How to Find Remote Sales Jobs With Base Salary
Find remote sales jobs with a guaranteed base salary from Nigeria: decode OTE and draws, search the right job boards, and know what to ask before you accept.

To find remote sales jobs with base salary, search for adverts that state a fixed monthly or yearly amount separate from commission. Then confirm in writing that the base is paid whether or not you hit quota. Wording like "base + commission", "OTE" with a stated split, or a published pay range usually means a base exists. "Commission only", "unlimited earning potential" with no figures, or a "draw" you must repay usually means it doesn't.
This matters more for Nigeria-based workers than for most. Your rent, data and generator fuel don't wait for a deal to close, and commission-only roles are the first thing many international companies offer applicants abroad. This guide covers how sales pay is structured, the exact search terms that bring up base-pay roles, which advertised figures actually apply to someone living in Nigeria, a real worldwide example checked in October 2026, and the questions to ask before you accept.
Quick answer
Remote sales jobs with a base salary are roles where you get a fixed amount every month plus commission or bonuses on top. To find them, filter job boards by salary, search applicant tracking systems for "base salary" or "OTE" alongside "remote" and "EMEA" or "worldwide", and read each advert's location line. Before accepting, confirm in writing that the base is guaranteed, which currency it's paid in, and whether you'd be a contractor or an employee.
What "base salary" means in a sales job
A base salary is the fixed part of your pay. You get it every pay period even in a bad month. Commission, bonuses and accelerators sit on top of it and depend on results.
Fixed pay plus variable pay is the normal model in established sales teams. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics says of wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives that "most employers use a combination of salary and commissions or salary plus bonuses" (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook). Commission-only roles exist, but they aren't the default for serious employers.
The pay terms you will see in adverts
| Term | What it means | Is there a guaranteed base? |
|---|---|---|
| Base + commission | Fixed pay plus a share of what you sell | Yes |
| OTE (on-target earnings) | Base plus the commission you'd earn at 100% of quota | Yes, if the split is stated |
| Base + bonus | Fixed pay plus bonuses tied to targets | Yes |
| Non-recoverable draw | An advance on commission you keep even if you miss target | Partly, often for a limited period |
| Recoverable draw | An advance you repay from future commission | No, it works like a loan |
| Commission only | Paid only when deals close | No |
| "Competitive salary" | No figure given | Unknown, so ask |
How OTE splits work
OTE is quoted as a single number, but the split is what matters. A role with a $36,000 OTE on a 50/50 split pays $18,000 base. The same OTE on a 70/30 split pays $25,200 base. Many SaaS (software-as-a-service) companies run closer to 50/50 for account executives (who close deals). Roles like SDRs (sales development representatives, who book meetings for closers) and account managers often carry a larger fixed share, because they have less direct control over closed revenue.
If an advert gives only OTE, ask for the base figure before your first interview. A recruiter who won't give it is telling you something.
Which remote sales roles usually come with a base
Some sales titles carry a base far more often than others. Use this table to decide where to spend your applications.
| Role | Base is usually... | Why |
|---|---|---|
| SDR / BDR | Common | Paid for meetings booked, not revenue closed |
| Account executive (SaaS) | Common | Long sales cycles need stable pay |
| Account manager | Very common | Mostly retention and upselling |
| Customer success manager | Very common | Often salaried with a small bonus |
| Inside sales rep (inbound) | Common | High volume of warm leads |
| Appointment setter | Mixed | Many are commission-only or per meeting |
| "Closer" for coaching or info products | Rare | Usually commission-only |
| Independent sales agent | Rare | Contractor paid per sale |
The roles closest to established software, fintech and B2B services companies tend to pay a base. The roles closest to high-ticket coaching, "online business" offers and network-style products tend not to.
For the skills and tools each role needs, see our guides on becoming a remote sales development representative and becoming a remote account executive. For appointment setting specifically, see remote appointment setter jobs with commission and base pay.
Where to search for base-pay remote sales roles
Job boards with salary filters
Start with any board that lets you filter by salary. Roles that publish a pay figure are more likely to have a real base. On WorkRemote.ng you can filter the business and marketing listings by salary, job type and experience level, and each listing shows where applicants may live. That saves you reading adverts that turn out to be US-only.
Aggregators help with discovery too, but treat them as pointers, not proof. When we reviewed one aggregator's Nigeria sales page in October 2026, it mixed roles marked "Anywhere in the World" with roles whose original URLs pointed to Minneapolis and US-only positions. Always click through to the employer's own advert.
Applicant tracking systems (ATS) with Google search operators
Many international companies post jobs on applicant tracking systems such as Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Workable and Teamtailor. These pages are public, and you can search them with Google operators. Try combinations like these:
site:job-boards.greenhouse.io "OTE" remote EMEA salessite:jobs.lever.co "base salary" "sales development" remotesite:jobs.ashbyhq.com "account executive" remote Africasite:apply.workable.com sales remote "worldwide" "base"
Swap in "Nigeria", "Africa", "EMEA" (Europe, Middle East and Africa) or "worldwide". Expect many results to be closed or restricted. When we tried these searches in October 2026, several adverts returned "not found" errors. Turnover is high, so check new results every few days.
Company careers pages
When a company has hired worldwide for sales before, bookmark its careers page. Remote-first companies often state their policy openly, and the advert itself usually shows the pay structure. Our guide to finding remote jobs on company career pages explains how to build a shortlist.
A real example: what a worldwide base-pay sales advert looks like
As of October 2026 (checked 27 October 2026), Worldpackers, a travel and volunteering platform, listed an Epic Sales Representative role as "Worldwide" and "Fully Remote". The advert states:
- Pay: a base of $1,200 a month plus $20 commission per adjusted sale, paid at the monthly close
- Contract: an independent contractor agreement
- Requirements: outstanding written English and comfort running high-volume WhatsApp group conversations, with HubSpot CRM experience as a plus
- Schedule: availability Sunday to Thursday during active launch weeks
The company's careers page describes a 100% remote model, and it also listed an Account Executive (Epic Trips Sales) role, again worldwide and fully remote. That second advert publishes no pay at all. Two adverts from the same company, one with a clear base and one without, show why you have to read each listing.
At the house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN, 23 October 2026), the $1,200 base is about ₦1,634,000 a month before any commission, fees or tax. This is one example, not a market rate, and the advert may have closed by the time you read this. Check the live page before applying.
How to tell from an advert whether the base is real
Read the compensation section line by line. These signals help.
Signs a genuine base exists:
- A figure or range is given for the base separately from commission
- OTE is stated alongside a split ("60/40") or a base figure
- The advert mentions a ramp period or guaranteed commission for the first months
- Pay frequency is stated (monthly, twice a month)
- The location line includes your country or region
Signs there is no base, or a weak one:
- "Uncapped earnings" or "top reps earn $10k a month" with no fixed figure
- "Base salary available after probation" or "after you hit your first target"
- "Draw against commission" with no mention of whether it's recoverable
- The pay is described only in terms of commission percentages
- You must buy a starter kit, training or software to begin
A "performance base" also deserves questions. Some adverts use the phrase for a fixed amount that is cut if you miss targets, which makes it partly variable. Ask exactly what happens to the base in a month when you miss quota.
For commission-only roles in detail, including when they can make sense, read commission-only remote sales jobs: risks and benefits.
Does the advertised base apply to you in Nigeria?
Often it doesn't. A pay range in an advert usually applies to the location the advert names. Many US states now require pay ranges in job ads, so US postings often show $55,000 to $60,000 for an SDR. That range is for someone living in the US. If the company also hires from Nigeria, it will usually pay a different amount, often through a contractor or employer-of-record arrangement.
Benchmarks, and what they mean for you
| Figure | Source and what it measures | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| $104,920 a year | BLS median, US technical and scientific sales reps, May 2025 | US benchmark only |
| $72,080 a year | BLS median, other US wholesale sales reps, May 2025 | US benchmark only |
| $26,357 a year | Plane estimate, median base for remote SDRs in Nigeria | Rough guide; method not published |
| $11,772 to $44,506 | Plane 10th to 90th percentile, same role | Shows how wide the range is |
The BLS figures come from the Occupational Outlook Handbook and describe US workers in US jobs. Remote pay for Nigeria-based workers is usually well below US local pay.
The Nigeria figures come from Plane, a global HR and payroll platform. It says the figure is base salary, excluding benefits, but doesn't publish its method or a date, so treat it as a rough indicator. The $26,357 median works out to about $2,196 a month, or roughly ₦2,991,000 a month at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN, 23 October 2026).
For pay by role, see our SDR salary guide and account executive salary guide.
Example (hypothetical): working out what a base-pay offer is worth
Suppose an offer reads "OTE $36,000, 60/40 split, paid monthly in USD, contractor".
- Base: 60% of $36,000 = $21,600 a year, or $1,800 a month
- Variable at 100% of quota: $14,400 a year, or $1,200 a month
- Guaranteed monthly income in naira: $1,800 × ₦1,362 = about ₦2,452,000 (CBN rate, 23 October 2026), before withdrawal fees and tax
Plan your budget on the $1,800, not the $3,000. New reps often hit well below 100% of quota in their first months, and many companies set quotas expecting only part of the team to reach them.
Questions to ask before you accept a base-pay sales offer
Ask these in writing (email or the offer document), not only on a call:
- Is the base paid every month regardless of quota attainment?
- What is the quota, and what share of the current team hit it last quarter?
- Is there a ramp period with reduced quota or guaranteed commission? How long does it last?
- When is commission paid: monthly, quarterly, or when the customer pays?
- Are there clawbacks if a customer cancels or doesn't pay?
- Is any draw recoverable or non-recoverable?
- Which currency is the base paid in, and through which platform (Deel, Remote, direct wire, Payoneer)?
- Am I a contractor or an employee, and who pays for equipment and internet?
- Which hours must I be online, and in which time zone?
- What notice period applies on either side?
How a company answers matters as much as what it says. Clear, written answers suggest a mature sales organisation. Vague replies about "unlimited potential" suggest the base may be thinner than advertised. For a full offer checklist, see how to evaluate a remote sales job offer.
Nigeria-specific things that affect base-pay sales roles
Contractor or employee
Many international companies hire Nigeria-based sales staff as independent contractors, as the Worldpackers advert above shows. That usually means no pension, no paid leave unless stated, and responsibility for your own tax. Some companies use an employer of record (EOR), a third party that employs you legally in Nigeria on the company's behalf. Our guide to contractor vs EOR employee arrangements explains the difference, and tax for remote workers in Nigeria covers what you owe.
Getting the base paid into Nigeria
A base in dollars is only useful if you can receive it at a fair cost. Check the fees on the payout route before you sign. See how to receive dollar payments in Nigeria for Payoneer, Wise, Grey, Raenest, Deel and others.
Time zones for calling roles
Outbound sales to US buyers means working their business hours. As of 27 October 2026, 9am to 5pm US Eastern is 2pm to 10pm in Lagos. From 1 November 2026, when the US moves to EST, it becomes 3pm to 11pm. UK hours (9am to 5pm GMT) are 10am to 6pm in Lagos this winter. Central European roles match Lagos time in winter. EMEA-focused roles are often the easiest fit for evenings and family life.
Power and internet for live calls
A dropped call during a discovery meeting costs you the meeting, and sometimes the role. Sales teams that use dialers such as Aircall or Salesforce-integrated phone systems expect stable audio. Budget for an inverter or solar backup, two internet routes (a MiFi plus a phone hotspot on a different network), and a USB headset with noise cancelling. Some employers ask for a voice sample or a call recording at the application stage, so test your setup first.
Common mistakes when searching for base-pay sales jobs
- Taking US pay ranges at face value. The range in a US advert usually doesn't apply to you. Ask what the company pays for your location.
- Treating OTE as income. Budget on the base. Commission is upside until you have three or four months of results.
- Ignoring the location line. "Remote" alone often means remote within one country. Look for "worldwide", "EMEA", "Africa" or "Nigeria". Our guide to verifying whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents shows how.
- Accepting a recoverable draw as if it were a base. If a slow first quarter leaves you owing the company money, it was never a base.
- Paying to start. No legitimate employer charges for training, a starter kit or "account activation". Read our guide to remote job scams in Nigeria before replying to unsolicited offers on WhatsApp or Telegram.
- Sending a generic CV. Sales hiring managers look for numbers: calls a day, meetings booked, conversion rates, revenue. Customer service experience counts if you quantify it.
Frequently asked questions
Do remote sales jobs open to Nigerians pay a base salary?
Some do, and many don't. Established software, fintech and B2B companies commonly pay a base plus commission, while coaching and "online business" offers are often commission-only. As of October 2026, Worldpackers advertised a worldwide remote sales role with a $1,200 monthly base plus commission. Check each advert's pay and location lines.
What does OTE mean in a remote sales job advert?
OTE means on-target earnings: your base salary plus the commission you'd earn at exactly 100% of quota. It isn't guaranteed. Always ask for the base figure and the split (for example 60/40), because two jobs with the same OTE can have very different guaranteed pay.
How much base salary do remote SDRs in Nigeria earn?
Plane, a payroll platform, estimates a median base of $26,357 a year for remote SDRs in Nigeria, with a 10th to 90th percentile range of $11,772 to $44,506. It doesn't publish its method, so treat these as rough figures. Actual offers depend on the company, your experience and the market you sell into.
Is a draw against commission the same as a base salary?
No. A recoverable draw is an advance you pay back from future commission, so in a bad month you can end up owing money. A non-recoverable draw is closer to a base, but it often lasts only a few months. Ask which type applies and get it in writing.
Can I get a base-salary remote sales job without sales experience?
Yes, but entry-level base-pay roles are competitive. SDR, inbound inside sales and account management roles sometimes accept people with customer service, retail or call-centre backgrounds, especially if you show numbers. Our guide to entry-level remote sales jobs with no experience covers realistic routes in.
Will I be an employee or a contractor?
Most Nigeria-based remote sales workers for foreign companies are contractors, though some companies hire through an employer of record. The contract type affects benefits, leave, tax and notice. Confirm it before signing.
What should I do if a "base salary" sales job asks me to pay a fee?
Don't pay. Legitimate employers don't charge for training, starter kits or onboarding. Stop responding, keep a record of the messages, and report the advert to the platform where you found it.
Key takeaways
- A base salary is fixed pay you receive regardless of results. Look for a stated base figure or an OTE with a stated split.
- SDR, account executive, account manager and customer success roles carry a base far more often than "closer" or independent agent roles.
- Search salary-filtered job boards and public applicant tracking systems with terms like "OTE", "base salary", "EMEA" and "worldwide", then confirm on the employer's own advert.
- Pay ranges in US adverts usually apply to US residents. For Nigeria, rough benchmarks such as Plane's $26,357 median SDR base are more relevant, and offers vary widely.
- Before accepting, get written answers on base guarantees, quota, ramp, payment currency, contract type and working hours.
