How to become a remote performance marketing manager from Nigeria
A performance marketing manager decides where a company's paid marketing money goes and proves what it bought. Think of it as the step after PPC or paid social specialist: less time inside one ad platform, more time on budgets, customer acquisition cost, testing and arguments with finance.
Remote roles open to Nigerians exist, mostly at fintechs, apps, e-commerce brands and SaaS companies, and Nigerian growth marketers who scaled local fintech or betting apps have real, transferable experience. Nobody starts here, though. Expect to spend three to five years running campaigns yourself first.

What a remote performance marketing manager does
The job is to buy customers at a price the business can afford. That means setting targets with finance (cost per acquisition, payback period, return on ad spend), splitting the budget across channels, running a steady stream of creative tests, and checking that the numbers in Ads Manager match what actually happened in the bank account or app.
In a small company you'll still run the campaigns. In a bigger one you'll manage specialists or agencies and spend more time on measurement: lift tests, holdouts and marketing mix models. For app companies, much of the work is mobile measurement after Apple's App Tracking Transparency rules, which require user permission before an app can track people or access the advertising identifier.
A day in the role
- Reviewing yesterday's spend, new customers and cost per acquisition by channel
- Deciding whether to move budget from a saturating Meta campaign to Google or TikTok
- Briefing designers and UGC creators on next week's batch of test ads
- Checking attribution data in an MMP such as AppsFlyer or Adjust against internal numbers
- Planning a geo holdout test with the data team
- Updating the monthly forecast for finance
- Writing a short weekly growth update for the leadership team
Skills you need
Core skills
- Media buying on at least two platforms
You need to have done it yourself, usually Meta plus Google, to manage others doing it.
- Unit economics
CAC, lifetime value, payback and contribution margin. These decide how much you're allowed to spend.
- Measurement and attribution
Platforms over-report. Knowing how to triangulate with blended numbers and tests is what makes a manager trustworthy.
- Incrementality testing
Geo holdouts and lift studies show whether ads caused the sales. Senior interviews ask about them.
- Creative strategy
With targeting largely automated, the ads themselves are the biggest lever left on Meta and TikTok.
- Forecasting and budgeting
Finance will ask what next quarter's money will buy. You need a defensible answer with assumptions.
- SQL or strong spreadsheet skills
Pulling cohort data yourself is faster than waiting for the data team.
Soft skills
- Honesty with numbers
Claiming credit for sales the ads didn't cause gets found out eventually.
- Managing agencies and specialists
Many managers run a team of freelancers in several countries.
- Working with finance
Budget is approved by people who don't trust marketing dashboards. Speak their language.

Getting hired from Nigeria
You get this job by showing you've spent money well at scale. Before applying, write up two growth case studies with real figures: monthly spend, CAC before and after, payback period and one test that changed the budget. Round the numbers if they're confidential, but keep them honest.
Nigerian experience counts. If you scaled user acquisition for a lending app, a payments startup or an e-commerce business in Lagos, international fintechs and apps will be interested, especially those selling in Africa. Emphasise measurement, because that's where many candidates are weak.
Remote roles open to Nigeria are on Himalayas, LinkedIn and company careers pages. One October 2026 ad from Nectar Life for a Growth Marketing Manager (paid media and Klaviyo) at $55K to $70K plus bonus was open worldwide except the US, Canada, the UK and Western Europe, which tells you companies are actively hiring in regions like ours. Many US-focused roles want overlap with US Eastern or Pacific hours, so be honest about which you can do every day.
Most offers are contracts or employer-of-record jobs through Deel or Remote.com. Because you'll control live budgets, employers will ask about your power and internet backup. Have a specific answer.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Presenting platform-reported ROAS as truth. Senior interviewers will ask how you know the ads caused the sales.
- Applying for manager roles with experience on only one channel or small budgets.
- Scaling spend without watching marginal CAC. Average numbers hide the point where extra spend stops paying.
- Ignoring creative. Many growth candidates talk about bidding and audiences when the bigger lever is the ads themselves.
- Taking a growth role at a startup whose product doesn't retain customers. No acquisition skill fixes that, and you'll carry the blame.
Questions people ask
Can I become a performance marketing manager in Nigeria without a degree?
Yes. Employers hire on results: budgets you've managed, CAC improvements and tests you've run. A degree in economics or statistics helps with the analytical side but isn't required.
How much does a remote performance marketing manager earn in Nigeria?
Ads we saw in 2026 ranged from $2,500 a month for a mid-level performance marketer to $55K to $70K a year plus bonus for a growth marketing manager open to Africa. See the salary page for sources.
What's the difference between performance marketing and growth marketing?
Performance marketing focuses on paid acquisition. Growth marketing often also covers onboarding, referrals, lifecycle and product experiments. Many job ads use the titles interchangeably.
How do I move from PPC specialist to performance marketing manager?
Add a second channel, take ownership of a budget target, and learn measurement properly. Running one incrementality test and writing it up is a strong step.
Do I need to know SQL?
It helps a lot, especially at apps and fintechs. Many managers pull cohort and revenue data themselves to check what the ad platforms report.

An email marketing specialist builds the campaigns and automated flows (welcome, abandoned cart, onboarding, win-back) that turn subscribers into paying customers. It's well suited to remote work from Nigeria, with steady demand from online stores and app companies, and the best-paid roles are called lifecycle or CRM marketing.
- Marketing Manager
A marketing manager sets a company's marketing plan and budget, leads the people and agencies doing the work, and answers for the results in leads, customers or revenue. Nigerians do this remotely for startups, agencies and companies expanding into Africa, though most get there after years of hands-on marketing.
