A remote commission-only sales job pays you a share of every sale you close and nothing else: no salary, no hourly rate, no pay for the weeks you don't close. That can be a fair deal if the product sells, leads exist and commission arrives on time. More often it is a way for a company to get months of free work from people abroad.

Nigerians see these roles all the time: "100% commission, uncapped, work from anywhere". Some are real independent sales agent contracts. Some are only open to people living in the US. A few are pyramid schemes calling themselves sales jobs.

This guide explains how commission-only pay works and who it suits. You'll get worked examples in dollars and naira, the clauses to check before you accept "uncapped commission", and the warning signs that mean you should walk away.

Quick answer

Remote commission-only sales jobs pay only when you close a sale, usually as an independent contractor with no base pay or benefits. They can make sense for experienced closers selling a product people already buy, with warm leads and clear, written commission terms. For beginners they are high risk. Before you start, check that Nigerians are eligible, how much each sale pays, when commission is paid, any clawback rules and whether you must pay anything.

What a commission-only sales job is (and what it isn't)

A commission-only role, also called "100% commission" or "straight commission", pays you a percentage or fixed amount for each completed sale, booked meeting or signed client. If you sell nothing this month, you earn nothing this month.

It helps to separate four arrangements that job ads often blur together:

ArrangementHow you're paidTypical status
Base plus commissionFixed monthly pay plus a share of salesEmployee or long-term contractor
Commission-only agentOnly a share of closed salesIndependent contractor
Referral or affiliate dealSmall fee per lead or signupInformal partner
MLM or pyramid set-upSales plus recruiting, often after you buy stock or a kitYou are the customer

Base plus commission is the norm in established sales jobs. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics says most employers of wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives use a combination of salary and commissions or salary plus bonuses. So when a company offers commission only, it is choosing to put all the risk on you. Ask why.

Why commission-only roles are usually contractor roles

In the US and UK, employers can't simply pay employees nothing in a month with no sales. The US Department of Labor's fact sheet on the outside sales exemption says the exemption from minimum wage only covers people who sell away from the employer's premises. It also says that outside sales does not include sales made by mail, telephone or the Internet, and that a home used as a base for phone selling counts as the employer's place of business. In the UK, HMRC treats commission as "output work". Employers must either set a fair rate under the rated output system or pay at least the minimum wage for every hour worked.

In practice, that's why remote commission-only roles are almost always set up as independent contractor or "sales partner" agreements. Minimum-wage rules like these are written for employees in those countries. As a contractor based in Nigeria, assume no pay floor protects you. The written agreement is your main protection, so read it closely. Our guide to contractor versus employee arrangements with foreign companies explains the difference in more detail.

The benefits: when commission-only pay works in your favour

Commission-only roles aren't automatically bad. They suit some people and some products.

  • Earnings tied to output, not location. Commission is usually a share of the deal value, so a $1,000 sale pays the same in Lagos as in Leeds. Salaried remote roles for Nigeria-based workers, by contrast, often pay below US local rates.
  • Easier to get in. Companies risk little by taking you on, so they ask for fewer credentials. That lets someone with Nigerian sales experience show what they can do for a foreign company.
  • Flexible hours. Many agent contracts don't fix your hours, so you can fit the work around a day job or studies (at least at first).
  • Recurring commission can build up. Some software, staffing and subscription companies pay a share of each customer's monthly bill for as long as the customer stays. Over a year or two, those payments can add up to steady income.
  • A track record you can show. Closed deals in a CRM (customer relationship management software such as HubSpot or Salesforce) are proof you can use to apply for salaried roles as a sales development representative or account executive.

The benefits only show up when three things are true: the product already sells, someone gives you leads or a clear target market, and commission is paid reliably. Take any one away and you end up working for free.

The risks: what usually goes wrong

Months of work with no income

Business-to-business (B2B) sales cycles often run weeks or months. You can prospect for six weeks, book ten calls and close nothing yet. Meanwhile you still pay for data, fuel for the generator or inverter batteries, and transport. Commission-only work costs you money every week before it pays you anything.

"Uncapped" means little without leads

"Uncapped commission" sounds generous. Often it just means the company isn't spending anything on you. If you have to find every lead yourself, cold-message strangers on LinkedIn and sell an unknown product to people in another time zone, the real ceiling is very low.

Commission paid late, reduced or clawed back

Many contracts pay commission only after the client pays, and some pay once a quarter. Clawback clauses take commission back if a client cancels or asks for a refund within a set period. A deal you closed in January might pay in April, or not at all.

Disputes you can't easily win

From Nigeria, chasing an unpaid $300 commission from a small overseas firm is rarely worth a lawyer. If the contract is vague about who "owns" a lead, or what counts as a closed sale, the company decides.

Eligibility traps

Many commission-only ads look global but aren't. In October 2026 we opened a commission-only sales listing on Workable from QuickTeam, a firm placing offshore virtual assistants with US businesses. The QuickTeam commission-only representative ad describes uncapped, recurring commission, but it says applicants must be based in the US. The word "remote" in a title doesn't mean Nigerians can apply. Always read the location line in the live ad.

Pyramid schemes dressed up as sales

The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says most people who join legitimate multi-level marketing companies make little or no money. It names the warning signs of a pyramid scheme: recruiting presented as the main way to earn, pressure to act now, buying stock to "stay active" and repeated fees for training or materials. If a "sales role" asks you to pay to start or to recruit others under you, it isn't a sales job.

Worked examples: what commission-only pay looks like in practice

These are illustrations of how the maths works, not market averages. Conversions use ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026).

Example (hypothetical): one-off B2B deals

You sell website packages at $1,500 each for 15% commission, so each sale pays $225.

  • 3 sales a month = $675, about ₦919,000
  • 1 sale a month = $225, about ₦306,000
  • 0 sales = $0, while you still pay for data and power

Now add the terms. If commission is paid 30 days after the client pays, and clients pay 30 days after signing, March's sales pay you in May. If a client cancels within 60 days and there's a clawback clause, you lose that $225.

Example (hypothetical): recurring software commission

You sell a $99-a-month subscription and earn 20% of each customer's bill for 12 months: $19.80 a month per customer.

  • After 1 month with 5 customers: $99 a month
  • After 6 months, adding 5 a month with none cancelling: $594 a month, about ₦809,000
  • If the agreement ends payments when your contract ends, that build-up disappears the day you leave

Recurring deals start slowly and can become worthwhile. The clause that decides everything is how long the payments last and whether they stop when you leave.

Example (hypothetical): work out the activity behind the target

Say you want $500 a month from $225 deals. You need about 2.2 sales a month. Suppose 1 in 5 sales calls closes and 1 in 30 cold messages books a call. You'd need about 11 calls a month and roughly 330 well-targeted messages. Swap in the company's real conversion figures (ask for them) and see whether the target is realistic alongside your other commitments.

Uncapped commission: what to check before you say yes

Use this checklist on any commission-only or uncapped-commission offer. Get the answers in writing, not on a call.

ClauseWhat a fair answer looks like
Commission rateA stated percentage or amount per sale, not "competitive"
What counts as a saleSigned contract, or first payment received, clearly defined
Payment timingA fixed date, e.g. monthly within 30 days of client payment
ClawbacksA short window (e.g. 30 to 90 days) and only for real refunds
Recurring commissionHow many months, and whether it continues after you leave
Lead supplyWho provides leads, and how many a week
Lead ownershipHow disputes over who found a client are settled
Caps or tiersNo hidden ceiling; any bonus tiers written down
TerritoryWhich countries or industries you may sell to
Payment methodBank wire, Payoneer, Wise or a payroll platform, in dollars
TerminationNotice period and what happens to commission you've earned

A few points need more explanation.

Ask what top and average agents earn. A company that has run an agent programme for a year can tell you median monthly commission per active agent. If it only quotes the best performer, treat that figure the way you'd treat any unrealistic salary promise in a job ad.

Ask for real numbers on the product. Price, typical close rate, sales cycle length and the main reasons buyers say no. If the company can't tell you, nobody has sold it successfully yet.

Check how commission reaches you in Nigeria. Confirm the currency and method before you start. Payoneer, Wise, Grey, Raenest or a domiciliary account each have different fees and limits; our guide to receiving dollar payments in Nigeria compares them.

Read the termination clause twice. Some agreements say that commission on deals still in progress is forfeited when either side ends the contract. That clause lets a company drop agents just before a large deal pays out.

Red flags that mean walk away

The surest test is money: a genuine sales role pays you; it doesn't charge you. Walk away if you see any of these:

  • A fee for training, a "starter kit", a licence, software or a background check before you can sell.
  • Pressure to buy the product yourself, or to recruit friends who then buy.
  • No company name, no website, or contact only through Telegram, WhatsApp or a personal Gmail address.
  • Income claims like "earn $5,000 in your first month" with no breakdown.
  • A request for your BVN, bank login or card details at the application stage.
  • Commission paid in crypto tokens, gift cards or "points" rather than money.
  • An offer within minutes of a chat, with no call and no written agreement.

Nigeria-specific realities to plan for

Time zones decide your working hours

Selling to US businesses means working their hours. From 1 November 2026, US Eastern Time is 6 hours behind Lagos. A 9am to 5pm Eastern day runs from 3pm to 11pm in Lagos (2pm to 10pm during US summer time). US Pacific clients push you later still, 8 or 9 hours behind. UK buyers are easier: 9am to 5pm in London is 10am to 6pm in Lagos in winter and the same hours in summer.

Power and internet are your costs, not the company's

A commission-only contractor pays for their own inverter, solar or generator fuel, and their own internet. A dropped sales call because NEPA took light can lose you a deal. Keep two connections, for example a MiFi plus a phone hotspot on a different network, and check your backup power before every booked call.

Credibility with foreign buyers

Expect some foreign buyers to hesitate about a seller in Nigeria they've never met. A company email address, a proper LinkedIn profile, a local US or UK phone number supplied by the company, and case studies all help. If the company won't give you a company email address or any sales material, it isn't serious about its agents.

Tax and records

Commission earned as a contractor is income, and Nigeria-based remote workers have tax obligations at home. Keep each commission statement and payment receipt. Our guide to tax for remote workers under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 explains what to declare.

Where commission-only work fits in a sales career

For most readers, commission-only work is a side test or a stepping stone, not a main income.

Here's how we'd use it sensibly:

  1. Keep your current income. Take a commission-only contract alongside a job or salaried role, never in place of one, until it has paid reliably for three months.
  2. Pick products you can explain. Sell into an industry you know, such as logistics, schools, clinics or property, where your local experience helps.
  3. Set a cut-off date. Decide in advance: no paid commission within 90 days means you stop.
  4. Record everything in a CRM. Calls booked, demos, close rate and commission received. These numbers become your CV evidence.
  5. Move to base pay. Use that record to apply for salaried roles. Our planned guide to remote sales jobs with a base salary covers how to find them.

Some neighbouring roles mix fixed pay with commission and suit beginners better. Appointment setters book meetings for closers and are often paid per meeting plus a base; our planned guide to appointment setter jobs with commission and base pay explains the trade-offs.

Where to find genuine commission-only agent work

Commission-only work is mostly found through agent marketplaces and direct deals with companies rather than job boards. CommissionCrowd describes itself as a global network matching companies with independent B2B commission-only agents and says it is free for sales professionals (as of October 2026). Being listed there doesn't make an opportunity sound: run every offer through the checklist above.

You'll also see "worldwide" commission-only roles on general job sites. One example we opened in October 2026 was a Sitelexa medical-website sales listing on Torre. It said applicants from all countries were welcome but gave no commission rate and no contract type, and it was already closed. That is typical of the category: wide eligibility, little detail. Ask for the missing terms before doing any work.

Frequently asked questions

Are remote commission-only sales jobs legitimate?

Some are, and many aren't worth the time. A legitimate one names the company, the product, the commission rate and the payment date in a written agreement and never asks you to pay. Treat anything that charges a fee or relies on recruiting as a scam or a pyramid scheme.

Can Nigerians apply for commission-only sales jobs with US companies?

Yes, when the company accepts agents outside the US. Many US commission-only roles require you to live in the US. Read the location line in the live ad, and if it isn't clear, ask in writing before you apply.

Is uncapped commission a good sign?

Not by itself. Uncapped commission only matters if you can realistically make sales, which depends on lead supply, product demand, the commission rate and payment terms. Check those first, then judge whether "uncapped" means anything for you.

How long does it take to earn the first commission?

It depends on the sales cycle and the payment terms. It is often one to three months, and longer for B2B deals, since some contracts only pay after the client pays. Ask the company how long a typical deal takes from first contact to commission paid.

Should I pay for training or a starter kit to begin selling?

No. Genuine companies pay to train their sales agents, because they profit when you sell. The FTC lists repeated fees for training or materials as a warning sign of a pyramid scheme.

What is a commission clawback?

A clawback is a contract term that takes back commission you've been paid if the client cancels, defaults or gets a refund within a set period. Fair clawbacks are short and limited to real refunds. Avoid clauses that let the company reclaim commission for any reason at any time.

Are commission-only sales jobs good for beginners?

Usually not as a main income. Beginners rarely have the pipeline or skills to close quickly, so they carry the most risk. A base-plus-commission or appointment-setting role is a safer way to learn, with commission-only work as a side test.

How do I get paid for commission-only work in Nigeria?

Most foreign companies pay agents by bank wire, Payoneer, Wise or a contractor platform such as Deel. Agree the currency and method before you start, and check fees on your receiving account.

Key takeaways

  • Commission-only sales pays nothing unless you close, and remote versions are almost always contractor agreements with no pay floor.
  • Most established sales jobs combine salary and commission, so a commission-only offer moves all the risk onto you.
  • "Uncapped" matters less than lead supply, commission rate, payment timing, clawbacks and what happens to commission when the contract ends.
  • Many "remote" commission-only ads are restricted to US residents; read the live ad's location line.
  • Any request to pay a fee, buy stock or recruit others means walk away.
  • Use commission-only work as a side test with a cut-off date, then use your sales record to move into base-plus-commission roles.
