What affects your pay
Base versus variable. BD offers are often split between base pay and commission. A $50,000 base with 25% variable and a $60,000 flat salary are not the same; ask what proportion of people hit target.
Deal size. Selling enterprise contracts to banks or telcos pays more than selling small-business software, because each deal is worth more.
Territory. Roles covering Nigeria or Africa for international companies are sometimes priced below global roles, but they can come with travel allowances and bigger titles.
Contract or employment. Some companies don't pay commission to contractors. Check this before comparing offers.
Negotiating your offer
Negotiate on-target earnings (base plus expected commission), not just base. Ask for the commission plan document before you sign and read it with a calculator.
Use your attainment history: "I hit 112% and 104% of quota in the last two years" carries weight. If you're opening a new market, ask for a ramp period with guaranteed commission for the first three to six months, because pipeline takes time to build.
If travel is involved, agree in writing who pays for flights, hotels, visas and per diems.

Salaries for related roles
- Account Executive
An account executive (AE) runs the sales process from first meeting to signed contract: discovery calls, demos, proposals, negotiation and closing, against a revenue quota. Nigerians do close deals remotely for US, European and African companies, but AE roles rarely hire beginners, and the pay depends heavily on commission.
- Sales Development Representative
A sales development representative (SDR, sometimes BDR) finds and contacts potential business customers by cold call, email and LinkedIn, qualifies them and books meetings for account executives. Nigerians are hired as remote SDRs by software companies, agencies and outsourcing firms, usually on US or European hours, and it's the standard first step towards a closing role.
- Customer Success Manager
A customer success manager (CSM) owns a group of business customers after they buy, making sure they get results from the product so they renew and spend more. Nigerians do win remote CSM roles, including EMEA roles at global software companies, but it is rarely a first job: most CSMs come from support, onboarding or account management.
