How to Write a CV for Remote Customer Support Jobs (From Nigeria)
Write a remote customer support CV that passes ATS checks and gets shortlisted from Nigeria: layout, metrics, tools, sample lines and a tailoring example.

A good CV for remote customer support jobs fits on one page, uses a plain single-column layout and leads with proof: the channels you've handled, the tools you've used, and numbers such as tickets a day or customer satisfaction scores. It also says clearly where you live and which hours you can work, because a support team abroad hires you to cover a shift.
Most Nigerian applicants lose out on things they can fix. Their CV is a two-column Canva design that the employer's software can't read. Their experience reads like a job description instead of results. Or the hiring manager can't tell whether a Lagos-based applicant can work 5am to 5pm. This guide shows you how to fix each of these: layout, summary, metrics, tools, wording if you're new to support, and a worked example of tailoring a CV to a real ad. Each section includes sample lines you can adapt.
Quick answer
To write a CV for remote customer support jobs, use a one-page, single-column Word or PDF file with no tables, columns or photos. Put your city, "Nigeria (WAT, UTC+1)" and the hours you can work at the top. Write experience bullets that show volume, speed and quality (tickets a day, response time, CSAT). List the channels and help desk tools you've used, and copy the exact skills wording from each ad.
What a remote support hiring manager looks for on your CV
A support manager reading your CV is trying to answer four questions. Your CV should answer each one without making them hunt.
- Can this person write clearly? For chat and email support, your CV is your first writing sample. Typos, mixed tenses and long paragraphs count against you more here than in most roles.
- Have they handled real customer volume? Managers want to know whether you can cope with a queue: how many conversations, on which channels, at what quality.
- Can they cover our hours? A team needs coverage. If your CV doesn't say when you can work, the manager has to guess, and many won't bother.
- Will they need much training on our tools? Experience with Zendesk, Freshdesk, Intercom, Gorgias, HubSpot or Salesforce Service Cloud shortens onboarding.
A degree is rarely the deciding factor. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics says a high school diploma is the typical entry requirement for customer service representatives and that training usually happens on the job over a few weeks (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook). That's a US benchmark, but it matches what many remote support ads ask for: evidence of skill, not credentials. Some ads do ask for a degree, so read each one.
For the role itself (skills, courses and how people get started), see our customer support specialist career guide.
Layout: make your CV readable by applicant tracking systems
Most international companies receive applications through an applicant tracking system (ATS) such as Greenhouse, Lever, Workable, Ashby or BambooHR. The ATS reads your CV and fills in your profile, and recruiters then search and filter those profiles. If the parse fails, your details may be missing or jumbled.
Greenhouse's own help centre lists the things that make CV parsing fail: files larger than 2.5MB, CVs uploaded as images instead of a .docx or .pdf, complex layouts with tables, headers and footers, name and contact details placed in a header, footer or text box, columned layouts, and graphics, photos or word art (Greenhouse Support). Other ATS products differ, but if you design for the strictest case you're covered everywhere.
Format rules that work everywhere
- One column, top to bottom. No sidebars, skill bars or star ratings.
- Your name and contact details in the main body, not in the Word header.
- A standard font (Calibri, Arial or Georgia) at 10 to 12 points.
- Plain section headings: Summary, Experience, Skills, Education, Certifications.
- Save as .docx or a text-based PDF (one where you can highlight the words). Never upload a photo or screenshot of your CV.
- Keep the file well under 2.5MB. A text-only CV is usually under 200KB.
- One page if you have under about eight years of experience; two pages only if every line earns its place.
Canva templates are the biggest offender. If you like Canva for its looks, keep that version for sending by email, and use a plain Word version for portals.
Recommended section order
| Section | What goes in it |
|---|---|
| Header | Name, city, Nigeria, time zone, email, phone, LinkedIn |
| Summary | 2 to 3 lines: channels, tools, results, hours |
| Experience | Roles with 3 to 5 result-focused bullets each |
| Skills and tools | Help desk tools, channels, languages, typing speed |
| Certifications | Only relevant, real ones with the provider |
| Education | Degree, HND, OND or SSCE, with year |
Experienced agents put Experience before Skills. If you're new to support, you can move a short "Relevant projects" section above Experience (more on this below).
The top of the CV: header, location line and summary
Header: say where you are and when you can work
This is the line Nigerian applicants most often get wrong, either by hiding their location or by leaving out hours. Hiding it doesn't help: eligibility is checked later anyway, and a mismatch wastes everyone's time. State it with confidence and add availability.
Example (hypothetical):
- Adaeze Okafor
- Ibadan, Nigeria (WAT, UTC+1) | Available for UK, EU and US Eastern morning shifts
- adaeze.okafor@gmail.com | +234 803 000 0000 | linkedin.com/in/adaezeokafor
Use a professional email (name-based, not "sweetgirl2001"). Write your phone number in international format with +234. Leave out your photo, date of birth, state of origin, religion and marital status: international employers don't need them, and some companies prefer not to receive them at all.
Get the time zones right before you promise anything. Lagos is on WAT, UTC+1, all year. It's one hour ahead of London in winter (GMT, from 25 October 2026) and the same time as London in summer (BST). US Eastern is six hours behind Lagos in winter (EST, from 1 November 2026) and five hours behind in summer. A US Eastern 9am to 5pm shift in winter runs from 3pm to 11pm in Lagos.
Summary: three lines, all evidence
A support summary should name your channels, your tools, one or two results and your hours. Skip adjectives such as "passionate", "hardworking" and "go-getter", which every applicant uses.
Example (hypothetical), experienced agent:
"Customer support specialist with three years on email and live chat for a fintech app, handling 60 to 80 tickets a day in Freshdesk with a 94% CSAT. Comfortable with refunds, KYC (know-your-customer) queries and escalations to engineering. Based in Lagos (WAT) and available for UK and EU hours."
Example (hypothetical), career changer from banking:
"Former bank customer service officer moving into remote chat and email support. Served 40+ walk-in and phone customers a day on account issues, card disputes and complaints, with zero audit findings across two reviews. Completed Zendesk-focused training and practice ticket replies. Based in Abuja and available for UK hours."
Every number in those examples is made up for illustration. Use your own, and only ones you can explain in an interview.
Turn support work into numbers: the metrics to use
Support teams are measured constantly, so support managers think in numbers. If you've worked in support, you've probably seen your stats on a dashboard or a weekly report. Put them on your CV.
| Metric | What it means | How to write it |
|---|---|---|
| CSAT | Customer satisfaction score from post-chat surveys | "Kept CSAT at 95% over 12 months" |
| FRT | First response time: how fast you reply first | "Cut average first response from 4 hours to 50 minutes" |
| AHT | Average handle time for one conversation or call | "AHT of 6 minutes on chat, below team target of 8" |
| FCR | First contact resolution: solved without follow-up | "Resolved 80% of tickets on first contact" |
| Volume | Tickets, chats or calls handled | "Handled 70 tickets a day across email and chat" |
| QA score | Internal quality review of your replies | "Averaged 97% on weekly QA reviews" |
| Concurrency | Chats handled at the same time | "Managed 3 live chats at once" |
If your last job didn't track these, don't invent figures. Use counts you can honestly estimate and defend ("about 30 customer calls a day"), or describe the outcome ("handled all refund requests for a 2,000-customer online store"). An interviewer who asks "how was CSAT measured?" will quickly expose a made-up number, and support managers do ask.
Before and after: rewriting experience bullets
Weak bullets describe duties. Strong bullets show the result, the volume or the tool.
| Before | After |
|---|---|
| Responsible for answering customer emails | Answered 50 to 70 customer emails a day in Zendesk, keeping first response under 2 hours |
| Handled complaints | Resolved delivery and refund complaints, cutting escalations to the manager by about a third in six months |
| Good with customers | Rated "excellent" on 92% of post-chat surveys across 1,800 chats |
| Updated records | Logged every call outcome in HubSpot, so the sales team could follow up without asking again |
| Trained new staff | Wrote 15 help-centre articles and trained 4 new agents on refund rules |
Start each bullet with a different strong verb: answered, resolved, reduced, wrote, trained, escalated, documented, migrated. Keep bullets to one or two lines.
Tools, channels and skills: what to list and how
Ads for remote support often name specific tools, and an ATS search may filter on them. List tools in a dedicated section, grouped so a human can scan them. For a wider look at the software itself, our planned guide to customer service tools for remote support agents covers what each one does.
| Group | Examples to list (only if true) |
|---|---|
| Help desk and chat | Zendesk, Freshdesk, Intercom, Gorgias, Help Scout, Zoho Desk |
| CRM | HubSpot, Salesforce Service Cloud |
| Collaboration | Slack, Google Workspace, Microsoft Teams, Notion, Jira |
| Phone | Aircall, RingCentral, Five9, Talkdesk |
| Channels | Email, live chat, phone, WhatsApp, social media DMs |
| Languages | English (native or fluent), French, Portuguese, Arabic |
| Typing | Speed in words per minute from a test you can repeat |
If you have only used a tool in a trial account or a course, say so honestly ("Zendesk: trained, not used in production"). That's still more useful to a manager than leaving it out. If you mention typing speed, use a figure from a timed test you could repeat live, because some employers do test it. Our planned guide on improving typing speed for support jobs covers how to practise.
Certifications: helpful, rarely required
A certificate won't replace experience, but it shows you've learned the tool and the vocabulary. Zendesk created the Zendesk Customer Service Professional Certificate with LinkedIn Learning. It's a set of six courses on customer service skills, and you need LinkedIn Learning access to take it (Zendesk newsroom, February 2023). Check the current LinkedIn Learning price or free-trial terms before you sign up. List certificates with the provider and year, for example: "Zendesk Customer Service Professional Certificate, LinkedIn Learning, 2026."
Leave out unrelated certificates, such as a generic "digital marketing" course from five years ago, unless the ad asks for them.
If you have no customer support job yet
Plenty of Nigerian work counts as customer-facing experience, even if the title wasn't "support agent". The trick is to describe it in support language.
| Your experience | How to frame it for support |
|---|---|
| Bank teller or customer service officer | Account queries, complaints, disputes, compliance, queue volume |
| POS or mobile money agent | Failed-transaction issues, cash reconciliation, customer trust |
| Shop or supermarket attendant | Returns, product questions, handling upset customers |
| WhatsApp or Instagram business | Answering DMs, order tracking, written replies, refunds |
| Church, mosque or campus admin | Member enquiries, records, scheduling, announcements |
| NYSC CDS or SIWES placement | Front desk, public enquiries, data entry, written reports |
Then add a short "Relevant projects" section to show written support skill directly. Some ideas:
- Write five sample replies to realistic tickets (a late delivery, a double charge, a password reset, an angry customer, a feature request) and keep them in a public Google Doc you can link to.
- Write two short help-centre articles for a product you use, such as "How to reset your PIN on [app name]".
- Volunteer to answer customer messages for a small business you know, and record the volume and feedback.

Tailor your CV to each ad: a worked example
Sending the same CV to every support job is the most common reason good applicants go unanswered. Tailoring takes ten minutes per application once you have a strong base CV.
As a real example, we opened a Customer Service Representative (English) ad from PrimeXBT, a forex and crypto trading platform, on its Greenhouse page in October 2026 (PrimeXBT job ad on Greenhouse). As of October 2026, the ad describes the role as fully remote from any location and lists:
- shifts of "2/2 4am-4pm GMT" (two days on, two days off)
- fintech experience in forex or crypto, plus at least one year of online customer support
- excellent written and spoken English; the application form asks about B2-level English or higher and for a CV in English
- experience with customer service software, tools and databases
- a quarterly performance bonus and medical insurance after probation, with salary based on experience but no figure given
We're using this ad to show how tailoring works. It isn't a recommendation of the employer, and the ad may have closed by the time you read this.
Example (hypothetical): tailoring a base CV to that ad
- Translate the shift. GMT is UTC+0 and Lagos is UTC+1 all year, so a 4am to 4pm GMT shift is 5am to 5pm in Lagos. In your header, write: "Available for 12-hour 2/2 shifts, 5am to 5pm WAT (4am to 4pm GMT)." That tells the manager you've done the maths.
- Mirror the domain words. If you've supported a Nigerian fintech, wallet or betting app, put "fintech" and the exact products (crypto wallet, card payments, KYC) in your summary and first job.
- Prove the English level. Make the CV error-free. If you have an English test result, list it. If English is your first language of schooling, say "Fluent written and spoken English (all education in English)."
- Name the software. The ad says "customer service software", so list the specific help desk and CRM tools you've used.
- Show stamina for long shifts. One bullet such as "Covered 12-hour weekend shifts with consistent QA scores" speaks directly to a 2/2 pattern.
Ads also tell you what to drop. If you've done phone and chat support but the role is chat only, lead with chat.
Check eligibility before you tailor
"Remote" doesn't always mean "open to Nigeria". Read the location line, the application form questions and any country list before spending time on a CV. Our guide on working out whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents explains what phrases like "EMEA", "worldwide" and "US only" usually mean.
Nigeria-specific lines that help (and ones to leave out)
A few short additions answer questions a foreign manager may have about hiring someone in Nigeria.
- Work setup. One line under Skills, such as "Home office with inverter backup and two internet connections (fibre plus MiFi)". Only write it if it's true. Managers worry about outages, and this answers the worry before they raise it.
- Remote experience. If you've already worked remotely (even part-time or freelance), say so in the job title line: "Customer Support Agent (Remote), Company, London-based."
- Hours, honestly. Don't offer overnight US shifts on your CV if you can't sustain them for months.
- Contract type. Many companies hire Nigerians as independent contractors rather than employees. You don't need to mention this on your CV, but understand it before you accept an offer. Our guide to contractor versus employee arrangements explains the difference.
Leave out your bank details, NIN, BVN or passport number. No genuine employer needs these on a CV, and a CV gets forwarded to many people. Anyone asking for them, or for a fee, before a proper interview and written offer is a warning sign; see our guide to remote job scams in Nigeria.
Common mistakes on remote support CVs
- Designer layouts. Columns, icons and skill bars that an ATS can't read (see the Greenhouse list above).
- "Customer service" with no channel. Say whether it was phone, email, chat, social media or walk-in, because these are different skills.
- Duty lists instead of results. "Responsible for" bullets tell a manager nothing about quality.
- Inflated numbers. A 100% CSAT or 300 tickets a day invites questions you can't answer.
- Typos. For a writing-heavy role, one typo in the summary can sink the application. Read it aloud, then run it through a spellchecker set to UK or US English to match the employer.
- No hours or time zone. The manager can't tell whether you can cover their shift.
- One CV for every ad. The ad's keywords should appear in your CV, honestly.
- AI-written filler. Tools that rewrite your CV can help with wording, but generic phrases such as "dynamic professional with a proven track record" make CVs sound alike. Our planned guide on using AI on your CV without misrepresenting experience covers safe ways to use them.
Your cover letter or application answers matter too, especially for writing-heavy roles; see how to write a remote job cover letter. After the CV stage, many support employers send a written or role-play test, covered in how to pass a remote customer service assessment.
Final checklist before you apply
- One column, no tables or images, name and contacts in the main body.
- File saved as .docx or text-based PDF, well under 2.5MB, named "Firstname-Lastname-Customer-Support-CV".
- Header shows city, Nigeria, WAT (UTC+1) and the shifts you can work.
- Summary names channels, tools, one or two results and hours.
- Every role has three to five bullets with volume, speed or quality.
- Tools section lists only tools you can talk about confidently.
- The ad's exact skill phrases appear where they're true.
- Spelling checked twice, preferably with someone else reading it.
- Eligibility confirmed on the live ad.
- No photo, date of birth, NIN, BVN or bank details.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a CV for remote customer support jobs be?
One page for most applicants. Two pages are fine if you have many years of support or team-lead experience, but only if every line is relevant. Support managers read many CVs per opening, so a tight page is easier to shortlist.
Should I put Nigeria on my CV for a remote job?
Yes. Put your city, "Nigeria" and your time zone (WAT, UTC+1) in the header, plus the hours you can work. Employers check location for eligibility anyway, and stating it with your availability shows you understand how remote shifts work.
What should I put on a customer service CV if I have no experience?
Describe customer-facing work you've done in support terms: bank, POS, retail, church admin, NYSC or a WhatsApp business all count. Add a "Relevant projects" section with sample ticket replies or help-centre articles you've written, and list any genuine tool training. Volume and written examples matter more than job titles.
Can I use a Canva CV for remote customer support jobs?
Use one only if it's a single column and the text can be highlighted and copied. Greenhouse's help centre says columns, tables, graphics and image uploads can make CV parsing fail. Keep a plain Word version for application portals.
What skills should I list on a remote customer support CV?
List the channels you've handled (email, chat, phone, social media), help desk and CRM tools (such as Zendesk, Freshdesk, Intercom or HubSpot), languages, and typing speed if you've tested it. Back up soft skills such as patience and problem-solving with bullet points that show them, not just the words.
Do I need a Zendesk certificate to get a remote support job?
No, most ads ask for tool experience, not a certificate. A certificate such as the Zendesk Customer Service Professional Certificate on LinkedIn Learning can help a beginner show they know the vocabulary. Real or practice ticket work usually counts for more.
Should I include my salary expectation on my CV?
No. Leave pay off the CV and answer salary questions in the application form or interview, in the currency the employer uses. Our customer support specialist salary guide helps you set a realistic figure.
Should I write "resume" or "CV" when applying to US companies?
US ads say "resume", and you can upload the same document. Some US employers expect slightly different conventions, such as no personal details at all and US spelling; see our planned guide on adapting your CV for US remote jobs.
Key takeaways
- Use a one-column .docx or text-based PDF with no tables, columns, photos or header text, because these can break ATS parsing.
- Put your city, Nigeria, WAT (UTC+1) and the shifts you can actually work at the top.
- Write bullets that show volume, speed and quality (tickets a day, first response time, CSAT, QA scores), and never invent figures.
- List channels and named tools only where true, and mirror each ad's wording.
- If you're new to support, frame bank, retail, POS or business-DM work in support terms and add sample ticket replies.
- Check eligibility on the live ad before you tailor, and never put your NIN, BVN or bank details on a CV.
