How to become a remote email marketing specialist from Nigeria
An email marketing specialist builds the emails and automated flows that turn subscribers into customers and customers into repeat buyers. It's a quiet, numbers-driven job that suits remote work, and online stores and app companies abroad regularly hire Nigerians to run it.
The skill that separates you from the crowd is not design or copy. It's knowing why mail lands in spam, how to segment a list and how to show the revenue each flow made.

What a remote email marketing specialist does
For an e-commerce brand, you'll run the welcome series, abandoned cart and checkout emails, post-purchase flows and weekly campaigns, usually in Klaviyo. For a SaaS or fintech company, the job is often called lifecycle or CRM marketing and covers onboarding, activation and win-back messages across email, push notifications, SMS and in-app messages in tools like Braze, Customer.io or Iterable.
Either way, the job is to send the right message to the right segment at the right time, keep the sending reputation healthy and report revenue or conversions honestly.
A day in the role
- Checking last night's campaign results: clicks, orders, unsubscribes and spam complaints
- Building a new segment, such as customers who bought once more than 90 days ago
- Editing an abandoned checkout flow and setting up an A/B test on the second email
- QA-ing a campaign on Gmail, Outlook and iPhone before it goes out
- Watching spam rate and domain reputation in Google Postmaster Tools
- Writing subject lines and briefing a designer on a template
- Pulling monthly email revenue and flow performance into a report
Skills you need
Core skills
- Automated flows
Flows such as welcome, abandoned cart and win-back make steady money without new effort each week. Every employer asks about them.
- Segmentation
Sending based on behaviour and purchase history is what lifts revenue per email and keeps unsubscribes down.
- Deliverability
SPF, DKIM, DMARC, list hygiene and the Gmail and Yahoo bulk-sender rules. Mail in spam earns nothing.
- Copywriting
Subject lines, preview text and short persuasive emails are written by you in most teams.
- Testing and analysis
A/B tests that measure clicks or revenue (not opens, which Apple Mail Privacy Protection inflates).
- Basic HTML for email
Not always required, but fixing a broken template without waiting for a developer is valuable.
- Consent and privacy rules
UK GDPR, PECR, CAN-SPAM and the Nigeria Data Protection Act shape who you may email and how.
Soft skills
- Attention to detail
A wrong segment or a broken discount code goes to thousands of people at once.
- Working across teams
You'll need design, product and customer support to give you what each email needs.
Tools you'll use
Klaviyo
The most common platform for Shopify stores. Free plan for small lists.
Mailchimp
Common at small businesses and non-profits.
HubSpot
B2B email and CRM, especially for SaaS.

Google Postmaster Tools
Free. Spam rate and domain reputation at Gmail.
Litmus or Email on Acid
Paid inbox previews across email clients.
MJML
Free framework for coding responsive emails.
Shopify
Where most e-commerce email data comes from.

Getting hired from Nigeria
Build flows before you apply. Open a free Klaviyo account, connect a test Shopify store or a friend's real one, and build a welcome series, an abandoned checkout flow and a post-purchase flow. Screenshot the flow diagrams and, if it's a real store, the revenue each one made. That portfolio is more convincing than any CV line.
E-commerce agencies and Shopify brands hire email freelancers constantly on Upwork and LinkedIn, and that's where most Nigerians start. Specialise quickly: "Klaviyo flows for skincare brands" sells better than "email marketing". Later, aim for lifecycle or CRM roles at apps and fintechs, which pay more and use Braze or Customer.io.
Worldwide ads with published pay do exist. In October 2026, MailerLite advertised two senior email roles on Himalayas at $50K to $70K a year, open to all countries with four hours of overlap with Central European Time, which is easy from Lagos. Most roles are contracts paid via Deel, Payoneer or Wise. If you'll be sending for US brands, make sure your evenings are covered by backup power, because launches often go out in US mornings.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Judging campaigns on open rates. Apple Mail Privacy Protection inflates them, so employers want clicks, orders and revenue per recipient.
- Ignoring deliverability. Gmail requires bulk senders to authenticate with SPF, DKIM and DMARC, offer one-click unsubscribe and keep spam rates below 0.3%. Not knowing this is a red flag in interviews.
- Showing pretty email designs with no results attached.
- Agreeing to mail a bought or scraped list. It damages the sender's reputation and breaks UK and EU consent rules.
- Staying on campaigns only. Flows and lifecycle strategy are where the better-paid roles are.
Questions people ask
Can I become an email marketing specialist in Nigeria without a degree?
Yes. Employers ask to see flows you've built and the results, plus your knowledge of platforms like Klaviyo or HubSpot. Both offer free certificates you can finish in a few weekends.
How much does a remote email marketer earn in Nigeria?
Junior and mid-level roles open worldwide paid about $1,000 to $2,150 a month in ads we saw in October 2026. Senior worldwide roles were advertised at $50K to $70K a year. See the salary page for sources.
Is Klaviyo or Mailchimp better to learn?
Klaviyo, if you want e-commerce work, because it's what most Shopify brands use. HubSpot is more common at B2B software companies. The concepts carry over, so learn one well first.
What is lifecycle marketing?
It's email plus other channels (push notifications, SMS, in-app messages) planned around the customer's stage, from sign-up to repeat purchase. It's usually more senior and better paid than campaign-only email roles.
Do I need to know HTML?
Basic HTML helps you fix templates and stand out, but many roles use drag-and-drop editors. Knowing how to test emails in Gmail, Outlook and dark mode is more important.

A digital marketing specialist runs a company's paid ads, email, social media and analytics to bring in leads and sales. You can do it fully remotely from Nigeria, mostly for small foreign companies and agencies, but they hire on campaign results, not certificates.

A performance marketing manager owns a company's paid acquisition budget across Google, Meta, TikTok and other channels, and is judged on the cost of each new customer. - Copywriter
A copywriter writes words that get people to act: ads, landing pages, product descriptions, emails, scripts and website copy. It's one of the easier creative jobs to do remotely from Nigeria because the work is all text, but clients judge you on samples and a writing test, not on your English grades.
- Marketing Manager
A marketing manager sets a company's marketing plan and budget, leads the people and agencies doing the work, and answers for the results in leads, customers or revenue. Nigerians do this remotely for startups, agencies and companies expanding into Africa, though most get there after years of hands-on marketing.
