Entry-Level Remote HR Jobs for Beginners: HR Assistant and Coordinator Roles You Can Do From Nigeria
Which entry-level remote HR jobs Nigerians can get: HR assistant and coordinator skills, pay benchmarks, CIPM vs aPHR costs and where to find openings.

Entry-level remote HR jobs exist, but they rarely say "entry-level HR" in the title. Look for HR assistant, HR coordinator, recruiting coordinator, people operations associate and HR administrator. Most ask for six months to two years of admin, HR or customer-facing experience, so a true zero-experience remote HR job is uncommon.
From Nigeria, you have three realistic routes. The first is Nigerian and African companies that hire HR staff remotely within Nigeria. The second is recruitment and staffing firms. The third is international employers whose ads accept applicants from Africa or EMEA. US-only HR assistant jobs are usually off the table, because HR work is tied to the employer's local employment law.
This guide covers what each beginner HR title involves, the skills and tools employers ask for, what the pay looks like, and how to find remote HR coordinator jobs. It also covers the certifications worth paying for, the unpaid "HR intern" ads you should think twice about, and a step-by-step plan for landing your first role.
Quick answer
Entry-level remote HR jobs are mainly HR assistant, HR coordinator, recruiting coordinator and people operations associate roles. They involve onboarding paperwork, keeping employee records, scheduling interviews and answering staff questions. Employers usually want strong written English, Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 skills, attention to detail and some admin experience. Nigerians have the best odds with Nigeria-based remote roles and ads open to Africa or EMEA. Always confirm the location rules on the live ad.
What counts as an entry-level remote HR job
HR (human resources) at entry level is mostly operations: paperwork, systems, scheduling and answering questions. Strategy, policy design and handling difficult employee relations cases come later. Those operational tasks are exactly why the first rung of HR can work remotely. Nearly all of it happens inside an HR system, an inbox and a calendar.
| Job title | What you actually do | What employers usually ask |
|---|---|---|
| HR assistant | Records, onboarding documents, staff queries | Admin experience, accuracy, MS Office or Google Workspace |
| HR coordinator | Runs onboarding, schedules, HR system updates | 1 to 2 years in admin or HR |
| Recruiting coordinator | Interview scheduling, candidate emails, ATS updates | Organisation, calendar skills, clear writing |
| People operations associate | HR admin plus contracts, benefits and payroll support | Often 1 to 3 years in HR or operations |
| HR administrator / HR virtual assistant | HR paperwork for a small firm or agency | Varies; sometimes no HR experience |
People operations is a newer name for HR that many tech companies use, and the work overlaps heavily. An ATS (applicant tracking system) is the software that tracks job applicants, such as Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby or Workable. An HRIS (human resources information system) stores employee records, such as BambooHR, HiBob, Rippling or Workday.
Recruiting coordinator roles sit on the hiring side of HR and are often the easiest door in for organised beginners. We cover that title in detail in our guide to recruitment coordinator jobs for beginners.
HR assistant vs HR coordinator: what's the difference?
An HR assistant supports; an HR coordinator owns a process. Companies use the titles loosely, so read the duties, not the title.
- HR assistant: completes tasks someone else assigns. Examples are filing signed contracts, updating employee addresses in the HRIS, chasing missing documents and drafting standard letters.
- HR coordinator: makes sure a whole process runs on time. Examples are onboarding ten new hires in a month, coordinating the performance review cycle and keeping the leave tracker accurate. Coordinators often manage the calendar for several managers.
In practice, an HR assistant role is the better target if you have no HR experience at all. An HR coordinator role fits better if you already have one or two years of admin, operations or customer support work behind you, because coordinators are expected to work with less supervision. For an idea of where both lead, see our HR generalist career guide and our people operations specialist guide.
Remote HR assistant jobs: skills and requirements
Remote HR assistant jobs mostly test whether you are accurate, discreet and easy to work with in writing. Employers can train you on their HR system. They can't easily train carelessness out of you.
Hard skills employers look for
- Spreadsheets: sorting, filtering, VLOOKUP or XLOOKUP, and simple trackers in Excel or Google Sheets. Leave, headcount and onboarding are often tracked this way.
- Document handling: formatting offer letters and contracts in Word or Google Docs, saving files with consistent names and managing shared folders.
- Calendar management: scheduling across time zones in Google Calendar or Outlook without double-booking anyone.
- HR and recruiting software: experience with any HRIS or ATS helps, but most ads accept "willing to learn". Free product tutorials from tools like BambooHR or Greenhouse are enough to talk sensibly about them.
- Basic HR knowledge: the employee lifecycle (hiring, onboarding, payroll inputs, leave, performance reviews, offboarding) and why records must be kept accurately.
Soft skills that matter more remotely
- Clear, polite written English. Most HR contact with staff happens through Slack, Teams or email.
- Discretion. You'll see salaries, medical notes and disciplinary records. A single leak can end a remote HR career.
- Following up without being told. Chasing a new hire for a missing ID document is half of the job.
- Being comfortable asking questions in writing when instructions are unclear.
Education and experience
Requirements vary widely. In the US, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) says HR specialist roles typically need a bachelor's degree. It also notes that people often gain the required experience first as HR assistants or customer service representatives (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, HR specialists). Many Nigerian employers ask for a degree or HND for HR roles. If you don't have one, see our guide to remote HR jobs that don't require a degree.
Experience is where beginners get stuck. Most remote HR coordinator ads ask for 1 to 3 years. Admin, front desk, customer service, school administration, NYSC posting duties and church or association secretary work all count if you describe them in HR terms (more on this below).
Can Nigerians apply for entry-level remote HR jobs?
Yes, when the employer accepts applicants living in Nigeria. For HR, that condition rules out more jobs than in most fields. HR teams handle contracts, payroll inputs, leave rules and compliance under the employer's local labour law. A US company hiring a remote HR assistant usually wants someone who already understands US employment rules and can legally work in the US. The same applies to UK-only HR roles.
Here is how the main location types play out for HR beginners:
| Ad says | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Remote, Nigeria | Open to you; usually a Nigerian or African company, paid in naira |
| Remote, Africa or EMEA | Often open; check that Nigeria isn't excluded in the small print |
| Remote, worldwide or "anywhere" | Possible, usually as a contractor; confirm time-zone hours |
| Remote, US or UK only | Usually not open to Nigeria-based applicants |
EMEA stands for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, but some EMEA ads quietly mean "Europe plus a few countries". Our explainer on what EMEA means in a remote job ad shows how to read these. If an ad is vague, here's how to check whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents before you spend an hour on the application.
One encouraging sign: Nigerian companies do post remote HR roles for people in Nigeria. As of 27 October 2026, Moniepoint's public job board listed a "Talent Acquisition Specialist" and an "Early Careers Talent Acquisition Specialist" marked "Remote, Lagos, Nigeria" (Moniepoint job board on Greenhouse). Those are recruiting roles rather than HR assistant roles, and the board doesn't show experience requirements, so open each ad to check. Openings change weekly.
How much entry-level remote HR jobs pay
Pay depends on where the employer is based, your contract type (employee or contractor) and which time zone you cover. No reliable published figure exists for what Nigeria-based remote HR assistants earn from foreign employers. Treat the numbers below as benchmarks, not offers.
- US benchmark: HR assistants (SOC 43-4161) had a US median wage of $47,710 a year in May 2023, with the 10th percentile at $34,490 and the 90th at $64,250 (BLS OEWS, May 2023). These figures are for workers based in the US.
- The next rung up: HR specialists in the US had a median of $75,940 a year in May 2025 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook). That is where a good HR assistant can aim after a few years.
- A published remote range: Epoch AI, a research organisation, advertised a fully remote People Operations Associate role (2+ years' experience) at $95,000 to $139,000 a year. The ad said pay depends on seniority and location (Epoch AI job ad on Lever). Applications closed on 31 August 2026. Ranges like that are rare and not beginner level.
Remote pay for Nigeria-based workers is usually well below US local pay, especially at assistant level. Many foreign employers set salaries by the worker's location. Nigerian employers hiring remotely within Nigeria pay in naira. For the role one step up, our HR generalist salary guide shows dollar and naira figures.
Example (hypothetical): a UK staffing firm offers you $900 a month as a contractor to coordinate interview scheduling. At WorkRemote's house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), that's about ₦1,225,800 a month before transfer fees and tax. Before you accept, compare the offer with a local naira job, counting the costs of evening hours, data and power backup.
How to find remote HR coordinator jobs
Finding remote HR coordinator jobs comes down to searching the right titles in the right places. Many good roles never use the word "HR".
Search these titles, not just "HR assistant"
- HR coordinator, HR administrator, HR operations associate
- People operations coordinator, people operations associate, people partner associate
- Recruiting coordinator, talent acquisition coordinator, recruitment administrator
- Onboarding coordinator, onboarding specialist, employee experience coordinator
- HR virtual assistant (common with small firms and staffing agencies)
Where to look
- Remote job boards that show location rules. On WorkRemote's admin and HR listings, each listing shows the company, its website and where applicants may live.
- Company career pages. Many companies post on Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby or Workable. Searching Google for
site:jobs.lever.co "people operations" remote Africaorsite:job-boards.greenhouse.io "HR coordinator" EMEAsurfaces ads straight from the employer's system. - Nigerian and pan-African companies with remote teams. Fintechs, health-tech and logistics firms often hire HR staff remotely within Nigeria. Check their career pages monthly.
- Recruitment agencies and staffing firms. Agencies that place staff across Africa need coordinators to schedule interviews and manage candidates. This is real HR experience, even when the client is abroad.
- Employer-of-record and global payroll companies. An employer of record (EOR) legally employs workers on behalf of foreign companies. EORs and global payroll providers hire support and onboarding staff to process contracts and documents across many countries, which builds HR operations skills.
- LinkedIn. Follow HR and talent teams at companies you like. Their recruiters often post roles before job boards pick them up.
Read the ad before you apply
For each HR coordinator ad, check four things: where applicants may live, which hours you must cover, whether it's an employee or contractor role, and the experience asked for. If an ad asks for "2+ years" and you have 18 months of strong admin work, apply anyway. If it needs US payroll or US benefits experience, skip it.
How to get an entry-level remote HR job with no HR experience
Beginners get hired for remote HR work by proving three things: they are organised, they write clearly, and they can be trusted with confidential information. Here is a practical order of work.
- Pick one target title. HR assistant or recruiting coordinator is the usual starting point. Don't apply for "HR business partner" roles yet.
- Learn the HR basics in a few weeks. Study the employee lifecycle, onboarding checklists, leave tracking, the basics of payroll inputs and data privacy. Free tutorials from HR software providers are useful here.
- Get hands-on with one ATS and one HRIS. Many offer free trials or demo videos. Being able to say "I set up a sample hiring pipeline in a free Workable trial" beats "familiar with HR software".
- Build three small portfolio pieces (see below) and keep them in a shared Google Drive folder.
- Rewrite your CV in HR language. Our planned guide on writing a CV for remote HR jobs goes deeper.
- Get some HR experience locally if you have none. Volunteer to handle onboarding or records for an NGO, school, church or small business. Even three months counts.
- Apply consistently. Ten tailored applications a week to roles that accept Nigeria beats fifty random ones.
Portfolio pieces that work for HR beginners
- An onboarding checklist for a hypothetical remote company, covering day one, week one and month one.
- A leave and absence tracker in Google Sheets with formulas that calculate remaining days.
- An interview scheduling template showing slots in WAT, GMT and US Eastern time.
- A sample offer letter and a polite "missing documents" reminder email.
Label every piece clearly as a sample you created. Never present it as work for a real company.
Example (hypothetical): turning admin experience into an HR CV bullet. Before: "Responsible for office records." After: "Kept records for 45 staff up to date in Google Sheets. Cut missing-document follow-ups by setting a weekly check every Friday." Only use numbers that are true for you.
Are HR certifications worth it for beginners?
A certificate helps when you have no HR job yet, because it shows you've learned the basics. It won't replace experience. The two most relevant options for a Nigerian beginner:
| Certification | Cost (as of October 2026) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| CIPM (Nigeria) | ₦10,000 application plus ₦12,000 acceptance; exam stages from ₦55,440 (Foundation) to ₦70,050 (Professional II) | HR jobs with Nigerian or African employers |
| aPHR (HRCI) | $300 exam plus $100 application (about ₦544,800 at ₦1,362 to $1) | Applying to US-linked or international employers |
The Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM) examination route requires a degree or HND and five SSCE credits including English and Mathematics. Exams run online four times a year, in March, June, September and December. If you pay full fees for all five stages, the application, acceptance and exam fees come to ₦326,930 before membership dues and study materials. CIPM says fees are reviewed from time to time (CIPM examination route).
The aPHR (Associate Professional in Human Resources) from HRCI requires no HR experience. You can take it at a Pearson VUE centre or online through OnVUE, and the exam fee isn't refunded once your application is approved (HRCI aPHR page). If most of your target employers are in Nigeria, start with CIPM. For more options, see our guide to HR certifications for remote jobs.
What working remotely in HR from Nigeria looks like day to day
Time zones
HR staff need to answer people while they're working, so your hours follow the team. UK hours of 9am to 5pm are 10am to 6pm in Lagos while the UK is on GMT (from 25 October 2026), and the same hours when the UK is on BST in summer. US Eastern 9am to 5pm is 3pm to 11pm in Lagos from 1 November 2026, when New York moves to EST. Some ads state a preference; Epoch AI's ad, for example, asked for overlap with UTC-8 and UTC. Late US hours are sustainable for some people and draining for others, so decide before you apply.
Power, internet and privacy
HR work involves video interviews and calls with upset employees, so a dropped connection looks bad. Most remote workers in Nigeria use an inverter or solar backup and two internet options, such as a MiFi plus a phone hotspot on a different network. Use a password manager, lock your screen, and never download employee files to a shared family laptop. European employers will expect you to follow GDPR rules on personal data.
Contracts and getting paid
Foreign companies usually hire Nigeria-based HR staff either as independent contractors or through an employer of record. The difference affects leave, notice and tax, and we explain it in contractor or employee when a foreign company hires you. For dollar payments, see how to receive dollars in Nigeria. For your obligations under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, read our tax guide for remote workers.
Red flags in beginner HR job ads
Scammers like "HR assistant" titles because beginners expect admin work and few questions. Watch for these:
- Paying to start. Any request for a "training fee", "onboarding kit" or "certificate processing" payment is a scam. Legitimate employers don't charge you to work.
- Sensitive details too early. Requests for your BVN, NIN, bank login or passport scan before you've had a real interview and a written offer.
- Sales disguised as HR. Some "HR assistant" ads turn out to be commission-only recruitment or sales work. Read the duties and pay terms carefully.
- Interviews only on Telegram or WhatsApp, with no company email address or verifiable website.
Unpaid roles are a separate issue: they aren't scams, but they cost you. For example, Transparent Hiring advertised a remote "HR Assistant Intern" role for EMEA in CET ±3 hours. It was a six-month unpaid internship requiring C1 English and no prior HR experience, with an evaluation for a possible long-term role at the end (Transparent Hiring ad on Breezy HR). Unpaid internships can give you a reference, but six months of free work with data and power costs is a lot to ask. Give yourself an exit date and keep applying for paid roles. For the full checklist, see how to spot remote job scams in Nigeria.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a remote HR job in Nigeria with no experience?
Yes, but it's hard, and most remote HR roles ask for at least some admin or customer-facing experience. Your best openings are HR assistant roles at Nigerian companies, recruitment agency coordinator roles and HR virtual assistant work for small firms. Volunteering to run onboarding or records for a local organisation for three months gives you experience you can put on your CV.
What is the difference between an HR assistant and an HR coordinator?
An HR assistant completes assigned tasks such as filing, data entry and drafting letters. An HR coordinator owns whole processes such as onboarding or review cycles and works with less supervision. Coordinator ads usually ask for one to two years of experience, so beginners should target assistant roles first.
Do I need a degree to work in remote HR?
Not always, although many employers ask for one. Nigerian employers often list a degree or HND, and the CIPM examination route requires one. Some international HR assistant and recruiting coordinator ads focus on skills and English level instead.
Is CIPM or aPHR better for a beginner in Nigeria?
CIPM is usually the better first choice if you want HR jobs with Nigerian or African employers, and you pay in naira in stages. The aPHR costs $400 in total and needs no HR experience. It's more useful if you're targeting employers that care about US-style HR knowledge.
Can I work as a remote HR assistant for a US company from Nigeria?
Sometimes, but many US HR assistant roles require US residence because the work involves US payroll, benefits and employment law. Look for ads that say "worldwide", "Africa" or "EMEA", or for contractor roles focused on recruiting coordination and scheduling. Those tasks depend less on local law.
What tools should a remote HR assistant know?
Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, an HRIS such as BambooHR, HiBob or Rippling, and an ATS such as Greenhouse, Lever or Workable. Add Slack or Microsoft Teams and a scheduling tool such as Calendly. You don't need all of them. One HRIS and one ATS, plus strong spreadsheet skills, is enough to start.
How much does an entry-level remote HR job pay?
It depends heavily on the employer's country and on your contract type (employee or contractor), and there's no reliable published figure for Nigeria-based remote HR assistants. As a benchmark, US-based HR assistants had a median of $47,710 a year in May 2023 (BLS). Remote offers to Nigeria-based workers are usually well below that.
Key takeaways
- Entry-level remote HR jobs mostly appear as HR assistant, HR coordinator, recruiting coordinator and people operations associate roles.
- Many international HR roles are restricted to the employer's country because HR depends on local employment law. Ads open to Nigeria, Africa or EMEA are your real market.
- Employers hire beginners for accuracy, discretion and clear written English. Spreadsheet skills and one HRIS or ATS help you get noticed.
- CIPM suits Nigerian employers. The aPHR ($400, no experience needed) suits international ones. Neither replaces practical work.
- Admin, customer service and volunteer work count as experience if you describe them in HR terms.
- Never pay to get an HR job, and think carefully before accepting a long unpaid internship.
