Remote product description writing jobs are real, and some are open to writers based in Nigeria. Most of the work comes as freelance or contract work for online stores, ecommerce agencies and marketplace sellers. Full-time salaried roles exist, but they are fewer and are often limited to US or European residents. Clients usually pay per word or per product, so earnings depend on volume, speed and the quality of your samples.
A product description is the short block of copy on a product page that tells a shopper what the item is, what it does and why it suits them. Stores with hundreds or thousands of products need this written, rewritten and kept consistent, and that need is what creates the work.
This guide explains the kinds of work involved, who hires and whether Nigerians can apply, and what one live worldwide ad actually pays. It also covers the rules clients expect you to know, how to build samples that win contracts, and the red flags to watch for.
Quick answer
Remote product description writers write product pages, marketplace listings and category copy for online stores, usually as freelancers or contractors. Nigerians can get this work when the ad or client accepts worldwide or Africa-based applicants. Pay is often per word. One worldwide ad we checked in October 2026 paid a typical $0.034 a word, rising with volume. To win this work you need strong English, accurate and benefit-led copy, basic SEO and a set of good samples.
What product description writing involves
Product description writing is narrower than general copywriting. You're writing for a shopper who is already on the page and deciding whether to buy, so accuracy and clarity count more than clever lines.
Clients usually ask for one or more of these:
| Work type | What you write | Typical client |
|---|---|---|
| Product page copy | Intro, benefits, specs, care notes | Shopify and WooCommerce stores |
| Marketplace listings | Titles, bullet points, longer description | Amazon, eBay and Etsy sellers |
| Catalogue rewrites | Unique copy from supplier text | Retailers with many SKUs |
| Category pages | Short SEO copy above product grids | Ecommerce SEO agencies |
| Feed descriptions | Plain, rule-compliant text for shopping ads | Stores running Google Shopping |
| AI draft editing | Fact-checking and fixing machine drafts | Brands using AI at scale |
A SKU (stock keeping unit) is one specific product variant, such as a shirt in one colour and size. Large stores often hold thousands of SKUs, and that is why some clients hire writers for months at a time.
How it differs from content writing and copywriting
Content writers mostly produce blog posts and guides. Copywriters cover ads, emails and landing pages. A product description writer works inside a strict structure, often with a word limit, a client style guide and a spreadsheet of specs. If you want the broader career picture, our remote copywriter career guide covers the skills and progression, and the content writer career guide covers long-form work.
Who hires remote product description writers, and can Nigerians apply?
Yes, Nigerians can apply when the ad accepts applicants from Nigeria, Africa or anywhere in the world. Many ecommerce writing ads don't. Read the location line before you spend time on an application.
The main types of hirer are:
- Ecommerce and SEO agencies. They write for many client stores and often hire freelance writers in batches. These are the most common source of worldwide contracts.
- Direct-to-consumer brands. These are brands that sell their own products online. They sometimes hire in-house copywriters, but those roles are often limited to US or UK residents.
- Marketplace sellers. Amazon and Etsy sellers hire writers for listings, usually through freelance platforms.
- Translation and localisation firms. They hire writers to adapt product copy for different markets, sometimes in more than one language.
- Content marketplaces and freelance platforms. Upwork, Fiverr and Freelancer carry many short product description jobs. Most are fixed-price and competitive.
A live example open worldwide
As of October 2026, Coalition Technologies, a marketing agency, was advertising a freelance copywriter role on Remotive marked "Worldwide". The duties included product descriptions, category pages, blog posts and landing pages for ecommerce and lead-generation sites. It asked for excellent English, SEO writing knowledge and preferably 2 to 4 years of non-academic professional writing experience with published samples. Ads close and terms change, so check the live listing before applying.
Worldwide, regional and country-restricted ads
Remote job ads use location labels in different ways:
| Label in the ad | What it usually means for you |
|---|---|
| Worldwide or Anywhere | Open to Nigeria unless the text says otherwise |
| Africa or EMEA | Usually open to Nigeria; check for named countries |
| US only, UK only, Canada only | Usually needs residence or work authorisation there |
| A named city (hybrid) | Not a remote role for someone in Lagos or Abuja |
EMEA stands for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Some "EMEA" ads still exclude certain African countries, so read the full text. A US-only freelance listing that pays $35 an hour is not open to you, however tempting the rate looks.
Employee, contractor or freelancer
Most product description work for Nigeria-based writers is freelance or contract work. You invoice and get paid per job, with no paid leave or pension. A small number of companies hire through an employer of record (EOR), which makes you a proper employee with benefits. Our guide to contractor versus EOR employee arrangements explains the difference and what to check in each.
How much remote product description writers earn
Pay varies widely, so use real ads rather than averages from blog posts.
Per-word pay from a real worldwide ad
The Coalition Technologies ad above set out its rates clearly (as of October 2026):
| Stage | Typical rate | Up to |
|---|---|---|
| Starting | $0.034 a word | $0.06 a word |
| After 400 live pages | $0.038 a word | $0.064 a word |
| After 800 live pages | $0.044 a word | $0.07 a word |
The ad put a 500-word page at about $17 to $30. The same ad also showed an overall figure of $20,000 to $35,000 a year. Treat that figure as the employer's own estimate. What you actually earn depends on how many pages you complete.
Example (hypothetical): what a month could look like
Assume you write 60 product and category pages of 500 words each in a month at the typical starting rate of $0.034 a word:
- 60 pages × 500 words = 30,000 words
- 30,000 × $0.034 = $1,020 a month, before platform or transfer fees
- At ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), that's roughly ₦1.39 million
This is an illustration, not a promise. Many product descriptions run only 100 to 300 words, so a 150-word description at $0.034 a word earns about $5. On per-word rates, the money comes from volume and steady repeat work, not from single pieces.
US benchmark (not what you'll be offered)
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median pay of $76,910 a year ($36.98 an hour) for writers and authors in May 2025. BLS also notes that about 65% of people in the occupation are self-employed. This figure is a benchmark for US-based workers. Contractors hired from Nigeria are usually paid well below US local rates, and per-word ecommerce work often pays less than the median suggests.
For broader pay data on writing roles, see our copywriter salary guide.
What pushes your rate up
- A niche such as skincare, supplements, electronics, auto parts or B2B equipment, where accuracy matters and fewer writers have the knowledge
- Proven SEO results or conversion improvements you can show
- Experience writing to Amazon or Google Shopping rules
- Second-language ability for localisation work
- Reliability: hitting deadlines on batches of 50 or more products
Our planned guide on pricing writing services for global clients covers how to set and raise your rates.
Skills and rules clients expect
Clients assume you can write clean English. What sets the better-paid writers apart is accuracy, structure and knowing each platform's rules.
Write for the buyer, then back it with specs
Shopify's guidance on product descriptions recommends writing for one ideal customer, turning features into benefits, swapping vague words like "high quality" for specifics, and making copy easy to scan on a phone. In practice, that means:
- Open with who the product is for and the main benefit
- Use short bullets for specs: size, material, compatibility, what's in the box
- Answer the questions that cause returns (fit, power source, care instructions)
- Write each product uniquely instead of copying the manufacturer's text
Know the Google Shopping rules
Stores that run Google Shopping ads send a product feed to Google Merchant Center. According to Google's description attribute requirements, as of October 2026:
- A description can be 1 to 5,000 characters
- Key details should come in the first 160 to 500 characters, because shoppers must click to see the rest
- Descriptions must not include prices, sale dates, shipping details, links, the company name or comparisons with other products
- All-caps words used for emphasis and decorative symbols aren't allowed
- AI-generated text should be submitted with a specific source label (the
structured_descriptionattribute)
Few writers know these rules. If you mention them in a pitch to a store that runs shopping ads, you'll come across as someone who has done the work before.
Marketplace style guides
Amazon, Etsy and eBay each set rules for titles, bullets and descriptions, and Amazon's limits vary by product category. Ask the client for the category style guide from their Seller Central account, or ask them to confirm limits, rather than relying on figures from third-party blogs.
Don't write claims the product can't support
This is where new writers get clients into trouble. The US Federal Trade Commission's advertising guidance for small businesses says advertisers need objective evidence for claims before the ad runs, and that health and safety claims generally need scientific evidence. It also says agencies that help create ads can be held responsible for misleading claims.
For you, that means you don't write "clinically proven", "cures acne" or "lasts 10 years" unless the client supplies the evidence. Ask for it. Clients in supplements and skincare will respect the question.
Basic SEO
SEO (search engine optimisation) for product pages means using the words shoppers actually search, in a natural way. You should be able to:
- Pick a main search phrase for each product and work it into the title and opening
- Write a page title tag and meta description when the client asks
- Avoid copying the same text across similar products
Our planned guide to becoming a remote SEO content writer covers keyword research in more depth.
Example (hypothetical): a weak description and a stronger one
Here's a made-up product to show the difference: a rechargeable LED desk lamp sold by an online store in the UK.
Weak version:
"This amazing high-quality lamp is the best lamp on the market. It is perfect for everyone and has many great features. Buy now and enjoy!"
Stronger version:
"Study late or work early without hunting for a socket. This rechargeable LED desk lamp runs for up to 8 hours on a full charge, with three brightness levels and a warm-to-cool colour setting for reading or screen work.
- Charges by USB-C in about 3 hours
- Folds flat to 4cm for drawers and travel bags
- Touch controls, no clicking switch
- In the box: lamp, USB-C cable, user guide"
The second version names the buyer, leads with a benefit and gives specific numbers. In a real job, every number (8 hours, 3 hours, 4cm) has to come from the client's spec sheet. Never make one up to make the copy look better.
How to build samples that win product description contracts
Clients hiring for this work want to see product descriptions, not essays or poems. You can create convincing samples before you have paid clients.
- Pick two or three niches. Choose categories you understand, such as phones and accessories, beauty products, home appliances or baby products.
- Choose real products from real stores. Take five products from a store whose current descriptions are weak.
- Rewrite each one in two formats. Write a product page version (intro plus bullets) and a marketplace version (title plus five bullets).
- Add a one-line note per sample. Explain your choices, for example: "Moved battery life to the first line because it's the top question in reviews."
- Label them honestly. Write "Sample rewrite, not commissioned" so nobody thinks you're claiming the brand as a client.
- Put them in one link. A Google Doc, Notion page or simple portfolio site with 10 to 15 samples is enough to start.

Where to find product description jobs and how to apply
Product description work is rarely posted under that exact title. Search for these terms too: "ecommerce copywriter", "product copywriter", "Amazon listing writer", "catalogue copywriter", "SEO copywriter ecommerce" and "content writer product pages".
Places to look
- Remote job boards. Filter for writing roles and check the location line on each ad. On WorkRemote, remote writing jobs open to applicants in Nigeria are listed with the company, its website and where applicants may live.
- Agency careers pages. Ecommerce SEO agencies often keep a standing freelance writer ad.
- Freelance platforms. Upwork, Fiverr and Freelancer have many small product description jobs. Upwork shows its service fee on each contract before you accept, so check it each time, because it varies.
- Direct outreach. Small Shopify stores with copied manufacturer text are good prospects. A short email with one rewritten description of their own product often works better than a long pitch.
A simple application routine
- Read the location and contract type first. Skip anything you're not eligible for.
- Match your samples to the niche in the ad (send skincare samples to a skincare brand).
- Keep the cover note to 4 to 6 lines: the niche you know, one result or skill, your link, and your available hours.
- Expect a paid or unpaid test. A short test of one or two products is normal. A request for 20 "free samples" is not.
- Follow the client's style guide exactly in the test. Writers often fail tests for ignoring a word limit or a formatting rule, not for weak writing.
For more on tests, see our planned guide to passing a remote writing assessment.
How AI is changing product description work
Many stores now use AI tools to draft product descriptions in bulk. That has cut demand for the cheapest, most generic writing and raised demand for people who can check, correct and improve machine drafts.
Clients increasingly pay for:
- Fact-checking AI drafts against spec sheets (AI tools often invent dimensions or features)
- Removing unsupported claims that could breach advertising rules
- Fixing tone so 500 products sound like one brand
- Writing prompts and templates that produce usable first drafts
The Google Merchant Center rules mentioned earlier ask stores to label AI-generated descriptions. Be honest with clients about when and how you use AI. If a client bans it, don't use it. Our planned guide on using AI tools responsibly as a remote writer covers disclosure and quality control.
Working from Nigeria: payment, time zones and power
Getting paid
Most clients pay through the freelance platform, a payment service or direct bank transfer in dollars. Before you accept a contract, ask how and when they pay (weekly, per batch or monthly) and which fees come off. Our guide on receiving dollar payments in Nigeria compares Grey, Payoneer, Wise, Deel and other options. Freelance income is also taxable, and our guide to tax for remote workers under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 explains what to keep track of.
Time zones
Product description work is mostly deadline-based, not shift-based, which suits Nigeria-based writers. You'll still need overlap for feedback. From 1 November 2026, US Eastern time is 6 hours behind Lagos, so a 10am New York check-in is 4pm in Lagos. UK clients are 1 hour behind Lagos in winter and on the same time in summer.
Power and internet
Batches have deadlines, and an outage on delivery day is your problem, not the client's. Keep an inverter or solar backup, two internet options (for example a MiFi plus a phone hotspot), and work saved in cloud documents so a laptop failure doesn't cost you a batch.
Red flags in product description job offers
Real clients pay you. Scams try to make you pay them, or get unpaid work from you.
- Registration or "training" fees before you can start writing. Genuine clients don't charge writers to work.
- "Product review" tasks on Telegram or WhatsApp that pay small amounts at first and then ask you to deposit money to access bigger tasks.
- Huge unpaid tests. One or two products is a fair test. Twenty or more is free labour.
- Requests for your BVN, bank login or card PIN. No writing client needs them.
- US-only rates offered to you anyway. An offer of $35 an hour from a stranger for beginner work, with no company website, deserves suspicion.
- Payment "by cheque" or overpayment. A client "accidentally" overpays and asks for a refund. That's a classic fraud.
Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria covers these patterns in more detail.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get product description writing jobs in Nigeria without experience?
Yes, but usually through freelance platforms or small stores first, not agency contracts. Agencies like the one in the worldwide ad above often prefer 2 to 4 years of writing experience. Strong, niche-specific samples are the fastest way to close that gap.
How much does a product description writer get paid per word?
It varies by client. One worldwide agency ad checked in October 2026 paid a typical $0.034 a word at the start, rising to a typical $0.044 a word after 800 published pages. Some clients pay per product instead, so convert their offer to a per-word figure to compare.
Do I need a degree to write product descriptions remotely?
No, not for most freelance and contract work. BLS notes that employers usually expect a bachelor's degree for salaried writing jobs in the US, but freelance clients mainly judge your samples, your accuracy and whether you follow their style guide.
Is product description writing being replaced by AI?
The cheapest, most generic work is shrinking, but the work hasn't disappeared. Stores using AI still need people to check facts, remove risky claims and keep the brand voice consistent across hundreds of products. Writers who can edit AI drafts well are in a stronger position than those who only write from scratch.
What tools do product description writers use?
Most use Google Docs or Sheets, because clients often send product data in spreadsheets. Shopify, WooCommerce or Amazon Seller Central access is sometimes given for uploading. Grammar checkers, keyword tools and the client's style guide complete the kit.
How long should a product description be?
There's no single rule. The client's template and platform decide it. Google Merchant Center allows up to 5,000 characters but advises putting key details in the first 160 to 500 characters, and many store pages use 100 to 300 words.
Should I accept payment per product or per word?
Either is fine if you calculate the effective per-word rate. A per-product fee works well for short descriptions you can write quickly. Per-word pay suits longer category pages. Always agree on how many revision rounds the fee includes.
