How to become a remote copywriter from Nigeria

Copywriting is selling in writing. The headline on a landing page, the three lines under a Facebook ad, the email that brings back customers who left something in their cart: someone was paid to write each of those, and plenty of them live in Lagos, Ibadan and Port Harcourt.

Foreign clients don't care whether you studied English or engineering. They care whether your words make people click, buy or sign up, and they'll find out with a short paid or unpaid test before they hire you.

What a remote copywriter does

A copywriter takes what a business sells and writes it so the right person wants it. That might be a landing page for a US accounting app, ten Facebook ad variations for a skincare brand, a welcome email sequence for an online course, or category pages for an e-commerce store.

The work starts with research: reading customer reviews, sales call notes and competitor pages to find the words customers already use. Then you draft, test, and rewrite. Good copywriters also think about where the words sit, working with designers on layout and with marketers on what gets measured.

A day in the role

  1. Read the brief and customer research, and write down the one thing the reader should do
  2. Mine Amazon reviews, Reddit threads and sales call transcripts for customer language
  3. Write headline and hook options, then pick the strongest few to develop
  4. Draft landing pages, emails or ad copy in Google Docs with comments for the client
  5. Revise based on feedback from the marketing lead, often left overnight from another time zone
  6. Check results from earlier campaigns (open rates, click rates, conversions) and adjust
  7. Keep a swipe file of ads and emails that worked

Skills you need

Core skills

Headlines and hooks

If the first line fails, nothing else gets read. Clients often test you on headlines alone.

Customer research

The best copy uses words customers already use. Reading reviews and transcripts beats guessing.

Persuasion structures

Problem-agitate-solution, before-after-bridge and features-to-benefits give you a starting point for any brief.

Writing for the format

A Meta ad, a landing page, a cold email and a product page each have different lengths, rules and reading patterns.

Editing your own work

Cutting is most of the job. Clients notice tight, clean copy and notice typos even more.

US or UK conventions

Spelling, idioms and tone differ. A US client will flag 'colour' and 'organisation', and vice versa.

Basic SEO

Website and e-commerce copy often needs to rank. Coalition Technologies' worldwide freelance copywriter role in 2026 was mostly SEO-friendly product and category pages.

Testing and data

Knowing what A/B tests, open rates and conversion rates mean lets you improve copy rather than defend it.

Soft skills

Taking feedback

Copy is rewritten by committee. Not taking it personally keeps clients coming back.

Asking sharp questions

A five-minute question about the target customer can save two rounds of rewrites.

Meeting deadlines across time zones

Campaigns launch on fixed dates. Late copy holds up designers and ad buyers.

Tools you'll use

  • Google Docs

Where most copy is drafted, commented on and approved

  • Grammarly or LanguageTool

Catches slips, and lets you switch between US and UK English

  • Hemingway Editor

Flags long sentences and passive voice

  • Notion

    Briefs, research and swipe files

  • Klaviyo or Mailchimp

Email platforms many e-commerce clients use; know the basics

  • Meta Ads Library

Free way to see live ads from any brand

  • Figma

Some teams ask you to write directly into page designs

  • AI assistants

Used for research and first drafts; 2026 job ads expect you to check and rewrite the output

Getting hired from Nigeria

Write samples for the work you want. Pick three real brands, ideally foreign ones in one niche, and write a landing page section, three ads and a short email for each. Label them as spec work. Put them in a clean Google Drive folder or a simple site, with a line explaining the goal of each piece.

Get one or two real results as early as possible. A Nigerian e-commerce store, a church's fundraising email or a friend's online course launch can all produce numbers: open rate, sales, sign-ups. One real number beats ten spec samples.

Apply on Upwork, Contra and LinkedIn, and on job boards like Himalayas and Remotive. In 2026 Coalition Technologies advertised a worldwide freelance copywriter role at $20,000 to $35,000 a year, paid per word (typically $0.034, up to $0.06), asking for a portfolio and saying it hires only skills-tested applicants. That's typical: expect a test.

When you get a test, follow the brief exactly, match the brand's voice and add a two-line note on why you wrote it that way. Don't write a whole new campaign when they asked for three headlines.

Get paid in dollars through Payoneer, Wise, Deel or platform withdrawals, and move money home through a domiciliary account or Grey. Keep a backup internet line; deadlines often fall at 9am in New York, which is 2pm in Lagos in US summer time.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Samples that only show long blog posts. Copywriting clients want ads, pages and emails
  • Writing in the wrong English. Check whether the client is US or UK and set your tools accordingly
  • Accepting $5 articles to 'build a portfolio'. It trains clients to see you as cheap and takes time from better pitches
  • Pasting AI drafts without rewriting. Clients and editors spot generic phrasing quickly
  • Never asking for results. Ask clients for open rates or conversion numbers so you can quote them later
  • Paying someone for a 'verified' Upwork account. It's against the rules and accounts get banned

Questions people ask

Can I become a copywriter in Nigeria without a degree?

Yes. Clients hire copywriters on samples, test tasks and results. Many successful remote copywriters studied something unrelated or didn't go to university.

How much do remote copywriters earn in Nigeria?

Plane estimates a median of about $32,100 a year for remote copywriters in Nigeria, with a very wide spread from about $5,900 to $90,300. A worldwide freelance role in October 2026 listed $20,000 to $35,000 a year, paid per word.

What's the difference between a copywriter and a content writer?

Copywriters write to get an action: buy, sign up, click. Content writers write to inform or attract readers, like blog posts and guides. Many people do both, but copy usually pays more per word.

Will AI replace copywriters?

AI now writes many first drafts, and job ads expect you to use it. Clients still pay people who understand the customer, test ideas and make the final copy sharper than the machine's.

Which niche should I pick?

Pick one where you understand the customer and where companies have money: e-commerce, software, finance, health and education are common. Your samples should match the niche.

How do I find my first client?

Small jobs on Upwork or Contra, a Nigerian business that needs a website rewrite, or a cold email with a short rewritten sample of their own page. Specific beats general every time.
