The best-paid remote jobs for technical people are in software engineering, cloud and DevOps, cybersecurity, and data science or machine learning. In the US, every one of these has a median salary above $120,000 a year. A Nigeria-based worker will usually be offered less than that, and what moves you from a $1,000 contract to a $7,000-a-month role is seniority, specialism and proof of work far more than the job title.

This guide ranks the main technical specialisms using official US pay data. It then shows the gap between those benchmarks and what remote workers in Nigeria are paid, and walks through what real job ads open to Nigeria, Africa or EMEA asked for in October 2026. You'll also see how to move into the higher bands, plus the local costs (power, internet, payment fees, tax) that decide how much of the dollar figure you actually keep.

Quick answer

Software engineering, cloud and DevOps, cybersecurity, and data science or machine learning are the highest-paying remote technical specialisms. US medians for these fields sit between about $120,000 and $136,000 a year (BLS, May 2025). Nigeria-based remote workers are usually paid well below US rates. One modelled estimate puts the median for a remote full-stack engineer in Nigeria at about $27,800 a year, with the top tenth earning above $86,000. Seniority and specialism decide which end you land on.

How we ranked these technical specialisms

There's no official salary survey of Nigeria-based remote workers by tech specialism. Instead of inventing one, we used two kinds of evidence and kept them separate:

  1. US benchmark pay. This comes from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Outlook Handbook, which reports median pay for May 2025. A median is the midpoint: half the workers in that occupation earn more and half earn less. These numbers show which specialisms the global market values most. They are not what a company will offer someone living in Lagos or Enugu.
  2. Nigeria-specific estimates and live job ads. These show what is actually on offer to people here, and what employers ask for in return.

We ranked specialisms by the US benchmark. We then adjusted the advice to where Nigeria-based applicants actually get hired. BLS doesn't publish separate figures for DevOps, site reliability or machine learning engineers. For those roles, we say which BLS category is the closest match instead of making up a number.

The highest-paying technical specialisms at a glance

All figures below are US medians for May 2025 from the BLS. They are gross annual pay for workers in the US, and growth is the BLS projection for 2025 to 2035.

SpecialismUS median pay (BLS, May 2025)Projected US growth 2025–35
Software development$135,98010%
Network and cloud architecture$134,0508%
Information security (cybersecurity)$129,18021%
Data science$120,23035%
Software QA and testing$104,3006%

Sources: BLS software developers and QA testers, BLS computer network architects, BLS information security analysts, BLS data scientists.

Two patterns are useful to know. First, pay is bunched closely at the top: the gap between software development and cybersecurity is under $7,000 in US terms. Pick the specialism you can get senior in fastest, not the one at the top of the table. Second, the growth figures differ far more than the pay does. Data science (35%) and cybersecurity (21%) are projected to grow much faster than QA testing (6%). That tells you where demand is likely to build up over the next decade.

What Nigeria-based technical workers are actually paid

Remote pay for people living in Nigeria is usually well below US local pay. Many companies set pay by location. Others hire through contractor platforms or agencies that take a margin. Some simply pay what the local market will accept.

The best Nigeria-specific number we could find comes from Plane, a global payroll company. Its salary page for remote full-stack engineers in Nigeria gives base salary in US dollars, without benefits. The page does not explain its methodology or give a date, so treat it as a modelled estimate, not a survey.

Percentile (Plane estimate)$ a yearRoughly ₦ a month
10th$11,104₦1,260,000
Median$27,793₦3,155,000
90th$86,120₦9,775,000

Naira figures are converted at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026) and rounded. They are gross figures, before payment fees and tax.

The spread is the useful part. A full-stack engineer in the bottom tenth earns about an eighth of one in the top tenth, in the same country and the same job family. What usually separates them:

  • Seniority. Senior and staff roles pay a different rate, not a slightly higher one.
  • Who pays you. A US or European product company hiring you directly or through an employer of record (EOR) usually pays more than a Nigerian startup or an outsourcing agency.
  • Specialism. Generalist web development is crowded. Cloud infrastructure, security and data engineering have fewer qualified applicants.
  • Pay policy. Some employers pay one global band for a level, some adjust by location, and some never publish a range at all.

If you're weighing a specific offer, how to compare international salary offers and how to calculate your take-home pay cover the arithmetic.

The specialisms one by one

Backend, full-stack and platform engineering

Software development has the highest US median in the table ($135,980). It also has the most remote job ads overall, so it's the specialism with the most routes in. The catch is competition. Junior full-stack roles pull in applicants from every country, and that drives pay down.

Pay rises when you move towards the backend and the infrastructure behind it. Distributed systems, APIs that handle real traffic, payment systems and platform engineering are all better paid. An October 2026 Senior Software Engineer ad from Sand Technologies (location: "Africa") asked for 5+ years of experience, backend work in Python, Go, Ruby, Node or C#, production experience on a major cloud platform (AWS "strongly preferred"), automated testing and CI/CD.

Role pay and paths: software engineer salaries, backend developer pay, full-stack developer pay, and how to become a remote backend developer.

Cloud, DevOps and site reliability engineering

BLS doesn't track DevOps or site reliability engineering (SRE) as separate occupations. The closest categories are software developers and computer network architects ($134,050). In job ads, cloud and DevOps work increasingly appears inside senior engineering roles, as in the Sand Technologies ad above.

This specialism suits Nigerians who started in IT support or system administration. You already understand servers, networks and outages, and much of the move is learning infrastructure-as-code, containers and one cloud platform in depth. Our guides to becoming a remote DevOps engineer and remote cloud engineering cover the tools. For AWS specifically, see remote AWS engineer jobs and certifications.

Cybersecurity

Information security analysts have a US median of $129,180 and projected growth of 21%. That's one of the strongest combinations of pay and demand in technology. The honest limit is that many security roles, especially in government, defence and banking, require citizenship, security clearance or residence in a particular country. Those roles are not open to Nigeria-based applicants, however good you are.

The remote-friendly parts of security are cloud security, application security, governance, risk and compliance (GRC), and security operations at private companies. Start with the remote cybersecurity analyst career guide. For pay in depth, see high-paying remote jobs in cybersecurity.

Data science, data engineering and machine learning

Data scientists have a US median of $120,230. The 35% projected growth is the highest in this table. Machine learning engineers don't have their own BLS category; they usually sit under software developers or data scientists.

For Nigeria-based applicants, data engineering is often the best-paid way in. Pipelines, warehouses and orchestration tools such as Airflow are concrete skills that employers can test. Pure research roles more often ask for advanced degrees. An October 2026 Sand Technologies board listed a Principal Data Scientist role located in "Africa", which shows the senior end exists, but it was at principal level.

See data engineer careers, machine learning engineer careers and the data scientist path. If you're starting from analysis, high-paying remote jobs in data analytics is the better next read.

QA automation and test engineering

Software QA analysts and testers have a lower US median ($104,300) and slower projected growth (6%). It's still well-paid work, and it's one of the more realistic senior remote routes for testers in Nigeria. The money is in automation, not manual testing.

An October 2026 Senior Test Automation Engineer ad from Sand Technologies was listed as "EMEA | Remote" and described as fully remote. It asked for 5+ years in quality engineering with a heavy automation focus, strong TypeScript, Playwright for UI automation, GraphQL API testing and CI/CD (GitHub Actions given as an example). Compare that with manual QA tester pay to see why the move to automation matters. The tooling is covered in remote automation testing jobs.

Mobile development

Mobile isn't separated from software development in BLS data, so it shares the $135,980 benchmark. In practice, a developer who has shipped apps to both stores and can show download numbers is easier to verify than a web developer with a GitHub link. See mobile developer salaries and the Android and iOS pay guides.

Solutions, forward-deployed and sales engineering

These are technical roles that face clients: you build or configure the product alongside the customer. They often pay well because few engineers can also handle a client meeting. In October 2026, Sand Technologies listed a "Forward Deployed Engineer, Nigeria" and a "Technical Sales Engineer" located in "India; Nigeria". These are rare examples of technical ads that name Nigeria outright. Read the full ad before assuming either is fully remote, because client-facing roles often involve travel to client sites. See how to get a remote solutions engineer job.

What real job ads open to Nigeria, Africa or EMEA asked for (October 2026)

We opened the Sand Technologies job board and several of its ads on 27 October 2026. The listings change often, so check the Sand Technologies Greenhouse board yourself before applying. This isn't a recommendation of the company, just an example of what high-paying technical ads look like when they're open to this region.

Ad (as of October 2026)Location as writtenWhat it asked for
Senior Software EngineerAfrica5+ years, backend, AWS, CI/CD
Senior Test Automation EngineerEMEA, Remote5+ years, TypeScript, Playwright, GraphQL
Forward Deployed EngineerNigeriaNot reviewed in full
Technical Sales EngineerIndia; NigeriaNot reviewed in full

Three lessons from these ads apply well beyond one company:

  • Seniority is the entry ticket. Both ads we read in full asked for five or more years of experience. The high-paying remote technical roles open to this region are mostly senior roles.
  • Neither ad published a salary. Both application forms asked for your salary expectation in US dollars. If you put in a low number, that's the number you'll be offered, so research the range before you apply. Our guide to negotiating a dollar salary helps here.
  • "Africa" doesn't always mean fully remote. The Senior Software Engineer ad described an "internationally distributed" team but didn't say whether the role was fully remote. The form asked about travel to client sites. Ask the recruiter before you plan your life around it.

On other job boards, Himalayas tags listings by eligible country. Its Nigeria software engineer page showed a mix of full-time and contractor roles in October 2026, but most listings showed no salary. Treat a country tag on any aggregator as a lead, and confirm eligibility on the employer's own ad.

How to read location labels on technical job ads

Location labels decide whether a high salary is open to you at all. In short:

  • "Remote, Nigeria" or "Africa": open to you, subject to the details in the ad.
  • "EMEA": Europe, the Middle East and Africa. It often includes Nigeria, but some employers can only pay in certain EMEA countries. Our guide on what EMEA means in a remote job description explains how to check.
  • "Worldwide" or "anywhere": usually open, though some companies exclude sanctioned or hard-to-pay countries. See what worldwide remote means from Nigeria.
  • "Remote, US" or "Remote, Canada": usually requires existing work authorisation there. A senior US salary in that ad doesn't apply to you.

The time zone also affects which jobs you can realistically take. EMEA roles fit Nigerian hours well: Lagos is one hour ahead of London from 25 October 2026 and on the same time as Central Europe in winter. US East Coast teams are 6 hours behind Lagos from 1 November 2026. A 9am meeting in New York becomes 3pm here, and an on-call rota can push into your night.

How to move into the higher pay bands

The move from the median to the top tenth in the Plane estimate is mostly a move up in seniority. These steps follow the pattern the senior ads above reward:

  1. Go deep in one stack and one cloud. "Python, AWS, Airflow" or "TypeScript, Playwright, GitHub Actions" reads as senior. A list of twelve languages reads as junior.
  2. Show production experience, not tutorials. Write about systems you ran with real users: traffic, incidents, migrations, costs. If your current job is local, that still counts.
  3. Add testing and CI/CD to whatever you do. Every senior ad we opened mentioned automated testing or CI/CD.
  4. Build a public portfolio that shows how you think. Architecture write-ups, pull requests to open-source projects and post-mortems prove more than certificates. See how to build a software portfolio for remote employers.
  5. Practise writing. Remote teams decide a lot in writing, through design documents and pull request descriptions. Clear English writing is a pay skill.
  6. Name a researched number. When a form asks for your expectation in USD, base it on published ranges and offers you can compare, not your current naira salary.

For the longer plan, read how to build a career that leads to a high-paying remote job. If you're already senior and aiming higher, see remote jobs paying $5,000 a month or more.

Nigeria-specific costs that reduce a high salary

A $5,000 offer isn't $5,000 in your account. Check these before you accept:

Mistakes that keep technical people in the low pay bands

  • Applying to US-only roles. The salary in the ad is real, but if the role needs US work authorisation, you won't get it. Filter by location first.
  • Quoting your expectation in naira terms. If you earn ₦800,000 a month locally and ask for $1,000 a month, you may be accepted on the spot and stay underpaid for years.
  • Staying generalist for too long. "Full-stack developer" with three years of tutorials competes with thousands. "Backend engineer, payments, Go, AWS" competes with far fewer.
  • Paying for "placement" in a high-paying tech job. Real employers don't charge applicants. Anyone asking for an upfront fee, or to buy equipment through them, is a red flag. See how to spot remote job scams.
  • Ignoring the time-zone cost. A US role that pays 20% more but keeps you working until 1am every night may not be the better deal.

Frequently asked questions

What is the highest-paying remote tech job for Nigerians?

Senior backend, platform, cloud and security engineering roles usually pay the most. In US BLS data, software development has the highest median of the specialisms covered here ($135,980, May 2025). What you'll earn from Nigeria depends more on your seniority and the employer than on the specialism.

How much do remote software engineers in Nigeria earn?

One modelled estimate from Plane puts the median at about $27,800 a year for remote full-stack engineers in Nigeria, roughly ₦3.2 million a month at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN, 23 October 2026). The top tenth earn above $86,000. The page doesn't state its methodology, so treat these as rough guides.

Will a US company pay me the same as a US-based engineer?

Usually not. Many companies adjust pay by location, and contractor platforms and agencies take a margin. Some employers pay one band for a level wherever you live. Ask about the pay policy directly, and compare offers using how international companies set remote salaries.

Which tech skill should I learn for the best remote pay?

Pick the specialism closest to what you already do, then go deep. A sysadmin moves faster into cloud and DevOps, and an analyst into data engineering. US pay for the top specialisms differs by only a few thousand dollars, so speed to seniority matters more than the choice.

Do I need a degree for high-paying remote tech jobs?

Often not, but it depends on the specialism. Engineering ads usually list a degree as desirable rather than required, and the Sand Technologies senior engineer ad listed a B.Sc. or M.Sc. under "desirable". Research-heavy data science and some security roles more often expect degrees or certifications.

Are entry-level remote tech jobs well paid?

Rarely, from Nigeria. The high-paying roles we found open to Africa or EMEA asked for five or more years of experience. Juniors usually start with local companies, contract work or lower-paid remote roles; see remote jobs for Nigerians with no experience.

Is cybersecurity or cloud better paid remotely?

In US data they're close: information security analysts have a median of $129,180 and network architects $134,050 (BLS, May 2025). Cloud roles tend to be easier to get from Nigeria, because many security jobs require citizenship or clearance.

Key takeaways

  • The best-paid remote technical specialisms are software engineering, cloud and DevOps, cybersecurity, and data science or machine learning, with US medians of about $120,000 to $136,000 (BLS, May 2025).
  • US figures are benchmarks. Nigeria-based remote workers are usually paid less, with a modelled median of about $27,800 a year for full-stack engineers.
  • The range within a single role is wide, and seniority, specialism and the type of employer decide where you land.
  • The high-paying technical ads we found open to Nigeria, Africa or EMEA in October 2026 asked for 5+ years of experience and didn't publish salaries.
  • Before you accept, check the location label, the time zone, how you'll be engaged, payment fees and tax.
