You can build a successful remote sales career from Nigeria. The usual route is to start in prospecting (appointment setter or sales development representative), prove you can create pipeline, move into closing deals as an account executive, and then choose between bigger deals, account growth, partnerships or management. What decides how far you go is less your location than the record you build: numbers you can show, a market you understand and the skill to run a full sales cycle over video and email.
This guide lays out that ladder stage by stage. It covers what each stage pays, using US benchmarks and real ads that name Nigeria, and what gets people promoted out of each stage. It also covers the Nigerian realities that can slow you down, such as calling US buyers in the evening, keeping a quiet line during an outage, and "worldwide" roles that still expect you to travel. At the end there is a hypothetical five-year plan you can adapt.
Quick answer
A remote sales career usually runs from appointment setter or SDR, to account executive, to senior, enterprise, account management, partnerships or sales management roles. Nigerians can get these roles when an ad names Nigeria, Africa, EMEA or genuinely worldwide eligibility. Entry contractor pay for Africa-based SDRs is often in the low thousands of dollars a month. Pay rises mainly through commission and closing larger deals.
Sales and business development: what the words mean in remote job ads
Job titles in sales are used loosely, so it helps to pin them down before you plan anything.
- Appointment setter: books calls for someone else, often for coaches, agencies or service businesses. Usually paid per appointment, by the hour, or a small base plus commission. See the appointment setter career guide.
- Sales development representative (SDR) or business development representative (BDR): finds and qualifies potential buyers by email, LinkedIn and phone, then hands qualified meetings to a closer. Some companies use BDR for outbound work and SDR for inbound. Others use the two words for the same job.
- Account executive (AE): owns the deal from first proper meeting to signed contract, and carries a quota (a revenue target).
- Account manager or customer success manager: keeps and grows existing customers through renewals and upsells.
- Business development manager (BDM): a broad title. At some companies it means a senior seller. At others it means building new channels, markets or partnerships rather than closing individual deals.
- Partnerships or alliances manager: builds revenue through other companies, such as resellers, agencies and technology partners.
In plain terms, sales means turning demand into signed revenue. Business development means creating new routes to demand. Early in your career the two overlap heavily. They separate later, and that split is one of the bigger choices you'll make.
The remote sales career ladder, stage by stage
The table below summarises a common progression at B2B (business-to-business) companies. The time ranges are our general guidance, not survey data. Strong performers move faster and weak markets slow everyone down.
| Stage | What you own | Rough time in stage | What gets you promoted |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Setter or SDR | Meetings booked, pipeline created | 12 to 24 months | Hitting meeting targets consistently |
| 2. Account executive | Closed revenue against quota | 2 to 4 years | Hitting quota over several quarters |
| 3. Senior or enterprise AE, account manager | Bigger or longer deals, renewals | Open-ended | Large wins, forecast accuracy |
| 4. Manager, partnerships, BD lead | Team results or new revenue channels | Open-ended | Building something repeatable |
Stage 1: appointment setter or SDR
This is where most Nigerians enter remote sales, and it is also the stage with the most competition and the most bad offers. The job is volume and judgement together: research accounts, write short personal outreach, make calls, follow up, qualify, log everything in the CRM (customer relationship management software) and book meetings.
A real ad shows what employers ask for. An SDR contract role at Scale Army Careers, listed on Remote Rocketship as of October 2026, names Nigeria among its eligible countries. It quotes $1,300 to $1,600 a month and runs 9am to 5pm US Eastern time. It asks for 2+ years of SDR, BDR or outbound experience, experience with Go High Level (GHL) CRM, experience using AI tools, an English-language CV and a recorded video (Remote Rocketship listing). At ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), that range is roughly ₦1.77 million to ₦2.18 million a month before fees and tax.
Not every entry role asks for two years. Canonical's Graduate Sales Development Representative role is home-based worldwide and entry-level, and as of October 2026 its application form was live. It selects heavily on academic results and essays about technical projects (Canonical Greenhouse ad). If you have no experience, our separate guide to entry-level remote sales jobs covers the realistic ways in.
How to leave Stage 1: keep monthly figures you can quote. These include meetings booked against target, the share of those meetings that became real opportunities, and pipeline value created. "I booked 14 qualified meetings a month against a target of 10 for three quarters" is what gets an AE interview. "I'm hardworking" isn't.
Stage 2: account executive
The jump from SDR to AE is the most important promotion in a sales career, because it changes what you're judged on. You stop being measured on activity and start being measured on revenue. You'll run discovery calls, demos, proposals, negotiation and closing, usually over Zoom or Google Meet, with buyers you may never meet in person.
Remote AE roles that are truly open to Nigeria exist, but there are fewer of them than SDR roles. Many companies keep closing roles in the buyer's country or time zone. The most common route is internal promotion: you join as an SDR at a company that hires internationally and earn the AE seat there. Our guide on moving from sales development to account executive covers that step in detail, and the account executive career guide covers the skills and tools.
Stage 3: senior AE, enterprise AE or account management
After a few years of hitting quota, three directions open up:
- Bigger deals (senior or enterprise AE). Fewer, larger contracts with longer cycles, more people involved on the buyer's side, and procurement and security reviews. Enterprise roles often expect many years of experience and sometimes local presence. Our guide on becoming a remote enterprise account executive covers this lane.
- Growing existing customers (account management or customer success). Better suited to people who prefer relationships over hunting. Compensation usually leans more towards base salary. See the customer success manager career guide.
- Specialist sales. Solutions engineering and technical sales, for people who enjoy the product side.
Stage 4: management, partnerships or business development leadership
At this level you're either multiplying other people's results (sales manager, head of sales) or building revenue routes that don't depend on one seller (partnerships, channel and market expansion). In the US, sales managers usually come from sales rep roles and related jobs, and employers usually prefer several years of sales experience (BLS, Sales Managers). The business development manager career guide and our planned guide to remote partnership manager jobs cover the BD side.
How pay changes as your remote sales career grows
Sales pay is built differently from most remote jobs, and understanding the structure is how you judge offers at every stage.
Base, commission and on-target earnings
Most sales jobs pay a base salary plus commission or bonuses. Commission is usually a percentage of sales, and bonuses can depend on individual, team or company results (BLS, Wholesale and Manufacturing Sales Representatives). Ads often quote OTE (on-target earnings), which is base plus the commission you'd earn if you hit exactly 100% of quota. OTE is a target, not a promise. Always ask what share of the team actually hit quota last year.
Commission-only roles are common in offers made to Nigerians, especially for appointment setting. Some are fair, and many simply move all the risk onto you. Our guide to commission-only sales jobs explains how to judge one.
US benchmarks, and why they're not your offer
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) gives the clearest official benchmarks. As of its May 2025 data:
| US occupation (BLS, May 2025) | Median annual pay |
|---|---|
| Sales reps, technical and scientific products | $104,920 |
| Sales reps, non-technical products | $72,080 |
| Sales managers | $148,270 |
Sources: BLS sales representatives and BLS sales managers. These are medians for people working in the US. A Nigeria-based contractor will usually be offered well below them. Some companies, such as Canonical, say they set base pay by location, experience and skills, with a stated aim of global pay equity (Canonical Greenhouse ad). The useful point in the BLS figures is the ratios. Selling technical products pays more than selling non-technical ones, and management pays more again. That pattern tends to hold in remote pay too.
For role-level figures in dollars and naira, see the salary guides for sales development representatives, account executives and business development managers.
What actually raises your pay
In order of impact, based on how sales pay is usually built:
- Closing instead of setting. Moving from SDR to AE is usually the biggest single jump, because your commission is tied to revenue rather than meetings.
- Deal size. Selling a $50,000-a-year contract earns more commission per deal than selling a $50-a-month subscription. BLS notes that promotion for reps often means a larger account or territory, which usually offers greater commissions.
- The market you sell into. US and Western European buyers usually mean bigger budgets.
- Languages. Remote Rocketship's October 2026 listings include several "worldwide" SDR roles that require German, Italian or Danish. One German-speaking role quotes €5,000 to €10,000 a month (Remote Rocketship SDR listings for Nigeria). If you speak French, francophone markets are worth a look.
Choosing your lane: market, deal size and industry
Two Nigerian SDRs with the same talent can end up five years later in very different places because of the lane they chose. Choose deliberately.
Which market you sell to
Your buyers' location sets your working hours. Using WorkRemote's time-zone facts:
| Selling into | Their 9am to 5pm in Lagos time |
|---|---|
| UK | 10am to 6pm in winter, 9am to 5pm in summer |
| Central Europe | 9am to 5pm in winter, 8am to 4pm in summer |
| US East | 3pm to 11pm in winter, 2pm to 10pm in summer |
| US West | 6pm to 2am in winter, 5pm to 1am in summer |
US East winter time starts on 1 November 2026. UK and European hours are kinder to your health and household. US hours often bring bigger deal sizes. Many Nigerians start on US East hours and later move to UK or EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) roles. Our guide to what EMEA means in a job ad explains why those roles are often the most realistic for Nigerians.
Deal size
- SMB (small and medium-sized businesses): short cycles and many deals. A good place to learn fast.
- Mid-market: a balance of volume and value.
- Enterprise: long cycles and high stakes, and often expects experience and sometimes travel or local presence.
Industry
SaaS (software as a service) dominates remote sales hiring, and fintech, payments, recruitment services, marketing agencies and education companies hire too. Pick an industry where your background gives you credibility. A former banker selling to finance teams or a former teacher selling edtech has an edge in discovery calls that a generalist doesn't. If you want to stay close to home, the fintech route is covered in our guide to remote sales jobs in fintech.
Skills that compound over a sales career
Some skills matter at every stage and grow in value the longer you practise them.
- Written outreach. Remote buyers read before they talk. Short, specific emails and LinkedIn messages that reference something real about the prospect beat templates.
- Discovery. Asking questions that uncover the buyer's problem, budget, timeline and who decides. This is the skill that separates AEs who close from AEs who demo endlessly.
- CRM discipline. Salesforce, HubSpot and smaller tools like GHL. Managers promote people whose pipeline they can trust. Our guide to CRM skills for remote sales professionals goes further.
- Forecasting. Saying in week one of a quarter what you'll close, and being right. This is a key skill for senior AE and manager roles.
- Working with AI tools. The Scale Army ad above explicitly asks for experience with AI tools. Use them for research and first drafts, not as a substitute for knowing your prospect.
- Commercial numeracy. Understanding pricing, discounts, annual compared with monthly contracts, and how your commission is calculated.
For a free structured start, HubSpot Academy's Inbound Sales course is free, takes about three hours across seven lessons, and ends in a certification exam (HubSpot Academy, Inbound Sales). A certificate won't get you hired on its own, but it gives a beginner shared vocabulary with hiring managers.
Building a track record that travels with you
In sales, your record is your portfolio. Employers abroad can't easily check a Nigerian reference or judge an employer they haven't heard of, so make your results easy to verify and hard to ignore.
- Keep a private "numbers log" from day one. Each month, note your targets, actual results, average deal size and win rate. You won't remember them two years later.
- Get screenshots where allowed. Leaderboards and quota-attainment dashboards are fine, with client names hidden. Never share confidential customer data.
- Collect written references while you're still there. A LinkedIn recommendation from a US or UK manager carries real weight.
- Record a sample pitch or cold-call role-play. Many applications now ask for video, like the Scale Army ad above. Our guide to building a remote sales portfolio shows how to package this.
- Write CV bullets as results. "Closed $410,000 in new annual revenue at 112% of quota" beats a list of duties.
Example (hypothetical): Adaeze is an SDR selling HR software to UK companies. Her CV line reads: "Booked 162 qualified meetings in 12 months (target 120); 31 became opportunities worth $640,000 in pipeline; 9 closed." An AE hiring manager can see from that one line that she understands the funnel past her own job.
Nigeria-specific realities that shape your career
Contractor, not employee, is the norm early on
Most remote sales roles offered to Nigeria-based people are contractor arrangements, sometimes through an employer of record. This affects leave, notice periods and who handles tax. Read contractor or employee (EOR) from Nigeria before signing, and tax for remote workers in Nigeria once commission starts arriving.
Calls need a quiet line and backup power
A dropped demo with a US prospect costs more than a dropped internal meeting. Keep an inverter or solar backup sized for your laptop and router, and two internet connections (for example a MiFi plus a phone hotspot on a different network). Use a wired headset with noise cancellation. Generators and street noise carry on calls, so plan where you'll sit.
US-hours selling affects the rest of your life
Calling US East buyers in winter means working until 11pm Lagos time. That's sustainable for a while but hard for years, especially with family. Factor it into which roles you chase as you get more senior.
"Worldwide" can still mean travel and visas
Canonical's worldwide graduate SDR role requires attendance at internal company events 4 to 6 times a year, each lasting 1 to 2 weeks, often in places that require international travel, visas or vaccinations (Canonical Greenhouse ad). With a Nigerian passport, visa lead times can be long. Ask early how the company supports visa applications.
Getting paid
Commission payments can be irregular and sometimes come through a different channel from your base pay. How to receive dollar payments in Nigeria compares the apps and their fees.
Mistakes that stall remote sales careers
- Staying a setter too long. Appointment setting for one coach after another rarely leads to AE roles. After a year, aim for an SDR role at a company with a closing team you can move into.
- Job-hopping before a full cycle. If you leave every four months, you never have a full year of numbers to show.
- Treating OTE as salary. Budget on your base, not your target earnings. Our guide on evaluating a remote sales job offer covers the questions to ask.
- Ignoring stale or fake ads. Remote Rocketship flags some long-open postings as "likely ghost" listings, so check how long an ad has been up. Any "sales job" that asks you to pay for leads, training or a starter kit is a red flag. See how to spot remote job scams in Nigeria.
- Only learning to talk, not to think commercially. People who reach Stage 4 understand pricing, margins and their buyer's business. Charm alone stops working at enterprise level.
A five-year remote sales plan you can adapt
Example (hypothetical): This is an illustrative plan, not a promise of timing or pay.
- Months 0 to 6: Complete a free sales course, practise cold calls with friends, and land a setter or junior SDR role (part-time if needed). Start your numbers log.
- Months 6 to 18: Move to an SDR role at a company that hires internationally and has AEs you can learn from. Hit target three quarters in a row.
- Months 18 to 24: Ask your manager directly what an internal AE promotion requires. Shadow demos and run some smaller deals.
- Years 2 to 4: Work as an AE. Pick one market (for example UK mid-market SaaS) and get known for it. Keep quota attainment above 100% for most quarters.
- Years 4 to 5: Choose your lane: senior or enterprise AE, account management, partnerships or a team lead role. Choose based on what you've enjoyed and where your numbers are strongest.
Frequently asked questions
Is remote sales a good career for Nigerians?
Yes, for people who can handle targets and rejection. Sales is one of the few remote careers where pay is tied directly to measurable results, so strong performers can rise without a specific degree. The trade-offs are variable income and, for US markets, late working hours.
How long does it take to go from SDR to account executive?
Often 12 to 24 months, though this is general guidance rather than survey data. The fastest route is usually internal promotion after several quarters of hitting your meeting target at a company that also employs AEs.
Do I need a degree for a remote sales career?
Usually not for non-technical sales. BLS notes that a high school diploma is generally enough for non-technical sales reps in the US, while technical and scientific products often need a bachelor's degree. Some graduate programmes, such as Canonical's, select heavily on academic results, so requirements vary by employer.
Can Nigerians get remote account executive jobs with foreign companies?
Yes, but fewer than SDR roles, because many companies keep closers near their buyers. Look for ads naming Nigeria, Africa, EMEA or genuine worldwide eligibility. Being promoted internally from an SDR role is often easier than being hired straight into an AE role.
What is the difference between sales and business development?
Sales turns existing demand into signed revenue. Business development creates new routes to demand, such as partnerships, new markets or channels. Early-career titles like BDR are really sales roles. The difference becomes real at senior level.
How much do remote SDRs from Nigeria earn?
It depends on the employer and market. One October 2026 contract SDR ad naming Nigeria quoted $1,300 to $1,600 a month for US Eastern hours, about ₦1.77 million to ₦2.18 million at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN, 23 October 2026). Language-specific roles can pay much more.
Should I accept a commission-only remote sales role?
Only with care. Commission-only work can teach you the basics, but it moves all the risk onto you. Check the product, the lead source, the commission rate and whether anyone on the team actually earns well before you commit.
What should I specialise in for the highest pay later?
Generally, technical products, larger deal sizes and wealthier markets pay more. BLS medians show reps selling technical products earning more than those selling non-technical ones, and sales managers earning more than both.
Key takeaways
- A remote sales career typically runs from setter or SDR to account executive, then splits into enterprise sales, account management, partnerships or management.
- The SDR to AE move is the biggest step in both pay and skill. Plan for it from your first sales job.
- US BLS figures are benchmarks only. Nigeria-based contractors are usually paid less, and pay rises mainly through closing, deal size, market and languages.
- Keep a monthly numbers log. Verifiable results are your strongest asset with employers abroad.
- Plan for time zones, power and internet backup, contractor status and possible travel and visa requirements.
