Remote Content Strategist Jobs: Skills and Career Path
What remote content strategists do, the skills employers want, US pay benchmarks and how Nigerians can move from writer to strategist and find eligible jobs.

Remote content strategist jobs are open to Nigerians, but most of them go to people who can show strategy work, not just good writing. A content strategist decides what an organisation should publish, for whom, why and how success is measured. Writers produce the pieces. Strategists plan the system those pieces fit into.
This changes how you prepare. Employers hiring content strategists remotely want to see that you can audit a website, plan from audience research and keyword data, write briefs other people can follow and report results in numbers. Many of these roles are also limited to people living in the US, UK or EU, so finding the ads you can actually apply for from Lagos, Enugu or Kano is a skill of its own.
This guide covers what the role involves, the skills employers ask for, a realistic career path from writer to head of content, what the pay looks like and how to tell which ads accept applicants based in Nigeria.
Quick answer
A remote content strategist plans and manages an organisation's content: audience research, content audits, editorial calendars, briefs, style and governance rules, and performance reporting. Nigerians can do the role remotely when the employer hires in Nigeria or offers worldwide contracts. Most people move into it after two to four years of writing, editing, SEO or social media work, backed by a portfolio that shows planning and measurable results.
What a remote content strategist actually does
A content strategist sits between business goals and published content. If a software company wants more trial sign-ups, the content strategist works out which questions potential customers search for, which existing pages are failing, what new content is needed, who will write it and how results will be tracked.
A typical week might include:
- Running a content audit: listing every page on a site, with traffic, rankings and conversions, then marking each page to keep, update, merge or delete
- Doing keyword and audience research to decide on topics
- Building and managing the editorial calendar in Notion, Asana, Trello or Airtable
- Writing content briefs (target reader, search intent, outline, sources, internal links) for freelance or in-house writers
- Keeping a style guide and governance rules (who approves what, how often pages get reviewed)
- Reporting monthly on traffic, engagement and leads using Google Analytics 4 and Google Search Console
- Meeting product, sales, design and SEO colleagues to agree priorities
Remote teams depend on written communication, so a remote content strategist spends a lot of time writing documents, Slack updates and recorded walkthroughs instead of holding meetings.
Content strategist vs content writer
The difference comes down to scope. A content writer is judged on the quality and delivery of individual pieces. A content strategist is judged on whether the whole body of content meets a business goal.
| Area | Content writer | Content strategist |
|---|---|---|
| Main output | Articles, pages, emails | Plans, audits, briefs, reports |
| Measured by | Quality, deadlines | Traffic, leads, engagement |
| Decides topics | Sometimes | Yes |
| Manages others | Rarely | Often (writers, editors) |
Many strategists still write, especially at small startups. If you are still building your writing base, the content writer career guide covers that stage.
The main types of content strategist role
Job titles vary a lot, so search for all of them:
- Marketing or SEO content strategist: organic traffic, blog and resource hubs, lead generation. This is the most common type of remote ad and is often titled "content marketing strategist" or "SEO content strategist".
- UX or product content strategist (often called content designer): words inside apps and websites, information architecture, help centres. This type is closer to UX writing as a remote career.
- Brand and social content strategist: campaigns, social channels, video and creator content.
- Agency content strategist: handles strategy for several client accounts at once and is often measured on client retention as well as results.
Skills employers ask for in remote content strategist jobs
Content strategist ads usually ask for the same core skills, and a few of them are things writers rarely practise. In rough order of how often they come up:
Research and planning skills
- Audience research: interviews, surveys, sales call notes, support tickets, Reddit and community threads
- Keyword research and search intent: tools such as Semrush, Ahrefs or Google Search Console, and knowing when a topic needs a guide, a comparison page or a product page
- Content audits and inventories: spreadsheet work, often exported from a crawler such as Screaming Frog
- Topic clusters and information architecture: grouping content so readers and search engines can follow it
Editorial and governance skills
- Writing clear briefs that a freelancer in another country can follow without a call
- Editing for accuracy, tone and structure, not only grammar
- Building and enforcing a style guide
- Setting review cycles so old pages get updated
Google's own guidance matters here. Its Search Central page on creating helpful, people-first content tells site owners to make content mainly to help people, to show who created it and how, and to avoid content made mainly to attract search visits. Content strategists are expected to turn that guidance into editorial rules, so read it closely.
Measurement skills
Strategy without measurement is just opinion. Expect to be asked about:
- Google Analytics 4 (GA4): traffic, engagement, conversions and attribution
- Google Search Console: impressions, clicks, queries and indexing problems
- Building simple dashboards in Looker Studio or Google Sheets
- Choosing KPIs (key performance indicators) that match the goal, such as sign-ups rather than page views for a lead-generation blog
Tools you will see in job ads
| Category | Common tools |
|---|---|
| CMS | WordPress, Webflow, Contentful, HubSpot CMS |
| SEO | Semrush, Ahrefs, Search Console |
| Analytics | GA4, Looker Studio |
| Planning | Notion, Asana, Airtable, Trello |
| Collaboration | Slack, Google Docs, Loom |
You don't need all of them. Being strong in one CMS, one SEO tool and GA4 is enough to talk confidently in most interviews.
AI judgement
Content teams now use AI tools for research summaries, outlines and first drafts. A strategist is expected to set the rules: where AI is allowed, how output gets fact-checked and how the team avoids thin, repetitive pages. Treat this as an editorial policy question, not a prompt-writing trick.
Career path: from writer to head of content
Most content strategists did not start with that title. A Coursera article on content strategist salaries (updated March 2026) names web writer, content editor and digital content manager as common feeder roles, with progression from content strategist to communications manager and then to content director or director of communications.
Here is a realistic path for a Nigeria-based professional. Timeframes depend on the person and the employer, so read them as rough guides.
| Stage | Typical titles | What proves you're ready to move up |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Foundation | Content writer, SEO writer, editor, social media assistant | Published work, steady clients |
| 2. Transition | Content specialist, SEO content lead, managing editor | You plan topics and write briefs |
| 3. Strategist | Content strategist, content marketing strategist, content designer | Audits and reports with results |
| 4. Senior | Senior or lead content strategist | You manage writers and budgets |
| 5. Leadership | Content marketing manager, head of content, content director | You own targets for a team |
Moving from stage 1 to stage 2
You don't need a new job to make this move. Start doing strategy tasks where you already work:
- Ask your current client or employer for access to Google Search Console and GA4.
- Suggest three topics a month backed by keyword data, instead of waiting to be assigned topics.
- Offer to write briefs for other writers.
- Track what happens to the pages you suggested and keep screenshots.
If you are still at stage 1, becoming a remote SEO content writer is the most direct route into strategy, because SEO work already involves research and measurement.
Moving into leadership
The step after senior strategist usually means owning a budget, hiring freelancers and reporting to a marketing head. That role is covered in the content marketing manager career guide. Some strategists take a different route into product content design or SEO leadership. Our guide on SEO specialist vs digital marketing manager careers compares those options.
How much remote content strategists earn
US figures are the most widely published benchmark, but they are not what a Nigeria-based contractor should expect. Treat them as a ceiling for comparison.
The Coursera article mentioned above (sources checked in March 2026) gives these US figures:
| Source and measure | Annual figure |
|---|---|
| Glassdoor median total pay | $109,000 |
| Zippia | $93,672 |
| ZipRecruiter | $93,586 |
| Indeed | $80,233 |
| Payscale | $75,174 |
Glassdoor's self-reported median total pay, quoted in the same article, rises with experience: about $79,000 for entry level (under a year), $89,000 for one to three years, $98,000 for four to six years, $104,000 for seven to nine years and $129,000 for 15 years or more. These are US employee figures that include bonuses and similar extras.
What this means for a Nigeria-based applicant
Companies that hire internationally often set pay by location bands, and Nigeria usually sits in a lower band than the US or UK. Some companies pay one global rate for a role, but they are a minority, so check the ad or ask early. Freelance strategists are usually paid per project or by a monthly retainer, and pay depends on the client's market and your track record. We have not found a reliable published survey of content strategist pay for Nigeria-based contractors, so we won't quote one.
Example (hypothetical): a UK startup offers you a contractor retainer of $2,500 a month. At the CBN NFEM weighted average of ₦1,362 to $1 (23 October 2026), that is about ₦3,405,000 a month before transfer fees, any exchange spread charged by your payment app and tax. The calculation is only an illustration, not a typical offer.
For a broader comparison of marketing pay, see the content marketing manager salary guide.
Can Nigerians get remote content strategist jobs?
Yes, when the employer hires in Nigeria, accepts applicants across EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) or offers worldwide contractor agreements. Many content strategist ads are restricted to one country, so check the location line on every ad before you spend an hour on an application.
How to read the location line
| What the ad says | Can you apply from Nigeria? |
|---|---|
| Remote (US) or Remote, USA | Usually no, it needs US work authorisation |
| Remote, UK or EU | Usually no, unless it says otherwise |
| Remote, EMEA | Often yes, but check the time zone range |
| Remote, worldwide or anywhere | Usually yes, read the details |
| Remote, Africa or Nigeria | Yes |
| Contractor, any location | Usually yes |
Watch for a time-zone condition. Some EMEA ads say something like "UTC-1 to UTC+3", which includes Nigeria (UTC+1). Others say "Europe-based", which usually excludes you even when "EMEA" appears in the title. Our planned guide on what "worldwide remote" means for Nigerian applicants explains these labels in more detail.
As of October 2026, we tried to verify several content strategist ads marked worldwide, Africa or EMEA. Every one we opened had already closed or been removed. That is normal for this role: good ads get filled quickly. Set up searches and job alerts so you see new ads early, then confirm eligibility on the employer's own careers page.
Employee or contractor?
Most foreign companies hire Nigeria-based content strategists as independent contractors, either directly or through a platform such as Deel or Remote. Fewer use an employer of record (EOR), which makes you a formal employee with benefits. The difference affects leave, notice and tax. Read contractor vs employee for Nigerians hired abroad before you accept an offer.
Working hours, setup and getting paid from Nigeria
Time zones
Nigeria's position works in your favour for European and UK roles. Lagos is on WAT (UTC+1) all year. From 25 October 2026 the UK is on GMT, so a 9am to 5pm London day runs from 10am to 6pm in Lagos. Central European teams share Lagos time in winter.
US teams are harder. US Eastern time is 6 hours behind Lagos from 1 November 2026 (5 hours in summer), so a 10am New York meeting is at 4pm in Lagos. With US Pacific (8 or 9 hours behind), meetings often land late in the evening. Since a strategist's work is mostly planning and writing documents, many US companies only ask for two to four overlapping hours a day. Agree on this before you sign.
Power and internet
A content strategist joins stakeholder meetings, presents reports and sometimes runs workshops, so a dropped call during a quarterly review looks bad. Plan for:
- Backup power: an inverter with batteries or solar, with a generator as the last resort
- Two internet connections, for example a fixed or Starlink connection plus a MiFi or phone hotspot on a different network
- A quiet corner and a decent headset for client calls
Payment and tax
Contractor pay usually arrives in dollars through Deel, Remote, Payoneer, Wise or a Nigerian dollar account app. Fees and withdrawal options differ a lot between them, so compare them in our guide to receiving dollar payments in Nigeria. Foreign income still has tax implications at home, which are explained in tax for remote workers in Nigeria.
How to build a content strategy portfolio
A writing portfolio shows that you write well. A strategy portfolio shows that you can think, plan and measure. Hiring managers for remote content strategist jobs want the second kind. Aim for two or three case studies, each following this structure:
- Context: the organisation, its audience and its goal
- Problem: what was wrong with the content or what was missing
- Research: what you looked at (audit, keyword data, interviews)
- Plan: your recommendations, calendar or content model
- Execution: what got published or changed, and who did what
- Results: numbers, honestly reported, including what didn't work
If you have no strategy clients yet
You can still produce real evidence:
- Audit a real website (a Nigerian NGO, a church, a small business or an open-source project) using public data and free tools. Present it as an unsolicited audit, not as client work.
- Run your own small site or newsletter for six months with a documented plan and real analytics.
- Volunteer to plan content for a community or nonprofit, with permission to share the results.
Be honest in how you label each piece. Calling an unsolicited audit "client work" is the kind of claim that ends interviews. For general portfolio structure, see the planned guide on building a professional writing portfolio.
Example (hypothetical): Amaka has written blog posts for three SaaS clients for two years. She asks one client for Search Console access, finds 40 posts with falling traffic, groups them into 12 updates and 10 merges, writes briefs and tracks results for three months. That project, written up as a case study with the client's permission, is stronger evidence than ten more sample articles.
Training and certificates that help
Hiring managers care more about portfolios than certificates, but structured courses fill gaps quickly and give you vocabulary for interviews. All of these are low-cost or free as of October 2026. Confirm on the provider's page before you enrol.
| Course | Provider | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Content Marketing Principles for Business | Semrush Academy | Free, about 72 minutes, certificate offered |
| Content Marketing Certification course | HubSpot Academy | HubSpot advertises free Academy courses; check this one before enrolling |
| Google Analytics training and certification | Google (via Skillshop) | Check Skillshop for current details |
The Semrush course covers content formats, an SEO-first creation process, a ten-step content plan with topic clusters and measuring performance, which matches the core of the strategist role. Google's help centre says Google Analytics offers four training courses and a certification through Skillshop. GA4 skills come up in almost every strategist interview.
Applying and interviewing for content strategist roles
Search with several titles
Search "content strategist", "content marketing strategist", "content lead", "content designer", "managing editor" and "SEO content manager". On WorkRemote, remote writing jobs open to Nigeria and business and marketing listings are the two categories to check.
Expect a strategy task
Many content strategist interviews include a take-home exercise, for example "audit three pages of our blog and propose a 90-day plan." Good answers are short, prioritised and tied to the company's goal. Before you start, ask how long the task should take. If a company wants several days of unpaid work that looks like a real project, treat that as a warning sign.
Watch for scams
Fake "content strategist" offers on Telegram and WhatsApp sometimes ask for training fees or equipment payments. A real employer never asks you to pay to get a job. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria lists the common patterns.
Common mistakes when moving into content strategy
- Applying with a writing portfolio only. Add at least one audit or plan with numbers.
- Ignoring location limits. Applying to US-only ads wastes time and can get your email marked as spam by applicant tracking systems.
- Reporting vanity metrics. Page views alone don't show impact. Connect your work to sign-ups, leads or retention.
- Overclaiming results. If traffic rose during a Google update or a big product launch, say so.
- Treating US salary data as your offer. Use it as a ceiling and research the actual pay band.
- Skipping the time-zone conversation. Agree on overlap hours before you sign, especially with US teams.
Frequently asked questions
Can I become a content strategist without a degree in Nigeria?
Yes. Content strategy has no licensing requirement, and many remote employers focus on portfolios and results rather than degrees. A degree in English, mass communication or marketing helps, but a strong case study with real numbers counts for more in most hiring processes.
How long does it take to move from content writer to content strategist?
There is no fixed timeline, but many people make the move after two to four years of writing, editing or SEO work. You will move faster if you start doing strategy tasks (topic research, briefs, audits and reporting) in your current role instead of waiting for the title.
Is content strategy the same as content marketing?
Not quite. Content marketing uses content to attract and convert customers. Content strategy is the wider planning discipline behind it, and it also covers product content, help centres and governance. In job ads the two terms often overlap, so read the duties, not just the title.
Do remote content strategists need to know SEO?
For most marketing-focused roles, yes. You need to understand keyword research, search intent, internal linking and Search Console data. UX and product content strategy roles need less SEO and more information architecture and user research.
How much does a remote content strategist earn in dollars?
US benchmarks range from about $75,000 to $109,000 a year depending on the source (US figures via Coursera, March 2026). Nigeria-based contractors are usually offered less than US local pay, and offers depend on the company's pay bands, your experience and the client's market.
Can I work as a freelance content strategist for international clients?
Yes. Many strategists in Nigeria start with freelance audits, content plans or monthly retainers before taking a full-time role. Freelancing gives you case studies quickly, though income is less predictable. The planned guide on finding international content writing clients covers client outreach.
What should a content strategist CV include?
It should show outcomes: audits completed, content programmes planned, traffic or lead changes, teams or freelancers managed, and tools used. Put one line of measurable result under each role, and link two or three case studies rather than a long list of articles.
Key takeaways
- A content strategist plans, governs and measures content. Writers produce it. Remote employers hire strategists for that planning and measurement.
- Most people move into strategy after two to four years of writing, editing, SEO or social media work, by taking on audits, briefs and reporting first.
- Core skills are audience and keyword research, content audits, editorial planning, style governance and GA4 and Search Console reporting.
- US salary benchmarks run from about $75,000 to $109,000 a year, but Nigeria-based contractors are usually paid less, so research each company's pay band.
- Many ads are limited to one country. Look for Africa, EMEA, worldwide or contractor-friendly roles and confirm eligibility on the employer's own page.
- A strategy portfolio with honest numbers carries more weight than certificates.
Next steps
Pick one website you can access (a client's, an employer's or your own) and complete a content audit this month. That single case study will do more for your applications than another batch of sample articles. Then search the remote job listings on WorkRemote for "content strategist" and related titles, and use "Get email updates" to save the search so new matching jobs reach your inbox each day.
