You can get a remote HR job without a degree. These jobs sit mostly at the operational end of HR: recruiting coordinator, talent sourcer, HR or people operations assistant, onboarding coordinator and HR virtual assistant. Senior HR roles still tend to ask for a degree. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry route for HR specialists, so you should expect some doors to stay closed until you have a track record.

The good news is that recruiting and HR operations are judged mostly on output: interviews scheduled, candidates sourced, offer letters sent without errors. Those can be proven without a certificate from a university. For a Nigeria-based applicant, the bigger barrier is usually the location line in the job ad, not the education line.

This guide covers the HR roles that hire on skills, how to read degree wording in job ads, which HR certifications you can sit without a degree, realistic pay benchmarks, and a step-by-step plan.

Quick answer

The remote HR jobs that most often hire without a degree are recruiting coordinator, talent sourcer, agency recruiter, HR or people operations assistant, onboarding coordinator and HR virtual assistant. Employers hiring for these roles care most about applicant tracking system (ATS) skills, organisation and clear writing. You can sit the SHRM-CP certification without a degree. Before applying, check that the ad accepts applicants living in Nigeria.

Hiring managers are more relaxed about degrees in roles where the work is measurable and the legal risk sits with someone else. A coordinator who books 40 interviews a week without double-booking anyone is easy to judge. An HR business partner advising on a dismissal under Californian or German law is not, so those employers lean on degrees and years of experience.

Recruiting coordinator

This is the most common way into HR without a degree. You keep the hiring process moving: you book interviews across time zones, send rejection and next-stage emails, update candidate records in tools like Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby or Workable, and prepare interview packs. Employers usually want proof that you are organised and write well. Many ads also ask for some previous coordination experience, which can come from admin, customer support or events work. Our planned guide to recruitment coordinator jobs for beginners covers the role in more depth.

Talent sourcer

Sourcers find people who aren't applying. You build Boolean searches on LinkedIn, GitHub or niche job boards, write outreach messages and hand warm candidates to recruiters. A sourcer who can show a spreadsheet of 50 well-matched profiles for a real job description has stronger evidence than a transcript. See how to get a remote talent sourcer job.

Agency recruiter

Staffing and recruitment agencies, including ones that fill roles for US and UK clients, often hire on results and attitude. The work is closer to sales than to classic HR: you're paid for filling roles, and some offers lean heavily on commission. Read the base pay terms before you accept. Our recruiter career guide explains the skills and tools.

HR or people operations assistant

You maintain employee records, prepare contract templates, update the HR information system (HRIS) such as BambooHR, HiBob or Personio, and answer routine staff questions. Small and mid-sized companies are the most open to non-graduates here. The people operations career guide shows how the role grows.

Onboarding coordinator

You make sure a new hire signs the right documents, gets a laptop and accounts, and has a first-week schedule. Remote-first companies hire for this because onboarding someone you never meet in person takes careful process work.

HR virtual assistant

Freelance HR support for small business owners abroad: posting jobs, screening CVs, scheduling interviews, keeping leave trackers. Clients rarely ask about degrees, but they do ask for samples and references. This is the most accessible option and also the least secure, since it is usually contract work.

How strict are degree requirements in HR?

HR is a field where degrees still count, so be clear-eyed about it. The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook for HR specialists lists a bachelor's degree, usually in HR, business or communications, as the typical entry-level education. It also notes that some people get the experience by working first as HR assistants or customer service representatives. That second route is the one a non-graduate takes.

Even HR assistant roles are not degree-free on paper in the US. The BLS page covering information clerks says HR assistants generally need an associate's degree (a two-year US qualification, roughly comparable in level to an OND). Many remote employers outside traditional corporate HR are more flexible than that benchmark, especially start-ups and agencies.

The wording in the ad tells you how much flexibility exists:

Ad wordingWhat it usually meansShould you apply?
"Bachelor's degree required"A hard filter, sometimes automatedOnly with very strong matching experience
"Degree preferred"Nice to haveYes, if you meet the other criteria
"Degree or equivalent experience"Experience can replace itYes, and show the experience clearly
No mention of educationSkills-based hiringYes

"Equivalent experience" is not a fixed formula. In practice, hiring managers want to see that you have already done the core tasks in the ad somewhere, paid or unpaid, and can describe the results.

What replaces a degree in an HR application

A degree tells an employer you can learn, follow rules and finish things. Without one, you have to show the same things more directly.

  • Tool evidence. Name the ATS and HRIS tools you have used, and how. "Moved 120 candidates through stages in Workable for a 15-person agency" beats "familiar with ATS". Many vendors offer free trials or demo accounts you can practise on.
  • Process samples. A one-page interview scheduling workflow, an onboarding checklist, a rewritten job description or a candidate email template set. Put them in a shared Google Drive folder and link it from your CV.
  • Numbers from adjacent work. Customer support, admin, school administration, church or NYSC CDS coordination, and event planning all produce numbers: tickets closed, people registered, rotas managed.
  • A relevant certificate. It won't replace experience, but it answers the "does this person know HR basics?" question.
  • Written English. Coordinators and sourcers write all day. Your cover note is your first writing sample, so keep it short and error-free.

HR certifications you can sit without a degree

SHRM-CP (Society for Human Resource Management). SHRM's eligibility criteria page says, as of October 2026, that SHRM-CP applicants do not need a degree, previous HR experience or an HR job title, though basic HR knowledge is recommended. The senior SHRM-SCP also needs no degree, but it does require at least three years of strategic-level HR work (at least 1,000 hours in each calendar year counted). SHRM-CP is built around US HR practice, which helps if you're targeting US employers. The page doesn't list exam fees, so check SHRM's store for the current price before budgeting.

CIPM (Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria). CIPM runs staged professional exams. Its exams FAQ (checked October 2026) shows that the Foundation stage is the start for undergraduates and science graduates, and that HND or bachelor's holders in HR start further up at Intermediate II. It lists the Foundation fee for one paper as ₦12,475. The page does not set out the entry rules for O'level, OND or NCE holders. Email exams@cipmnigeria.org to confirm your starting stage before you register. CIPM is most valuable if you also want Nigerian HR roles. Foreign employers will mostly not know it, so explain it in one line on your CV.

CIPD (UK Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development). The CIPD Level 3 Foundation Certificate in People Practice is a common UK starting qualification for HR, offered through approved study centres, many of them online. Entry requirements and fees are set by each centre, so compare a few. It's most useful if you're targeting UK employers.

Our planned guide to the best HR certifications for remote jobs compares these in more detail.

The bigger barrier for Nigerians: location, not education

Most remote HR ads that look perfect turn out to be limited to one country. You can see this on any company's job board. One Greenhouse board we checked in October 2026, a US staffing firm's, had HR, recruiting and people ops roles tagged "Santa Clara, CA", "Florida, US (Remote)" and "Remote" with no country stated. A Nigeria-based applicant could take none of them at face value.

HR is more location-sensitive than many fields for one reason: employment law. A generalist handling payroll queries, leave or disciplinary cases has to know the law where the employees are. That is why employee relations and HR compliance roles are often tied to a country, while recruiting coordination and sourcing travel better across borders.

Look for these location signals:

  • "Remote, worldwide" or "anywhere": usually open, but confirm in the application form's country list.
  • "Remote, EMEA" (Europe, Middle East and Africa): Nigeria is in the region, but some employers mean only the countries where they have a legal entity. Our planned explainer on what EMEA means in a job ad goes through this.
  • "Remote, US" or "must be authorised to work in the US": not open to you from Nigeria.
  • A named Nigerian city or "Africa": open, but check whether pay is set locally.

Before you spend an hour on an application, follow the checks in how to verify whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents.

What remote HR jobs without a degree pay

There is no reliable published pay data for Nigeria-based remote HR workers, so treat any confident figure you see online with care. The benchmarks below are US pay for people living in the US. They show the ceiling, not what you'll be offered from Lagos or Kano.

Role (US benchmark)Median pay, May 2025Source
HR assistant$50,610 a yearBLS information clerks page
HR specialist (includes recruiters)$75,940 a yearBLS HR specialists page

Companies hiring from Nigeria usually pay below US local rates, often through contractor agreements or local pay bands. What moves your pay up: the employer's country, whether the role is full-time employment or freelance, the time zone you cover, your ATS experience and whether you recruit for hard-to-fill roles such as engineering.

Example (hypothetical): a European start-up offers a Nigeria-based recruiting coordinator $1,200 a month on a contractor agreement. At the WorkRemote house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), that is about ₦1,634,000 a month before tax and withdrawal fees. This figure only illustrates the conversion. It is not a market average.

For role-specific figures, see our recruiter salary guide, the HR generalist salary page and the people operations specialist pay guide.

A 90-day plan to get a remote HR job without a degree

This plan assumes you have basic computer skills and some admin, support or coordination experience, even informal. If you have none at all, start with our planned guide to entry-level remote HR jobs for beginners.

  1. Weeks 1 to 2: pick one target role. Choose recruiting coordinator or talent sourcer; they're the clearest non-degree entry points. Read 20 real ads for that role and list the tools and tasks that keep coming up.
  2. Weeks 2 to 4: learn the tools. Sign up for free trials of one ATS (Workable and Greenhouse both offer demos) and practise moving a fake candidate through every stage. Learn Google Calendar or Outlook scheduling across time zones, and LinkedIn Boolean search.
  3. Weeks 4 to 6: build three samples. For example: a sourced shortlist of 25 profiles for a real public job ad (names hidden), an interview scheduling workflow, and a set of five candidate emails (invite, reschedule, rejection, offer follow-up, no-show).
  4. Weeks 5 to 8: start a credential. Register for SHRM-CP preparation if you're targeting US firms, or check your CIPM starting stage if you want both Nigerian and remote options. You don't need to finish before applying; "in progress" is fine on a CV.
  5. Weeks 6 to 8: rewrite your CV. Lead with HR-adjacent results and tools. Put education at the bottom. Don't apologise for not having a degree; simply don't make it the headline.
  6. Weeks 8 to 12: apply and reach out. Aim for a steady weekly number of well-matched applications to ads that accept Nigeria. Message recruiters at agencies directly; they hire coordinators often and know the job well. Prepare with our recruiter interview questions.
  7. Ongoing: take small freelance HR work. Short gigs screening CVs or scheduling interviews for small businesses give you references and real numbers for your next application.

Nigeria-specific setup: hours, power, pay and contracts

Time zones. Coordinators live in calendars. Lagos is on WAT (UTC+1) all year. From 1 November 2026, US Eastern time is 6 hours behind Lagos, so a 2pm New York interview is 8pm for you. London is on GMT until late March, an hour behind Lagos. Agree your core hours in writing before you start, and always send invites in the candidate's local time.

Power and internet. A recruiting coordinator who drops off a candidate call because NEPA took light makes the company look bad to someone it is trying to hire. Have an inverter or solar backup and two internet options, such as a MiFi plus a phone hotspot on a different network.

Getting paid. Most foreign employers pay Nigeria-based HR staff in dollars through a contractor platform or an employer of record. Our guide to receiving dollar payments in Nigeria compares the apps and fees. Before signing, read the difference between contractor and EOR employee arrangements, because it affects your leave, notice and tax. For tax, see tax for remote workers in Nigeria.

Candidate data. You will handle CVs, ID documents and salary details. Work only inside the employer's systems, never download candidate files to personal drives, and expect European employers to follow GDPR rules for European candidates.

Scams aimed at people looking for HR jobs

Fake "HR assistant" and "recruiting assistant" ads are common because they sound respectable and need no technical skills. Watch for:

  • A "training fee", "certification fee" or "equipment deposit" before you start. Real employers don't charge you to work.
  • "HR" duties that turn out to be receiving money and forwarding it, or buying gift cards for "staff".
  • An interview held only by Telegram or WhatsApp text, with an offer the same day.
  • Requests for your BVN, bank login or passport before there's a signed contract you've checked.

Frequently asked questions

Can I work in HR remotely without a degree in Nigeria?

Yes, mainly in recruiting coordination, sourcing, agency recruiting, HR admin and HR virtual assistant work. Generalist and HR business partner roles with foreign employers usually ask for a degree or several years of experience, so most people without degrees move up after proving themselves in an operational role.

Does SHRM-CP require a degree?

No. SHRM's eligibility page, as of October 2026, says SHRM-CP applicants need no degree, HR experience or HR job title, though basic HR knowledge is recommended. The senior SHRM-SCP also needs no degree but requires at least three years of strategic HR work.

Can I write CIPM exams with only WAEC or NECO?

Possibly, but confirm it with CIPM first. CIPM's exams FAQ lists starting stages for undergraduates, HND holders and graduates, but does not set out the rules for O'level, OND or NCE holders, so email exams@cipmnigeria.org before registering.

What does "degree or equivalent experience" mean in a remote HR job ad?

It means the employer will accept proven work experience in place of a degree. Show that you have already done the main tasks in the ad, such as scheduling interviews or managing candidate records, and describe the results in numbers.

Which HR job is easiest to get remotely without a degree?

Recruiting coordinator is usually the most accessible full-time role, and HR virtual assistant work is the easiest freelance route. Both reward organisation and clear writing over formal qualifications. The coordinator route tends to lead to recruiter or people operations roles.

Do remote HR jobs without a degree pay in dollars?

Many do when the employer is abroad, usually through a contractor platform or employer of record. Pay for Nigeria-based workers is normally below the US medians published by the BLS ($50,610 a year for HR assistants, May 2025), so use those figures as a ceiling, not an expected offer.

Is a degree from another field enough for remote HR jobs?

Often, yes. Many HR ads accept a degree in any subject or in business or communications, and the BLS lists those fields alongside HR. In Nigeria, CIPM also lets graduates of non-HR disciplines start at a higher exam stage than Foundation.

Key takeaways

  • Remote HR jobs without a degree are mostly operational roles: recruiting coordinator, talent sourcer, agency recruiter, HR or people ops assistant, onboarding coordinator and HR virtual assistant.
  • The US typically expects a bachelor's degree for HR specialists, so senior HR roles abroad remain harder to get without one.
  • Tool skills (ATS and HRIS), process samples and numbers from admin or support work are the best substitutes for a degree.
  • SHRM-CP needs no degree, and CIPM has staged exams; confirm your CIPM starting level directly with the institute.
  • For Nigeria-based applicants, location restrictions and employment-law knowledge block more HR applications than education does, so check eligibility before applying.
