Remote Jobs for People With Strong Communication Skills: A Guide for Nigerians
Remote jobs for people with strong communication skills: support, sales, writing and tutoring roles, which accept Nigerians, US pay benchmarks and how to prove it.

If you write clearly, explain things patiently or can hold a stranger's attention on a call, the remote jobs that fit you best are in customer support, sales, writing and editing, community management, tutoring and assistant work. These roles hire people for how well they communicate more than for a particular degree, so many of them are open to beginners.
The catch is that "good communicator" appears on almost every CV, and speaking fluent English doesn't make you stand out when the job is open to applicants worldwide. Employers want proof: a clear writing sample, a calm call recording, a ticket reply that solves the problem in four sentences.
This guide sorts communication-heavy remote jobs by the kind of communication they need: spoken, written or persuasive. It shows how to check whether a vacancy accepts applicants in Nigeria and gives US pay benchmarks with honest caveats. It also covers how to prove the skill when you have little work history, plus what to sort out at home first (power, internet, time zones).
Quick answer
The remote jobs that suit strong communicators are customer support and live chat, sales development and appointment setting, content writing, copywriting and technical writing, editing and proofreading, community management, online tutoring, and virtual assistant work. Support, appointment setting and VA roles accept beginners most often. Check each ad's location line before you apply, because many remote jobs are limited to particular countries. Get a writing or call sample ready in advance, because that is the proof employers look for.
What remote employers mean by strong communication skills
In an office, a vague email gets fixed with a quick chat at someone's desk. In a remote team spread across Lagos, London and Toronto, the person who reads your message may be asleep when you send it, so it has to make sense the first time. That is why remote employers care about communication more than most office employers do.
Remote job ads usually mean one of four things when they ask for communication skills:
- Written, asynchronous communication. Slack messages, emails, support tickets, documentation and status updates that someone reads hours later and can act on without asking you questions.
- Spoken communication. Calls, video meetings and voice support where you need clear speech, active listening and a calm voice when the customer is upset.
- Persuasive communication. Sales, outreach and recruiting, where you have to get a busy stranger to reply, book a meeting or say yes.
- Explaining. Tutoring, onboarding, technical writing and training, where you turn something complicated into steps a beginner can follow.
Most people are stronger in one or two of these. Knowing which ones are yours tells you which jobs to target. Someone who writes sharp, warm emails but hates phone calls should look at chat support, writing and VA work, not cold calling.
Remote jobs that suit strong communicators
The table below sorts the main options by the type of communication they rely on and how open they are to beginners. "Beginner-friendly" means employers in this field commonly hire people without previous experience in the role. It doesn't mean every vacancy does.
| Role | Main communication type | Beginner-friendly? |
|---|---|---|
| Customer support (chat, email) | Written | Often |
| Customer service (voice) | Spoken | Often |
| Appointment setter | Spoken, persuasive | Often |
| Sales development representative | Persuasive, written | Sometimes |
| Virtual assistant | Written, organising | Often |
| Community manager or moderator | Written, people skills | Sometimes |
| Online English tutor | Spoken, explaining | Sometimes |
| Content writer or copywriter | Written | Sometimes, with samples |
| Editor or proofreader | Written | Rarely at first |
| Technical writer | Written, explaining | Rarely at first |
| Account executive | Persuasive, spoken | Rarely at first |
| Customer success manager | Spoken, relationship | Rarely at first |
Spoken and people-facing roles
Voice customer service and call centre work suit people who stay calm and clear on the phone. You will usually work from a script or knowledge base, log every call in a tool such as Zendesk, Freshdesk or Salesforce, and be measured on resolution and customer satisfaction scores. Our guide on becoming a remote customer support specialist covers the tools and the hiring process.
Online tutoring fits people who explain well and are patient. English tutoring is the most common route, and our page on working as an online English tutor explains what platforms and schools ask for.
Community management means running a brand's Discord, Slack, Facebook group or forum: welcoming members, answering questions and calming arguments. The remote community manager career guide shows how people get started.
Chat, email and assistant roles
If you write better than you speak, chat and email support is usually the easiest first remote job. You answer customers in writing, often juggling two or three chats at once, so typing speed and clear, friendly short replies matter. For a step-by-step route with no background, see getting a remote customer service job without experience.
Virtual assistants spend most of the day writing: inbox management, scheduling emails, client follow-ups and short reports. Our virtual assistant career page breaks down the work.
Remote jobs for people with strong written communication skills
Writing is the communication skill that travels best online, because your work is the proof. A good article, a clean help-centre page or a sharp sales email shows an employer exactly what you can do, and nobody cares where you typed it.
The main written-communication roles
- Content writer. Blog posts, guides and newsletters for companies, often with an SEO focus. See the content writer career guide.
- Copywriter. Short, persuasive writing: landing pages, ads, product descriptions, email campaigns. Pay depends heavily on results and niche. See how to become a remote copywriter.
- Technical writer. User guides, API documentation and help-centre articles. You need to understand the product well enough to explain it. See the technical writer role page.
- Editor and proofreader. Checking other people's writing for clarity, accuracy and house style. You usually need a track record first, because editors are hired to catch what writers miss. See the proofreader guide.
- UX writer. The words inside apps and websites: buttons, error messages, onboarding screens.
- Grant writer. Funding proposals for nonprofits, which suits people with NGO or research backgrounds.
- AI training writer. Writing and rating text to train AI models, usually as a contractor paid by the hour.
What strong written communication actually looks like
Employers can't see your talent unless the writing is clear. In practice, strong remote writing means:
- The main point comes in the first sentence.
- Paragraphs are short and each does one job.
- You follow the brief's spelling convention (US or UK) and tone without being reminded.
- Your requests are specific ("Can you approve the draft by 3pm GMT Thursday?") rather than open ("Let me know your thoughts").
- You edit out filler, including the filler AI tools add.
If you want to sharpen this, our planned guide on improving written communication for remote work goes through it in detail. For a fuller list of writing roles, see the best remote writing jobs for Nigerians.
A benchmark for writing pay
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) puts the median pay for technical writers at $90,390 a year (May 2025) and says a bachelor's degree is the typical entry route. That figure is for people employed in the United States. A company hiring a technical writer in Nigeria as a contractor will usually offer less, so use it as a ceiling for comparison, not a target. For writing pay that applies more directly, see our content writer salary guide.
Remote sales jobs for people with strong communication skills
Sales is where good communicators can earn the most, and where the risk is highest. You talk to strangers, handle rejection every day and get paid partly on results.
Sales roles that suit communicators
- Appointment setter. You call or message leads and book them into meetings with a closer. It is the most common entry point. See the appointment setter career guide.
- Sales development representative (SDR). You research prospects, send cold emails and LinkedIn messages, make calls and book qualified meetings for account executives. Strong writers often do well here, because a lot of outreach is written. See our SDR career page.
- Account executive (AE). You run demos, negotiate and close deals. Most companies want SDR or sales experience first. See the account executive guide.
- Account manager or customer success manager. You keep existing clients happy, renew contracts and find upsell opportunities. This suits relationship-builders more than cold callers.
How sales pay works
The BLS notes that most sales employers combine a salary with commission or bonuses, and that commission is usually a percentage of sales. The same page puts the US median at $72,080 a year for wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives (except technical and scientific products) and $104,920 for those selling technical and scientific products (May 2025). Those are US benchmarks for US-based staff, not offers you should expect from Lagos.
Be careful with commission-only roles. Some are genuine, but many are a way for a company to get free outreach from people abroad who never close enough to earn. Before accepting, ask what the base pay is, what share of current reps hit target and who supplies the leads. Our planned guide on the risks of commission-only remote sales goes through these questions, and entry-level remote sales jobs covers how beginners get in.
Time zones matter more in sales
Cold calling works when the prospect is at their desk. If you sell to US East Coast businesses, their 9am to 5pm is 2pm to 10pm in Lagos while the US is on summer time (EDT), and 3pm to 11pm from 1 November 2026, when US clocks go back to EST. US West Coast hours run later still: 5pm to 1am in Lagos in summer, 6pm to 2am in winter. UK prospects are easier. Their working day is 10am to 6pm in Lagos while London is on GMT (UK clocks went back on 25 October 2026) and the same as Lagos time in summer (BST).
Being fluent in English: what it gets you and what it doesn't
Fluent English is a real advantage for Nigerians. Almost every communication-heavy remote job with a UK, US, Canadian or Australian company runs in English, and a Nigerian graduate can usually work in it from day one.
It is a starting point, though, not something that makes you stand out. A role advertised as "Remote, worldwide" is open to fluent English speakers from dozens of countries. What gets you hired is what you do with the language.
What employers look for beyond fluency
- Consistent spelling and style. Use US spelling for US companies ("organize", "color") and UK spelling for UK ones, and keep it consistent across your CV, cover letter and samples.
- The right register. Nigerian professional English can be quite formal ("Kindly revert", "I wish to humbly request"). International teams usually prefer plain and friendly ("Could you send this by Friday?"). Neither is wrong. Matching the team's style is the skill.
- Clear speech on calls. For voice roles, employers care that customers understand you quickly. A Nigerian accent is not a problem. Speaking too fast, a poor microphone or background noise are.
- Writing that needs no edits. Fluency in conversation and error-free writing are different skills. Have someone strict read your samples before you send them.
Our planned guide on improving business English for international remote jobs covers these habits in more depth.
Do remote employers ask Nigerians for IELTS?
Usually not. Remote employers normally judge your English from your application, a writing test and the interview. The place where Nigerians do get asked for English tests is immigration. The UK government's list of nationalities exempt from proving English does not include Nigeria, and it says that applicants from countries not on the list must prove their English "even if English is an official language". That rule applies to visas, not to remote jobs you do from Nigeria. If you plan to work abroad on a digital nomad visa later, check that country's rules on our digital nomad visa pages.
Other languages are a bigger edge
If you also speak French, Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa or Nigerian Pidgin, you compete in a much smaller pool. As of October 2026, Remotasks had a live ad for AI Training for Igbo Writers listed as "Remote - Nigeria". It is contract work for a Scale affiliate, Smart Ecosystem, Inc., paying up to $17 an hour (about ₦23,150 at ₦1,362 to $1, the CBN rate of 23 October 2026). The ad also says onboarding rates are lower, rates vary by country and US-based applicants are preferred, so read the full ad before counting on that rate. For more options, see remote jobs for people who speak several languages and remote jobs for Nigerians fluent in French.
How to check whether a communication job is open to Nigeria
A strong application wasted on a job you can't legally take is still wasted. Before applying, read the location line and the eligibility section of the full ad, not just the "Remote" tag.
Three real ads (all checked October 2026) show how much the wording varies:
| Ad wording | What it means for a Nigerian applicant |
|---|---|
| "Remote - Nigeria" (Remotasks, Igbo writers) | Open to you, but check the pay rate for your country |
| "Latin America - Remote" (Donorbox, customer support) | Not open to you, even though it is remote |
| "Hybrid - London" with "EMEA" in the title (Vercel sales roles) | Office-based in London; "EMEA" describes the territory, not where you can live |
The Donorbox jobs board listed a "Customer Support Specialist - Trial to Hire" role as "Latin America - Remote". The Vercel jobs board listed roles such as "Account Executive-Startups, EMEA (French Speaker)" as "Hybrid - London". Both are useful reminders that a remote tag or a region name doesn't mean you can apply from Lagos.
Some companies state their location policy on their careers page. Automattic's careers page says "Work with us from wherever you like" and "We offer salaries based on skills, not location", and the company is known for hiring support staff it calls Happiness Engineers. When we checked its jobs page in October 2026 it showed no open roles, so a company's general policy doesn't mean it is hiring right now. Always check the live ad.
For more on reading these lines, see what EMEA means in a remote job ad and how to verify whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents.
What communication-heavy remote jobs pay
Pay varies so much by company, country and contract type that one "average" would mislead you. US government figures give a useful ceiling, as long as you remember they describe US-based employees.
| Role (BLS category) | US median pay | Period |
|---|---|---|
| Customer service representatives | $44,770 a year ($21.53 an hour) | May 2025 |
| Technical writers | $90,390 a year | May 2025 |
| Sales reps (wholesale and manufacturing, except technical) | $72,080 a year | May 2025 |
| Sales reps (technical and scientific products) | $104,920 a year | May 2025 |
Source: BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook pages for customer service representatives, technical writers and sales representatives. The customer service page also projects a 5% fall in US employment in the role between 2025 and 2035, which is worth knowing if you see support as a long-term career rather than a starting point.
Remote pay for people in Nigeria is usually well below these US figures. Many companies set pay by location, contractor rates for Africa-based workers are often a fraction of US pay, and entry-level support or appointment-setting roles sit at the lower end. What pushes your pay up is a specialist niche (SaaS, fintech, healthcare), a second language, sales commission you actually earn, and a portfolio of written work. For role-by-role figures in dollars and naira, see our salary guides for customer support specialists, sales development representatives and virtual assistants.
Once you're paid, you'll need a way to receive the money. Our guide to receiving dollar payments in Nigeria compares the apps and fees.
How to prove your communication skills with little or no experience
Saying you are a strong communicator proves nothing. Showing it does. Build two or three of these before you start applying:
- A writing sample in the format of the job. For support roles, write five replies to realistic customer complaints. For content roles, write two 800-word posts in a niche you know. For SDR roles, write a three-email outreach sequence for a real product.
- A short video or voice clip. Record a two-minute Loom explaining something you know well, such as how to set up a Grey or Payoneer account. For voice roles, this is often more persuasive than anything on your CV.
- Evidence from what you have already done. Running a church media team's WhatsApp group, a student association newsletter, NYSC community development projects or sales in a family business all involved real communication. Describe what you did and the result.
- Your application itself. A short, specific, error-free cover note is the first writing sample a recruiter sees.
Example (hypothetical): a short application note for a chat support role
"Hi Sarah, I'm applying for the Customer Support Specialist role. I've attached five sample replies to common billing and login questions about your product, written using your help-centre articles. I'm in Lagos (WAT, UTC+1) and can cover your 9am to 5pm GMT shift, which is 10am to 6pm here in winter. I have inverter and solar backup at home, plus two internet connections."
It is short, it shows the work, and it answers the employer's three worries (skill, hours and reliability) before they ask.
Our planned guide on proving your skills when you have no work experience goes into portfolio-building in more depth, and the no-experience remote jobs guide lists other beginner-friendly roles.
What to sort out at home first
Communication jobs are less forgiving of a bad setup than most remote work. A developer can push code an hour late. A support agent who drops off a live chat, or a sales rep whose call cuts out mid-pitch, loses the customer.
- Power. Grid supply is unreliable in much of Nigeria, so plan for an inverter, a solar setup or a generator that covers your laptop, router and a light for your whole shift.
- Internet. Keep two connections, for example a fixed or 5G home connection plus a MiFi or phone hotspot on a different network. Starlink is available in Nigeria. Check the current price before budgeting for it.
- A quiet space and a headset. For voice roles, a USB headset with a noise-cancelling microphone matters more than a better laptop. Generator noise, street hawkers and family conversations all get picked up on calls.
- Shift planning. US-facing support and sales shifts run into your evening and late night. Decide in advance whether you can sustain that, and say so honestly in interviews.
Common mistakes and scams to avoid
Mistakes that cost good communicators the job
- Writing a long cover letter to prove you can write. Recruiters read applications quickly. Short and specific beats long and formal.
- Mixing US and UK spelling in one application, or using the wrong one for the employer's market.
- Applying to roles restricted to other countries, which tells the recruiter you didn't read the ad.
- Over-polishing with AI tools until your samples sound like everyone else's. Editors and hiring managers notice.
- Treating fluency as the qualification. List the communication you have actually done, with results.
Scams aimed at communicators
Fake "chat moderator", "customer care agent" and "sales assistant" jobs are common on Telegram, WhatsApp and Facebook. Warning signs include being asked to pay for training or a starter kit, being "hired" after a text-only chat, and pay that looks far too high for the work. Real employers often warn about impersonators. Automattic's jobs page, for example, says its hiring happens only through its official careers page. Our guide on spotting remote job scams in Nigeria lists more red flags.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a remote job just because I speak good English?
Not on its own. Fluent English gets you to the starting line for most international remote jobs, but worldwide roles attract fluent speakers from many countries. Pair it with proof: writing samples, a call recording, or results from past customer-facing work.
What remote jobs can I do with good communication skills and no experience?
Chat and email customer support, voice customer service, appointment setting, virtual assistant work and some community moderation roles hire beginners most often. Entry-level SDR and content writing roles are possible if you bring strong samples. Editing, technical writing and account executive roles usually need experience first.
Do remote employers make Nigerians take IELTS?
Rarely. Remote employers usually judge English through your application, a writing or typing test and the interview. English tests come up for Nigerians mainly in immigration, because countries such as the UK don't list Nigeria as exempt from proving English for visas.
Is remote sales a good fit if I'm a confident talker with no sales experience?
It can be, starting as an appointment setter or SDR. Sales rewards confidence, listening and handling rejection, but pay is often partly commission. Ask about base pay and target attainment before accepting, and be cautious about commission-only offers.
Does a Nigerian accent stop me from getting voice support jobs?
No. Employers care about whether customers understand you easily, not where your accent comes from. Speak at a steady pace, use a good headset and work from a quiet room. Those make a bigger difference than accent.
Do I need a degree for remote writing jobs?
Not usually for content writing, copywriting or proofreading, where your samples matter more than certificates. Technical writing is different. The BLS says a bachelor's degree is the typical entry route in the US, and some employers also want knowledge of a technical field.
Can I earn from speaking Igbo, Yoruba or Hausa remotely?
Yes, in some roles. AI training projects, translation and localisation sometimes recruit speakers of Nigerian languages. As of October 2026, one live Remotasks ad sought Igbo writers on a remote contract basis. These projects come and go, so check live ads regularly.
How much do remote customer support jobs pay people in Nigeria?
It varies by company, product and shift. Entry-level roles are often paid well below the US median of $44,770 a year (BLS, May 2025). Our customer support salary guide gives dollar and naira ranges with sources.
Key takeaways
- The best remote jobs for strong communicators are in support, sales, writing and editing, community management, tutoring and assistant work. Support, appointment setting and VA work are the most open to beginners.
- Match roles to your strongest communication type: written, spoken, persuasive or explaining.
- Fluent English is the starting point for Nigerian applicants, not what sets you apart. Samples, a second language and a niche are what make you stand out.
- Always read the ad's location line. "Remote" and "EMEA" do not mean the job accepts applicants in Nigeria.
- US pay figures are ceilings for comparison. Nigeria-based contractors are usually paid less, and sales pay often depends on commission.
- Reliable power, two internet connections and a good headset matter more in communication roles than in most remote work.
