Remote learning and development (L&D) jobs exist and some are open to people in Nigeria, but they make up a small part of HR hiring. They tend to go to people who can show training they designed, delivered or measured, not just HR experience in general. If you have run onboarding, organised staff training or built a compliance course at a Nigerian bank, school or company, you already have most of what an L&D coordinator or specialist needs. What usually holds people back is how they present that work and which ads they apply to.
This guide covers the main remote L&D job titles, which ones hire from Nigeria, the tools and qualifications employers ask for, and what pay looks like. It also gives a step-by-step plan for landing a remote training coordinator job, which is the most common way in for HR people.
Quick answer
Remote L&D jobs include training coordinator, L&D specialist, instructional designer, learning experience designer and L&D manager. Nigerian HR professionals can get them when the employer hires in Nigeria, Africa or worldwide, which you confirm on each ad. Employers usually want proof of training you designed or delivered, LMS (learning management system) experience and clear writing. A CIPD qualification helps but is rarely required. Start with coordinator or junior design roles.
What remote L&D work involves, and how it differs from general HR
Learning and development is the part of HR that helps employees build skills: onboarding new hires, compliance training, management development, product training and career paths. General HR covers the whole employee lifecycle, while L&D only covers the learning side of it.
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) describes training and development specialists as people who assess training needs, design manuals and online modules, choose materials, deliver training, evaluate programmes and handle admin such as scheduling and cost tracking. That breakdown fits remote L&D jobs well, because every part of it can be done online.
The differences that matter when the job is remote:
- Most delivery is online. You run Zoom or Teams sessions, build self-paced courses in an LMS and track completions in dashboards.
- Writing matters more than speaking. Async teams judge you by your facilitator guides, course scripts and Slack updates.
- You need numbers. Remote employers want completion rates, assessment scores and feedback scores, because they can't watch you train in person.
Remote L&D job titles and what each one does
L&D job titles overlap a lot, and different companies use different names for similar roles. The table below groups them by what you'd actually do all day.
| Job title | Main work | Typical entry route |
|---|---|---|
| Training coordinator | Scheduling, LMS admin, logistics, reporting | HR officer, admin, HR assistant |
| L&D specialist | Needs analysis, delivering and evaluating training | HR generalist, trainer |
| Instructional designer | Building courses, scripts, assessments | Teacher, trainer, writer |
| Learning experience designer | Instructional design with a learner-experience focus | Instructional designer, edtech |
| Corporate trainer or facilitator | Running live virtual sessions | Trainer, teacher, sales trainer |
| LMS administrator | Running the platform, enrolments, data | Training coordinator, IT support |
| L&D manager or business partner | Strategy, budgets, leading a team | 5+ years in L&D or HR |
Training coordinator
A remote training coordinator keeps the L&D programme running. Expect to book sessions across time zones, enrol people in the LMS, chase overdue compliance training, gather feedback forms, update course pages and produce monthly reports. This is the most realistic first L&D job for an HR officer because it rewards organisation and attention to detail more than design talent.
L&D specialist
An L&D specialist works out what a team needs to learn (training needs analysis), then designs or buys the training, delivers it and checks whether it worked. In a small company you'll do all of that. In a large one you might only handle one area, such as onboarding or leadership development.
Instructional designer and learning experience designer
Instructional designers turn subject-matter expert knowledge into courses: learning objectives, storyboards, e-learning modules, quizzes. "Learning experience designer" (LXD) is a newer title for similar work with more emphasis on the learner's experience. If this is the path you want, our instructional designer career guide covers skills, courses and portfolio projects in detail.
L&D manager
L&D managers own the training strategy and budget. The BLS profile for training and development managers says they usually need a bachelor's degree and five or more years of related experience. Remote L&D manager roles open to Nigeria do exist, but they mostly go to people already leading L&D at a well-known company.
Can you do remote L&D jobs from Nigeria?
Yes, if the employer hires people living in Nigeria and the ad doesn't limit applicants to another country. Many remote L&D ads, especially from US companies, are remote only within the US or UK. Read the location line and the application form questions before you spend an hour on a cover letter.
Remote L&D ads usually fall into one of these types:
| Ad says | What it usually means for you |
|---|---|
| Remote, US or Remote, UK | Only for residents with the right to work there |
| Remote, EMEA | Europe, Middle East and Africa, but some EMEA roles list only a few countries |
| Remote, Africa | Open to African residents, Nigeria usually included |
| Remote or Worldwide, no country | Possibly open, so check the form and FAQ |
| Remote, Nigeria | Open to Nigeria residents, often a Nigerian or pan-African company |
What real ads look like (checked October 2026)
When we checked in October 2026, ALX Africa's Greenhouse board had two remote L&D ads: a Learning Experience Designer and a Senior Learning Experience Designer. Both were full-time and listed as "Remote" with no country stated. Both application forms asked for your country of residence, whether you have the right to work there without sponsorship, and your expected gross annual salary in US dollars.
That pattern is common, and it gives you useful clues. If a form asks your salary in USD and doesn't require you to live in a particular country, the role is probably open to Nigeria. Still, confirm on the live ad, because ads close and change.
The junior ALX ad asked for instructional design or curriculum experience, knowledge of adult learning principles and digital learning platforms, help with LMS quality checks, and a willingness to learn basic HTML and CSS for small course edits. The senior ad added team leadership, sprint planning, AI-powered learning tools and authoring tools such as H5P. Neither ad gave a minimum number of years.
Some employers of record (EORs) and remote-first companies say on their careers page that most roles are globally remote. One example is Remote.com's careers page, checked in October 2026. That page also says location labels under job titles are "for advertising purposes only" and tells applicants to read the "Practicals" section at the bottom of each ad. The lesson applies everywhere: read the full ad, not just the title line. For a broader method, see our planned guide on checking whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents.
Employee or contractor?
Foreign companies hiring L&D staff in Nigeria usually take you on as an independent contractor or through an EOR service such as Deel or Remote. The difference affects your leave, notice period and tax. Our guide to contractor versus EOR employment from Nigeria explains what each means for you.
Skills and tools remote L&D employers ask for
Remote L&D ads repeat the same skill requirements. Most are things a Nigerian HR officer who has run in-house training already does, even if the CV doesn't say so yet.
Core L&D skills
- Training needs analysis: working out the skill gap before building anything, using surveys, appraisal data or manager interviews.
- Adult learning principles: frameworks such as ADDIE (Analyse, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate) and the Kirkpatrick model for evaluating training.
- Writing learning objectives and assessments: "By the end, the new agent can process a refund in Zendesk" rather than "understand refunds".
- Virtual facilitation: running engaging online sessions with breakout rooms, polls and short activities.
- Reporting: completion rates, quiz scores, satisfaction scores and, for more senior roles, business results such as fewer errors or faster onboarding.
Tools
| Tool type | Common examples | How to practise cheaply |
|---|---|---|
| Authoring tools | Articulate Storyline and Rise, H5P, Canva | H5P and Canva have free tiers |
| LMS | Moodle, TalentLMS, Docebo, Workday Learning | Moodle is open-source |
| Video and meetings | Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Loom | Free plans are enough to practise |
| Survey and data | Google Forms, Microsoft Forms, Excel or Sheets | Free |
| Project tracking | Asana, Trello, Notion | Free plans |
Articulate 360 is the authoring tool most often named in instructional design ads. As of October 2026, Articulate's pricing page lists the Individual plan at $1,449 a year per seat (about ₦1,973,500 at ₦1,362 to $1, the CBN NFEM weighted average for 23 October 2026), with a 14-day free trial. That's a big expense before you have a job. Use the free trial to build one or two portfolio pieces, and do the rest in H5P or Canva. Employers usually pay for licences once you're hired.
Qualifications: do you need CIPD or ATD?
A qualification helps, especially if you're moving across from general HR, but remote L&D employers mostly judge you on your portfolio and experience. Neither ALX ad we checked asked for any certification.
The two names you'll see on ads:
- CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, UK). CIPD lists its L&D routes on its qualifications finder. The Level 3 Foundation Certificate covers both HR and L&D and takes about 8 to 12 months. The Level 5 Associate Diploma in Organisational Learning and Development takes about 12 to 16 months. The Level 7 Advanced Diploma in Strategic Learning and Development takes about 16 to 24 months. Approved study centres teach the courses, and fees depend on the centre, so compare a few before you pay.
- ATD (Association for Talent Development, US). ATD offers the Associate Professional in Talent Development (APTD) and Certified Professional in Talent Development (CPTD) credentials, which show up more on US ads. Check the current eligibility rules and exam fees on td.org, because we couldn't confirm them for this guide.
If you already hold a Nigerian HR qualification such as CIPM, keep it on your CV. Pan-African employers recognise it, though UK and US hiring managers may not know it, so add one line explaining what it covers.
Our planned guide to the best HR certifications for remote jobs compares these options side by side. If budget is tight, build a portfolio before you pay for any certificate.
How much do remote L&D jobs pay?
No reliable public dataset covers pay for Nigeria-based remote L&D workers, so take any confident number with caution. US figures make a useful ceiling, not a forecast.
| Role (US benchmark) | Median pay, May 2025 | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Training and development specialists | $69,280 a year | BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook |
| Training and development managers | $133,000 a year | BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook |
These are medians for people working in the US. Remote employers that hire from Nigeria usually pay less than US local rates, often by a wide margin, though some pay global bands. That's why ALX's application form asks for your expected salary: offers depend on what you ask for and on the company's own bands.
Example (hypothetical): a pan-African edtech offers a Lagos-based training coordinator $1,800 a month as a contractor. At ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), that's ₦2,451,600 a month before tax and before any fees for moving the money into naira. As a contractor you'd have no paid leave unless the contract says so, so compare it with a local offer on the full package, not just the headline figure.
For pay ranges by role, see our instructional designer salary guide. For getting dollars into your account, see how to receive dollar payments in Nigeria. Tax on foreign income is covered in our guide to remote work tax in Nigeria.
How to get a remote training coordinator job
For most HR professionals the training coordinator role is the way into remote L&D. It needs organisation and solid tools more than a design portfolio, and it leads on to specialist and design roles. Here's a practical plan.
- List the training work you've already done. Onboarding sessions you organised, compliance courses you tracked, external trainers you booked, attendance you reported. Write down numbers wherever you have them: staff trained, completion rates, sessions per quarter.
- Learn one LMS properly. Install Moodle or sign up for a free TalentLMS plan. Create a short course, enrol test users, run a completion report and export it. Then you can honestly say you've administered an LMS.
- Build a coordinator portfolio of three items. A training calendar for a fictional 50-person company across Lagos, London and New York time zones. A one-page monthly L&D report with charts. A post-training feedback form with a short analysis of mock results.
- Rewrite your CV for L&D. Lead with training outcomes, not general HR duties. Our planned guide to writing a CV for remote HR jobs covers the format.
- Filter ads by location before you apply. Look for "Remote, Africa", "Remote, Nigeria", "EMEA" with Nigeria listed, or worldwide ads whose form accepts Nigerian residence. Skip "Remote, US" unless you live there.
- Search beyond the obvious title. Coordinator work also appears as "Learning Operations Coordinator", "L&D Assistant", "Training Administrator", "Enablement Coordinator" and "Onboarding Specialist".
- Prepare for a practical task. Coordinator interviews often include scheduling or reporting exercises, so practise building a clean spreadsheet quickly and explaining it.
- Apply steadily and track everything. A simple sheet with company, date, location rule and status stops you applying twice and shows you which kinds of ads respond.
Example (hypothetical): a coordinator portfolio piece
Training calendar for "Acme Logistics", Q1. 12 onboarding sessions, each run twice: at 10am Lagos time for Africa and Europe staff, and at 4pm Lagos time for US East staff (10am in New York during winter, when New York is 6 hours behind Lagos). Includes LMS enrolment deadlines, reminder emails at 7 days and 1 day before, and a completion target of 90% within 30 days of start date.
A one-page piece like that shows time-zone awareness, planning and measurement, which is what remote L&D managers screen coordinators for.
Moving from a Nigerian HR role into remote L&D
Most Nigerian HR officers have L&D experience that's buried under "HR generalist" duties. The move is mainly about pulling that work out and showing it properly.
Turn in-house work into evidence
- Onboarding you ran becomes an onboarding programme you designed. Describe the structure, the length and what changed, such as faster time to productivity or fewer early resignations, if you tracked it.
- A compliance drive becomes a training rollout. Say how many staff, what completion you reached and how you chased people up.
- Appraisal data becomes needs analysis. If you used appraisal results to pick training topics, that's training needs analysis, so name it that way.
Never share your employer's internal slides or staff data. Rebuild the idea with a fictional company and dummy figures, and say so.
Build one small e-learning sample
Even for coordinator or specialist roles, one short self-paced module helps a lot. Keep it under 10 minutes on a topic you know, such as "Handling a customer refund request" or "Your first week: tools and who to ask". Build it in H5P, Rise (on a trial) or a well-structured Google Slides deck with a quiz, then record a two-minute Loom walkthrough explaining your design choices.
Where L&D sits next to other HR paths
If you're not sure L&D is the right specialism, our planned overview of the best remote HR jobs for Nigerians compares it with recruitment, people operations and HR business partnering. If you're early in your career, entry-level remote HR jobs may be a better place to start. If you'd rather create and sell your own courses than work inside a company, that's a different route, covered in our planned guide to online course creator jobs.
Working remote L&D hours from Nigeria
L&D has more live work than most HR roles: you facilitate sessions, and those sessions have to suit the learners' time zones, not yours.
- UK and Europe teams: a 9am London session is 10am in Lagos in winter (GMT) and 9am in summer (BST). Central European teams are on the same time as Lagos in winter and one hour ahead in summer. This is the easiest overlap.
- US teams: US Eastern is 5 hours behind Lagos in summer and 6 hours behind from 1 November 2026, when US clocks change. A 10am New York session runs at 4pm Lagos time in winter. A 10am Pacific session runs at 7pm in winter. Expect some evening facilitation.
- Africa-focused employers: most of your learners will be within a few hours of WAT, which makes pan-African companies a practical first target.
Live facilitation also raises the bar on your setup. A lecture can survive a dropped connection, but a workshop with 40 people waiting can't. Have an inverter or solar backup that lasts a full session, keep two internet sources (for example a fixed line or MiFi plus a phone hotspot), use a wired headset, and test your screen-share and breakout rooms before every session. Record async versions of key sessions on Loom so a power cut doesn't wipe out a cohort's training.
Mistakes and red flags in remote L&D job hunting
- Applying to US-only ads. It's the most common waste of time. Check the location before reading the rest.
- Sending a general HR CV. L&D hiring managers skim for training outcomes, tools and samples. A list of HR duties gets skipped.
- Overclaiming design skills. If you've only coordinated, say so and apply for coordinator roles. A weak design test hurts more than an honest CV.
- Paying for "training" to get a job. Some fake recruiters say you must buy a course or certificate from them before you can start. CIPD's own qualifications page states that individuals should not be expected to pay for training as a condition of employment. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria covers other warning signs.
- Buying expensive software too early. Use free tools and trials until a portfolio piece or an employer justifies the cost.
Frequently asked questions
Can Nigerians get remote learning and development jobs with foreign companies?
Yes, when the employer hires in Nigeria, Africa or worldwide. Many US and UK ads are restricted to residents of those countries, so check the location line and the application form. Pan-African companies and remote-first employers are the most realistic targets.
How do I get a remote training coordinator job with no L&D job title on my CV?
Pull out the training work from your HR experience and present it as L&D: onboarding sessions, compliance tracking, trainer bookings and reports. Add a small portfolio (a training calendar, an L&D report and a feedback analysis) and learn one LMS such as Moodle. Then apply to coordinator, training administrator and learning operations roles.
Do I need a CIPD qualification for remote L&D jobs?
No, most remote L&D ads don't require one, though it strengthens your application, especially for UK employers. CIPD's L&D routes are the Level 3 Foundation Certificate, the Level 5 Associate Diploma in Organisational Learning and Development and the Level 7 Advanced Diploma in Strategic Learning and Development. A portfolio usually matters more for your first role.
What is the difference between an L&D specialist and an instructional designer?
An L&D specialist covers the whole training cycle: needs analysis, choosing or building training, delivery and evaluation. An instructional designer focuses on building the learning materials themselves, such as e-learning modules, scripts and assessments. In small companies one person often does both.
Which tools should I learn first for remote L&D work?
Start with one LMS (Moodle is free and open-source), one authoring tool (H5P is free, and Articulate offers a 14-day trial) and solid spreadsheet skills for reporting. Add Zoom or Teams facilitation features such as breakout rooms and polls. Those cover most junior L&D ads.
How much do remote L&D jobs pay Nigerians?
There's no reliable public figure for Nigeria-based remote L&D pay. Offers depend on the employer's salary bands and what you ask for. The US median for training and development specialists was $69,280 a year in May 2025 (BLS), but employers hiring from Nigeria usually pay well below US rates.
Are remote corporate trainer jobs common?
Fully remote trainer-only roles are less common than design or coordinator roles, because many companies want trainers who also build materials. Facilitation skills still count for a lot, and many L&D specialist ads expect you to run live virtual sessions as part of the job.
Key takeaways
- Remote L&D roles include training coordinator, L&D specialist, instructional designer, learning experience designer and L&D manager, and they're open to Nigerians only when the ad's location rules allow it.
- The training coordinator role is the most realistic first step for HR professionals, because it rewards organisation, LMS skills and reporting.
- Employers judge you on evidence: training outcomes with numbers, a small portfolio and at least one LMS you can use.
- CIPD's L&D qualifications help but are rarely required. Build your portfolio before you pay for a certificate.
- US pay figures are a ceiling, not a forecast, so research each employer's bands and compare the full package.
- Live facilitation across time zones needs reliable power, two internet sources and a plan for US evening sessions.
Next steps
Pick one action this week: rewrite your CV around training outcomes, set up a free Moodle course, or build the training calendar portfolio piece. Then search HR and admin listings on WorkRemote for training, learning and enablement roles. Each listing shows where applicants may live, and applying is always free. After you search, use "Get email updates" to save the search and receive a daily digest of new matching jobs. If you'd like someone on our team to rewrite your CV and LinkedIn profile for L&D roles, see what changes in a professional CV and LinkedIn review, which is part of Premium. For the full instructional design path, our interview questions for instructional designers will help you prepare.
