Remote editor salary for Nigerians
A full-time remote content editor hired from Africa earned about $30,000 to $50,000 a year in the 2026 job ads we found, roughly ₦3.4 million to ₦5.7 million a month at the CBN rate of ₦1,361 to the dollar on 23 October 2026.
Freelance editing pays by the hour, word or page. Platforms that accept editors from any country paid $19 to $46 an hour, but volume isn't guaranteed, so annual income varies a lot. We don't publish a senior range because we found no Africa-open senior editor ads with pay.

Where these figures come from
- Entry
- Freelance platform work: ProofreadingServices.com, which accepts applicants from any country, pays $19 to $46 an hour depending on turnaround. At its base rate, 15 to 25 billable hours a week for 46 weeks comes to about $13,100 to $21,900.
- Mid
- Donorbox's full-time content editor role, $30,000 to $50,000 a year depending on experience and location, listing Nigeria among about 60 eligible African countries (September 2026).
How that compares
Reference points from other markets. Remote pay for people in Nigeria is usually below US and UK local pay.
- US median, editors (BLS, May 2025) (bls.gov)$77,920 a year
- UK copy editor, starter (nationalcareers.service.gov.uk)£24,000 a year
- UK copy editor, experienced (nationalcareers.service.gov.uk)£46,000 a year
- CIEP suggested minimum hourly rate, copyediting (2026-27) (ciep.uk)£37.11 an hour
What affects your pay
Level of edit. Developmental and line editing pay more than copy editing, which pays more than proofreading. The CIEP's 2026-27 suggested minimums show the ladder: £31.92 an hour for proofreading, £37.11 for copyediting and £42.66 for substantial or developmental editing.
Subject knowledge. Technical, medical, legal and academic editing pay more if you understand the field. The EFA's 2026 chart shows technical copyediting at $55 to $75 an hour for its mostly US members.
Direct clients vs platforms. Platforms give you work without marketing but set the rate. Direct clients, especially publishers and companies, pay more once you have a track record.
Content editor scope. Content editor jobs that include briefs, SEO, publishing and newsletters (like Donorbox's) pay a salary rather than per word.
Where the benchmarks come from. CIEP and EFA rates describe what UK and US freelancers charge in their own markets. Use them to see where the ceiling is, not as what a Nigeria-based beginner will get.
Negotiating your offer
Quote per project once you've seen the document. Ask for a sample page or the full file, check how dense it is, then price. Per-word quotes on messy text lose you money.
Make the level of edit explicit in your quote: 'copy edit to Chicago style with a style sheet, one round of queries' is a clear, priceable job. Anything that turns into rewriting is a different job.
For salaried content editor roles, ask about the range for your location and whether the role includes writing, SEO or newsletters. More scope is a reason for the upper part of the range.

Salaries for related roles
- Proofreader
A proofreader does the final check on a document before it's published or sent, catching typos, punctuation slips, inconsistencies and layout errors the writer and editor missed. You can do it remotely from Nigeria for proofreading companies and private clients abroad, but it's usually part-time, paid by the hour or word, and entry tests are strict.
- Content Writer
A content writer researches and writes articles, blog posts, guides, newsletters and web pages that help a business get found and trusted. Nigerians do this remotely for clients all over the world, but the low end of the market is crowded and poorly paid, so the writers who earn well pick a subject and learn SEO.
- Copywriter
A copywriter writes words that get people to act: ads, landing pages, product descriptions, emails, scripts and website copy. It's one of the easier creative jobs to do remotely from Nigeria because the work is all text, but clients judge you on samples and a writing test, not on your English grades.
- Technical Writer
A technical writer explains how products work: API references, developer guides, help-centre articles, user manuals and internal process docs. It's one of the better-paid writing jobs you can do remotely from Nigeria, especially in software, and a public portfolio of real documentation counts for more than a degree.
