How to Get a Remote Customer Service Job Without Experience
How Nigerians can get a remote customer service job without experience: entry-level roles, eligibility checks, CV tips, assessments and real pay ranges.

Yes, you can get a remote customer service job without experience from Nigeria. The usual route is to target the small group of employers whose ads say experience is optional, then show proof of the skills they actually test: written English, typing, patience with upset customers and a working setup. Most beginners don't fail because they lack a past support job. They fail because they apply to ads that exclude Nigeria, send a generic CV, or fall at the typing or internet test.
This guide is for school leavers, graduates, corps members and career changers. It covers which entry-level roles are realistic, how to read "Africa" and "worldwide" in an ad, what to put on your CV when you've never had a support job, how to apply, and how to pass the assessments. We use three real ads we checked on 27 October 2026 as examples. Read them as examples of how ads work, not as a list of open jobs.
Quick answer
To get a remote customer service job with no experience, look for ads that say customer service experience is "a plus" or "optional" and that list Nigeria as an eligible location. Build evidence of transferable skills such as handling customers at a shop, POS stand or family business. Prepare for typing, writing, language and internet-speed tests. Then apply with a short, tailored CV and, where asked, a short intro video.
What "no experience" really means in remote customer service ads
Very few remote customer service ads say "no experience needed" in plain words. Most fall into three groups, and you only have a realistic chance in two of them.
| What the ad says | What it means for a beginner |
|---|---|
| "Experience is a plus" or "optional" | Apply. They will train you if you pass the tests |
| "1+ year" or "proven experience" | A stretch. Apply only if your transferable experience is strong |
| "2 to 5 years", "senior", "team lead" | Skip for now |
A good example of the first group is 5CA, a remote customer experience company. Its English Gaming Support Agent ad on its 5CA careers page listed "Remote - Nigeria" among a handful of eligible countries and said experience in a customer service environment was optional, as of October 2026. What 5CA wanted instead was C1-level English, real knowledge of video games, and a computer and internet connection that passed its tests.
That's the pattern with beginner-friendly support jobs. The employer drops the experience requirement, then filters harder on language, speed and equipment. You make up for no job history by being clearly ready on those points.
The second group needs judgement. An iClosed Customer Support Representative ad, posted on 22 October 2026, asked for "1+ year in customer support or a similar customer communication role". That last phrase matters. Two years running customer chats for a family business or an online store can count as "similar customer communication" if you describe it honestly and specifically.
Entry-level remote customer service roles beginners can target
The job titles vary, but the entry-level roles that hire beginners look a lot alike. They involve answering customers by chat, email or phone, using a help desk tool, and following a script or knowledge base.
| Role | What you do | Why it suits beginners |
|---|---|---|
| Chat or email support agent | Answer written questions in tools like Intercom or Zendesk | Written English matters more than accent or past jobs |
| Gaming or app support agent | Help players or app users with accounts and bugs | Hobby knowledge can stand in for work history |
| Call centre or customer follow-up agent | Make or take calls from a script | Training is usually built in |
| Seasonal or part-time support agent | Cover busy periods such as holidays | Short contracts take less risk on new hires |
| Customer service administrator | Update orders, refunds and records | Organised, accurate work counts more than experience |
Many of these jobs come through outsourcing companies (often called BPOs, business process outsourcing firms) and staffing agencies that place remote workers with clients in the UK, US or Europe. Others come from software startups that hire their own support teams. Agencies tend to take more beginners, because they run their own training.
If you'd rather not take calls, written-only roles are a separate route covered in our guide to non-voice customer support jobs for beginners. For the full picture of the career, including tools, courses and progression, see the customer service representative career guide.
Check you're eligible before you apply from Nigeria
Being "remote" doesn't make a job open to Nigerians. Before you write a single line of a cover note, find the location line and read it carefully. The three ads we checked show why.
- 5CA (gaming support): The ad listed specific countries, and Nigeria was one of them. That is the clearest kind of eligibility you'll see.
- Remote Recruitment (customer service agent): An aggregator tagged this Remote Recruitment ad as "Remote from Africa", but the description said "from anywhere in South Africa" and the pay was in rand. A Nigerian applying would be wasting their time.
- iClosed (SaaS support): The ad said "Remote (Worldwide)", while the page data listed specific countries. When the two don't match, check the country list or ask the recruiter before you spend an evening on a video.
The rule: the employer's own wording in the description beats any label an aggregator adds. Our planned guide on checking whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents goes through this in more detail.
Also check how you'd be hired. Many beginner support roles are contractor arrangements, not employment, which changes your tax, leave and notice. Our page on contractor versus employee arrangements explains the difference.
Experience you already have (and how to show it)
"No experience" usually means no formal support job. Most Nigerians applying for these roles have dealt with customers in some way. The task is to name it plainly and attach a number to it.
Transferable experience that counts
- Selling or serving at a shop, supermarket, pharmacy or POS stand
- Handling orders and complaints on WhatsApp or Instagram for a family business or your own side hustle
- Ushering, protocol or welfare work in church, mosque or a student association
- Tutoring, or front-desk duty in a school office
- NYSC community development (CDS) work that involved members of the public
- Answering classmates' or customers' questions in a busy online group you help run
Each of these involves what support teams care about: staying calm with an upset person, explaining something simply, and following up. What hiring managers can't see is the scale, so give it to them. "Replied to customer messages for my mum's fabric business" is weak. "Handled about 30 WhatsApp enquiries a day for a fabric business, including order changes and delivery complaints" is evidence. Only use numbers you can honestly stand behind in an interview.
Build proof in four to eight weeks
If your transferable experience is thin, you can build some quickly.
- Learn one help desk tool. HubSpot Academy's Service Hub certification course is free to watch (about 2 hours 24 minutes of video, as of October 2026) and covers help desks, knowledge bases and customer feedback. Taking the final certification needs a paid HubSpot subscription for the practical exercises, so finish the course and list it as "completed course" unless you actually hold the certificate.
- Add technical basics if you want tech support later. The Google IT Support Professional Certificate on Coursera needs no prior experience and is designed to take three to six months. Coursera offers financial aid for it, which you can apply for on the programme page.
- Make a small portfolio of sample replies. Write five replies to realistic customer messages (a late delivery, a double charge, a locked account, a refund request, an angry review). Save them as a Google Doc you can link from your CV.
- Practise typing every day. Many employers set a typing test. Free sites let you measure words per minute and accuracy; track both. Our planned guide on improving typing speed for support jobs covers drills.
- Volunteer support work. Moderating or answering questions for a community group, school alumni page or small online business gives you a referee who can speak about your work.
The setup employers test: computer, internet and power
Beginner support roles are often strict about equipment, because a new agent who keeps dropping off chats costs the team money. The 5CA ad is a good example of how specific this can get. As of October 2026, it asked for:
- Windows 11 and at least 8 GB of RAM
- A processor and graphics card above stated benchmark scores
- Internet of at least 15 Mb/s download and 15 Mb/s upload, with latency under 120 ms
- A smartphone recent enough for two-factor authentication
5CA said it tests candidates on internet speed and hardware, not just language. Run a speed test at the time of day you'd actually work, not at 3am when the network is quiet.
In Nigeria, the setup that keeps you employed usually includes:
- Backup power. An inverter with batteries, or solar, so a NEPA outage in the middle of a shift doesn't end your session. A generator alone is noisy on calls.
- Two internet sources. A main connection (fibre, a 4G/5G router or Starlink) plus a MiFi or phone hotspot on a different network.
- A headset with a noise-cancelling microphone for any voice work.
- A quiet corner. Generators, hawkers and family noise will come through on calls.
You don't need all of this before you apply. You need it before your first shift, and you should be honest in interviews about what you have.
What to put on a customer service CV with no experience
Recruiters for entry-level support roles skim a CV in seconds, looking for three things: good written English, evidence you can deal with people, and proof you can work remotely. Keep it to one page.
A simple structure that works for beginners:
- Name, city and contact details. "Lagos, Nigeria (WAT, UTC+1)" tells the reader your time zone at a glance. Add your LinkedIn and a link to your sample replies.
- Two-line summary. Say what role you want and what you bring.
- Customer-facing experience. Put shop, POS, family business, volunteer and NYSC roles here, with numbers.
- Skills and tools. Typing speed (only a figure you've measured), Google Workspace, any help desk tool you've practised on, languages and your level.
- Training. Courses you've actually completed, with the provider's name.
- Remote setup. One line: backup power, two internet connections, headset.
- Education. Keep it short.
Example (hypothetical): a summary line for a graduate with no support job could read, "Economics graduate applying for chat and email support roles. Two years answering customer orders and complaints for a family retail business on WhatsApp, typing at a measured 60 words a minute, available for UK hours."
Leave out a photo, your date of birth, marital status and state of origin. International employers don't expect them, and some will screen them out. For a full layout with samples, see our planned guide on writing a CV for remote customer support jobs.
How to apply for remote customer service jobs without experience
Sending 50 identical applications usually gets fewer interviews than ten careful ones. Use this sequence.
- Filter for eligibility first. Search for "customer support", "customer service", "chat support" and "call centre" with Nigeria, Africa, EMEA or worldwide. Open every ad and confirm the country line.
- Sort by experience wording. Put "experience is a plus" ads at the top of your list, "1+ year or similar" next.
- Check the hours. UK hours (9am to 5pm in London) are 10am to 6pm in Lagos in winter and the same as Lagos in summer. US Eastern hours start at 2pm or 3pm Lagos time and finish late at night. The iClosed ad ran shifts between 8am and 10pm Central European Time, which is the same as Lagos time in winter. Only apply for shifts you can actually keep.
- Tailor the top third of your CV. Copy the tools the ad names (Intercom, Zendesk, Freshdesk, Slack) into your skills section only if you've used or practised them.
- Do exactly what the ad asks. The iClosed ad asked for a Loom intro video of up to five minutes and said applications without one wouldn't be reviewed. Instructions like that are a first test of whether you read carefully.
- Write a short note, not an essay. Three to five sentences: the role, why you fit, one piece of evidence, your availability in their time zone.
- Track every application. A simple spreadsheet with the company, date, link and stage stops you applying twice or missing a test deadline.
Example (hypothetical): a 90-second intro video outline
- 10 seconds: your name, that you're in Lagos, and the role you're applying for.
- 30 seconds: one customer story. For example, a buyer who received the wrong item, how you calmed them down, and what you did to fix it.
- 20 seconds: your setup (inverter, two internet connections, headset) and the shifts you can work.
- 20 seconds: why this company's product interests you.
- 10 seconds: thank them, and say you're ready for the skills test.
Record it in good light, with your face clearly visible, in a quiet room. Speak at a normal pace. Clear English matters more than a polished accent.
Passing remote customer service assessments
For beginners, the assessment is where you win the job. 5CA described its process as language or skills-based testing followed by an interview, and said it tests language, internet speed, hardware and cognitive ability. iClosed listed a short practical skills test before the interview. Expect some mix of the following.
| Test | What they check | How to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Typing test | Words per minute and accuracy | Daily timed practice; accuracy first |
| Written reply | Tone, grammar, solving the problem | Practise your five sample replies |
| Language test | Spoken and written English level | Record yourself, read aloud, write daily |
| Cognitive test | Reasoning under time pressure | Timed practice tests, steady pace |
| Role-play or mock call | Calm, empathy, following a process | Rehearse with a friend playing an angry customer |
| System and speed check | Hardware, internet, latency | Test at your real shift time |
Some ads give language levels such as B2 or C1. These come from the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). C1 roughly means you can write and speak fluently and flexibly at work. B2 means you can hold a clear, detailed conversation without much strain. Many Nigerian graduates already work at this level; the test checks whether your writing shows it.
Example (hypothetical): a strong written reply
Customer message: "I was charged twice for my order and nobody has replied in two days. This is ridiculous."
A reply that scores well: "Hi Sarah, I'm sorry you were charged twice and then left waiting, that's frustrating. I can see both payments on your order. I've refunded the duplicate charge today, and it should reach your card within five working days. I'll check back on Friday to confirm it has arrived. If anything else looks wrong, reply here and I'll pick it up personally."
It acknowledges the problem, takes ownership, gives a specific action and timeline, and promises a follow-up. It contains no Nigerian expressions like "kindly do the needful" and doesn't shift the blame. Our planned guide on passing a remote customer service assessment covers each test type, and the customer service representative interview questions help with the interview that follows.
What entry-level remote customer service pays
Entry-level pay for Nigeria-based agents is usually well below what support staff earn in the US or UK. Here are a few reference points, all as of October 2026:
- The iClosed ad offered $1,200 to $1,700 a month, depending on experience (about ₦1.63 million to ₦2.32 million a month at ₦1,362 to $1, the CBN NFEM weighted average for 23 October 2026). This was a range published in a single job ad, for a role that asked for at least a year of similar experience. It's not a market average.
- The Remote Recruitment ad for South Africa offered R23,000 to R25,000 a month. It's a reminder that pay is often set for the country you live in.
- The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median pay for customer service representatives at $44,770 a year in May 2025, with a high school diploma as the typical entry education and two to four weeks of on-the-job training. This is a US benchmark for US-based workers, not what a remote employer will offer someone in Nigeria.
Many beginner ads, including 5CA's, don't publish pay at all, so ask during the first call. Our customer service representative salary guide gives fuller ranges. Once you're paid, our guide to receiving dollar payments in Nigeria compares the apps and their fees.
Red flags in beginner customer service ads
Scammers target entry-level customer service seekers because they know beginners are eager and less likely to question odd steps. Walk away if you see:
- A "training fee", "starter kit" or "registration fee" before you start. Legitimate employers don't charge you to work for them.
- Interviews held only by text on Telegram or WhatsApp, with no video call and no company email address.
- "Customer service" that turns out to be commission-only selling, or "tasks" where you deposit money before you can withdraw earnings.
- Requests for your BVN, bank login or a copy of your passport before any interview or written offer.
- Pay far above the ranges in this guide for a role that asks for nothing.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get a remote customer service job with no experience in Nigeria?
Yes, but only with employers that hire beginners and accept applicants living in Nigeria. Look for ads that call experience "a plus" or "optional" and list Nigeria as an eligible location, then prepare well for the tests. Expect to apply to many roles before you get a first offer.
Do remote customer service jobs require a degree?
Usually not. The BLS lists a high school diploma as the typical entry education for customer service representatives in the US, and the remote ads we checked asked for English level and skills rather than a degree. Some Nigerian employers and agencies still ask for a degree or HND, so read each ad.
What typing speed do I need for remote chat support?
There's no single standard, and many ads don't state one. Accuracy matters as much as speed, because a fast reply full of errors fails a written test. Measure yourself on a free typing site, practise daily, and put only your measured figure on your CV.
Are entry-level remote customer service jobs paid in dollars?
Some are. The iClosed ad we checked offered $1,200 to $1,700 a month, as of October 2026. Others pay in the currency of the country they target, and Nigerian companies hiring remotely usually pay in naira. Check the currency and whether pay is gross or net before you accept.
How long does it take to get a first remote customer service job?
It varies too much to give a reliable timeline. Your English, your setup and how many eligible ads you find all affect it. Applicants who build sample replies, practise typing and apply carefully to eligible ads tend to reach the assessment stage sooner than those who mass-apply.
Is customer service a good first remote job for a career change?
Often, yes. Support roles teach you a company's product and customers, and many people move from support into customer success, sales, operations or technical support. Our role guide for customer service representatives maps the usual next steps.
Should I pay for a customer service course before applying?
No, not at the start. Free options such as HubSpot Academy's Service Hub course are enough to learn how help desks work, and Coursera offers financial aid on the Google IT Support certificate. A course helps, but your sample replies, typing and setup carry more weight with employers.
Key takeaways
- Beginner-friendly remote customer service ads usually swap the experience requirement for tough tests on English, typing, internet and hardware.
- Always confirm that Nigeria is eligible in the employer's own wording. Labels like "Africa" or "worldwide" can mislead.
- Shop, POS, family business, church and NYSC work all count as customer experience when you describe them with honest numbers.
- A one-page CV, a portfolio of sample replies and a short intro video do more than a pile of certificates.
- Entry-level pay for Nigeria-based agents is far below US benchmarks. Check the currency, the hiring arrangement and the shift hours before you accept.
- Never pay a fee to get or start a customer service job.
