Remote people analytics jobs suit people who can do two things together: understand HR, and work with data using SQL, a spreadsheet or BI tool, and basic statistics. The work turns employee data (hiring, pay, performance, attrition, survey results) into answers that managers can act on, and most of it is done on a laptop. So it can be done from Lagos or Enugu.
The catch is that these roles are fewer and more senior than general HR or data jobs. Many ads are also limited to the US or to particular countries. In this guide, we explain what the job involves, which skills employers ask for, which tools you need to know now and which can wait, and what one live ad open to EMEA asks for as of October 2026. We also cover how a Nigeria-based HR officer or data analyst can build towards a remote role without overspending on courses.
Quick answer
People analytics roles (people analyst, HR data analyst, people data scientist) use employee data to answer workforce questions. Employers usually want SQL, Excel or Google Sheets, a BI tool such as Power BI or Tableau, basic statistics, and enough HR knowledge to ask the right questions. Senior roles add Python or R. Some ads are open to EMEA, which includes Nigeria, but many are limited to one country, so check each ad's location rules.
What people analytics jobs involve
People analytics (also called HR analytics or workforce analytics) means using data about employees to improve decisions about hiring, pay, retention and how teams work. A people analyst is a data analyst whose subject is the workforce.
Typical questions a remote people analyst answers:
- Why are engineers leaving within their first year, and which teams lose the most?
- How long does it take to fill a role, and where do candidates drop out of the hiring process?
- Are people in the same role and level paid fairly across gender, location or tenure?
- What did the last engagement survey say, and did anything change afterwards?
- How many people will the company need next year, and in which countries?
The day-to-day work is a mix of building and maintaining dashboards, pulling data from the HR system (the HRIS, or human resources information system), cleaning messy records, running analyses and writing short reports for HR leaders and managers. In bigger teams, the work moves from describing what happened to predicting it. Canonical's Manager, People Analytics ad (checked October 2026), for example, talks about moving "from descriptive reporting toward predictive and prescriptive insights" such as predicting attrition risk.
People analytics overlaps with workforce planning (forecasting headcount) and compensation analysis. If either of those is your main interest, see our guides to remote workforce planning jobs and remote compensation and benefits jobs.
Remote people analytics job titles and what they mean
Titles vary a lot between companies, so search for several of them. This table shows how the common titles usually differ. It's based on how ads describe them, not on a formal standard.
| Job title | What the role mostly does | Usual background |
|---|---|---|
| HR data analyst / HRIS analyst | Reports, data quality, HR system set-up | HR operations or data |
| People analyst | Dashboards, analysis, survey results | Data analysis plus HR |
| People analytics specialist | Projects such as attrition or engagement studies | Analyst with some research skill |
| People data scientist | Statistical models, predictions | Statistics, Python or R |
| People analytics manager or lead | Runs the team, sets priorities | Several years of analytics |
Entry-level remote openings are rare. Companies usually hire a first people analyst once they have a few hundred staff, and they want that person to work without much supervision. If you have no data or HR experience yet, start with remote data analyst jobs for beginners or entry-level remote HR jobs and move across later.
The skills employers ask for
Ads for these roles ask for skills in four groups. You don't need all of them on day one, but you need some strength in each.
Data and statistics skills
- SQL. This is the most-requested technical skill. You'll pull headcount, hires and exits from databases and join them to pay or survey tables. Canonical's people analytics manager ad lists "SQL or other databases" as a requirement.
- Spreadsheets. Excel or Google Sheets for quick analysis, pivot tables, lookups and checking numbers before they go into a dashboard.
- Statistics. At analyst level, this means averages and medians, percentages and rates (attrition rate, offer acceptance rate), correlation, simple regression and comparing two groups. Data scientist roles add modelling. The Canonical ad asks for "advanced statistics" and data wrangling.
- Python or R. These are often listed as preferred for analysts and required for people data scientists. Both are free and open source, which helps if you're learning on a budget.
HR knowledge
This is the skill that separates a people analyst from a general data analyst. You need to know how a hiring funnel works, what a performance review cycle looks like, how pay bands and levels are structured, and what voluntary and involuntary attrition mean. Without it, you'll produce correct numbers that answer the wrong question.
If you're coming from HR in Nigeria, you already have this. Experience running payroll, onboarding, appraisals or exit interviews counts. Write it on your CV in terms of data: how many employees, which records you kept, what reports you produced.
Communication and storytelling
Most people analytics work ends in a slide, a dashboard or a one-page note for someone who isn't a data person. Canonical's ad asks for the ability to translate "business questions into research objectives" and to pick suitable methods. Remote teams rely on written updates, so clear written English matters more than it would in an office. Our guide on improving written communication for remote work covers this.
Data privacy and ethics
Employee data is sensitive: salaries, health information, disciplinary records, sometimes ethnicity or religion. A people analyst has to keep it secure, only show data at a level where individuals can't be identified, and understand the law. Canonical's ad mentions keeping the people data stack "privacy-compliant (including GDPR)". GDPR is the EU's General Data Protection Regulation, and it applies to many European employers.
In Nigeria, the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, signed on 12 June 2023, set up the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) and replaced the 2019 NDPR regulations. If you analyse data on Nigerian employees, or work for a Nigerian company, this law applies. Being able to talk about GDPR and the NDPA in an interview is a real advantage. For roles that focus on this area, see remote data privacy analyst jobs.
People analytics tools: what to learn first and what can wait
Many tools appear in people analytics ads, and nobody knows them all. The useful approach is to learn one tool from each layer well and recognise the rest. The table groups common tools by what they do. The tools are named as examples, not recommendations of particular vendors.
| Layer | Example tools | Learn when |
|---|---|---|
| Spreadsheets | Excel, Google Sheets | Now |
| Query language | SQL (any dialect) | Now |
| BI and dashboards | Power BI, Tableau, Looker, Superset | Now (pick one) |
| HR systems (HRIS) | Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, BambooHR, HiBob | On the job, or by reading the docs |
| Survey platforms | Qualtrics, Culture Amp | On the job |
| Programming | Python (pandas) or R | After SQL and BI |
| Data engineering | dbt, Airbyte, Trino | Senior or data science roles |
The core stack: spreadsheets, SQL and one BI tool
If you can pull data with SQL, check it in a spreadsheet and present it in Power BI or Tableau, you can do most analyst-level work. Which BI tool should you pick? Look at ads for the roles you want and count. Microsoft-heavy companies lean towards Power BI; others use Tableau or Looker. Our planned guides to Power BI developer jobs and Tableau developer jobs cover each in more depth.
HR systems you'll meet at work
Workday is the HRIS that comes up most often in ads for larger companies, and some ads ask specifically for Workday reporting skills. You can't easily get hands-on access to Workday as an individual, so don't panic if an ad mentions it. Show that you understand how HR data is structured (employee records, job history, positions, org hierarchy), and mention any HRIS you've used, even a local payroll system.
Advanced tools for senior roles
Data science and manager roles go further. As of October 2026, Canonical's people analytics manager ad lists Python, R or JavaScript, visualisation tools such as Superset or Tableau, and "nice to have" tools including dbt, Airbyte, Trino, Temporal, Docker and Kubernetes. It also mentions building AI agents that surface insights to managers. That gives you an idea of where the senior end of the field is going, but you don't need any of this for a first people analyst job.
What a real remote people analytics ad asks for
Here's one live ad we opened, so you can see the requirements in context.
Canonical, Manager, People Analytics (job ad on Greenhouse, checked 27 October 2026):
- Location: "Home based – Americas" or "Home based – EMEA". EMEA stands for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, so Nigeria falls inside it, as long as Canonical can hire in your country. Confirm that when you apply.
- Team: leads a group of people data scientists, software engineers and UX designers, run like a product team.
- Must-haves: a background in data science, mathematics or engineering; advanced statistics; SQL; coding in Python, R or JavaScript; visualisation tools; leadership experience; business-level English.
- Travel: company events two to four times a year, for up to two weeks each time.
- Pay: no figure published. The ad says pay considers location, experience and performance, plus a bonus or commission.
Two lessons from this ad. First, "home based" and EMEA wording is the kind of signal you're looking for. Second, international travel is part of the deal. A Nigerian passport usually means applying for visas for company events, so have your passport valid and be ready to explain how quickly you can get visas. This is a manager role, and ads change or close fast, so treat it as an example of what employers want rather than a vacancy to rely on.
Can you get a remote people analytics job from Nigeria?
Yes, when the employer accepts candidates based in Nigeria. Many don't. People analytics ads use location wording in a few common ways:
- "Remote – US" or "Remote – UK" usually means you must already live in that country and have the right to work there. Applying from Nigeria wastes your time.
- "Remote – EMEA" or "Home based – EMEA" can include Nigeria, but some companies only hire in EMEA countries where they have a legal entity or payroll partner. Read the full ad and the careers FAQ.
- "Remote – worldwide" or "anywhere" is the most open, but it's uncommon for people analytics because of data privacy rules.
Our guides on what EMEA means in a remote job description and how to verify whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents go into this in detail.
Employee, contractor or employer of record
A foreign company may hire you as an independent contractor, or as an employee through an employer-of-record (EOR) provider that handles Nigerian payroll for them. The difference affects your tax, leave and job security. We explain the trade-offs in contractor vs employee when a foreign company hires you from Nigeria.
Data access and privacy can limit Nigeria-based hires
People analytics touches salary and personal records, so some companies restrict who can access that data and from which countries. This is one reason ads are often more location-restricted than ads for, say, marketing analysts. If you get to interview stage, ask directly how data access works for someone in Nigeria.
Time zones and the Nigerian set-up
Nigeria is on West Africa Time (UTC+1) all year. That fits European and UK teams well: Lagos is one hour ahead of London in winter and on the same time in summer, and on the same time as Central Europe in winter. US teams are harder. US Eastern is 6 hours behind Lagos from 1 November 2026 (5 in summer), so overlapping meetings fall in your afternoon and evening.
Dashboards refresh and reports are due on fixed days. So power and internet backup matter: an inverter or solar set-up, plus two internet providers or a MiFi and a phone hotspot. A laptop that can handle Power BI or large spreadsheets matters too.
How much remote people analytics jobs pay
There's no reliable public source for what Nigeria-based people analysts are paid, so we won't make up a range. Here's what the benchmarks show and how to read them.
| Benchmark | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| US data scientists (BLS) | $120,230 a year | Median, May 2025, US-based workers |
| US HR specialists (BLS) | $75,940 a year | Median, May 2025, US-based workers |
| UK people analytics (ITJobsWatch) | £63,000 a year | Median from UK job ads, 2026, small sample |
Sources: the US Bureau of Labor Statistics pages for data scientists and human resources specialists, and ITJobsWatch's people analytics page. ITJobsWatch quoted no remote-specific salaries for the six months to 27 October 2026, so its UK median covers all people analytics ads it tracked and is based on very few of them.
People analytics sits between these two US occupations. At WorkRemote's house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), the US HR specialist median works out to about ₦103 million a year and the data scientist median to about ₦164 million.
Don't plan around those numbers. They're what people living in the US or UK earn. Many international employers adjust pay for location (Canonical's ad says so directly), and pay for workers based in Nigeria is usually well below US local pay. What pushes your offer up is how technical you are (SQL plus Python earns more than reporting alone), seniority, and whether the employer pays one global rate or location-based rates. Our planned guide on how international companies set salaries for remote employees explains the main approaches. For general analyst pay in dollars and naira, see our data analyst salary guide.
How to move into remote people analytics from Nigeria
There are two common routes in: from HR, or from data analysis. The steps below work for either. Spend more time on whichever half you're weaker in.
- Pick your starting side honestly. HR officers usually need to build SQL and BI skills. Data analysts usually need to learn how HR works and what HR leaders care about.
- Learn SQL properly. Aim to write joins, group-bys and window functions without looking them up. This is the skill most likely to be tested.
- Choose one BI tool and build two or three dashboards. Headcount and attrition over time, a hiring funnel, and pay distribution by level are the classic three.
- Learn the HR metrics vocabulary. Know attrition rate, time to hire, offer acceptance rate, regretted attrition, span of control, internal mobility and eNPS (employee Net Promoter Score), and know how each is calculated.
- Build a portfolio project with fake or public data. Never use a real employer's staff data, even with names removed. That would break confidentiality and possibly the NDPA.
- Get experience inside your current job. If you're in HR, offer to own the monthly HR report or clean up the HRIS data. If you're an analyst, ask to support HR's next survey or headcount plan. One real project beats three courses.
- Apply to adjacent roles too. HRIS analyst, HR operations analyst and people operations roles often lead to people analytics. See our guide to the people operations specialist role.
Example (hypothetical): a portfolio project that shows both halves
Example (hypothetical): Chiamaka, an HR officer at a Lagos logistics company, builds a fictional dataset of 500 employees with hire dates, exit dates, departments, levels and salary bands. She writes SQL to calculate monthly attrition by department and builds a Power BI dashboard. She then writes a one-page memo for an imaginary HR director: "First-year attrition in the dispatch team is about double the company rate. Most leavers left between months three and six. Recommend reviewing onboarding and the probation pay step." That memo, more than the dashboard, is what shows she can do the job. She links the SQL, the dashboard screenshots and the memo from her CV.
Courses and certificates worth considering
No single certificate gets you hired in people analytics. Use courses to fill specific gaps, and show the results in a portfolio. Two well-known options, with prices as of October 2026:
| Course | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Wharton People Analytics (Coursera) | Free to enrol; certificate and graded work cost extra | Understanding the ideas |
| AIHR People Analytics Certificate | $1,125 for 12 months' access | HR people learning Excel and Power BI analysis |
The Wharton People Analytics course on Coursera covers performance evaluation, hiring, attrition, organisational network analysis and talent analytics across four modules. The course page says plainly that it's "an introduction to the theory of people analytics" and isn't meant to prepare you for complex analysis. Treat it as background, not technical training.
The AIHR People Analytics Certificate Program costs $1,125 (about ₦1.53 million at ₦1,362 to $1, CBN NFEM rate, 23 October 2026). It offers about 38 hours of self-paced learning covering HR data analysis, statistics, visualisation and a capstone, and you work in Excel and Power BI. The page doesn't mention SQL, Python or R, so you'd still need to learn SQL elsewhere. That's a lot of money in naira. Spend it only if you've already learnt the free basics and want a structured HR-focused programme.

Mistakes to avoid
- Applying to US-only or UK-only ads. Read the location line before anything else.
- Listing tools without proof. "Power BI, SQL, Python" on a CV means little without a link to something you built.
- Using real employee data in a portfolio. It can cost you your current job and breaks data protection rules.
- Ignoring the HR side. Data analysts who can't explain what drives attrition or how pay bands work struggle in interviews.
- Paying for expensive certificates first. Free SQL practice and one well-built dashboard will move you further than a costly certificate.
- Paying anyone to "secure" a people analytics job. Real employers don't charge applicants. See our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a degree in statistics to work in people analytics?
No, not for analyst roles. A degree in HR, business, psychology, economics or a technical subject is common, and proven SQL, BI and statistics skills matter more. People data scientist and manager roles more often ask for a quantitative background, as Canonical's ad does.
Is SQL required for people analytics jobs?
For most analyst roles, yes, or it's strongly preferred. Smaller companies may get by with Excel and an HRIS reporting tool, but SQL is what lets you combine HR, pay and survey data, and it's the skill interviewers test most often.
Can an HR officer in Nigeria switch to remote people analytics?
Yes, though it usually takes several months of focused learning. Your HR knowledge is the harder half to teach, so build SQL and one BI tool, create a portfolio project with fictional data, and take on reporting work in your current job. HRIS or HR operations analyst roles are a common stepping stone.
Which is better for people analytics, Power BI or Tableau?
Neither is better overall. Pick the one that appears most in ads for the roles you want. Power BI is common at companies that use Microsoft tools, and Tableau and Looker show up at many tech companies. The skills carry over, so learning a second tool later is quicker.
Are there entry-level remote people analytics jobs?
Very few. Most remote ads want a few years of analytics or HR experience. Graduates usually get in through a data analyst, HR assistant or HRIS role first, then move across.
Does a "Remote – EMEA" people analytics job include Nigeria?
Often, but not always. Nigeria is in the EMEA region, but some employers only hire in EMEA countries where they have a company or payroll partner. Check the ad and the careers FAQ, or ask the recruiter before you spend time on an application.
How do I get paid in dollars for a remote people analytics job?
It depends on how you're hired: as a contractor or through an employer of record. Contractors often invoice through platforms such as Deel or receive transfers into a dollar account. See our guide on receiving dollar payments in Nigeria for apps, fees and limits.
Key takeaways
- People analytics means using employee data to answer questions about hiring, pay, retention and engagement, and the work can be done remotely.
- The core skill set is SQL, spreadsheets, one BI tool, basic statistics and solid HR knowledge. Python or R and data engineering tools come later.
- Some ads are open to EMEA, which includes Nigeria. Many are limited to a single country, and data privacy rules make location restrictions more common here.
- US and UK pay figures are benchmarks only. Pay for workers based in Nigeria is usually lower and depends on the employer's location policy.
- One portfolio project built on fictional data, with a clear written recommendation, does more for you than an expensive certificate.
Next steps
Pick the half of the skill set you're weaker in and start there this week: SQL if you come from HR, HR metrics if you come from data. When you're ready to apply, search for "people analytics", "people analyst" and "HR data" on WorkRemote's remote job listings. Each listing shows where applicants may live. On the results page, use "Get email updates" to get a free daily email of new matching roles. You can also browse the admin and HR category, and read our data analyst career guide for the technical path in more detail.
