Young applicants waiting office lobby

Yes, you can get a remote sales job from Nigeria with no sales experience. The roles that take beginners are mostly sales development representative (SDR), appointment setter and lead generation jobs, and you'll usually work US or European hours on a base salary plus commission. What you can't count on is "no experience" meaning no proof at all. Most employers still want evidence that you can talk to strangers, write a clear message and handle rejection.

Many ads that say "no experience needed" are US insurance or commission-only roles that don't hire from Nigeria, and they don't pay a salary either. This guide uses real ads we checked in October 2026 to show what entry-level remote sales jobs actually ask for. It covers how base pay, commission and OTE work, which ads to walk away from, and a step-by-step plan for landing your first remote sales job when your CV has no sales title on it yet.

Quick answer

Entry-level remote sales jobs open to Nigerians are usually SDR, business development representative (BDR), appointment setter or lead generation roles with foreign companies. Expect US or European working hours, a modest base salary plus commission, and a contractor agreement rather than employment. Truly zero-experience ads exist but are rare. Customer-facing work, a free sales certificate and sample outreach messages count as proof. Avoid commission-only offers and anyone who asks you to pay.

What "no experience" means in a remote sales job ad

In a sales ad, "no experience" almost always means no sales job title. It rarely means no evidence. Recruiters hiring junior SDRs care about three things: whether you can hold a confident conversation in English, whether you write short, clear messages, and whether you keep going after 30 people in a row say no.

Read the experience line in an ad as a range:

  • "No experience required" or "graduate": the company plans to train you. You still compete on communication, grades, attitude and written answers.
  • "6 months to 1 year in a customer-facing role": customer service, retail, POS agency work, hospitality, call centre and campus marketing usually count. You don't need the word "sales" on your CV.
  • "2+ years SDR/BDR experience": not a beginner role, whatever the "junior" tag on an aggregator says. Apply only if you can show strong related results.

In our October 2026 checks, the ads that were truly open to beginners and to applicants in Nigeria were outnumbered by ads that wanted one to two years of outbound experience. That's normal. Your first remote sales job often comes from showing that customer-facing work you've already done is sales work under another name.

Entry-level remote sales roles you can target from Nigeria

These are the job titles worth searching for. They differ in how much talking, writing and closing you do.

RoleWhat you actually doHow open to beginners
Sales development representative (SDR)Find and contact prospects, book meetings for closersMain entry route; many ads want 0 to 2 years
Business development representative (BDR)Similar to SDR, often more outboundSimilar to SDR
Appointment setterCall or message leads, book sales callsOften beginner-friendly; check the pay terms
Lead generation specialistResearch prospects, build lists, send outreachGood first step, especially for writers
Inside sales representativeHandle inbound enquiries and close small dealsUsually wants some sales history
Account executive (AE)Runs demos and closes dealsNot entry-level; this is where SDRs go next

The SDR is the standard first rung in B2B sales (selling to businesses, usually software). Our sales development representative career guide covers the skills, tools and progression in detail. If you prefer calling to writing, see the appointment setter role guide. There is also a separate guide to lead generation jobs for beginners, which publishes with this series.

If you want the wider picture of every remote sales path (including senior ones), our overview of the best remote sales jobs for Nigerians covers that. This article sticks to the first job.

What real entry-level sales ads asked for in October 2026

Remote eligibility changes from week to week, so treat these as examples of what to look for, not a list of companies hiring you. We checked each ad on 27 October 2026. Before applying, open the live ad and confirm it still accepts applicants living in Nigeria.

A true graduate role open worldwide: Canonical

Canonical (the company behind Ubuntu) had a Graduate Sales Development Representative ad listed as "Home based - Worldwide" as of October 2026. The ad sets no minimum years of experience and says the company has hired people without a university degree. In return, it asks a lot on the application form:

  • your degree result (or expected result), with the grading system
  • your secondary school maths and native-language performance, backed by scores or rankings
  • examples of personal tech projects and of helping someone solve a technical problem
  • written answers that must be your own words (the ad says AI-generated content disqualifies you)

Duties include inbound enquiries by email, phone and chat, outbound campaigns and prospect research. The ad also requires travel to in-person company events 4 to 6 times a year, each lasting 1 to 2 weeks, which may involve visas. On a Nigerian passport, that means planning for visa applications several times a year. No salary is listed; the ad says base pay varies by location, experience and skills.

An Africa-friendly SDR role with stated pay: Scale Army

Scale Army Careers, a remote recruiting and placement firm, had a Sales Development Representative (GHL) role listed on Remote Rocketship for candidates in Nigeria, Egypt, Ethiopia, South Africa and Argentina, as of October 2026. It paid $1,300 to $1,600 a month plus commission, worked 9am to 5pm US Eastern time, and asked for 2+ years of outbound sales experience. The application asked for an English-language PDF CV and a recorded video.

This role isn't for total beginners, but it's a useful pay marker. It shows what a Nigeria-eligible SDR job paid in dollars, and what you'll be up against after your first year.

A "worldwide" ad that needs checking: Kaiko Systems

Kaiko Systems, a German maritime software company, posted a Sales Development Representative ad on 22 October 2026. It wanted at least one year in a sales, outreach or customer-facing role, and said it values drive and coachability over experience. The page said "Remote (worldwide)", but its structured job data pointed to Germany only, and the contract was a 12-month fixed term. When an ad sends mixed signals like this, email the recruiter and ask whether they can contract someone living in Nigeria before you spend an evening on the application.

The full skill of reading location lines (EMEA, "worldwide", US-only) is covered in our guide on checking whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents.

How pay works in entry-level remote sales

Sales pay has two parts, and the second part is the one people misread.

  • Base salary: the fixed amount you get every month whatever you sell.
  • Commission or bonus: extra pay tied to meetings booked, deals closed or revenue.
  • OTE (on-target earnings): base plus the commission you'd earn if you hit 100% of your target. OTE is a projection, not a promise.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics says most employers pay sales representatives a mix of salary and commission, or salary plus bonuses. The same page gives a median of $76,460 a year (May 2025) for US wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives. That's a US benchmark for people living and working in the US. It is not what a Nigeria-based beginner will be offered. Remote pay for Nigeria-based workers is usually well below US local pay.

A more realistic marker is the Scale Army ad above: $1,300 to $1,600 a month base for an experienced SDR. At WorkRemote's house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), that's about ₦1.77 million to ₦2.18 million a month before commission, fees and tax. A true beginner should expect the lower end of what ads like that pay, or below it, at first. Our SDR salary guide has more pay data.

Example (hypothetical): reading an OTE offer

Example (hypothetical): an offer says "$1,000 base, $1,800 OTE, paid per qualified meeting." That means $800 of your monthly pay depends on hitting target. If you book half your target, you earn about $1,400, not $1,800. Before accepting, ask:

  1. What percentage of current SDRs hit target last quarter?
  2. What counts as a "qualified" meeting, and who decides?
  3. Is commission paid monthly, or only after the customer pays?
  4. Is the target reduced during the first one to three months while you ramp up?

A recruiter who won't answer these questions is telling you something. For a fuller checklist, see the guide to evaluating a remote sales job offer.

Commission-only and "no experience needed" ads: what to check

Search "entry-level remote sales jobs no experience" and many results are US insurance or financial products roles that promise big first-year earnings, weekly commission and "no cold calling". Most of them require you to live in the US and hold a state licence, and many pay commission only. They are not open to someone in Lagos or Enugu, whatever the "remote" tag says.

Commission-only sales is not automatically a scam, but it is a high-risk first job. You carry all the risk, and you can work 160 hours in a month and earn nothing. Our guide to commission-only remote sales jobs covers when they can make sense. For a first role, we'd point you towards remote sales jobs with a base salary.

Walk away if an ad or "recruiter":

  • asks you to pay for training, a starter kit, a licence "processing fee" or software
  • wants you to recruit friends to earn (that's a pyramid structure, not sales)
  • interviews you only on Telegram or WhatsApp, with no company email or website
  • promises a specific large income before you've had a single interview
  • asks for your BVN, bank login or card details before a signed contract

Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria has the full list of red flags.

How to get a remote sales job with no experience: step by step

This is the plan we'd give a friend starting from zero. It takes most people several weeks, not several days.

  1. List the sales you've already done. POS agency, selling on Instagram or WhatsApp, a family shop, campus event tickets, church fundraising, customer service upsells, telemarketing for a bank. Each one shows you've persuaded someone to pay or commit.
  2. Turn those into numbers. "Sold 40 hair products in a month through WhatsApp status" beats "good communication skills".
  3. Take one free sales course with a certificate. HubSpot Academy's Inbound Sales course is free, runs about three hours across seven lessons, and ends with a certification exam. It teaches the identify, connect, explore and advise method many SaaS sales teams use.
  4. Learn the basics of a CRM. Salesforce's Trailhead is free and lets you practise in a hands-on environment. "Comfortable logging calls and updating pipeline stages in Salesforce" is a line SDR hiring managers look for.
  5. Build a small proof pack (details below).
  6. Rewrite your CV for sales. Put numbers first, add the certificate and CRM practice, and remove anything unrelated that takes up space.
  7. Apply where beginners are accepted. Search for "graduate SDR", "junior SDR", "BDR", "appointment setter" and "lead generation", and filter for Nigeria, Africa, EMEA or worldwide.
  8. Prepare for the role-play. Most sales interviews include a mock call. Practise it out loud before the interview.

Build transferable proof you can show

A customer service background is one of the shortest routes into sales, because you already handle objections and use ticketing or CRM tools. If that's you, our guide on moving from customer service to remote sales goes further.

If you have no work history at all, use projects. Volunteer to find customers for a small business you know, book meetings for a friend's agency, or run outreach for a student society. Track what you sent, how many replied and what happened. That spreadsheet is experience.

Make a simple sales proof pack

A proof pack is two or three documents you can link in an application or share in an interview. Keep it in one Google Drive folder with sharing set to "anyone with the link".

  • A prospect list: 20 to 30 real companies that fit a product you admire, with the job title you'd contact and one reason each might buy.
  • Three sample cold emails: short, specific and written for those prospects.
  • A two-minute recorded mock call: you introducing a product and handling one objection. Record on your phone in a quiet room.

Example (hypothetical) cold email for a scheduling software company:

Subject: Missed bookings at [Clinic name]

Hi Dr Adeyemi, I noticed [Clinic name] takes appointments by phone only. Clinics that add online booking usually cut no-shows because patients get automatic reminders. Would a 15-minute call next Tuesday be useful to see if that fits your front desk?

Four sentences, one reason, one clear ask. That's what SDR hiring managers want to see.

Write answers that sound like you

Some employers, Canonical among them, now disqualify applications that look AI-written. Use AI to check grammar if you must, but write your own answers and use your own examples. A specific, slightly rough answer beats a polished generic one.

Prepare for the interview and role-play

Expect questions like "Sell me this pen", "How would you handle 'send me an email' as a brush-off?" and "Tell me about a time you were rejected repeatedly." Our SDR interview questions guide has sample answers, and the guide to remote sales role-play assessments covers mock calls in detail.

If you'd like help with the CV and interview stage, WorkRemote Premium (₦29,999 a month) includes a team member rewriting your CV and LinkedIn profile, applications made on your behalf and one-on-one interview prep. Premium also comes with an interview-invite guarantee in the first week, which is an interview invitation, not a job offer.

Working US or European sales hours from Nigeria

Most remote sales jobs follow the customer's working day, not yours. Plan around it before you apply.

MarketTypical shiftLagos time (from 1 November 2026)
US East (9am to 5pm EST)Afternoon to late night3pm to 11pm
UK (9am to 5pm GMT)Normal day, shifted10am to 6pm
Central Europe (9am to 5pm CET)Normal day9am to 5pm

In US summer (EDT), the same US Eastern shift runs 2pm to 10pm in Lagos. In UK summer (BST), London and Lagos are on the same time.

Sales is a calling job, so your setup matters more than in writing roles:

  • Power: an inverter or solar backup that lasts a full shift. A call that drops mid-pitch costs you the meeting.
  • Internet: two connections, for example a fibre or 4G router plus a MiFi or phone hotspot from a different network.
  • A headset with a noise-cancelling microphone: generator noise and street traffic carry on calls.
  • A quiet room for your hours: for US shifts, that means evenings, when the house is often loudest.

Night shifts for US clients are sustainable for some people and draining for others. If you have a choice early on, UK or European-facing roles are easier on your sleep.

Getting paid and your contract status

Most foreign companies hiring Nigeria-based SDRs pay you as an independent contractor, either directly or through a platform such as Deel or Remote. Some use an employer of record (EOR), which makes you an employee of a local entity on paper. The difference affects leave, notice and tax; our guide to contractor versus employee status explains it.

For receiving dollars (Payoneer, Grey, Wise, domiciliary accounts and their fees), see how to receive dollar payments in Nigeria. Commission sometimes arrives later than base pay, so check your contract's payment dates. Income from foreign clients is still taxable in Nigeria; our remote work tax guide covers that.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a remote sales job in Nigeria with no experience at all?

Yes, but it's competitive. Graduate SDR programmes and some appointment setter roles take people with no sales job history. Most still expect proof of communication skills, such as customer-facing work, a sales certificate or sample outreach.

What is the easiest remote sales job to start with?

Appointment setting and lead generation are usually the easiest to enter, followed by SDR roles. Appointment setters book calls for a closer. Lead generation specialists research and contact prospects. Both teach the basics an SDR needs.

How much do entry-level remote sales jobs pay Nigerians?

It varies widely, and many ads don't publish pay. As one marker, a Nigeria-eligible SDR ad asking for 2+ years' experience paid $1,300 to $1,600 a month plus commission as of October 2026. Beginners should expect the lower end or below at first, and should always ask what share of pay is guaranteed.

What does OTE mean in a sales job?

OTE means on-target earnings: base salary plus the commission you'd earn by hitting 100% of your target. It's not guaranteed. Ask what percentage of the current team actually hits target.

Are commission-only remote sales jobs worth it for beginners?

Usually not as a first job. With commission only, you can work a full month and earn nothing, and many such ads are US-only or tied to pyramid-style recruiting. A role with a base salary is safer while you learn.

Do I need a degree to get a remote sales job?

Usually not. Many SDR ads don't require a degree, and Canonical's graduate SDR ad says it has hired people without one. Some employers still ask for grades, so be ready to explain your results.

Do I need to speak another language?

No, English is enough for many roles, especially those selling to the US and UK. A lot of European SDR ads do require German, French, Danish or Italian, so a second language widens your options considerably.

Will I have to work at night?

If you sell to US customers, yes. A 9am to 5pm US Eastern shift runs 3pm to 11pm in Lagos in winter and 2pm to 10pm in summer. UK and European-facing roles run close to normal Nigerian office hours.

Key takeaways

  • Entry-level remote sales jobs open to Nigerians are mainly SDR, BDR, appointment setter and lead generation roles with foreign companies.
  • "No experience" usually means no sales job title, not no proof. Customer-facing work, a free certificate and a small proof pack fill the gap.
  • Pay is base plus commission. OTE is a target, not a promise, so ask what share of pay is guaranteed and how many reps hit target.
  • Many "no experience needed" sales ads are US-only, licence-based or commission-only. Never pay to get a sales job.
  • Plan for US or European hours, with backup power, two internet connections and a good headset.
