The best remote writing jobs for Nigerians in 2026 are technical writing, copywriting, content and SEO writing, business and proposal writing, and specialist writing in finance or health. Technical writing and conversion copywriting usually pay best. Content writing and editing are easier to get into, but more people compete for them.

The open question is which of these jobs you can get from Lagos, Ibadan or Jos, and how to tell a real opening from a "write 50 articles for $5" trap. This guide compares the main remote writing roles by difficulty, pay and how employers word eligibility. It shows two real job ads checked in October 2026 and explains business writing, a route that many writing guides skip. It ends with a workflow you can start on this week. Where pay figures appear, we say where they come from and whether they apply to someone hired from Nigeria.

Quick answer

Nigerians can get remote writing jobs as employees or contractors with international and Nigerian companies, and as freelancers on platforms or through direct clients. Technical writing, copywriting and specialist business writing pay the most. Content writing and proofreading are easier to start but more crowded. Before you apply, confirm the ad accepts applicants living in Nigeria, and never pay anyone to get a writing job.

Which remote writing jobs suit Nigerians best?

Writing travels well across borders. Your output is a document, a page or a script, so an employer in Berlin or Boston can judge it without meeting you. Nigerian writers also work in English, the language most remote writing jobs ask for.

The other side is competition. Every English speaker with a laptop can apply for a "content writer" opening. The roles that pay better ask for something on top of writing: a technical subject, sales results, research skills or knowledge of a regulated field.

The table below compares the main roles. "Entry difficulty" is our editorial judgement, based on what ads for each role usually ask for. It is not a statistic.

Content writer

Content writers produce articles, guides and newsletters for a company's website or clients. It is the most common entry point, and so the most crowded. You stand out with a clear niche (fintech, SaaS, travel, health) and published samples that rank or get read. Our content writer career guide covers skills and tools, and the content writer salary page shows the pay data we have.

SEO writer

SEO writers research what people search for and write pages that answer it. Employers expect you to know keyword research, search intent, internal linking and basic Google Search Console. This is a step up from general content writing, and many content jobs now require it. The planned guide on becoming a remote SEO content writer goes into the detail.

Copywriter

Copywriters write words meant to make someone act: sign up, buy or reply to an email. Remote copywriting jobs often ask for experience on specific channels such as Meta and Google ads, email and CRM messages, landing pages and in-app text. Pay follows results, so a portfolio showing conversion or click-through improvements is worth more than a nice-looking PDF. See the copywriter career guide.

Technical writer

Technical writers explain software, hardware or processes so users can follow them: installation guides, API references, knowledge-base articles. This is one of the better-paid writing roles. Remote employers often want Git, Markdown, docs-as-code tools and some comfort with the command line. Developers who write well, and writers who learn to read code, both fit here. Read the technical writer guide and the technical writer pay page.

UX writer

UX writers write the short text inside products: buttons, onboarding screens, error messages. The work is small in word count and heavy on research and testing with designers. UX writing jobs are fewer and usually go to people who already have product or copywriting experience. Start with the UX writer career guide.

Grant writer and ghostwriter

Grant writers prepare funding applications for nonprofits, schools and research teams. Nigerian development-sector experience counts here, because donors such as foundations and international agencies use similar formats. Ghostwriters write books, LinkedIn posts and articles that appear under a client's name. The work is mostly freelance and depends on referrals. See the guides for grant writers and ghostwriters.

Editor and proofreader

Editors improve structure, argument and style. Proofreaders catch errors before publication. Good editors are in steady demand because so many first drafts are now produced with AI and still need a human to fix them. If you choose this route, learn one major style guide properly (AP, Chicago or a company style guide). Our editor and proofreader guides explain how to start.

Specialist writing: medical, financial and translation

Specialist writers combine writing with subject knowledge, and that combination usually earns more. A pharmacist who can write regulatory documents, or an ICAN-qualified accountant who can explain tax products, is competing in a much smaller field than a general blogger. Separate guides on remote medical writing and financial writing are planned for this series. If you also work in French, Yoruba, Hausa or Igbo, look at our translator career guide.

How to find remote business writing jobs

Business writing means documents that companies use to win work, inform decisions or run their operations. Examples are proposals and tender responses, reports, case studies, white papers, internal communications, policy documents and investor updates. This work rarely gets advertised as "business writer", which is one reason many people miss it.

Search with the job titles companies actually use:

  • Proposal writer or bid writer (consultancies, construction, IT services)
  • Communications specialist or internal communications manager
  • B2B content writer or content marketing writer
  • Case study writer or customer marketing writer
  • Report writer, research writer or knowledge management specialist
  • Grant writer or development officer (nonprofits)

Nigerian professionals are often closer to this work than they think. If you have written board papers at a bank, project reports for an NGO or tender documents for an engineering firm, you have business writing samples. Strip out confidential details and turn two of them into public samples. Bid and proposal writing has its own planned guide on remote proposal writer jobs.

Three places tend to have business writing work. B2B software companies need case studies and white papers. Consultancies and development organisations need reports. Fintech and professional-services firms need clear customer documents. Look on company career pages under "Marketing", "Communications" or "Business development" as well as "Content".

What real remote writing ads look like (checked October 2026)

The two ads below are examples of how eligibility and requirements appear in practice. We opened both on 27 October 2026. Openings close and eligibility changes, so check the live ad before applying. WorkRemote has no relationship with either company.

A Nigerian employer: Moniepoint's remote Copywriter role

As of October 2026, fintech company Moniepoint's Copywriter ad on its Greenhouse board is listed as "Remote, Nigeria". The role covers copy for the app, website, CRM, social media and performance ads on Google, Meta, TikTok and LinkedIn. It asks for at least three years of professional copywriting experience, a portfolio that shows range across channels, and experience writing scripts for motion graphics.

The hiring process in the ad is a recruiter call, then a take-home assessment, then a final interview where you present that assessment. The ad gives no salary figure, only "attractive salary" plus pension, health insurance and an annual bonus. Moniepoint's full jobs board lists other "Remote, Nigeria" roles too. Nigerian companies hiring remotely within Nigeria are a real route that many dollar-focused writers ignore.

A worldwide employer: Canonical's Technical Author roles

Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, advertises Technical Author roles as "Home based - Worldwide", and the ad says the roles are "open to candidates across the globe". As of October 2026 the ad mentions dozens of positions at levels from graduate to senior staff. Authors document products, customer-facing product suites or internal operations such as HR handbooks.

The ad asks for a bachelor's degree or equivalent, familiarity with Linux, the command line, Git, Sphinx and reStructuredText, and documentation samples. It mentions travel to in-person events a few times a year (budget for a passport and visa applications) and a $2,000 yearly learning budget. No salary is listed. The ad says pay depends on location, experience and performance.

What these two ads teach you

  • Look for the location line first. "Remote, Nigeria" and "Home based - Worldwide" are clear. "Remote, US" or "Remote (UK only)" usually are not, as our planned guide on why some remote jobs are closed to Nigerians explains.
  • Expect a writing test. Take-home assessments are standard for writing roles. They are fine as long as the employer doesn't ask for payment or a long piece of unpaid production work. See the planned guide to completing a remote writing assessment.
  • Expect "pay depends on location". Worldwide employers often set pay by country, so the figure you are offered may be lower than for the same role in the US.

How much do remote writers earn?

Nobody publishes reliable pay data for Nigeria-based remote writers, so treat any single "average" figure with suspicion. The most solid public figures are US government benchmarks. They tell you how employers value each role, not what you will be offered from Nigeria.

Occupation (US)Median annual paySource and period
Technical writers$90,390BLS, May 2025
Writers and authors$76,910BLS, May 2025

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median pay for technical writers was $90,390 in May 2025, and growth from 2025 to 2035 is projected at 1%. For writers and authors, the median was $76,910, with about 65% self-employed. The BLS projects little or no employment change to 2035 and links slower growth partly to the use of AI for writing.

Three points for Nigerian readers:

  • These are US medians for people working in the US. Companies hiring from Nigeria usually pay less than US local rates, often a lot less, especially for contractor roles.
  • The gap between technical writing and general writing exists in the US too. Writing about a complex subject pays more wherever you live.
  • Most writers are self-employed. Freelancing is the normal model in this field, not a fallback.

Example (hypothetical): A Lagos-based content writer signs a contract for $1,200 a month with a foreign SaaS company. At WorkRemote's house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), that is about ₦1,634,000 a month before transfer fees and tax. This is an illustration of the maths, not a typical salary.

For role-by-role figures, use our salary guides. For how dollars reach your account and what each app charges, read how to receive dollar payments in Nigeria.

Employee, contractor or freelancer: how writing jobs are set up

Remote writing work from Nigeria usually comes in one of three forms, and each one affects your pay, stability and taxes:

  • Employee through an employer of record (EOR): a foreign company employs you through a service such as Deel or Remote, sometimes with leave and benefits.
  • Contractor: you invoice one company each month, usually in dollars. You get no benefits and handle your own tax.
  • Freelancer: you work for several clients per project or per word, through platforms or direct pitching.

Many good writing jobs are contractor roles, and that is normal. Read contractor or employee when a foreign company hires you before you sign anything. Tax on foreign income has its own page: tax for remote workers in Nigeria.

AI and remote writing: what has changed

Low-end writing demand has fallen. Jobs that paid for 500-word generic blog posts have shrunk because clients generate those drafts with AI tools. The BLS writers outlook mentioned above points the same way.

Demand has moved towards work AI does badly on its own: original reporting and interviews, subject-matter accuracy, editing AI drafts into something publishable, brand voice, and writing that has to hold up legally or technically. That is good news for writers with a specialism and bad news for writers selling volume.

What this means for you:

  • Use AI tools openly where clients allow it, and disclose it. Some clients ban them, and some check.
  • Build samples that show judgement: an interview-based article, a rewritten help page with before-and-after notes, a case study with real numbers.
  • Consider AI-adjacent roles such as editing AI output. The planned guide on AI writing editor jobs covers this.

Nigeria-specific things to sort out before you apply

Power and internet

Writing is less demanding than video calls, but deadlines don't move when NEPA takes light. Keep an inverter or solar setup that runs a laptop and router for a full working day, and have two ways to get online, such as a MiFi plus your phone's hotspot. Save work to the cloud (Google Docs, Notion) so a dead laptop doesn't cost you a draft.

Time zones

Most writing is asynchronous, which suits Nigeria well. You deliver by a deadline rather than sitting online at set hours. Meetings still happen. Lagos (WAT, UTC+1) is one hour ahead of London from 25 October 2026 until late March, five hours ahead of US Eastern now, and six hours ahead from 1 November 2026. A 10am New York editorial call is 4pm in Lagos in winter.

Getting paid and identity checks

Employers and platforms will ask for ID, and payment services will need your BVN and NIN to match your name. Open a domiciliary account or a dollar account with a fintech app before your first invoice, not after.

Scams aimed at writers

Writers get targeted with fake "test articles" that are really free work, "registration fees" for writing jobs, and Telegram groups selling access to "verified" writing accounts. Renting someone else's Upwork or Fiverr account breaks platform rules and can get you locked out without your earnings. Be careful with "academic writing" gigs too. Writing students' assignments for them is treated as misconduct by universities, and clients in that market often disappear without paying. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria lists the warning signs.

Where to look for remote writing jobs

Use a mix of channels instead of relying on one:

  • Remote job boards that state eligibility. Our own remote writing job listings show where applicants may live for each role. WorkRemote reviews listings and aims to publish genuine remote roles open to applicants from Nigeria, but can't check every detail, and employers decide who they hire.
  • Company career pages. Many companies post on Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby or Workable boards. Search those sites for "writer", "copywriter" or "technical author" plus "remote".
  • Freelance platforms. Upwork and Fiverr both work from Nigeria. Expect fees and paid bids, and expect low rates at first while you build reviews.
  • Direct pitching. Writers often get their best-paying clients by pitching companies whose content is weak. The planned guide on finding international content writing clients explains how.
  • Communities. Writing and documentation communities (Write the Docs for technical writers, niche Slack and LinkedIn groups) share openings before they reach the big boards.

A seven-step plan to get your first remote writing job

  1. Choose one role and one niche from the table above, for example "SEO writer for fintech" or "technical writer for developer tools".
  2. Read two or three live ads for that role and list the tools and skills they repeat.
  3. Create three samples aimed at those ads. If you have no clients, publish on your own blog, Medium or LinkedIn. The planned guide on building a writing portfolio shows how.
  4. Rewrite your CV around writing outcomes: pieces published, traffic or sign-ups gained, documents delivered. Say "CV", but match the country's format.
  5. Apply to 5 to 10 roles a week that clearly accept Nigeria, and adapt your first paragraph to each one.
  6. Treat every writing test like real work: follow the brief, the word count and any style guide exactly.
  7. Track every application and follow up once after a week.

Frequently asked questions

Can Nigerians get remote writing jobs that pay in dollars?

Yes. International employers and clients pay Nigerian writers in dollars when the role is open to Nigeria. Worldwide employers such as Canonical (as of October 2026) and freelance clients on global platforms pay in foreign currency, but always confirm the location line in the ad first. Our page on remote jobs that pay in dollars covers this in more depth.

Which remote writing job pays the most?

Among the roles in this guide, technical writing usually pays the most, followed by conversion copywriting and specialist medical or financial writing. US BLS figures for May 2025 put the median for technical writers ($90,390) above writers and authors ($76,910). Pay offered to Nigeria-based workers is usually lower than these US figures.

Do I need a degree to get a remote writing job?

Not always. Many content, copywriting and freelance roles care more about samples than degrees, though some employers, including Canonical's Technical Author ad, ask for a bachelor's degree or equivalent. A planned guide covers remote writing jobs that do not require a degree.

Is content writing still worth it with AI?

Yes, if you move beyond generic articles. AI has reduced demand for cheap, high-volume blog posts. Writers who add research, interviews, subject expertise, editing or brand voice are still being hired.

How do I find remote business writing jobs?

Search for the titles businesses use: proposal or bid writer, B2B content writer, case study writer, communications specialist and grant writer. Check company career pages in B2B software, consulting and fintech, and turn your past reports or proposals into anonymised samples.

Are online writing jobs in Nigeria legit?

Many are, but writing is a common target for scams. Walk away from any job that charges a registration fee, asks you to rent someone else's platform account, or wants a long free "test" that looks like real work. Applying for a legitimate job never costs money.

How much should a beginner writer in Nigeria charge?

We haven't found reliable public data on beginner rates for Nigeria-based writers. Most beginners start low on platforms and raise rates once they have reviews and samples. The planned guide on pricing freelance writing for global clients covers how to set and raise rates.

Key takeaways

  • The strongest remote writing routes for Nigerians are technical writing, copywriting, SEO and content writing, business and proposal writing, and specialist medical or financial writing.
  • Writing combined with subject knowledge or proven sales results pays better than general content writing.
  • Business writing jobs are usually advertised under titles such as proposal writer, B2B content writer or communications specialist, not "business writer".
  • US BLS medians (May 2025: $90,390 for technical writers, $76,910 for writers and authors) are benchmarks. Pay offered from Nigeria is usually lower.
  • Read the location line of every ad, and expect a writing test as part of the hiring process.
  • Never pay to apply, and never rent another person's freelance account.
