How to become a remote UX writer from Nigeria
Open your bank app and try a transfer that fails. If the message says "Error 1027. Transaction declined", nobody did the UX writing. If it says "This transfer didn't go through because you've reached today's ₦1,000,000 limit. Try a smaller amount or wait until tomorrow", somebody did.
That's the job: short, precise words that help people finish a task, written alongside designers in Figma. It pays well where it exists, and it's done remotely all over the world. In Nigeria, though, you'll find far more ads for UI/UX designers than for UX writers, so expect to build your way in rather than apply straight into the title.

What a remote ux writer does
UX writers decide what a product says and how it says it. That covers microcopy (buttons, labels, empty states, error messages), flows (sign-up, KYC, checkout), notifications and emails triggered by the product, and the voice and tone guide that keeps a hundred screens sounding like one company.
The writing is the visible part. Underneath is research and structure: testing whether users understand a term, agreeing what "pending" means across the app, keeping a glossary, and making sure strings work for screen readers and in other languages.
A day in the role
- Join a design review in Figma and rewrite the copy for a new onboarding flow
- Write five versions of an error message and pick one with the designer and engineer
- Run a quick comprehension test with users on a confusing term like "settlement" or "wallet"
- Update the content style guide with a new rule, such as how to write amounts and dates
- Write push notifications and in-app messages for a feature launch
- Check strings for length so they fit on small Android screens and survive translation
- Review copy written by engineers and PMs before it ships
Skills you need
Core skills
- Concise, plain writing
Every word on a small screen competes for space and attention. The skill is cutting "Please be informed that your transaction is being processed" to "Processing payment".
- Understanding user flows
Copy only makes sense in context. You need to see the whole journey, not just the one screen in front of you.
- Figma
Most product teams design in Figma, and content designers edit text directly in files, leave comments and use components.
- Voice and tone
A fintech app should sound calm when money goes missing and friendly at sign-up. Writing a tone guide is a common portfolio piece.
- Content testing
Highlighter tests, comprehension tests and A/B tests let you prove your words work instead of arguing about taste.
- Accessibility
Screen readers read your button labels aloud. "Click here" fails; plain language and clear link text pass.
- Localisation awareness
Strings with variables, plurals and dates break easily in translation. Products serving Francophone Africa or Europe care about this.
Soft skills
- Defending choices with evidence
Everyone on the team has opinions about words. Data and user quotes win the argument.
- Collaboration
You'll work daily with designers, engineers, PMs, legal and support teams.
- Curiosity about users
Reading support tickets and app reviews is where most copy problems show up first.
Tools you'll use
Figma

Getting hired from Nigeria
A portfolio of three or four case studies is non-negotiable. Each should show a real screen, your rewrite and why:
- Rewrite a Nigerian app flow you use. A failed transfer, a KYC upload, a loan rejection. Screenshot the original, mock your version in Figma, and explain the reasoning in five or six lines.
- A voice and tone guide for a real or invented product, with examples for success, error and empty states.
- A small test. Ask ten people what a term means, change it, ask ten more. Small numbers are fine; showing the habit matters.
- Something longer, such as an onboarding sequence or a help article, to show range.
Where Nigerians actually get in:
- Inside your current company. If you're a copywriter or support writer at a fintech or startup, offer to fix product copy. That becomes your first case study and often your first title change.
- Nigerian product companies. Lagos fintechs advertise plenty of product design and UX research roles (Moniepoint, for example, had both on MyJobMag in October 2026). Dedicated writing roles are rarer; watch the content designer title.
- Remote roles abroad. Search LinkedIn for "content designer" and "UX writer" with "remote", and read the location line: many are limited to the US, UK or EU, but some hire across time zones.
UK and European teams overlap almost fully with Lagos hours. Keep a reliable connection for design reviews in Figma, and expect foreign contracts to pay through Deel, Remote.com or a domiciliary account.
Pitfalls to avoid
- A portfolio of marketing copy and blog posts. UX hiring managers want screens, flows and reasoning.
- Rewriting screens for style without explaining the user problem you solved
- Spending $1,200 on a course before trying the free material and building one case study
- Using big-brand redesigns (Netflix, Spotify) as your only samples when Nigerian apps give you real problems to fix
- Writing clever copy where clear copy is needed, especially in payments and errors
- Ignoring how your strings will look on a small, cheap Android phone
Questions people ask
Can I become a UX writer in Nigeria without a degree?
Yes. Hiring managers look at your portfolio and writing test, not your certificate. Degrees in English, mass communication or similar help with general writing skill, but they aren't required.
How much does a UX writer earn?
In the US, Payscale's self-reported average is $89,671 a year (66 profiles, updated May 2025). There's no reliable published figure for Nigeria-based UX writers yet, so we don't guess; local design roles on Nigerian job boards often advertise far less.
What's the difference between a UX writer and a copywriter?
Copywriters write to persuade, mostly in marketing. UX writers write to help people use a product, inside the product itself, and work closely with designers and engineers.
Do UX writers need to know Figma?
Yes, at a basic level. You should be able to open files, edit text, use comments and understand components. You don't need to design screens from scratch.
Are there UX writing jobs in Nigeria?
A few, mostly at larger fintech and product companies, and often titled content designer. Many Nigerian UX writers work for foreign companies remotely, or moved into the role from inside their own company.
Is UX writing being replaced by AI?
AI tools draft copy quickly, and teams use them. The work that remains is deciding what a product should say, testing it with users and keeping it consistent, which still needs a person.

- Copywriter
A copywriter writes words that get people to act: ads, landing pages, product descriptions, emails, scripts and website copy. It's one of the easier creative jobs to do remotely from Nigeria because the work is all text, but clients judge you on samples and a writing test, not on your English grades.
- Technical Writer
A technical writer explains how products work: API references, developer guides, help-centre articles, user manuals and internal process docs. It's one of the better-paid writing jobs you can do remotely from Nigeria, especially in software, and a public portfolio of real documentation counts for more than a degree.
- Content Writer
A content writer researches and writes articles, blog posts, guides, newsletters and web pages that help a business get found and trusted. Nigerians do this remotely for clients all over the world, but the low end of the market is crowded and poorly paid, so the writers who earn well pick a subject and learn SEO.
- UI/UX Designer
A UI/UX designer plans how a website or app works (the user experience) and designs how it looks and responds on screen (the user interface), usually in Figma, from wireframes to polished, buildable screens. It is one of the most common remote design jobs for Nigerians, especially through agencies and freelance clients, but the entry level is crowded and clients pay for craft, clear process and reliability.
