How to become a remote SEO specialist from Nigeria

An SEO specialist gets a website found in Google and, increasingly, cited in AI answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews. It's one of the most remote-friendly marketing jobs there is, and UK and US agencies have hired Nigerian SEOs for years because the work happens entirely in browsers, spreadsheets and documents.

You can learn the basics free. What gets you hired is a site you've grown, with a Search Console chart to prove it.

What a remote seo specialist does

SEO work splits into three parts. Technical SEO makes sure search engines can crawl and index the site (redirects, page speed, canonical tags, structured data). On-page and content SEO decides what pages should exist and makes them answer what people actually search. Off-page SEO earns links and mentions from other sites.

At an agency you'll usually cover all three for several clients. In-house, at a SaaS or e-commerce company, you might own one site and work closely with writers and developers. Since 2024 most employers also want someone who tracks how the brand appears in AI search tools.

A day in the role

  1. Checking Google Search Console for drops in clicks, indexing errors or manual actions
  2. Crawling a site with Screaming Frog and turning the results into a short list of fixes
  3. Doing keyword research in Ahrefs or Semrush and writing content briefs for freelancers
  4. Editing old articles so they answer the search properly and link to the right product pages
  5. Writing developer tickets for redirects, schema markup or page speed fixes
  6. Pitching data stories or expert quotes to journalists and bloggers for links
  7. Updating a monthly report in Looker Studio and explaining what changed

Skills you need

Core skills

Keyword research and search intent

Choosing what to target is half the job. You need to read a results page and know whether Google wants a guide, a product page or a comparison.

Technical SEO

Crawling, indexing, redirects, canonicals, sitemaps and Core Web Vitals. Agencies pay more for SEOs who can find and explain technical problems.

Content optimisation

Most SEO wins on established sites come from improving pages that already exist.

Link building and digital PR

Links still matter. Doing it without spam is a skill employers test.

Google Search Console and GA4

These are your evidence. You'll use them daily to diagnose drops and prove wins.

Basic HTML and how JavaScript sites render

You need to read source code, spot a stray noindex tag and know when content is invisible to crawlers.

Spreadsheets, plus a little regex or Python

Crawl exports and keyword lists run to thousands of rows. Filtering and grouping them quickly saves hours.

AI search visibility

Employers now ask how you'd get the brand cited in AI Overviews and chat assistants, and how you'd measure it.

Soft skills

Explaining technical issues simply

Clients and managers won't fund fixes they don't understand.

Patience with slow results

SEO changes can take weeks or months to show. You need to set expectations and keep going.

Working with developers

Many fixes need a developer's time, so clear tickets and good relationships get things shipped.

Tools you'll use

  • Google Search Console

Free. Clicks, impressions, indexing and errors straight from Google.

  • Screaming Frog SEO Spider

Crawler. The free version crawls up to 500 URLs, enough to learn on.

  • Ahrefs or Semrush

Keyword and backlink research. Paid, though both have limited free tools.

  • Google Analytics 4

Free. What visitors from search do on the site.

  • PageSpeed Insights

Free. Core Web Vitals and speed issues per page.

  • Looker Studio

Free reporting dashboards from Search Console and GA4.

  • Rich Results Test and Schema.org

Free. Check structured data is valid.

  • WordPress with Yoast or Rank Math

Most client sites you'll touch run on WordPress.

Where to learn

Career path

How remote seo specialists usually move up, with the years it tends to take, and where people move sideways.

  1. Entry

SEO assistant or junior SEO executive

    0-2

Often at an agency doing audits, outreach and reporting. Remote entry roles exist mostly at agencies and outsourcing firms.

  2. Mid-level

    SEO specialist

    2-4

Owns client sites or an in-house site. Most remote openings to Nigerians sit here.

  3. Senior

Senior SEO or technical SEO lead

    4-7

Handles migrations, big sites and strategy; may lead juniors.

  4. Lead

Head of SEO or organic growth

    7+

Owns organic channels and budget at a company or agency.

Sideways moves

  • Content marketing or freelance SEO consultant · 3+

Many experienced SEOs move into content strategy or run their own client base.

Career path for a remote seo specialist: SEO assistant or junior SEO executive (0-2), then SEO specialist (2-4), then Senior SEO or technical SEO lead (4-7), then Head of SEO or organic growth (7+). Sideways moves: Content marketing or freelance SEO consultant.

Getting hired from Nigeria

You need a site with a before and after. The cheapest way is to build one: a WordPress blog on something you know well (Nigerian tax for freelancers, JAMB revision, used cars in Lagos) and grow it for six to twelve months. The other way is to offer a local business or NGO a free audit and fixes in exchange for permission to share the Search Console chart. Write up what you did and what happened, with dates.

Remote SEO roles open to Nigerians are mostly at agencies and SaaS companies. On Himalayas, several October 2026 SEO ads accepted all countries and asked for working hours within about four hours of GMT, which suits Lagos perfectly. LinkedIn and Upwork (where audits and technical fixes sell well) are worth checking too, and many SEOs get their first agency role by being active in SEO conversations on LinkedIn and X.

Be ready for a test task, usually an audit or keyword plan. Most roles are contracts paid through Deel or straight to Payoneer or Wise. Because SEO work is mostly async, a reliable evening connection matters less than for ad-buying roles, but you still need backup power for client calls.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Learning theory for a year without touching a real site. Start a site in week one.
  • Buying links from private blog networks or "guest post" sellers to show quick results. It can get a client's site penalised and costs you references.
  • Promising rankings or traffic numbers. Nobody controls Google, and clients remember promises.
  • Reporting rankings for vanity keywords instead of clicks, sign-ups and sales from organic search.
  • Ignoring AI search. Interviewers in 2026 expect an informed view on AI Overviews and assistants, not panic or dismissal.
  • Taking $4-an-hour work for too long. It's fine for a first portfolio, but worldwide SEO roles in 2026 ads paid many times that.

Questions people ask

Can I become an SEO specialist in Nigeria without a degree?

Yes. SEO hiring is based on results and test tasks, not degrees. A blog you grew with clear Search Console data is enough to get interviews.

How much does a remote SEO specialist earn in Nigeria?

From about $4 an hour on Nigeria-only ads to $45K to $70K a year for worldwide mid-level strategist roles, based on ads we saw in October 2026. Senior leads were advertised at $50K to $85K. See the salary page for sources.

Is SEO dying because of AI?

No, but it's changing. A Pew Research study of US users found people clicked a normal search result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one. Clicks on simple questions are falling, so SEOs now focus more on pages that still get clicks and on being cited by AI tools.

How long does it take to learn SEO?

You can learn the basics in a few weeks with Google's guide and free courses from Ahrefs and Semrush. Getting good enough to be hired usually takes months of practice on a real site, because results take time to show.

Do I need to pay for Ahrefs or Semrush to learn?

No. Google Search Console, the free version of Screaming Frog and the free tools Ahrefs and Semrush offer are enough to start. Employers usually provide paid tools.

Should I specialise in technical SEO or content SEO?

Start broad, then lean towards what you enjoy. Technical SEOs who understand JavaScript sites and migrations are harder to find and usually paid more; content SEOs are in demand at publishers and SaaS companies.
