Recruitment is the easiest way into a remote HR career from Nigeria. Sourcing, screening and coordinating interviews work the same way whether the candidate is in Lagos, Leeds or Lisbon. General HR roles are harder to get from abroad because they depend on the employment law of the country where staff work. A Nigeria-based HR professional is most hireable for Nigerian and African teams, and for functions that don't depend on a single country's law.

This guide covers both tracks: talent acquisition (finding and hiring people) and HR or people operations (looking after them once hired). You'll see which roles are realistic from Nigeria and what employers ask for in live ads. It also covers how CIPM, CIPD and SHRM fit together, what pay benchmarks mean for you, and a staged plan for moving from a local HR job to a remote one with a foreign company.

Quick answer

Nigerians can build remote HR and recruitment careers. The most accessible routes are recruiting coordinator, talent sourcer and recruiter roles, plus HR or people operations roles that cover Nigeria or Africa. Roles that advise on UK, US or EU employment law usually require living in that country. Employers ask for applicant tracking system (ATS) skills, clear writing, reliable internet and proof of results. CIPM membership helps locally, and CIPD or SHRM help abroad.

The two tracks: talent acquisition and people operations

HR work splits into two broad tracks, and remote hiring treats them differently.

Talent acquisition (TA) is the work of finding, assessing and hiring people. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics describes recruiters and talent acquisition specialists as people who find, screen and interview applicants, contact references and make job offers. Most of that happens on LinkedIn, in an ATS and on video calls, so it is naturally remote.

People operations (HR) covers everything after the hire: onboarding, contracts, payroll inputs, leave, performance reviews, employee relations, policies and compliance. Much of it can be done remotely. The catch is that contracts, dismissals and benefits follow the law of the country where the employee works.

Why recruitment travels better than general HR

Recruitment skills are largely the same in every market. Writing a job ad, running a structured interview, keeping candidates warm and closing an offer work the same way everywhere. An employment-law question doesn't travel like that. A UK manager who wants to know whether they can dismiss someone needs an answer based on UK law, and companies usually want that from someone who lives and works in the UK.

That's why one company can hire across Africa and still not hire its recruiter there. Caliza, a fintech, advertised a full-time "Recruiter, People Operations" role on Lever. The ad says the company is hiring "in the US, Latin America, Europe, Africa and Asia". The recruiter role itself is listed as "Remote, United States or Latin America". It asks for availability to overlap with US Eastern and Brazil time zones, and it states there is no visa sponsorship (checked October 2026). A Nigeria-based applicant isn't eligible, even though the company hires Africans for other teams.

The lesson: the location line on the ad decides, not the company's reputation for global hiring. Our explainer on why some remote jobs are not open to Nigerians covers this in more detail.

Remote recruiter roles open to Nigeria do exist. As of October 2026, Moniepoint's Greenhouse board listed an Early Careers Talent Acquisition Specialist as "Remote, Lagos, Nigeria". The same Moniepoint job board showed a Talent Acquisition Specialist role with remote locations including Lagos. The early-careers ad asks for 5 to 7 years of TA experience, hands-on ATS use and knowledge of Nigerian universities. No salary is shown. Ads close, so always check the live listing before you apply.

Who hires Nigeria-based HR and recruitment people

Three types of employer make up most of the realistic openings. They differ in pay currency, contract type and what they expect from you.

Nigerian and pan-African companies with remote teams

Fintechs, tech companies and fast-growing businesses headquartered in Nigeria or elsewhere in Africa often hire HR and TA staff who work remotely within the country. Your Nigerian experience counts in full here: CIPM membership, knowledge of the Labour Act, and contacts at universities and in local talent communities. Pay is often in naira, so read the offer carefully.

Foreign companies that need Nigeria or Africa coverage

Some global companies employ people in Nigeria directly, through a local entity or an employer of record (EOR). An EOR is a firm that legally employs staff in a country on another company's behalf. These companies sometimes need someone who understands Nigerian payroll, statutory deductions and local hiring practice. Ads for these roles often say "EMEA" or name African countries. Our guides on what EMEA means in a job ad and how employer-of-record services hire in Nigeria explain the terms.

Recruitment agencies and freelance sourcing clients

Staffing agencies, recruitment process outsourcing (RPO) firms and individual founders hire sourcers and recruiters as contractors. You might source software engineers for a European agency or fill customer support roles for a US startup. This is often the first foreign income for Nigerian recruiters. It is also where pay varies most, and where commission-only arrangements are common. If an offer is mostly commission, read remote recruiting jobs with commission first.

Whether you join as an employee or a contractor changes your tax, leave and job security. Our guide on contractor versus EOR employee status in Nigeria explains the difference.

Skills and tools remote HR employers ask for

Ads for remote HR and TA roles ask for a fairly consistent set of things. The Moniepoint and Caliza ads above both ask for hands-on ATS experience and the ability to manage many roles or stakeholders at once. Caliza lists Lever as preferred and expects you to handle 10 or more open roles at once.

  • Applicant tracking systems: Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Workable or Workday Recruiting. Learn one well and the rest follow.
  • Sourcing: LinkedIn search and Boolean strings (search queries that combine keywords with AND, OR and NOT), GitHub for tech roles, and personalised outreach that gets replies. See how to source candidates for international roles.
  • HRIS: BambooHR, Rippling, HiBob, Workday or Personio for people operations roles.
  • Spreadsheets and reporting: time to hire, pass-through rates (the share of candidates who move to the next stage), offer acceptance rate and source of hire. The early-careers ad asks for funnel analytics and conversion tracking.
  • Written communication: remote HR runs on email, Slack and documentation. Your interview notes and policy drafts are your work samples.
  • Data handling: you'll hold CVs, ID documents and salary details. Know the basics of data protection rules in the countries you recruit for.

Certifications: CIPM, CIPD and SHRM

No certificate is required for most recruiter roles abroad. A good track record matters more. For general HR, certification carries more weight, and Nigerians have three relevant bodies.

BodyWhere it counts mostKey facts (as of October 2026)
CIPM (Nigeria)Nigerian employers and HR roles covering NigeriaAssociate and Full Member grades; CIPM also references an HR Practitioners' Licence
CIPD (UK)UK, Europe, Commonwealth employersMutual recognition route for CIPM members
SHRM (US)US companies and global firmsSHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP exams at Prometric centres

CIPM is the professional body Nigerian employers look for. Its membership pages describe Associate and Full Member grades and an accelerated upgrade pathway for Associates. They also mention a valid HR Practitioners' Licence among the upgrade requirements.

CIPD and CIPM signed a mutual recognition agreement on 17 September 2024. A CIPM Associate can seek CIPD Associate membership, and a CIPM Full Member can seek CIPD Chartered Membership. You get there through a 60-minute professional discussion on Microsoft Teams. It costs £120 for Associate and Full Members (£250 for Fellows), plus CIPD joining and membership fees. For a Nigerian HR professional targeting UK or European employers, this is often cheaper and faster than starting CIPD from scratch.

SHRM-CP is the US-recognised credential. For the testing window running 1 December 2026 to 15 February 2027, SHRM's exam fee page lists the standard rate as $399 for members and $499 for non-members. At ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN, 23 October 2026), that is roughly ₦543,000 and ₦680,000. Standard applications close on 24 December 2026. The page says the exam must be taken in person at an authorised Prometric testing centre, so check centre availability in Nigeria before you pay.

How to build a career in remote talent acquisition

Talent acquisition has a clear ladder, and each step can be done remotely from Nigeria. The table shows typical stages. Titles vary between companies.

StageTypical focusWhat moves you up
Recruiting coordinatorScheduling, ATS hygiene, candidate updatesSpeed, accuracy, candidate feedback
SourcerFinding and engaging candidatesReply rates, hires from your pipeline
Recruiter / TA specialistFull cycle from intake to offerRoles filled, time to hire, offer acceptance
Senior recruiter / TA partnerHard or senior roles, hiring plansHiring manager trust, closing senior hires
TA lead or managerTeam, process, employer brandBuilding a team and a repeatable process

Getting the first remote TA role

If you already recruit in Nigeria, whether in-house, at an agency or for an outsourcing firm, you're closer than you think. Rewrite your CV around numbers. "Filled 34 customer support roles in 6 months, average 21 days to offer" beats "handled end-to-end recruitment". The planned guide on how to write a CV for remote HR jobs shows the format.

If you're new, coordinator and sourcing roles are the realistic doors. Sourcing contracts from agencies let you build a record you can quote. Our guides to becoming a remote talent sourcer and to entry-level remote HR jobs cover these starting points.

Choosing a specialism

Recruiters who specialise get paid more and find work more easily than generalists. Common specialisms for Nigeria-based recruiters are:

  • Technical recruiting: hiring engineers, data and product people. It pays well and suits people who learn the vocabulary. See how to become a remote technical recruiter.
  • Africa and emerging-market hiring: companies expanding into Nigeria, Kenya or Ghana value someone who knows the talent pools, universities and salary expectations.
  • Volume hiring: customer support, sales and operations roles at scale. Good for building numbers quickly.
  • Early careers: internships, graduate programmes and campus partnerships, like the Moniepoint role above.

Moving sideways

Many recruiters later move into people operations, employer branding or recruiting operations (the tools, data and processes behind hiring). Our planned piece on moving from recruitment to people operations covers that switch. The guide on remote versus in-house recruiting explains how agency and in-house careers differ.

How to build a remote HR career from Nigeria

For general HR, the realistic path usually starts with Nigerian or African employers and widens from there.

  1. Get grounded locally. Two to three years as an HR officer or generalist in Nigeria teaches onboarding, payroll inputs, PAYE and pension deductions, discipline processes and the Labour Act. Start CIPM membership in this stage.
  2. Move to a remote-first or distributed employer. Nigerian and pan-African tech companies often run remote HR teams. Learn their HRIS, documentation habits and asynchronous working (handing work over in writing rather than in meetings).
  3. Add a portable specialism. HRIS administration, people analytics, learning and development, onboarding design or HR operations are much less tied to one country's law than employee relations.
  4. Add an international credential if you want to work abroad. Use the CIPD route via CIPM, or SHRM if you're targeting US firms.
  5. Target roles that cover your region. "HR Business Partner, Africa", "People Ops, EMEA" and "Payroll Specialist, Nigeria" ads at global companies or EOR providers are where your local expertise becomes an asset rather than a limit.

Roles to approach with caution are HR roles advising on UK, US or EU employment law for staff there. They usually require residence and right to work in that country. If you'd like to live abroad while working remotely, our digital nomad visa guides explain the income requirements for each country.

Pay: what the benchmarks mean for you

Published salary data mostly comes from the US and UK, and it describes people who live there. Use it as a ceiling and a reference point, not a forecast of your offer.

Role (US, May 2025)Median annual payApprox. naira
HR specialists (incl. recruiters)$75,940₦103.4 million
HR managers$149,280₦203.3 million

Sources: BLS HR specialists and BLS HR managers. Naira at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN, 23 October 2026), gross, rounded.

The BLS also notes that HR managers usually have five or more years of related experience. Many start as HR specialists, which matches the progression above.

A Nigeria-based recruiter working for a foreign company will usually be offered well below US local pay. Companies with location-based pay set lower bands for Nigeria, and agency contracts are priced against global talent markets. Nigerian employers hiring remotely within Nigeria often pay in naira, and neither ad above published a salary. Our remote recruiter salary guide gives role-specific dollar and naira figures. The planned piece on recruiter jobs that pay in dollars covers where foreign-currency pay is most likely.

Once dollar income arrives, the cost of moving it matters. See how to receive dollar payments in Nigeria and tax for remote workers in Nigeria.

Working hours and setup from Nigeria

Recruiting runs on calendars, so time zones shape your day more than in most remote jobs. Lagos is on WAT (UTC+1) all year.

  • UK and European teams: from 25 October 2026, UK hours of 9am to 5pm are 10am to 6pm in Lagos. Central European hours match Lagos in winter.
  • US East Coast teams: from 1 November 2026, 9am to 5pm New York time is 3pm to 11pm in Lagos. In summer it's 2pm to 10pm.
  • Candidate calls: if you recruit in the US for a US company, expect evening calls most days. Be honest in interviews about which hours you can sustain.

A dropped call during an offer conversation costs more than a dropped call in most jobs. Keep an inverter or solar backup for power. Use two internet sources, such as a fixed line or Starlink plus a MiFi or phone hotspot. Use a headset with a decent microphone. Candidates judge the company by how you sound.

Example (hypothetical): a 24-month plan from Lagos HR officer to remote recruiter

Example (hypothetical): Adaeze is an HR officer at a Lagos logistics firm with three years' experience, mostly recruitment and onboarding. She wants a remote TA role with a foreign company.

  • Months 1 to 3: She turns her hiring records into numbers (roles filled, days to offer, sources) and rebuilds her CV and LinkedIn profile around them. She completes the CIPM Associate process if she hasn't already.
  • Months 4 to 9: She takes a part-time sourcing contract with a European agency hiring support staff, learning Greenhouse and writing outreach in UK English.
  • Months 10 to 15: She applies for remote TA specialist roles at Nigerian and pan-African tech companies, using her agency results as evidence.
  • Months 16 to 24: She specialises in tech hiring, pursues CIPD recognition through the CIPM route, and targets "Africa" and "EMEA" recruiter roles at global companies.

This is a plan, not a promise. It shows how each step builds proof for the next.

Applying for remote HR and recruitment roles

  1. Filter by location first. Read the location line before the job description. "Remote, US" or "Remote, UK" usually means you must live there.
  2. Show numbers in your CV. Roles filled, time to hire, offer acceptance, employee numbers supported, policies written.
  3. Bring a work sample. A sourcing strategy for one of their open roles, a sample job ad or an onboarding checklist shows more than a cover letter.
  4. Prepare for a recruiter-specific interview. Expect intake scenarios, objection handling and a case on a hard-to-fill role. Practise with our recruiter interview questions.
  5. Confirm the arrangement. Ask whether you'd be an employee, an EOR employee or a contractor, the pay currency, and the hours you're expected to cover.

On WorkRemote, our admin and HR job listings show where each employer accepts applicants from.

Mistakes and scams to watch for

HR and recruitment attract a particular kind of scam, because the job itself involves candidates, documents and offers.

  • "Recruitment agent" roles that require a fee. You're asked to pay for training, a starter kit or a licence before you can recruit. Legitimate employers don't charge you to work.
  • Being asked to collect money from candidates. If a "client" wants you to collect processing or visa fees from job seekers, walk away. You'd be helping to run a scam.
  • Commission-only "recruiter" roles with no base pay or clear fee terms. Some are genuine agency arrangements, but get the fee structure, payment timing and guarantee period in writing.
  • Applying to roles that exclude Nigeria. It wastes your time and can make an ATS mark you as unqualified for future roles at the same company.
  • Overselling employment-law knowledge. Claiming expertise in UK or US employment law you don't have will come out in interview.

Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria covers the general warning signs.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Nigerian HR professional work remotely for a foreign company?

Yes, when the role is open to people living in Nigeria. These are most often recruitment, sourcing, HR operations, or HR roles covering Nigeria or Africa. HR roles advising on another country's employment law usually require residence there. Check the location line on each ad.

Is CIPM enough for international HR jobs?

CIPM is valued by Nigerian employers but is less known abroad. CIPM Associate and Full Members can gain CIPD membership through a 60-minute professional discussion, costing £120 plus CIPD fees (as of October 2026). For recruiter roles, a track record usually matters more than any certificate.

Which is easier to get remotely from Nigeria: HR or recruitment?

Recruitment is usually easier. Sourcing, screening and coordinating interviews work the same in every country, so companies are more willing to hire for them from abroad. General HR is more often tied to the law of the country where employees work.

Do I need a degree for a remote recruitment career?

Not always. The BLS says HR specialists in the US typically hold a bachelor's degree, but many recruiter ads focus on years of experience and results instead. Our planned guide to remote HR jobs without a degree covers routes for people without one.

How much do remote recruiters earn?

US recruiters and other HR specialists had a median of $75,940 a year in May 2025, according to the BLS. Nigeria-based recruiters working remotely are usually paid well below that. See our recruiter salary guide for figures closer to your situation.

Can I start in talent acquisition with no experience?

Yes, but usually through a coordinator, sourcing or internship role rather than a recruiter title. Agency sourcing contracts and volume hiring for customer support are common first steps. Use them to build numbers you can put on your CV.

What hours will I work as a remote recruiter for a US company?

Expect afternoon and evening work. From 1 November 2026, 9am to 5pm in New York is 3pm to 11pm in Lagos. In US summer time it is 2pm to 10pm.

Key takeaways

  • Recruitment is the most portable remote HR career from Nigeria. General HR is often tied to the employment law of the country where staff work.
  • Read the location line on every ad. A company that hires across Africa can still restrict its recruiter role to other regions.
  • Realistic employers are Nigerian and African companies with remote teams, global firms needing Africa coverage, and recruitment agencies hiring contractors.
  • CIPM counts in Nigeria. The CIPD mutual recognition route and SHRM-CP open doors in UK and US markets.
  • US pay data is a ceiling, not your offer. Check the currency, contract type and the hours you're expected to cover.
