How to become a remote executive assistant from Nigeria
Remote executive assistant jobs open to Nigerians do exist, and they pay better than general VA work, but almost none of them are true entry-level. Most 2026 ads want at least a year supporting an executive or business owner, and they test you on judgement, not typing speed.
The difference from a VA is depth. A VA might do tasks for several clients. An EA protects one person's time so completely that they stop thinking about logistics. If you have run the diary of a Nigerian MD, a pastor, a consultant or a busy doctor, you already have the raw experience; the work now is to show it in a way a foreign founder trusts.

What a remote executive assistant does
A remote executive assistant runs the operational side of one leader's working life. That covers the calendar, the inbox, meeting preparation, travel, expenses, and the long tail of follow-ups that a busy founder forgets.
The good ones think ahead. Before a board meeting, they've sent the deck, confirmed the dial-in and blocked 30 minutes for the founder to read the numbers. After it, they've written up the action items and put reminders against each owner's name.
Small-company EAs also pick up personal tasks. One October 2026 ad for a US law firm's EA listed dry cleaning, grocery pickups and family travel next to case scheduling. Some founders run their company on frameworks like EOS, and their EA keeps the weekly scorecards and quarterly priorities up to date.
A day in the role
- Review tomorrow's calendar every evening and fix clashes, missing links and meetings without an agenda before your executive sees them
- Triage the executive's inbox, answer routine requests in their voice and summarise anything that needs a decision
- Prepare briefing notes for important meetings: who's attending, last conversation, open issues, the one thing the executive wants out of it
- Take notes in leadership meetings and send out action items with owners and dates the same day
- Book flights, hotels and visas for trips, with a single itinerary document the executive can read on their phone
- Track expenses and submit receipts in the company's tool before the monthly deadline
- Chase people for deliverables the executive is waiting on, politely and on a schedule
Skills you need
Core skills
- Calendar strategy
An EA doesn't just book meetings. You defend focus time, group similar calls, leave travel buffers and know which meetings can move. Founders hire EAs to get their week back.
- Writing in someone else's voice
You'll reply to investors, customers and staff as your executive. Study how they write: greeting, length, sign-off, what they never say.
- Meeting preparation and minutes
Agendas before, action items after. This is where an EA's value becomes visible to the rest of the company.
- Travel and logistics
Flights, hotels, ground transport and visa requirements, often for trips you'll never take yourself. Accuracy here is noticed fast.
- Prioritisation
You'll get more requests for the executive's time than there is time. Knowing their priorities well enough to say 'not this week' is the senior skill.
- Task tracking
Notion, Jira, Asana or a simple Sheet. The executive should be able to see every open loop without asking you.
- Expense and invoice admin
Many EAs submit expenses, check invoices and work with the company's bookkeeper. Basic spreadsheet skills make this painless.
Soft skills
- Discretion
You'll see salaries, fundraising plans, health issues and personnel problems. Nothing leaves your desk. This is why EAs are trusted with more over time.
- Anticipation
The best EAs fix problems before the executive notices them. A delayed flight is rebooked before they land.
- Calm firmness
Saying no to a senior person who wants 30 minutes, on your executive's behalf, without offending them, is a daily task.
Tools you'll use
Google Workspace
Gmail, Calendar with multiple time zones showing, Docs and Sheets. The Jouster EA ad in 2026 named all of them.
Microsoft 365
Outlook, Teams and Excel for executives in larger or more traditional firms.
Slack
Where the team pings the EA for the executive's time.
Zoom and Google Meet
Setting up recurring calls, waiting rooms and recordings.
Notion or Jira
Task and project tracking. Startup EAs often keep the executive's priorities here.
Ninety.io
Software for companies run on EOS, used for scorecards, Rocks and meeting agendas.
Calendly or SavvyCal
Booking links for external meetings, with buffers and limits set by you.
Expensify or the company's finance tool
Receipt capture and expense reports.
ChatGPT or Claude
Drafting replies and summarising long threads. Ads increasingly ask EAs to suggest workflow improvements with AI.

Getting hired from Nigeria
Start by turning your current or past assistant work into proof. Write down two or three situations with numbers: '18 meetings a week across three time zones', 'planned a 40-person retreat in Abuja', 'cut my boss's unread email from 2,000 to under 50 in a month'. Those lines go on your CV and into interviews.
Then apply where EA roles open to Nigeria are posted. On Himalayas in October 2026, Jouster was hiring an EA to its CEO with worldwide eligibility at $12,000 to $18,000 a year, asking for overlap with GMT 10:00 to 18:00, which is 11am to 7pm in Lagos all year. Job Duck and Vitalis Outsourcing were placing executive assistants with US clients through structured, multi-stage processes. Read each ad's fine print. One 2026 EA ad marked 'open to all countries' asked for a Latin America base and a US visa in the description.
Founders often hire EAs through people they trust. Tell your network you're looking, post on LinkedIn about a specific thing you do well, and ask past bosses for a short written recommendation. A reference from a Nigerian MD who says you ran their life for three years carries weight.
Get the practical side right before day one: a quiet room, power backup that survives a full shift, a second internet line, and a USD receiving account such as Payoneer or Grey. Many agencies pay through Deel or a payroll platform, which withdraws to those accounts.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Applying for EA roles with no experience supporting a senior person. Start as an admin or VA and build references; it's faster than collecting rejections.
- Ignoring the location fine print. 'Open to all countries' on a job board can still hide a requirement like a US visa in the description.
- Being online but invisible. Executives notice silence. Send a short end-of-day note even when nothing went wrong.
- Guessing your executive's preferences. Keep a written 'how my boss likes things' document and update it after every correction.
- Using the executive's voice too freely. Agree in writing which emails you can send without approval and which need a check.
- Treating personal errands as beneath the job. In small US companies, family logistics are often part of the EA role.
Questions people ask
Can I become an executive assistant in Nigeria without a degree?
Yes. Remote EA ads in 2026 rarely ask for a degree. They ask for experience supporting a senior person, excellent English, and proof that you're organised and discreet. References carry more weight than certificates.
How much does a remote executive assistant earn in Nigeria?
Full-time EA roles open to Nigerians in October 2026 advertised about $12,000 to $18,000 a year. Plane's remote pay data for assistants in Nigeria has a median near $13,800 and a 90th percentile around $31,500.
What's the difference between a virtual assistant and an executive assistant?
A VA usually handles tasks for one or more clients. An EA supports one senior person in depth, with access to their inbox, calendar and confidential matters, and more room to make judgement calls.
Do I need to work at night for a US executive?
Usually part of your shift will be in the evening. US Eastern business hours run from 2pm or 3pm to 10pm or 11pm in Lagos. UK and European executives give you normal Nigerian daytime hours.
Which certification helps most for executive assistant jobs?
None is required, but a Microsoft Office Specialist exam or the Google Project Management certificate gives concrete proof of skills. Founders still decide mainly on interviews, tests and references.

- Virtual Assistant
A virtual assistant runs a client's admin from a distance: inbox, calendar, bookings, CRM updates, simple graphics and follow-ups. It is one of the most realistic remote jobs to land from Nigeria without a degree, but honest starting pay in 2026 agency ads is $6 to $7 an hour.
- Administrative Assistant
An administrative assistant keeps an office's paperwork, records, scheduling and correspondence in order. Remotely, Nigerians usually do this work for US law firms, clinics and small businesses through staffing agencies, under titles like legal assistant, intake specialist or admin coordinator, at roughly $1,060 to $1,220 a month in 2026 ads.
- Project Coordinator
A project coordinator keeps a project's moving parts on schedule: tracking tasks and deadlines, running meeting logistics, chasing updates and writing status reports for the project manager. Nigerians can do it remotely, and NGOs, research bodies and tech firms hiring across Africa are the most open employers, though many listings want some coordination experience first.
- Operations Manager
An operations manager runs the day-to-day machinery of a business: processes, people, suppliers, reporting and the numbers that show whether it all works. Remote operations roles are open to Nigerians, from $1,600-a-month office operations jobs for small US firms to six-figure CX operations posts, but almost all want proof that you've already run something.
