How to Find Remote Executive Recruiter Jobs
Where to find remote executive recruiter jobs from Nigeria: titles to search, location rules, how executive search pay works, and how to build experience.

You find remote executive recruiter jobs in a few ways. Search for the titles search firms really use (researcher, resourcer, search associate), check the location tag on every ad, and go straight to executive search firms and in-house leadership-hiring teams rather than relying on general job boards. For a recruiter based in Nigeria, the realistic entry point is usually a remote research or resourcer role, or a freelance associate contract. Full consultant jobs tend to go to people who already have senior contacts.
Executive recruiters fill director, VP and C-suite roles, often through confidential, retained searches. The work suits remote delivery because it runs on research, LinkedIn, video calls and a database. The hard part is eligibility, because many "remote" ads only accept people living in the US, the UK or, as we found in October 2026, South Africa.
This guide covers what the job involves, which titles to search, where to look, how pay works and how to build the track record search firms ask for.
Quick answer
Remote executive recruiter jobs are available to Nigerians, but most are research, resourcer or associate roles rather than partner-level jobs. Look for "executive search researcher", "resourcer" and "search associate" on firm careers pages, LinkedIn and job boards. Open each ad and confirm it accepts applicants living in Nigeria, because many remote search roles are limited to one country. Before you apply, build a record of senior placements or market maps.
What an executive recruiter actually does
An executive recruiter (also called a headhunter or executive search consultant) finds and persuades senior leaders to move into a client's leadership role. Most good candidates are not job hunting. The work is mainly research, approaching people directly and managing a confidential process, not screening applications.
Retained search versus contingency recruitment
Retained search means the client pays a search firm to run a dedicated search, usually in stages, whether or not a hire is made. Most executive search works this way.
Contingency recruitment means the recruiter is paid only when a candidate they introduced gets hired. It is common for mid-level roles, and it is how most freelance and commission-based recruiter work in Nigeria is set up.
The difference affects you directly. A retained firm needs researchers and associates on a salary to run each search properly. A contingency setup tends to push risk onto the recruiter through commission.
The stages of an executive search
A typical retained search follows this order:
- Agree the brief with the client (the "mandate"): role, reporting line, pay, must-haves.
- Map the market: list the target companies and the people in comparable roles.
- Build a longlist and approach candidates confidentially.
- Assess the candidates through interviews and referencing, then present a shortlist.
- Support client interviews, the offer, negotiation and onboarding.
Remote juniors usually own stages 2 and 3. That is why "research" and "resourcing" titles are the best way into the field.
The career ladder in executive search
| Title | What you do | Experience usually asked |
|---|---|---|
| Researcher / resourcer | Market maps, longlists, first approaches | 0 to 3 years in recruitment or research |
| Search associate | Runs searches day to day, interviews candidates | 3 to 6 years |
| Consultant / principal | Owns client relationships and delivery | Several years of executive placements |
| Partner | Wins mandates, leads the practice | Senior network plus business development record |
The experience bands come from the ads described below and are typical, not fixed. Each firm sets its own.
Which remote executive search jobs Nigerians can realistically get
The honest answer: remote executive search jobs open to Nigeria exist but are scarce, and the most common Africa-based remote openings we found were tied to one country. Here is what showed up when we checked in October 2026.
- A "Resourcer" ad on DailyRemote for an unnamed HR services firm (51 to 200 staff) asked the hire to find, approach and qualify candidates for retained search assignments across technical and executive sectors, and to keep records in Loxo. It asked for 0 to 2 years of experience, but the location tag was South Africa only (DailyRemote listing, checked 27 October 2026).
- A partner and associate partner search role on Mindbench was posted on 18 February 2025 for a remote-first firm. It named Kenya, Nigeria, Egypt, South Africa and Mauritius as target locations and advertised $100k to $200k in salary plus a $100k to $200k bonus. The page now shows the job as expired, and it was for people with deep business networks and experience winning mandates.
- Open Access Consulting advertised for freelance/associate recruiters on 27 July 2026: remote, covering Nigeria and Africa, project-based, with "performance based compensation" and at least 3 years of recruitment experience. The deadline (17 August 2026) has passed, and this was general recruitment, not executive search specifically.
Three patterns stand out. Junior search research is being sent to African talent, but often to one country. Africa-focused search firms do want people based in Nigeria for senior roles. And Nigerian freelance recruiter work is usually paid on results, so read the terms closely.
| Type of opening | Who it suits | Access from Nigeria |
|---|---|---|
| Remote researcher / resourcer | Recruiters, analysts, strong graduates | Possible, but check country tags |
| Freelance associate recruiter | Recruiters with 3+ years | Common, usually results-based pay |
| In-house executive recruiter | Experienced recruiters | Rare; often US or UK only |
| Africa-practice partner | Senior HR leaders, consultants | Real, but needs a senior network |
Job titles and search strings that turn up real openings
Searching only "executive recruiter" mostly returns US jobs, many of them hybrid. Search firms describe their remote junior roles with other titles, so use these:
- Executive search researcher
- Research associate (executive search)
- Resourcer or talent resourcer
- Search associate or associate consultant
- Talent mapping specialist or market mapping researcher
- Executive talent partner or leadership recruiter (these are in-house titles)
- Freelance or associate executive recruiter
Pair each title with a location word. On Google, try strings such as:
"executive search" researcher remote EMEA"resourcer" "retained search" remote Africasite:apply.workable.com "executive search" remotesite:job-boards.greenhouse.io "executive recruiter" remotesite:jobs.lever.co "talent partner" executive remote
Workable, Greenhouse and Lever are applicant tracking systems that many firms use. Searching their domains brings up ads on the firm's own site, which are more reliable than reposts. Expect a lot of expired links: during our research, several search-firm ads returned "not found" errors within weeks of being posted.
Where to look for remote executive recruiter jobs
Executive search firms' own careers pages
Most search firms hire researchers quietly through their own sites and LinkedIn. Make a list of firms that handle mandates in your sector (banking, energy, fintech, telecoms, consumer goods) and check their careers pages every week. Africa-focused boutiques and firms with an African practice are your best bet, because they need people who know Nigerian talent markets.
AESC, the Association of Executive Search and Leadership Consultants, describes itself as a global network of search and leadership consulting firms. Firms that mention AESC membership in their marketing are a useful set of names to research.
In-house executive recruiting teams
Large companies and fast-growing scale-ups hire their own "executive recruiters" or "leadership talent partners". Those roles are usually tied to the company's main hiring countries. Treat them as stretch applications unless the ad says EMEA, Africa or worldwide.
On LinkedIn, follow search firms and their researchers, set job alerts for the titles above, and post useful market observations about your sector. Partners often hire researchers they've already seen working: someone who sent them a sharp candidate, or who posts clear analysis of a talent market.
Job boards that show location rules
General remote boards and Nigerian boards both carry recruiter work. On WorkRemote, the admin and HR listings show the company, its website and where applicants may live, which saves you from opening ads that exclude Nigeria.
How to read location rules on executive search ads
Most rejected applications fail on eligibility. Executive search firms are strict here because of contracts, tax and client confidentiality.
| Ad wording | What it usually means for you |
|---|---|
| "South Africa (Remote)" or "UK (Remote)" | Only residents of that country |
| "Remote, EMEA" | Often open to Nigeria, but confirm with the recruiter |
| "Remote, UK hours" | Location might be flexible; working hours are not |
| "Worldwide" or "Anywhere" | Usually contractor terms; check payment method |
For the detail, see our guides to what EMEA means in a job ad, what "worldwide remote" means from Nigeria and how to check whether a job accepts Nigerian residents.
Time zones matter in this work because candidate calls happen in the candidate's working day. Lagos runs on WAT (UTC+1) all year. As of October 2026, London is on GMT, so a UK 9am to 5pm day is 10am to 6pm in Lagos. US Eastern switches to EST on 1 November 2026, which puts 9am in New York at 3pm in Lagos. If you support a US search, you'll have evening calls.
How executive recruiters are paid
Pay in executive search depends on the level and the contract type, and pay for a Nigeria-based hire is usually below what the same firm pays someone in the US or UK.
Benchmarks, not offers
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics groups recruiters under human resources specialists, with a median annual wage of $75,940 in May 2025. That figure covers all recruiters and HR specialists in the US, not executive search specifically. It's a ceiling to keep in mind, not an offer you should expect from Lagos.
The expired Mindbench ad above shows what partner-level Africa search jobs can advertise ($100k to $200k salary plus a similar bonus range). That money was for people who win and lead searches. It is not a researcher's rate.
The main pay structures
- Salaried researcher or associate: a monthly salary, sometimes with a team bonus. This is the most stable option.
- Base plus commission: usual for consultants, who earn a share of fees on the searches they win or deliver.
- Freelance associate: paid per placement or per completed search stage. This works if the firm has real mandates, and it's risky if it doesn't.
- Commission-only: no pay unless a candidate is hired. See our guide to commission-based recruiting jobs before agreeing to this.
For pay across recruiter roles, see the remote recruiter salary guide and recruiter jobs that pay in dollars.
Contractor or employee
Most foreign search firms take on Nigeria-based people as independent contractors, and some use an employer of record (EOR). The difference affects leave, notice and tax. Our explainer on contractor versus EOR employee covers it, and how to receive dollar payments in Nigeria compares the payment apps. Your income is taxable in Nigeria either way: see tax for remote workers in Nigeria.
Building the experience executive search firms want
Search firms rarely hire on potential alone. They want proof that you can find senior people and get them to reply.
Come in from recruitment or research
The common routes into executive search are:
- Agency or in-house recruiting, especially for senior or specialist roles. Our remote recruiter career guide covers the skills and tools.
- Sourcing, where you already build longlists. See how to get a remote talent sourcer job.
- Technical recruiting, which leads to CTO and engineering leadership searches. See becoming a remote technical recruiter.
- Research, consulting or investment analysis, where market mapping is already part of the job.
Pick a sector and know it well
Executive search is organised by sector. If you've spent years in Nigerian banking, oil and gas, telecoms or fintech, you already know who the senior people are, where they move and what they earn. A London or Johannesburg firm running a Lagos CFO search will value that more than a general HR CV.
Credentials that help
- AESC Certificate in Executive Research: about 15 hours in total, covering a self-paced foundation course (5 to 8 hours), a live online forum (2 hours a day over 3 days) and a roughly 30-minute assessment. There are no prerequisites. The base price is not published on the AESC certificate page, and one exam resit costs $150 (as of October 2026). Ask AESC for the current fee.
- CIPM and CIPD: The Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM) and the UK's CIPD signed a mutual recognition agreement on 17 September 2024. Associate and Full CIPM members can apply for the matching CIPD grade through a 60-minute online professional discussion for £120, plus CIPD joining and membership fees (as of October 2026). A CIPD grade is easy for UK firms to recognise.
Show your work without breaking confidentiality
You can't share client names, but you can show method. Build a sample market map for a public type of role, such as "heads of risk at Nigerian tier-one banks", using only public information, and present your approach, sources and how you would sort the list. Write up how you handled one difficult senior search, leaving out names. Our recruiter interview questions will help you practise talking about your process.
A step-by-step plan to land your first remote executive search role
- Choose one or two sectors where you know the senior market.
- Rewrite your CV around senior hiring: levels filled, time to shortlist, response rates on approaches, number of candidates mapped.
- Make one anonymised market map as a sample of your work.
- Build a list of 30 to 50 search firms and in-house teams that hire in your sectors, with links to their careers pages.
- Set alerts for the researcher, resourcer and associate titles listed above, with "EMEA", "Africa" or "remote" added.
- Every week, open new ads, check the location rule, and apply only where Nigeria fits.
- Send short direct messages to search partners whose practice matches your sector.
- Track every application and conversation in one spreadsheet so you can follow up.
Example (hypothetical): a LinkedIn message to a search partner.
"Hello Ms Adeyemi, I'm a Lagos-based recruiter who has spent four years filling senior finance roles in Nigerian banking. I noticed your firm runs CFO searches in West Africa. I've built an anonymised map of risk and finance leaders at Nigerian tier-one banks and would be glad to share my method. If you take on remote researchers or associates for African mandates, I'd value 15 minutes. I'm on WAT, so UK hours are easy for me."
The message is specific about the sector, offers proof, and answers the time-zone question before it's asked.
Working remotely in executive search from Nigeria
Executive search involves confidential conversations with senior people, so your setup has to be more dependable than for most remote jobs.
- Power and internet: a dropped call with a CEO candidate does more damage than a dropped call with a colleague. Keep inverter or solar backup and two internet routes, for example a main provider plus a MiFi or phone hotspot.
- Privacy: take calls in a quiet room where nobody can overhear. Candidate names and salaries are sensitive personal data, so lock your laptop and use the firm's systems, not personal spreadsheets.
- Tools: expect LinkedIn Recruiter and a search database such as Loxo (named in the resourcer ad above). Get comfortable with Boolean search before your interviews.
- Hours: with UK clients, you work close to your normal day. With US searches, expect late-afternoon and evening calls.
Red flags in "freelance executive recruiter" offers
Executive search attracts schemes because "headhunter" sounds well paid and the work is home-based. Walk away if you see:
- A fee to "join the network", buy training or get database access before any work.
- Commission-only terms from a firm that can't name a single live mandate or client sector.
- Requests for your BVN, NIN or bank login before a contract exists.
- Ads with no company name, no website and only a WhatsApp number.
Real firms pay you; you do not pay them. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria explains how to check a firm.
Frequently asked questions
Can I become an executive recruiter without recruitment experience?
Yes, but usually through a research or resourcer role first, not as a consultant. Graduates or analysts who can map markets and write clearly sometimes get junior research roles. One remote resourcer ad we found in October 2026 asked for 0 to 2 years of experience.
What is the difference between an executive recruiter and a regular recruiter?
An executive recruiter fills senior leadership roles, mostly by approaching people who are not job hunting, often under a retained contract. A regular recruiter fills a wider range of roles and relies more on applications and contingency fees. The executive version needs deeper research, more discretion and stronger senior relationships.
Do executive search firms hire remote workers from Nigeria?
Some do, especially firms with African practices, but many remote search roles are restricted to one country. During our October 2026 research, several remote search research roles were open only to South Africa residents. Always check the ad's location line before applying.
How much does a remote executive recruiter earn?
It depends on level, contract and location, and offers to Nigeria-based people are usually below US pay. The US benchmark for all recruiters and HR specialists was a median of $75,940 a year in May 2025 (BLS). Partner-level Africa search jobs have advertised far more, while researcher pay sits well below the consultant level.
Is commission-only executive recruiting worth it?
Only if the firm has real, signed mandates and pays on agreed terms. Commission-only work can leave you unpaid for months if searches stall or clients hire through other routes. A base salary, or a fee per search stage, is safer when you're starting.
Which certificate helps for executive search jobs?
The AESC Certificate in Executive Research is the one built specifically for search research, and it takes about 15 hours. For general HR credibility, CIPM membership with the CIPD mutual recognition route is useful for UK-facing firms. Neither replaces a record of senior placements.
What tools do remote executive recruiters use?
LinkedIn Recruiter, a candidate database or applicant tracking system such as Loxo, Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, and video calls. Strong Boolean search and a well-organised market map matter more than any single tool.
Key takeaways
- Remote executive search roles exist for people in Nigeria, but research, resourcer and associate jobs are much easier to get than consultant or partner roles.
- Search the titles firms actually use, and use ATS site searches to find original ads.
- Check every ad's location rule: "remote" often means one country only.
- Executive search pays differently from regular recruiting (retained fees, base plus commission, per-search freelance terms), and offers from Nigeria sit below US benchmarks.
- Sector knowledge, an anonymised market map and a credential such as the AESC certificate make your application credible.
