Remote technical writer salary for Nigerians
A remote technical writer based in Nigeria can realistically aim for about $20,000 to $32,000 a year at entry level and $32,000 to $60,000 at mid-level, using Write the Docs' 2025 salary data for Asia and India as the nearest offshore comparison. In naira, $32,000 is about ₦3.6 million a month at the CBN rate on 23 October 2026.
We're upfront about the limits: we found no Africa-open technical writer ads with published pay in October 2026, and Write the Docs had too few Nigerian respondents to publish a figure. These ranges are our best estimate from the closest data that exists.

Where these figures come from
- Entry
- Write the Docs 2025 survey: 25th percentile for employees in Asia ($20,220) to the Asia and India median ($32,134). Used as the closest offshore comparison because no Nigeria figure was published.
- Mid
- Write the Docs 2025: Asia median ($32,134) to Asia 75th percentile ($59,762).
- Senior
- From the Asia 75th percentile up to the worldwide median ($93,759), which senior writers at global software companies hiring in Africa can approach. Worldwide contractor median was $58 an hour.
How that compares
Reference points from other markets. Remote pay for people in Nigeria is usually below US and UK local pay.
- India median, documentation employees (Write the Docs 2025) (writethedocs.org)$32,134 a year
- Worldwide contractor median (Write the Docs 2025) (writethedocs.org)$58 an hour
- US median, technical writers (BLS, May 2025) (bls.gov)$90,390 a year
- UK technical author, starter (nationalcareers.service.gov.uk)£27,000 a year
- UK technical author, experienced (nationalcareers.service.gov.uk)£50,000 a year
What affects your pay
How technical you are. API and developer documentation pays more than end-user help articles. Writers who can read code and test APIs earn noticeably more.
Industry. Developer tools, cloud, data and fintech companies pay best. Manufacturing and non-tech companies often pay less and may want local staff.
Employee or contractor. Contractors set hourly or monthly rates. The 2025 Write the Docs survey put the worldwide contractor median at $58 an hour and $44 at the 25th percentile.
Experience. Write the Docs' worldwide medians rose from about $66,700 at 0 to 2 years to about $104,800 at 10 to 15 years. Offshore pay starts lower but rises with experience in a similar way.
Company pay policy. Some global companies pay one rate everywhere; many adjust by country. Ask which applies.
Negotiating your offer
Use data. Mention the Write the Docs survey and the role's scope (API docs, docs tooling, style guide ownership). Hiring managers in docs teams usually know the survey.
If you're a contractor, quote monthly for ongoing work and per project for one-off docs sets. Agree what counts as a revision and who provides technical review.
Ask about tools and learning budget: a paid Postman, Snagit or conference ticket costs the company little and helps you.
Questions people ask
Why don't you show a Nigeria-specific figure?
The Write the Docs 2025 survey had fewer than 10 Nigerian respondents, so it didn't publish one, and we found no Africa-open ads with published pay. We use the Asia and India figures as the closest comparison.
How much is $32,000 a year in naira?
About ₦43.6 million a year, or roughly ₦3.6 million a month, at the CBN central rate of ₦1,361.34 to the dollar on 23 October 2026.
Do technical writers earn more than content writers?
Generally yes. The US median for technical writers ($90,390) is above the median for writers and authors ($76,910), and the gap is similar for remote roles.
What do freelance technical writers charge?
Write the Docs found a worldwide contractor median of $58 an hour in 2025, with the middle half between $44 and $84. Rates from Nigeria are often lower at first.

Salaries for related roles
- Content Writer
A content writer researches and writes articles, blog posts, guides, newsletters and web pages that help a business get found and trusted. Nigerians do this remotely for clients all over the world, but the low end of the market is crowded and poorly paid, so the writers who earn well pick a subject and learn SEO.
- Editor
An editor improves other people's writing so it's clear, correct and fit for its readers, from fixing grammar and consistency (copy editing) to reshaping structure and argument (developmental editing). Remote editing work is open to Nigerians, especially content editing for online publishers and freelance copy editing, but clients test hard and expect you to know a style guide cold.
- Software Engineer
A software engineer designs, writes, tests and maintains the code behind products, and it is one of the remote jobs Nigerians most often get with foreign companies. Entry-level remote roles are rare, so most people get their first two years of experience locally or through freelance work before landing a dollar-paid contract.
