Remote Account Manager Jobs: Career Requirements for Nigerians
What remote account manager jobs require in 2026: experience, CRM skills, pay, and the location rules that decide if you can apply from Nigeria.

Most remote account manager jobs ask for two to five years of experience managing existing customers, proof that you grew revenue from those customers through renewals or upsells, and confidence with a CRM and account data. The harder requirement for Nigerians is usually location: many "remote" account manager ads only accept people in certain countries, so you have to read the eligibility line as carefully as the skills list.
Account management is a good remote career for Nigerians who already deal with clients. That includes customer support agents, bank relationship officers, agency client service staff and B2B sales people. The work happens on video calls, email and dashboards, and foreign companies pay for people who keep customers renewing.
This guide uses live ads we opened in October 2026. It covers the experience, skills, tools, language and location requirements employers set, what the roles pay, and a realistic route in from Nigeria.
Quick answer
A remote account manager looks after a company's existing customers and is measured on keeping them (renewals) and growing their spend (expansion). Employers usually want 2 to 5 years in account management, customer success or B2B sales, a revenue number you owned, CRM and data skills, and fluent English. Many roles don't require a degree. Check the location line in every ad, because "EMEA remote" often excludes Nigeria.
What a remote account manager actually does
An account manager owns a set of named customers after the sale is closed. Their job is to make sure those customers renew, buy more and stay happy enough to say yes when the contract comes up again.
Two current ads show the pattern. The Sr Account Manager, EMEA ad at Customer.io describes owning "the commercial strategy" for mid-market and enterprise accounts, covering renewals, expansion and preventing churn, and forecasting renewal and expansion pipeline. The Key Account Manager ad at Kaiko Systems lists running business reviews, keeping account records accurate (status, ARR, stakeholders, risks), spotting expansion opportunities and flagging risk early (both as of October 2026).
A typical week in the role includes:
- Quarterly or monthly business reviews with client managers and directors
- Checking usage data and health scores to see which accounts might churn
- Preparing renewal quotes and negotiating price increases
- Passing product feedback to the product team
- Handing larger new deals to an account executive or working them yourself, depending on the company
Some terms you'll see in ads:
- ARR (annual recurring revenue): The yearly value of a customer's subscription.
- Churn: Customers who cancel or don't renew.
- Expansion or upsell: Getting an existing customer to buy more seats, a higher plan or another product.
- NRR (net revenue retention): Revenue from existing customers this year compared with last year, after expansion and churn. Above 100% means existing customers are spending more.
- OTE (on-target earnings): Base salary plus the commission you earn if you hit your target.
Account manager vs account executive vs customer success manager
People confuse these three roles, and the requirements differ. Here is how the three usually split, though every company draws the lines a little differently:
| Role | Main focus | Usually measured on |
|---|---|---|
| Account executive | Winning new customers | New revenue closed |
| Account manager | Keeping and growing existing customers | Renewals, expansion, NRR |
| Customer success manager | Helping customers get value from the product | Adoption, health scores, retention |
If you want to close new business, read our guide to becoming a remote account executive. If you prefer onboarding and product adoption, the customer success manager career guide fits better. Account management sits between the two. It's commercial like sales, but the relationships last years.
Experience requirements in remote account manager ads
Most remote account manager roles are not entry-level. The ads we opened in October 2026 set clear experience floors:
| Employer and role | Experience asked for |
|---|---|
| Kaiko Systems, Key Account Manager | At least 2 years in account management, customer success or similar, owning named accounts |
| Customer.io, Sr Account Manager EMEA | 3+ years with a revenue number you owned (5+ preferred), about $5M ARR managed |
| DunnandBraxton, Growth and Partnerships Manager (Nigeria) | At least 5 years winning business in Nigeria |
| Bendt Consulting, Email Marketing Account Manager | At least 1 year of hands-on Klaviyo work (junior role) |
These ads point to a few patterns.
Direct experience beats job titles. Kaiko accepts customer success or "a similar role" as long as you owned named accounts. A Nigerian bank relationship manager with a portfolio of SME clients, or an agency account lead who handled a fixed client list, can describe that experience in account management terms.
Senior roles want a revenue number. Customer.io wants someone who has carried a commercial target and can explain how they forecast. "Managed client relationships" won't get through that screen. "Owned renewals for 40 accounts worth $1.2M ARR, 104% NRR" will.
Agency and service-business roles are the softer entry point. The Bendt Consulting ad is labelled junior and asks for one year of tool experience. "Account manager" in agencies often means managing client projects and deliverables, not running large renewals.
Do you need a degree?
Often no. The Kaiko and Bendt listings don't require one, while the DunnandBraxton role asks for "any relevant degree". For comparison, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that most sales managers need a bachelor's degree but that employers mainly want several years of sales experience. Remote employers abroad usually look at your results first. If you have an HND or no degree, a strong record of retained and grown accounts matters more.
Skills and tools employers expect
Across the ads, the skills fall into four groups.
Commercial skills
- Running renewal conversations, including price increases. Kaiko asks for this explicitly.
- Spotting expansion opportunities and explaining return on investment to a customer
- Forecasting: predicting which renewals and upsells will close this quarter, and being right
- Negotiating with procurement, legal and finance teams on bigger contracts
Data skills
Customer.io wants someone "comfortable pulling usage data, tracking health scores, and building dashboards". Kaiko wants a "data-driven" approach that shows customers their value in numbers. You don't need to be an analyst. You do need to open a spreadsheet, filter usage by account, and turn it into a slide that says "your team used feature X 3,000 times this quarter, which saved roughly Y hours".
Relationship skills
Account managers need several contacts in each customer company, from day-to-day users up to directors and VPs. Customer.io calls this "multi-threaded relationships". The point is that if your one contact leaves, the account doesn't leave with them.
Tools
Expect at least one CRM (Salesforce or HubSpot are the most common), a video call tool (Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams), a shared workspace such as Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, and often a customer success platform or BI dashboard. A closed account manager listing for ACLED on Remote4Africa, advertised as open "anywhere in the world", listed CRM, Salesforce, Microsoft Office, project management and writing among its skills.
Two free ways to learn:
- Salesforce Trailhead is free to use, with hands-on modules and role-based career paths. Certification exams are separate, so check exam fees before you plan around one.
- HubSpot Academy's Inbound Sales certification course is free and takes about three hours (as of October 2026).
Certificates won't get you hired on their own, but they help when your CRM experience was with a Nigerian in-house tool nobody abroad has heard of. Our planned guide to CRM skills for remote sales professionals covers this in more depth.
Language requirements
Fluent English is the minimum. Many European account manager roles also want a market language. The Bendt Consulting role requires fluent German, and Kaiko lists other market languages as an advantage. If you speak French well, you have an edge for francophone African and European accounts.
Location requirements: can you apply from Nigeria?
Sometimes, yes. Read the location wording, because it decides more applications than the skills list does. Remote account manager ads fall into four groups:
| What the ad says | What it usually means for you |
|---|---|
| A specific country (e.g. "UK or Ireland only") | Not open to someone living in Nigeria |
| A region (e.g. "EMEA Remote") | Might include Nigeria; check the small print |
| "Anywhere in the world" or "worldwide" | Usually open, often with a time-zone overlap |
| "Nigeria, remote" | Open; local pay, often in naira |
The Customer.io ad is a useful warning. Its heading says "EMEA Remote", but the text says the role "is open to candidates based in the UK or Ireland only", and the application form asks about visa sponsorship (as of October 2026). Our planned explainer on what EMEA means in a remote job ad goes through more examples.
Worldwide ads often come with conditions. The Kaiko Systems listing says "Worldwide" but asks for a working day that overlaps substantially with Central European Time, plus travel to customers and industry events. The JOIN page's structured data also lists Germany as an applicant location, which conflicts with "worldwide". When an ad sends mixed signals like this, ask the recruiter in one short line before you put hours into the application. The steps for doing that are in our planned guide on checking whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents.
Time zones can work in your favour here. Lagos (WAT, UTC+1) is on the same time as Central Europe in winter and one hour behind it in summer. CET-overlap roles are realistic from Nigeria. US-focused account roles are harder: US Eastern is 6 hours behind Lagos from 1 November 2026, so a 9am to 5pm New York day runs from 3pm to 11pm in Lagos.
Employee or contractor?
Account manager offers abroad come in different forms. Bendt Consulting describes a permanent 40-hour contract. Kaiko describes a 12-month fixed-term contract, labelled "contractor" in its page data. When a foreign company hires you from Nigeria, you'll usually be an independent contractor or employed through an employer of record (EOR). The difference affects leave, notice and tax. Our guide to contractor versus EOR employee status explains how each works.
What remote account managers earn
Pay varies a lot with seniority, the employer's country, the size of accounts you manage, and whether a salary figure is base pay or OTE. The figures below come from job ads checked in October 2026. They are not market averages.
| Role and source | Location | Pay as advertised |
|---|---|---|
| Customer.io, Sr Account Manager EMEA | UK or Ireland only | About $151,700 to $212,000 OTE a year, plus stock options |
| Bendt Consulting, Email Marketing Account Manager | Worldwide (German required) | €30,000 to €45,000 a year |
| Digistore24, Growth Key Account Manager (Remote Rocketship listing) | Worldwide | €45,000 to €60,000 a year |
| PR Profis, PR Editor and Client Account Manager (Remote Rocketship listing) | Worldwide | €500 to €2,500 a month |
| DunnandBraxton, Growth and Partnerships Manager | Nigeria, Lagos-based | ₦1,000,000 a month |
The last three rows come from Remote Rocketship's list of account manager jobs open to Nigeria and its DunnandBraxton listing. We didn't check each one on the employer's own page. The Bendt figure comes from its Remote Rocketship listing. At the WorkRemote house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), the DunnandBraxton salary is about $734 a month.
Some honest context:
- The Customer.io range is for UK and Ireland residents. A Nigeria-based contractor would not usually be offered that, even for similar work.
- The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median sales manager wage at $148,270 a year (May 2025). That's a US benchmark for managers of sales teams, useful for showing where the career can lead. It isn't what a Nigeria-based account manager will be offered.
- Account manager pay often includes commission tied to renewals and expansion. Always ask what share is variable and what target it depends on.
For account executive pay, see our account executive salary guide. Our planned guide on evaluating a remote sales job offer shows how to compare base, OTE and contract terms.
Routes into remote account management from Nigeria
Few people are hired straight into a remote account manager job. These are the realistic routes, roughly from easiest to hardest:
- From customer support or customer success. You already know the product and the customers. Ask to own renewals for a small group of accounts, or move into a customer success role first. Our planned guide on moving from customer support to customer success covers this step.
- From agency client servicing. Nigerian marketing, PR and creative agencies use the title "account manager" or "client service executive" for people who manage client relationships. Foreign agencies hire for similar roles, sometimes worldwide.
- From sales development. A sales development representative books meetings for closers. Some companies move good SDRs into account management rather than closing roles.
- From Nigerian B2B sales or banking. Relationship managers at banks, fintechs, telcos and SaaS companies already manage portfolios and targets. Translate that experience into ARR, retention and growth figures.
- From specialist tool skills. The Bendt role shows that deep skill in one platform (Klaviyo in that case) can open junior account manager doors at agencies.
Example (hypothetical): a 9-month plan from support to account management
Tolu works in customer support for a Lagos SaaS company and wants a remote account manager role with a European company.
- Months 1 to 2: Completes the free HubSpot Inbound Sales course and Trailhead's CRM basics. Asks her manager to let her handle renewal reminders for 15 small accounts.
- Months 3 to 5: Runs short check-in calls with those accounts, logs every call in the CRM and tracks how many renew.
- Months 6 to 7: Writes up the results as a one-page case study: accounts, renewal rate, one upsell she spotted and passed on.
- Months 8 to 9: Applies to worldwide and CET-overlap account manager and junior customer success roles, leading with the case study.
The numbers in her case study will be small. That's fine. Employers want to see that you've owned a renewal outcome, not just answered tickets.
How to show you meet the requirements on your CV
Account manager CVs get screened on numbers. For each role, try to state:
- How many accounts you owned, and their total value (ARR or annual contract value)
- Your renewal or retention rate
- Growth you drove: upsells, extra seats, cross-sells
- The size and seniority of the people you dealt with
- The CRM and data tools you used every day
Example (hypothetical) before and after:
- Before: "Managed relationships with corporate clients and ensured satisfaction."
- After: "Owned 32 SME accounts worth ₦180M a year in Salesforce; renewed 91% and grew the portfolio 14% through add-on sales in 2025."
If you've worked in naira, it's fine to keep naira figures, but add a dollar equivalent with the rate and date or use percentages. Foreign recruiters can't judge "₦180M" quickly.
Expect a process like the one Customer.io lists: a 30-minute recruiter call, a 45-minute hiring manager call, a take-home assignment, then a one-hour review of your assignment with the team. Account manager take-homes are often an account plan or a mock renewal. Prepare a forecasting method you can explain in two minutes, since Customer.io asks for exactly that. WorkRemote's CV and LinkedIn rewrite service is part of Premium if you want someone on our team to rework your CV around these numbers.
Nigerian setup requirements for the job
Account managers spend much of the day on client calls, so a dropped call during a renewal negotiation costs more than in most remote jobs.
- Power: An inverter with enough battery for a full working day, or solar, with a generator as last resort. Don't rely on your DisCo band alone.
- Internet: Two providers, or a MiFi plus a phone hotspot on a different network. Test video quality on both before a client call.
- Workspace: A quiet room and a decent headset. Clients notice background noise more than they notice your laptop.
- Travel: Some roles, like Kaiko's, expect travel to customers and events. You'll need a valid international passport, and for Europe, visas. Ask early how often travel is expected and who pays.
- Getting paid: Foreign employers usually pay through an EOR such as Deel or Remote, by direct transfer, or through a payments platform. Our guide on receiving dollar payments in Nigeria compares the options. Tax on that income is covered in tax for remote workers in Nigeria.
Mistakes and red flags to watch for
- Applying to region-locked roles. If an ad says "UK or Ireland only" or asks about right to work in a specific country, don't send a speculative application. Spend that time on worldwide or Nigeria-open ads.
- Confusing account manager with account executive. If the ad talks mostly about prospecting and closing new logos, it's a sales role. Pitch new-business results there and retention results for account management.
- Commission-only "account manager" roles. Some ads use the title for pure commission sales with no base salary. Read our planned guide on commission-only remote sales jobs before accepting one.
- Paying to get hired. A genuine employer never asks you to pay for training, a "starter kit" or a work permit before you start. See our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria.
- Vague claims. "Excellent relationship-building skills" with no numbers behind it won't pass a screen for a role that tracks NRR.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a remote account manager job from Nigeria without experience?
Rarely. Most remote account manager ads ask for at least one to two years in a client-facing commercial role, and senior ones ask for three to five. Without experience, start in customer support, sales development or agency client servicing and move across once you've owned some renewals. Our guide to remote jobs for Nigerians with no experience lists better starting points.
What qualifications do I need to be a remote account manager?
Usually experience and results rather than a specific qualification. Ads ask for years of account management or B2B sales, CRM skills, data comfort and fluent English. Some local roles ask for a degree, and free CRM training from Salesforce Trailhead or HubSpot Academy helps if your CRM experience is thin.
Is account management the same as customer success?
No, though they overlap. Customer success focuses on adoption and product value, while account management focuses on commercial outcomes: renewals, price changes and expansion revenue. Some smaller companies combine both in one role, so read the responsibilities, not just the title.
Do remote account managers earn commission?
Often, yes. Many account manager packages are quoted as OTE, meaning base salary plus commission or a bonus tied to renewals and expansion. Ask what percentage is variable, what the target is, and how often commission is paid.
Which time zones suit Nigerian account managers best?
European ones. Lagos is on the same time as Central Europe in winter and one hour behind in summer, and one hour ahead of London in winter. US-focused roles mean evening work in Lagos, since New York is 6 hours behind from 1 November 2026.
Does "EMEA remote" mean Nigeria is included?
Not always. EMEA covers Europe, the Middle East and Africa, but many employers only hire in the EMEA countries where they have legal entities or payroll. One October 2026 account manager ad labelled "EMEA Remote" accepted only candidates in the UK or Ireland, so always read the full location text.
How do I move from account manager to a more senior role?
Grow the size of accounts you manage and keep a clear record of your retention and growth numbers. Typical next steps are senior or enterprise account manager, then team lead or head of account management. Some people move into sales leadership, which the US BLS reports as well-paid in the US market.
Key takeaways
- Remote account managers keep and grow existing customers. They're judged on renewals, expansion and retention, not new deals.
- Most ads ask for 2 to 5 years of commercial, client-owning experience. Degrees are often optional, but numbers are not.
- CRM skills (Salesforce or HubSpot), comfort with usage data and fluent English are standard requirements. A second market language helps in Europe.
- Location wording decides eligibility. "EMEA remote" can still exclude Nigeria, and "worldwide" ads often require a CET overlap or travel.
- Advertised pay in October 2026 ranged from about ₦1,000,000 a month for a Nigeria-based role to six-figure dollar OTE for UK-only roles. Pay for Nigeria-based workers usually sits well below US or UK local pay.
- Common routes in are customer support, sales development, agency client servicing and Nigerian B2B or banking relationship roles.
Next steps
Start by rewriting your CV around accounts owned, renewal rate and growth, then look for roles that are actually open to you. Search for "account manager" on the WorkRemote jobs board, or browse the business and marketing listings. Each listing shows where applicants may live. After a search, use "Get email updates" to save it, and new matching jobs will reach you in a free daily email. If you're still deciding between account management and closing new deals, read the planned overview of the best remote sales jobs for Nigerians.
