How to become a virtual assistant from Nigeria

You can become a virtual assistant from Nigeria without a degree, and many people do. What gets you hired is proof that you can run someone else's admin without being chased: a tidy sample inbox, a calendar you've managed, a two-minute video of you explaining how you work.

The catch is pay and competition. Agencies hiring worldwide in October 2026 advertise $6 to $7 an hour, or about $1,000 a month, for full-time VA work, and you are up against applicants from the Philippines, Kenya and South Africa. The Nigerians who earn more pick a niche (real estate, e-commerce, coaches, podcasts) and learn the software that niche runs on.

What a remote virtual assistant does

A virtual assistant takes the small, repeated jobs off a busy person's plate so they can do the work only they can do. On a normal day that means clearing and labelling email, booking and moving meetings, sending follow-ups, updating a CRM, chasing invoices and keeping a task board current.

The job changes a lot with the client. A real estate VA might live in Bold Trail and GoHighLevel, sending appointment reminders to buyers. An e-commerce VA answers order emails and updates product listings. A coach's VA schedules discovery calls, posts to Instagram and sends the weekly newsletter.

Most VA roles are support roles, not decision-making ones. You follow the client's rules, flag anything unusual and keep a written record of what you did, because your client usually can't see you working.

A day in the role

  1. Work through the client's inbox at the start of your shift, archiving noise, drafting replies and flagging the three or four emails that need them personally
  2. Book, move and confirm meetings across time zones, then send calendar invites with the right Zoom or Google Meet link
  3. Update the CRM after every call or lead: new contact, stage change, next follow-up date
  4. Keep the task board in Asana, ClickUp or Trello current so the client can see what's done without asking
  5. Make simple graphics or social posts in Canva from a template the client approved
  6. Send an end-of-day update in Slack or email listing what you finished, what's waiting on someone and any problem you spotted

Skills you need

Core skills

Inbox and calendar management

This is the job's core. Clients judge you on whether their inbox gets lighter and whether meetings stop clashing across time zones.

Clear written English

Most of your work is emails and chat messages sent in someone else's name. A client will forgive slowness before they forgive a careless email to their customer.

Google Workspace and Microsoft 365

Gmail, Calendar, Docs and Sheets show up in almost every VA ad. Some clients run Outlook and Excel instead, so be comfortable in both.

CRM updates

Agency ads in 2026 name HubSpot, Salesforce, GoHighLevel and Bold Trail. You don't need to configure them, but you must enter clean data and log every touchpoint.

Task and project tools

Asana, ClickUp and Trello are how remote clients check your work. Learn to write tasks with owners, due dates and a clear next step.

Basic design in Canva

Many small-business clients want quick social graphics or a tidy PDF. It's often listed as a bonus skill that tips a decision your way.

Using AI tools carefully

Drafting replies or summarising long threads with ChatGPT or Claude saves time, but you must check every output before it leaves under the client's name.

Soft skills

Follow-through

A VA's value is that things stop slipping. If you say you'll chase the plumber's quote on Thursday, the client should never have to remind you.

Asking good questions early

Remote clients prefer one well-thought question with options over a task done wrongly. 'Do you want me to accept or propose 3pm instead?' saves both of you a day.

Discretion

You will see passwords, bank alerts, family matters and client data. Trust is the reason a client keeps you for years.

Tools you'll use

  • Google Workspace

Gmail filters and labels, shared calendars, Docs and Sheets. The default in most small-business VA work.

  • Microsoft 365

Outlook rules and Excel for clients in law, finance and older firms.

  • Calendly

Booking links so prospects can pick a slot without email ping-pong.

  • Slack

Where many clients expect daily updates and quick questions.

  • Asana, ClickUp or Trello

Task boards. Ads in 2026 name Asana and ClickUp most often for VA roles.

  • HubSpot or GoHighLevel

CRMs common with agencies, coaches and real estate teams. HubSpot has free training.

  • Canva

Social graphics, simple flyers and slide decks from brand templates.

  • Loom

Short screen recordings to show a client what you did, or to send your video introduction.

  • Bitwarden or 1Password

Password managers clients use to share logins safely. Never accept passwords over WhatsApp.

Where to learn

Career path

How remote virtual assistants usually move up, with the years it tends to take, and where people move sideways.

  1. Entry

    General virtual assistant

    0-1

Inbox, calendar, data entry and scheduling for one or two clients, often through an agency.

  2. Mid-level

    Niche virtual assistant

    1-3

Specialised work in one industry, such as real estate, e-commerce or legal intake, using that industry's software.

  3. Senior

    Executive assistant

    3+

Full support for one founder or executive, with more judgement and access.

  4. Lead

VA team lead or online business manager

    4+

Training and checking other VAs, or running a small business's back office end to end.

Sideways moves

  • Project or operations coordinator · 2+

A common move for VAs who enjoy keeping projects on track and want a salaried role.

Career path for a remote virtual assistant: General virtual assistant (0-1), then Niche virtual assistant (1-3), then Executive assistant (3+), then VA team lead or online business manager (4+). Sideways moves: Project or operations coordinator.

Getting hired from Nigeria

Most Nigerians get their first VA job through a staffing agency rather than a direct client. In October 2026, agencies such as Job Duck and Vitalis Outsourcing were advertising full-time VA and executive assistant roles open to every country. Their process is usually an application, a skills test, a recorded or live interview and a trial period, and Job Duck tells applicants to watch both email and WhatsApp for the next step.

Your application should show, not tell. Build a one-page portfolio (a Google Doc or Notion page is fine) with a before-and-after inbox screenshot using fake data, a sample weekly schedule across Lagos and New York time, and a Canva post you made. Some ads, such as Online Team Member's, ask for a video introduction with your CV, so record a calm two-minute Loom.

Set up the boring things before you apply. Most VA work runs on US Eastern hours, so 9am in New York is 2pm or 3pm in Lagos depending on daylight saving. Clients expect you online every working day, so you need an inverter or solar backup and two internet routes (a fixed line plus an MTN or Airtel MiFi). For pay, have a Payoneer or Grey USD account ready with your NIN and BVN details matching your bank. Agencies that pay through Deel or a payroll platform let you withdraw to those accounts.

Once you have six months with one client, ask for a short written reference and a LinkedIn recommendation. That is what moves you from $6 an hour agency work to direct clients who pay more.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Paying for a 'VA job placement' or 'starter kit'. Real agencies and clients never charge you to apply or to start work.
  • Calling yourself a general VA who can do everything. Clients scroll past that; 'real estate VA who knows GoHighLevel' gets replies.
  • Taking a full-time US role without testing your night-time power and internet. Your shift may run until 10pm or 11pm in Lagos.
  • Accepting logins over WhatsApp or SMS. Ask the client to share through a password manager so you're protected if anything goes wrong.
  • Sending AI-drafted emails without reading them. One wrong name or invented detail can end a contract.
  • Working without a written list of tasks and hours. If you are paid hourly, track time in a tool the client can see.

Questions people ask

Can I become a virtual assistant in Nigeria without a degree?

Yes. VA ads ask for strong written English, organisation and comfort with tools like Google Workspace, not a degree. A short portfolio of sample work and a clear video introduction count for more than certificates.

How much does a remote virtual assistant earn in Nigeria?

Full-time VA roles open to Nigerians in October 2026 advertised between about $10,000 and $14,600 a year, which is roughly $830 to $1,220 a month. Hourly ads started at $6 to $7. Niche and executive-level VAs earn more once they have references.

Do I need my own laptop and internet?

Yes. Almost every client expects your own computer, a headset, stable internet and a backup connection. Agencies rarely provide equipment for VAs outside the US.

Which time zone will I work in?

Usually US Eastern, which is five or six hours behind Lagos, so a 9am-5pm New York shift runs from 2pm or 3pm to 10pm or 11pm in Nigeria. UK clients are easier: London is on the same hour as Lagos from late March to late October and one hour behind in winter.

How do I get paid as a VA in Nigeria?

Agencies usually pay monthly or twice a month through a payroll platform like Deel, or by bank transfer to a USD account. Payoneer and Grey are common for direct clients. Check the payment method before you sign, because some freelancer platforms pay out only to PayPal.

Is virtual assistant work a scam?

The job is real, but scams copy it. Be wary of anyone who interviews you only on Telegram, asks you to pay for training or equipment, or sends you a cheque to buy supplies. Real VA employers have a website, a named recruiter and a written contract.
