page before paying. Naira figures use ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026) and are rounded.

Comparison: the main HR certifications at a glance

The sections below explain each one, who it suits and the catch.

HRCI certifications: aPHRi, PHRi, SPHRi and GPHR

HR Certification Institute (HRCI) is a US-based certification body. It has a separate set of international credentials designed for people working outside the United States, so Nigerians don't have to study US employment law they'll never use. According to HRCI's certifications page, the aPHRi is for entry-level practitioners heading into HR roles outside the US. The PHRi is for practitioners outside the US applying HR principles locally, the SPHRi is for senior leaders outside the US, and the GPHR is for HR leaders with multinational responsibilities.

HRCI also says it is the only HR certification body offering year-round online exams. That matters if you live far from a test centre.

What HRCI exams cost

HRCI's exam fees page lists these totals as of October 2026, each made up of a $100 application fee plus the exam fee:

CredentialTotal feeApprox. naira
aPHRi$400₦545,000
PHRi$495₦674,000
SPHRi$595₦810,000
GPHR$595₦810,000

HRCI doesn't refund you if you withdraw after your application is approved. Only apply when you have a realistic study plan and a test date in mind.

Who should pick HRCI

The aPHRi is the most sensible paid starting point if you have no HR job yet but want a credential foreign recruiters recognise. The PHRi suits someone with a few years in a Nigerian HR department who wants to show they understand HR beyond one country. Leave the GPHR until you've actually managed HR across several countries: it's aimed at people already doing that work.

SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is the large US professional body for HR. Its two certifications, SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP, are the ones US employers and many global companies mention most often.

Eligibility

SHRM's eligibility page says the SHRM-CP needs no HR title, degree or previous HR experience, although working knowledge of HR is recommended. The SHRM-SCP needs at least three years of strategic-level HR work, with at least 1,000 hours a year. You can also qualify if you've held the SHRM-CP for three years and are moving into a strategic role. Part-time work and consulting hours for clients both count if they meet the hours standard.

Cost and testing windows

According to SHRM's international fees page, as of October 2026:

  • Early bird: $350 for members, $450 for non-members.
  • Standard rate: $399 for members, $499 for non-members (about ₦543,000 to ₦680,000).
  • Students on HR degree programmes: from $150.
  • What's included: every price includes a $50 non-refundable application fee, and standard-rate prices also include a $49 late fee.

The current testing window runs from 1 December 2026 to 15 February 2027. Standard-rate applications for it close on 24 December 2026, so anyone applying now pays the standard rate.

The catch for Nigerian candidates

The same SHRM page says the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP exams must be taken in person at an authorised Prometric testing centre. Before you pay, check Prometric's site for a centre you can actually reach, and budget for travel and possibly a night's stay. This is the biggest practical difference from HRCI and CIPM, which both let you write from home.

SHRM or HRCI?

Either will be recognised by a US-facing employer, and the fees are close. Pick SHRM-CP if the ads you're targeting name it specifically and you can get to a test centre. Pick aPHRi or PHRi if you want the flexibility of an online exam or prefer content built for practice outside the US. Paying for both is rarely worth it at the start of your career.

CIPD: the UK and European standard

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) is the UK's professional body for HR and people development. UK and many European employers use "CIPD qualified" as shorthand for a trained HR professional, the way US ads use SHRM.

CIPD offers foundation (Level 3), associate (Level 5) and advanced (Level 7) qualifications, usually taught through approved training centres and universities. CIPD's qualifications page explains that enrolling makes you a student member. Finishing a qualification gives you Foundation or Associate membership, and with enough experience you can progress to Chartered Membership or Chartered Fellowship.

What a CIPD course costs

CIPD itself doesn't set one course price, because each centre sets its own fee. As one example, ICS Learn's CIPD Level 5 Associate Diploma in People Management is fully online and costs £2,599 to £3,599 depending on the support package, charged in pounds, as of October 2026. CIPD student membership is extra, and average completion time is 9 to 12 months. Other centres charge differently, so compare a few.

Use CIPD's own provider checker before you pay any centre. CIPD also warns that people should not be expected to pay for training as a condition of employment. If a "recruiter" says you must buy a particular HR course to get a job, treat it as a scam warning.

Who should pick CIPD

Go for CIPD Level 5 if your target employers are in the UK or Europe, or if UK-headquartered companies hiring across Africa keep listing it. It's the most expensive general option here in naira terms, because both the course fee and the membership are in pounds. For a Nigerian beginner with no UK focus, it's hard to justify as a first credential.

CIPM: Nigeria's own HR body, and its bridge to CIPD

The Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM) is the Nigerian professional body for HR. It's the credential Nigerian employers know best, and pan-African employers hiring HR staff in Nigeria often list it.

How CIPM exams work

CIPM's exam FAQ sets out five stages: Foundation, Intermediate I, Intermediate II, Professional I and Professional II.

  • Exam diets: exams run online in March, June, September and December, and you can write from anywhere with a working computer and internet connection.
  • Membership: you must first register as a student member (the FAQ lists a ₦10,000 membership fee).
  • Time limit: you have seven years to finish all stages.
  • Exemptions: graduates in HR, industrial relations or personnel management can start at Intermediate II. Holders of a master's in those fields can start at Professional I.
  • Fees: fees are charged per paper and in naira. As of October 2026, the FAQ lists a single paper at about ₦12,475 at Foundation, rising to about ₦23,645 at Professional II. The fee table on the page is badly formatted, so confirm the exact amount with CIPM before paying.

In naira terms, that makes CIPM the cheapest serious HR credential on this list by a wide margin.

The CIPM to CIPD mutual recognition route

CIPM and CIPD signed a mutual recognition agreement on 17 September 2024. According to CIPD's page on the agreement, the grades map like this:

  • CIPM Associate members can become CIPD Associate members.
  • CIPM Full members can become CIPD Chartered members.
  • CIPM Fellows can become CIPD Chartered Fellows.

You apply with a form and an up-to-date CV, then complete a 60-minute professional discussion on Microsoft Teams. The fee is £120 for the Associate and Full member routes and £250 for Fellows, plus CIPD joining and membership fees.

For a Nigerian HR professional, this is probably the most cost-effective way to get a UK-recognised credential. Qualify through CIPM in naira, then bridge to CIPD for a fraction of the cost of a full CIPD Level 5 course. It takes longer, but the savings are large.

Specialist and short-course options

These aren't replacements for SHRM, HRCI, CIPD or CIPM. They add value when you're aiming at one specialist remote role.

WorldatWork CCP for compensation and benefits roles

The Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) is WorldatWork's credential for people who design and manage pay. WorldatWork's CCP page says you must pass eight exams, each with a preparation course, and exams are taken online. As of October 2026, prices start at $1,395 per course ($11,160 for all eight). An eight-course bundle costs $7,812, but the bundles are listed as available only in the US, Canada and Mexico, so Nigerian candidates should expect individual-course pricing.

At over ₦15 million for all eight courses at the individual rate, this is a credential to get when an employer is paying or when you already earn in dollars in a compensation role. It's not a way to break in.

AIHR certificate programmes

The Academy to Innovate HR (AIHR) sells self-paced online certificate programmes in areas such as people analytics, talent acquisition, HR business partnering and compensation. AIHR's pricing page lists one certificate programme at £865 with 12 months' access, or full access to all 17 programmes at £1,120 a year, as of October 2026. AIHR says its courses earn recertification credits with SHRM, HRCI and other bodies, but it doesn't present them as professional certifications in their own right.

Use AIHR to build a specific skill, such as people analytics for a remote people analytics role, and to keep an existing SHRM or HRCI credential current. Don't expect recruiters to weigh it the same as SHRM-CP or CIPD.

How remote HR job ads actually treat certifications

Job ads show what a certification is really worth. We opened several remote HR ads open to people in Nigeria in October 2026. Two were especially clear:

  • Accretio Africa. A remote, part-time Fractional HR Professional ad on Remotive is restricted to applicants in Nigeria. It says "Professional HR certification preferred (e.g., CIPM, CIPD, SHRM-CP/SCP, SPHRi)" but requires at least six years of progressive HR experience.
  • RightCom. A HR Business Partner, Anglophone Africa ad is listed as remote and based in Nigeria. It asks for "Active professional HR membership or certification (e.g., CIHRM, SHRM-CP, PHRi)", alongside 5+ years of HR experience and 2 to 3 years working across several African countries.

Both ads were live when checked in October 2026. Roles close and requirements change, so always read the live ad.

Two lessons stand out. First, employers accept several credentials as equivalent, so you don't need the "perfect" one. Second, experience is the hard filter. A certification helps you clear the "preferred" line and gives you shared vocabulary in interviews, but it won't make up for missing years. CIHRM, mentioned in the RightCom ad, is Ghana's HR professional body. It's worth knowing about if you plan to work across West Africa.

Which certification should you get? A decision guide

Match the credential to your stage and your target market:

Your situationSensible first step
No HR job yet, tight budgetCIPM Foundation or Intermediate
No HR job yet, want global rolesHRCI aPHRi
1 to 4 years in HR, US or global employersSHRM-CP or HRCI PHRi
Targeting UK or European employersCIPD Level 5, or CIPM then bridge to CIPD
Senior, managing HR across countriesGPHR or SHRM-SCP
Moving into pay and rewardsCore credential first, CCP later

Example (hypothetical): choosing on a ₦700,000 budget

Example (hypothetical): Amaka is an HR officer in Abuja with two years at a logistics company. She wants a remote people operations role with a US or European startup, and she has about ₦700,000 to spend.

  • Option one: SHRM-CP. At the standard non-member rate of $499 (about ₦680,000), it uses almost her whole budget. She'd also have to travel to a Prometric centre.
  • Option two: PHRi. At $495 (about ₦674,000), it's a similar price, but she can sit the exam online.
  • Option three: CIPM, then CIPD. She could carry on with CIPM papers in naira, then use the CIPD bridge (£120 plus CIPD fees) once she reaches Associate. That costs far less upfront and covers both Nigerian and UK expectations, but it takes longer.

If her target ads mostly name SHRM, the first option is the clearest signal. If they're mixed or UK-leaning, the third option is the cheaper long game. Either way, she'd get more from tightening her CV around measurable HR results than from adding a second credential.

Nigeria-specific things to plan for

  • Paying in dollars or pounds. SHRM, HRCI, CIPD and WorldatWork fees are charged in foreign currency. Check that your naira card's international spending limit covers the fee, or pay from a dollar account. Our guide to receiving and holding dollars in Nigeria compares the usual apps.
  • Online exam conditions. HRCI and CIPM online exams need a stable connection and power for the full sitting. Have an inverter or generator ready, and keep a MiFi or phone hotspot as a second connection. Read the proctoring rules before exam day, because losing your connection mid-exam can end your attempt.
  • Test-centre travel for SHRM. If the nearest Prometric centre is in another city, add transport and accommodation to the real cost.
  • Time zones for live classes. Live CIPD workshops run on UK time. Lagos is one hour ahead of London in winter (GMT) and on the same time in summer (BST), so UK evening sessions are workable after a Nigerian workday.
  • Recertification. SHRM, HRCI and CIPD expect ongoing professional development to keep your status active. Check each body's renewal rules and fees before you commit, because the cost doesn't end at the exam.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying the most famous credential instead of the one your target ads ask for. Collect 10 to 15 real ads for roles you want and count which certifications they name.
  • Paying for "guaranteed placement" HR courses. No legitimate certification body promises a job. Our guide to spotting remote job scams covers the warning signs.
  • Treating a certificate as a substitute for experience. Both ads above set years of experience as the hard requirement. Volunteer HR work, an internal transfer into HR or contract HR projects build that record.
  • Starting senior credentials too early. The GPHR and SHRM-SCP assume senior or multi-country responsibility. Interviewers will test for it.
  • Ignoring the tools. Remote HR teams work in HR information systems, applicant tracking systems and employer-of-record platforms. The remote HR generalist career guide lists the tools worth learning.

Frequently asked questions

Is SHRM recognised in Nigeria?

Yes. SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP are internationally recognised, and Nigeria-based remote roles do list them. One example is the Accretio Africa ad checked in October 2026, which named SHRM-CP/SCP alongside CIPM and CIPD. Nigerian employers still tend to know CIPM best.

Can I write the SHRM-CP exam online from Nigeria?

No. As of October 2026, SHRM says both SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP must be taken in person at an authorised Prometric testing centre. If you need an online exam, HRCI's aPHRi and PHRi or CIPM's exams are the alternatives.

Which HR certification is cheapest for a beginner in Nigeria?

CIPM is the cheapest credible option, with exam fees charged in naira per paper. Among the international bodies, HRCI's aPHRi costs $400 (about ₦545,000 at ₦1,362 to $1) and needs no HR experience. The SHRM-CP also needs no experience but costs more at the standard rate.

Is CIPM enough for international remote HR jobs?

Sometimes. Pan-African employers hiring in Nigeria do list CIPM, but UK, European and US employers are more likely to recognise CIPD, SHRM or HRCI. The CIPM–CIPD mutual recognition agreement lets CIPM members gain matching CIPD membership through a 60-minute assessment, which closes much of that gap.

Should I get CIPD or SHRM for remote HR jobs?

Choose by the employer's market. CIPD carries more weight with UK and European employers, while SHRM is better known by US companies. If your target ads mix both, either will usually be accepted, as the ads above show by listing several credentials as alternatives.

Do I need a certification to get a remote recruiter job?

Usually not. Remote recruiting roles tend to care more about your sourcing results, applicant tracking system skills and hiring numbers than about a general HR credential. See our remote recruiter career guide for what employers test for.

How long does it take to get an HR certification?

It varies a lot. SHRM and HRCI exams can be prepared for in a few months of steady study. A CIPD Level 5 course averages 9 to 12 months at one major provider. CIPM gives you up to seven years to finish all five stages, though graduates with exemptions finish much sooner.

Will an HR certification increase my remote salary?

There's no reliable data showing a fixed pay rise for Nigeria-based remote HR workers with a certification. Pay depends mostly on the role, your experience and the employer's market. See our HR generalist salary guide for current ranges.

Key takeaways

  • Match the credential to the employer's market: SHRM or HRCI for US-facing roles, CIPD for UK and Europe, CIPM for Nigerian and pan-African roles.
  • HRCI and CIPM exams run online. SHRM exams must be taken in person at a Prometric centre (as of October 2026).
  • HRCI's aPHRi ($400) and CIPM (naira fees) are the most affordable starting points, and SHRM-CP is close in price to PHRi.
  • CIPM members can bridge to CIPD membership for £120 plus CIPD fees, which costs far less than a full CIPD course.
  • In the live remote HR ads we checked, certifications were preferred while years of experience were required.
