People working marketing agency

To become a remote SEO content writer, you need to write clearly for one reader at a time and understand why people search for a topic. You also need to learn the on-page basics that help Google understand a page, and then prove all of it with published samples. You don't need a degree or an SEO certificate to start, but you do need evidence that your articles answer searches well.

Plenty of Nigerians can already write. Far fewer can take a client's brief, work out what someone typing "best budget laptop for nursing students" actually wants, and deliver a page that is accurate, well structured and easy to skim on a phone. That gap is where SEO writing work sits.

This guide covers what the job involves and the skills employers list in their ads. It also explains what Google's own documentation says about content, how to build SEO samples without paid clients, where the work is, how pay is usually structured, and the Nigerian realities of power, internet, time zones and getting paid.

Quick answer

A remote SEO content writer researches and writes articles, guides and web pages meant to rank in search engines and genuinely help readers. To get there from Nigeria:

  • Learn search intent and on-page basics using Google's free SEO Starter Guide.
  • Practise writing from content briefs.
  • Publish three to five SEO samples on your own site or Medium.
  • Apply to remote ads that accept Nigeria-based applicants, or pitch international clients directly.

What a remote SEO content writer actually does

An SEO content writer creates content that targets a specific search query and satisfies the person behind it. The writing is the product. The SEO part decides which questions the piece must answer, how it is organised and how it connects to other pages on the site.

A typical assignment looks like this:

  1. You receive a brief with a target keyword, related terms, competitor pages, a word range and sometimes a suggested outline.
  2. You check what currently ranks to understand the search intent (are people looking to learn, compare or buy?).
  3. You research the facts from primary sources.
  4. You write a draft with a clear title, useful headings, a direct answer near the top and internal links the client asks for.
  5. You hand it over in Google Docs or straight into WordPress, and revise after editor feedback.

How the role differs from neighbouring jobs

RoleMain outputSEO depth
Content writerBlog posts, newsletters, web copyLight or none
SEO content writerArticles built around search queriesMedium: intent, structure, on-page
SEO specialistKeyword strategy, audits, technical fixesDeep, often less writing

If you mostly want general writing work, the remote content writer career guide is the better starting point. If the technical and analytics side of search interests you more than writing, read the SEO specialist career guide instead.

Skills employers ask for in remote SEO writing ads

Remote SEO writing ads ask for a fairly consistent set of skills. A full-time remote SEO Content Writer ad from NoGigiddy, which we opened in October 2026, is a typical example. It asks for strong, conversational writing and basic SEO knowledge (keywords, headings and internal linking). It also asks for fast and accurate research and reliable deadlines, says no degree is required, and lists Google Search Console, Ahrefs and Semrush as a plus rather than a requirement. That ad doesn't state which countries applicants may live in, so treat it as an example of requirements, not as proof that it hires from Nigeria.

Core writing skills

  • Clarity over decoration. Short sentences, plain words and one idea per paragraph. Readers skim on phones, and so do editors.
  • Writing for a foreign reader. Most clients are in the US, UK, Canada or Europe. Learn the spelling, currency and date conventions of the client's market: American English for a US client ("optimize", "color", "résumé"), British English for a UK one.
  • Accuracy. Clients in health, finance and software can't publish guesses. Get used to linking the original source rather than a blog that repeats it.

SEO skills a writer needs (and the ones you can skip at first)

  • Search intent. Work out whether a query wants a definition, a list, a comparison, a how-to or a product page, and shape the piece to match.
  • On-page basics. Titles, headings, meta descriptions, internal links with descriptive anchor text, and image alt text.
  • Working from briefs and optimisation tools. Agencies often send briefs built in Surfer SEO, Clearscope or Frase, and some set a target score. Learn to hit the brief without stuffing in terms.
  • Reading data. A basic grasp of Google Search Console (free) helps you see which queries a page appears for and suggest updates.

You can leave technical SEO (site speed, crawling, schema code) and link building to specialists while you build your writing reputation.

Editing AI drafts

Some SEO writing roles now involve editing AI-generated drafts, fact-checking them and adding real expertise. Treat AI as a research or drafting assistant, never as a source of facts. We cover the ethics and workflow in using AI tools responsibly as a remote writer.

What Google's own guidance means for your writing

Google publishes guidance on what it wants from content, and clients increasingly expect writers to have read it. Two pages matter most.

Helpful, people-first content

Google's page on creating helpful, reliable, people-first content says its ranking systems aim to reward content made for people, not content made mainly to attract search visits. It names warning signs a writer should avoid:

  • Summarising what others say without adding value.
  • Writing about niche topics without real expertise, purely for traffic.
  • Chasing a target word count. Google states that word count by itself is not a ranking goal.

The same page explains E-E-A-T (experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness). Google says trust matters most and that E-E-A-T carries extra weight on "Your Money or Your Life" topics such as health and money. On AI, Google doesn't ban AI-assisted content, but it treats mass-produced text "without manual oversight or curation" as low effort, and it treats using AI mainly to manipulate rankings as spam.

For you, this means the writers who keep getting work add something: a clearer explanation, better sources, a worked example, a useful table. A rewrite of the top three results doesn't count.

The SEO Starter Guide

Google's free SEO Starter Guide is the best first reading for a new SEO writer. Points from it that directly affect writers:

  • A good title is unique to the page and describes its contents accurately.
  • Meta descriptions should be short and unique to each page. Google often builds the snippet from page content instead.
  • Heading order doesn't affect ranking, though it helps screen-reader users. There is no ideal number of headings.
  • Keyword stuffing is against Google's spam policies, and Google Search doesn't use the keywords meta tag.
  • Anchor text tells readers and Google what the linked page is about.

Clients still send briefs asking you to repeat a keyword a set number of times. Follow the brief where it's reasonable, but you can now explain, with Google's own documentation, why forcing a phrase into every paragraph hurts the page.

A step-by-step plan to become a remote SEO content writer

Example (hypothetical): this is a 12-week plan for someone who can already write good English and has about two hours a day. Adjust the timing to your situation.

  1. Weeks 1 and 2: learn the basics. Read Google's SEO Starter Guide and the helpful-content page in full. Take HubSpot Academy's free AEO Fundamentals course, which includes a certificate. As of October 2026 it runs 2 hours 20 minutes over 7 lessons and covers E-E-A-T, keyword research, structured data and writing content that AI answer engines can quote (HubSpot Academy).
  2. Week 3: pick a niche. Choose one or two subjects you know or can research well, such as fintech, personal finance, SaaS tools, health (only if you have relevant training), education or travel. Niche writers are easier to hire than generalists.
  3. Week 4: set up a home for samples. A free WordPress.com or Medium blog works. A cheap custom domain looks more professional but isn't required.
  4. Weeks 5 to 8: write three to five SEO samples. For each one, write a mini brief first (target query, intent, reader, outline), then the article. Our guide to writing samples without paid clients has more ideas.
  5. Week 9: get feedback. Ask an experienced writer or editor to review one piece. Join writer communities on LinkedIn or X and share your work openly.
  6. Week 10: build your profile. Update your CV and LinkedIn headline to "SEO content writer, [niche]". Link your samples, name the tools you've used, and keep it to what you can honestly show.
  7. Weeks 11 and 12: apply and pitch. Send focused applications to ads that accept Nigeria-based writers, and send a few direct pitches to companies in your niche.
  8. Ongoing: track results. If a sample on your own site starts showing impressions in Google Search Console, screenshot it. Early evidence like that is persuasive.

Google DocsDrafting and sharing with editorsFree

Paid suites such as Ahrefs, Semrush and Surfer SEO appear in many ads, and clients usually give you access. Don't pay for them before you have work. Learning to read a Surfer or Clearscope brief is enough at the start.

How to build SEO samples that prove the skill

A normal writing sample shows you can write. An SEO sample has to show you can write for a search. Make that visible.

For each sample, keep a short note (on the page or in your portfolio) showing:

  • The target query and the intent you identified.
  • Why you chose the structure you did (for example, "comparison query, so I led with a table").
  • The sources you used.
  • Any results, such as Search Console impressions, if the page is on your site.

Example (hypothetical): a sample titled "How to choose a project management tool for a five-person agency" might note: "Target query: best project management software for small agencies. Intent: commercial comparison. Structure: quick answer, comparison table, three short reviews, FAQ. Sources: each tool's official pricing page, checked on the date shown."

One rewrite sample also works well. Take a weak, outdated page (your own old post, or a public page used for practice and not republished) and show the before and after with your reasoning. For a wider look at presenting your work, see building a professional writing portfolio.

Where Nigerians find remote SEO writing work

The work usually comes through four channels.

  • Remote job boards and company career pages. These carry salaried or long-term contract roles. Filter for the writing category on WorkRemote's remote writing listings. Each listing shows the company, its website and where applicants may live.
  • Content and SEO agencies. Agencies serving US, UK and Australian clients hire writers in volume and send detailed briefs. This is a good training ground, though pay per piece can be modest at first.
  • Freelance marketplaces. Upwork, Fiverr and similar platforms take a fee from your earnings. Check each platform's current fee page before you price your work.
  • Direct pitching. Emailing a marketing lead at a SaaS or fintech company with a relevant sample often beats a crowded job board. Our guide to finding international content writing clients covers pitching in detail.

How to read the location line on a remote SEO writing ad

Many "remote" writing ads aren't open to Nigeria. Read the location line before writing a single word of the application.

Ad saysWhat it usually means for you
Remote, US onlyNeeds US residence or work authorisation. Skip it.
Remote, UK or EU onlyNeeds local residence or right to work. Skip it.
Remote, EMEAEurope, Middle East and Africa. Often open, but confirm Nigeria is included.
Remote, Africa or NigeriaOpen to you. Check pay currency and contract type.
Anywhere / worldwideUsually open. Check the working hours and how they pay.

Some ads are restricted by time zone rather than country, for example "within four hours of Dubai" or "overlap with US Eastern mornings". Lagos often fits those windows. For more on these labels, read what "worldwide remote" means when you apply from Nigeria and what EMEA means in a remote job ad.

How SEO content writers are paid

Pay arrangements vary more than the job titles do. These are the common structures:

  • Per word. Common with agencies and freelance clients.
  • Per article. A flat fee for a set length and brief.
  • Hourly. More common for editing, updating or optimising existing content.
  • Monthly retainer or salary. A set number of pieces or hours a month, or a salaried role.

As a benchmark, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median pay of $76,910 a year ($36.98 an hour) for writers and authors in May 2025 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook). Treat this with care for two reasons. First, the category covers all writers in the US, including authors and other specialisms, not just SEO content writers. Second, it reflects US-based pay. Remote pay offered to Nigeria-based writers is usually well below US local pay, especially at entry level. The BLS also records that 65% of people in this occupation are self-employed, which matches how much writing work runs on freelance and contract arrangements.

Example (hypothetical): if a client paid $0.05 a word for a 1,500-word article, you would earn $75, about ₦102,150 at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026). At four such articles a week, that comes to roughly $1,200 a month before platform fees, transfer costs and tax. This is arithmetic to help you price, not a market rate. Rates vary widely by niche, client and experience.

For role-level pay figures, see the remote content writer salary guide. For setting your own rates, see pricing freelance writing for global clients.

Getting paid and tax

Foreign clients typically pay through a freelance platform, Payoneer, Wise, an employer-of-record service such as Deel, or a direct transfer to a dollar account. Fees and withdrawal options differ a lot, so read our guide on how to receive dollar payments in Nigeria before you agree terms. Income from foreign clients can still be taxable in Nigeria. Our page on tax for remote workers in Nigeria explains the rules under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025.

Nigerian realities to plan for

Power and internet

Missing a deadline because NEPA took light is still a missed deadline to a client in Texas. Most working writers keep an inverter or solar setup big enough for a laptop and router, and two internet options: two ISPs, or a MiFi plus a phone hotspot. Starlink is available in Nigeria if you can afford it, but check the current price before committing.

Work in Google Docs with offline mode switched on so an outage doesn't cost you a draft.

Time zones

Writing is mostly asynchronous, but editors still expect replies and calls within their working day. As of late October 2026:

  • UK clients: the UK is on GMT after the clocks went back on 25 October 2026, so Lagos is one hour ahead. A 10am London call is 11am in Lagos.
  • US Eastern clients: New York is 5 hours behind Lagos until 1 November 2026, then 6 hours behind. A 9am New York meeting becomes 3pm in Lagos in winter.
  • US Pacific clients: 9 hours behind Lagos in winter, so their afternoons fall in your night.

Nigeria stays on WAT (UTC+1) all year with no daylight saving, so the gap shifts twice a year as other countries change their clocks.

Identity and accounts

Platforms and payment providers will ask for identity verification. Have your NIN, BVN, a valid ID and proof of address ready, and use your real name on every profile.

Test assignments and warning signs

Most serious clients ask for a short test, such as a 300 to 800-word piece, an outline from a brief or an edit of an existing page. That's normal. Unusual and worth questioning:

  • A "test" that is a complete, publishable 2,000-word article, unpaid.
  • Several unpaid "tests" for the same client.
  • Requests to pay for training, software or "onboarding" before you start.
  • Interviews held only on Telegram or WhatsApp with no company email or website.

Never pay to get a writing job. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria covers the common patterns, and how to complete a remote writing assessment explains how to handle legitimate tests well.

Where an SEO content writing career can lead

SEO writing is a useful base because it combines writing with measurable business results. Common next steps include:

  • Senior SEO writer or editor: owning a content area, editing other writers and updating old pages.
  • Content strategist: planning topics, briefs and calendars instead of writing everything. See the content strategist career path.
  • SEO specialist: moving into keyword strategy, audits and analytics.
  • Niche specialist: a writer known for fintech, SaaS or health content can often charge more than a generalist.

Frequently asked questions

Can I become an SEO content writer in Nigeria without a degree?

Yes. Many remote SEO writing ads don't require a degree and focus on writing quality and basic SEO knowledge instead. Your samples and test performance matter far more than your certificate. Some specialist niches, such as medical or legal content, may prefer relevant qualifications.

How long does it take to become a remote SEO content writer?

If you already write well, a few months of focused practice is a realistic target for building skills and samples. Landing the first paid client can take longer, depending on your niche and how many people you pitch. There's no fixed timeline, so measure progress by samples published and applications sent.

Do I need to pay for Ahrefs or Semrush to start?

No. Clients and agencies usually provide access to their paid tools or send briefs created with them. Google Search Console, Google's documentation and the search results themselves are free and enough to learn the fundamentals.

Is there a free SEO writing certificate worth getting?

HubSpot Academy's AEO Fundamentals course is free and includes a certificate as of October 2026. It's a reasonable signal of effort, but clients hire on samples, so treat certificates as a bonus rather than a requirement.

Can Nigerians get remote SEO writing jobs with foreign companies?

Yes, when the employer or client accepts Nigeria-based applicants. Many remote writing ads are limited to the US, UK or EU, so always check the location line in the live ad. Freelance platforms and direct pitching widen your options because they're less tied to one country.

Will AI replace SEO content writers?

AI has changed the work more than it has removed it. Some roles now focus on editing and fact-checking AI drafts. Google's guidance treats mass-produced AI content without human oversight as low value, so writers who add accuracy, expertise and clear structure remain useful.

Should I write in American or British English?

Write in the client's market spelling. Use American English for US clients and British English for UK clients, and ask if the brief doesn't say. Switching consistently is a small detail that editors notice.

Key takeaways

  • An SEO content writer writes for a specific search query and the person behind it. Clear writing comes first, and SEO shapes the structure.
  • Google's free SEO Starter Guide and helpful-content documentation are the best foundation, and they explain why keyword stuffing doesn't work.
  • Build three to five samples that show your SEO reasoning (query, intent, structure, sources), not just your prose.
  • Read the location line on every remote ad. Many are restricted to the US, UK or EU, while EMEA, Africa and worldwide roles are more likely to be open to you.
  • US pay benchmarks are not what Nigeria-based writers are usually offered, so price using clear arithmetic and plan for fees and tax.
  • Power backup, two internet options and awareness of time zones are part of being reliable to foreign clients.
