African man. Guy in a black suit. Mixed people work together

To move from sales development to account executive, you need proof that you can close deals as well as book them. Some companies promote SDRs after about a year of hitting target. Others hire AEs from outside, and they usually want around two years of closing experience. For a Nigeria-based SDR at a foreign company, the internal route is usually the faster and safer one.

That matters for your money and your career. AE roles usually come with a higher on-target income and much more control over what you earn. They also come with more risk if you move before you're ready. This guide covers what changes between the two jobs and how long the move tends to take. It explains how to build closing evidence while you're still booking meetings and how to make the case to your manager. It also covers the parts specific to Nigeria: time zones, contractor pay and commission, and running live demos when NEPA takes light in the middle of a call.

Quick answer

Most SDRs become account executives through internal promotion after about 12 to 18 months of consistently hitting their meeting or pipeline target. At GitLab, for example, SDRs become eligible after 12 months, and they still have to apply and interview. To get promoted, show that you can run discovery, present and handle objections. Close any small deals you're allowed to. Then ask your manager what the written criteria are. External AE ads usually want two or more years of full-cycle closing experience.

What changes when you move from SDR to account executive

An SDR (sales development representative) creates opportunities. A BDR (business development representative) is the same idea, though some companies use BDR to mean the outbound role specifically. An account executive turns those opportunities into signed contracts and owns the revenue number. The day-to-day work, the way you're measured and the way you're paid all change.

Typical measureMeetings or opportunities acceptedQuota attainment in dollars
ConversationsShort first callsDiscovery, demos, negotiation

ForecastingRarelyWeekly, to your manager

The biggest change is ownership. As an SDR, your job usually ends when a meeting is accepted. As an AE, you're responsible for everything that happens after that. That covers qualifying properly and bringing in the buyer's finance or legal team. It also covers chasing a contract that has gone quiet for three weeks. You're then expected to say, with a straight face, whether that deal will close this month.

GitLab's public job-family page shows the metrics side clearly. Its sales development roles are measured on "Sales Accepted Opportunity Attainment vs Goal" and "Net ARR Pipeline Generated" (GitLab Handbook, as of October 2026). Those are pipeline metrics. An AE is judged on closed revenue against quota, which is a different and less forgiving number.

How long the move from SDR to AE usually takes

Expect about a year as a realistic minimum and closer to 18 months as the norm. Very few companies publish their rules, and the numbers you see online are mostly opinions. Here is what we could actually verify.

What one company publishes

GitLab's handbook says SDRs and BDRs become eligible for promotion after 12 months in the role, based on performance. It says promotion is not a given and requires a formal application and interview. Account Executive, SMB is listed as one of the typical next roles after BDR (GitLab Handbook, as of October 2026). SMB means small and medium-sized businesses, which usually have smaller deals and faster cycles. Many SDRs land their first AE seat there.

GitLab is a single example, but it's a useful one. You become eligible at 12 months, you only get promoted if you've performed, and you still have to go through an interview. Expect something similar elsewhere, whether or not the rules are written down.

What the tenure data suggests

The Bridge Group, a sales consultancy, looked at about 205 people on LinkedIn who had moved from SDR to AE at North American companies. It counted anyone who lasted six months or less as an AE as a failure. People with 11 months or less of SDR experience failed at a rate of 55%. For people with 16 months or more, the failure rate was 6%. People who changed company to get the AE title failed 41% of the time, against 26% overall (The Bridge Group).

Treat this carefully. It's an informal analysis from 2017, not a peer-reviewed study. The author also notes that some people who were let go don't say so on LinkedIn. Still, it points the same way as GitLab's rule: AEs who were promoted after very little SDR time tend not to last. So does changing company to get the title.

Internal promotion or a new company: which route works from Nigeria

For most Nigeria-based SDRs, the internal route is better. Your current employer already pays you from abroad, knows your work and doesn't need to be convinced that someone in Lagos or Enugu can sell to its customers. A new employer has to take a chance on your location and your closing ability together.

What external AE ads ask for

Two live ads, both checked in October 2026, show what an outside employer expects:

  • Ashby, Mid Market Account Executive, EMEA (French Speaking). Remote, but limited to European countries such as France, the UK, Germany, Spain and Ireland. It asks for "2+ years of full-cycle closing experience" and wants someone confident enough to "self-source >50% of your own pipeline". It lists "Prior B/SDR experience" only as a bonus. The stated range is €110K to €195.5K, with equity and commission (Ashby job board, published 8 September 2026). Nigeria-based applicants aren't eligible for this one. We include it to show the bar, not as a role to apply for.
  • AmpiFire, Account Executive, Content Marketing SaaS. Listed as worldwide and fully remote. It asks for 2+ years of B2B SaaS sales experience, a record of hitting targets, C2-level English and availability during US Eastern and Pacific business hours. Pay is up to $4,000 a month base, with $90,000 on-target earnings (OTE) and uncapped commission (AmpiFire on Teamtailor, as of October 2026). A job board that copies the ad also tags it worldwide (Remote Rocketship).

Both ads ask for full-cycle closing, which means you've taken deals from first call to signature yourself. SDR experience on its own rarely meets that bar. This is why an external jump straight from SDR is hard, and why the Bridge Group failure rate for people who switched companies is higher.

Ads change and close. Always confirm the location rules on the live ad before applying. If you want to check how to read wording like "EMEA" or "worldwide", see what EMEA means in a remote job description.

When going external makes sense

Look outside if your company has no AE team in your region, has a hiring freeze, or tells you plainly that AEs must live in the US or UK. In that case, consider an SMB or "full-cycle SDR" role at a smaller company that hires worldwide. Some of these let you close small deals yourself, which gives you the experience the bigger ads ask for.

The skills gap between booking and closing

Most SDRs are already good at prospecting, writing short messages and handling cold rejection. The skills below are the ones AE interviewers will test, and most SDR jobs don't build them on their own.

Discovery

Discovery means asking questions to find out what the buyer's problem costs them and who decides on budget. You also need their timeline and what they're comparing you with. Weak discovery is the main reason demos turn into "we'll get back to you". Many teams use a qualification framework such as BANT, MEDDIC or MEDDPICC. Learn whichever one your company uses and use its terms in your CRM notes now.

Demos and presentations

A good demo shows the three things this buyer cares about, not every feature. Practise a 20-minute version of your product demo and record yourself. If you can't say why a feature matters to this particular buyer, cut it.

Objection handling and negotiation

Price, timing and "we already use a competitor" come up in almost every deal. AEs also negotiate payment terms, discounts and contract length. Watch how the AEs you book for deal with these, and write down the phrases that work.

Pipeline management and forecasting

AEs keep many deals moving at once and report which ones will close. You need to update the CRM (usually Salesforce or HubSpot) honestly and give each deal a clear next step with a date. For the mechanics, see how to manage a remote sales pipeline.

Multi-threading

On larger deals you'll talk to several people at the customer's company, not just your first contact. Getting a second and third contact involved early protects the deal if your champion leaves or goes quiet.

A 12-month plan to get promoted from SDR to account executive

This plan assumes you're already an SDR or BDR at a company that has AEs. Change the timing to fit your company's rules once you know them.

  1. Months 1 to 3: hit your number and find out the rules. Consistent attainment is the minimum entry requirement. In your first proper one-to-one, ask your manager: "What does someone need to show to be considered for an AE role here, and is it written down anywhere?"
  2. Months 3 to 6: shadow closing calls. Ask two AEs whether you can join their discovery and demo calls in listen-only mode. Take notes on the questions they ask and how they handle objections. Offer to write the call summary for them, which gets you in the room and helps them too.
  3. Months 4 to 8: improve the quality of what you book. Track how many of your meetings become real opportunities and how many of those close. An SDR whose meetings close at a good rate is showing exactly the judgement an AE needs.
  4. Months 6 to 9: run parts of the cycle yourself. Ask to run the first discovery call on a few of your own meetings, with the AE listening. Some teams let SDRs close very small deals or renewals. Take that if it's offered.
  5. Months 8 to 10: get certified and practise. Take any internal sales training. The free HubSpot Academy Inbound Sales certification (about three hours, as of October 2026) covers discovery conversations and tailored presentations. It won't get you promoted by itself, but it gives you shared language for interviews.
  6. Months 10 to 12: make the case. Collect your evidence into one document (see the next section) and ask for a promotion conversation. If the answer is "not yet", ask exactly what's missing and agree a date to review it.

If you're not an SDR yet, start with entry-level remote sales jobs and the sales development representative career guide. If you're moving across from support work, see moving from customer service into remote sales.

How to build closing evidence while you're still an SDR

A promotion committee or an outside hiring manager wants evidence they can see. Keep a running record from your first month, because trying to rebuild a year of numbers from memory doesn't work.

What to record:

  • Monthly attainment against your meeting or opportunity target, with the target stated
  • Pipeline value you created, in dollars, if your CRM shows it
  • How many of your booked meetings became qualified opportunities and how many of those closed
  • Any deals or renewals you closed yourself, with the size and how long the cycle took
  • Calls you ran with an AE listening, and what feedback you got
  • Process work, such as a sequence you wrote that other SDRs now use, or new hires you trained

Example (hypothetical): Chiamaka is an SDR for a US software company. Over 12 months she hits target in 10 of them. She tracks that the opportunities she created turned into a set number of closed deals, and she can name the AE and the dollar value for each one. She has run discovery on eight calls with an AE listening and has closed three small renewals herself. When she asks for promotion, she sends a one-page summary with those figures rather than a list of how hard she has worked. This is the kind of record that gives a manager something concrete to argue for in a promotion meeting.

Don't round up or inflate any of these numbers. Your manager can see the CRM, and an external employer may ask for a reference. A wrong figure can cost you the role. For how to present this kind of record to employers in other companies, see how to build a remote sales portfolio.

A message to start the promotion conversation

Example (hypothetical), sent to your manager on Slack or by email:

"Hi Mark, I'd like to talk about moving into an AE role over the next six months. Over the last year I've hit target in 10 of 12 months, and I've run discovery on eight calls with Tola listening. Could we use our next one-to-one to go through what you'd need to see from me, and set a date to review it?"

It's short, it gives facts and it asks for criteria and a date. Don't make it sound like a complaint.

Nigeria-specific things to plan for before you take an AE role

Time zones and call hours

Most AE work is live calls, so you work your buyers' hours, not yours. Nigeria is on WAT (UTC+1) all year with no daylight saving. US Eastern 9am to 5pm is 2pm to 10pm in Lagos in summer and 3pm to 11pm in winter (US clocks change on 1 November 2026). US Pacific 9am to 5pm is 5pm to 1am in summer and 6pm to 2am in winter. UK hours are 10am to 6pm in Lagos in winter and the same as Lagos in summer.

The AmpiFire ad above asks for availability across Eastern and Pacific hours. Before you accept a US-focused AE role, test whether you can run sharp demos at 11pm for months at a time. Ask whether European or African accounts exist, because EMEA territories fit Lagos hours much better.

Power and internet during demos

A dropped SDR call is annoying. A dropped demo with a buyer's procurement team can lose you the deal. AEs in Nigeria need backup power that lasts a full evening (an inverter with batteries, solar, or a generator) and two internet connections. A fibre or wireless ISP plus a MiFi, or a second network on your phone hotspot, works. Test screen sharing on both before an important call. If you can, keep a headset and a wired connection for important calls.

How pay and commission reach you

AE pay is usually quoted as OTE (on-target earnings): base salary plus the commission you earn at 100% of quota. With the AmpiFire structure, a $4,000 a month base is about ₦5,448,000 a month at the CBN rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (23 October 2026). The $90,000 OTE works out to $7,500 a month, about ₦10,215,000, but only if you hit quota. Below target you earn less, and commission is often paid a month or a quarter after the deal closes.

Before you accept, check three things in writing. First, whether commission is paid on signature or on customer payment. Second, whether there's a ramp period with a reduced quota for your first months. Third, what happens to commission on deals that close after you leave. For evaluating the full offer, see how to evaluate a remote sales job offer. For how base pay compares with commission-heavy roles, see remote sales jobs with a base salary.

Many Nigeria-based sales staff are paid as contractors through a platform such as Deel or Remote, or by direct invoice. Our guide on contractor versus EOR employee arrangements covers what that means for you. For getting commission into your account cheaply, see how to receive dollar payments in Nigeria. Bigger, irregular commission payments also make your tax position as a remote worker in Nigeria more important to keep track of, so save records from the first payment.

Pay benchmarks versus what you'll be offered

Published AE ranges such as Ashby's €110K to €195.5K are for staff living in Europe. They are not what a Nigeria-based contractor will usually be offered. Remote pay for Nigeria-based workers is usually below local pay in the US or Europe. Use our account executive salary guide and SDR salary guide for dollar and naira figures. Treat any US or European figure as a ceiling, not a promise.

Common mistakes SDRs make when chasing the AE title

  • Moving too early. The Bridge Group data, limited as it is, shows high early failure for people promoted with less than a year of SDR time. A failed AE stint is harder to explain than an extra six months as an SDR.
  • Taking an AE title with no real pipeline. Some small companies offer "AE" roles that are really commission-only cold calling. If there's no inbound lead flow, no SDR support and no base pay, read about commission-only sales jobs first.
  • Booking volume at the expense of quality. Lots of meetings that never close tell a manager you can dial, not that you can judge a deal.
  • Ignoring the AEs you work with. They're your best references and the people who will be asked about you. Make their lives easier.
  • Thinking a certificate is enough. Courses help, but managers promote on numbers and on what they've seen you do on calls.
  • Not reading the location rules. An AE ad that says "remote, UK" means UK residents. Applying anyway wastes your time.
  • Ignoring how commission is paid. A higher OTE with a delayed payout and a heavy clawback clause can leave you with less money than you'd expect from the headline figure.

Getting ready for the AE interview

AE interviews almost always include a role-play: a mock discovery call, a demo or a negotiation, often with a sales manager playing a sceptical buyer. Many also ask you to talk through your numbers and to forecast a hypothetical pipeline. Prepare a clear story about a deal you influenced from first touch to close, and be honest about which parts you led. Our account executive interview questions cover the common questions, and how to complete a sales role-play assessment goes through the mock call step by step.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to go from SDR to account executive?

Usually 12 to 18 months, sometimes longer. GitLab, for example, makes SDRs eligible after 12 months in the role, based on performance, with a formal application and interview. Informal Bridge Group data suggests reps with 16 or more months of SDR experience were far less likely to fail early as AEs than those with 11 months or less.

Can I become an account executive without being an SDR first?

Yes, but you'll need closing experience from somewhere else. Many AE ads, such as Ashby's mid-market role, treat SDR experience as a bonus, not a requirement. What they require is about two years of full-cycle closing. People from field sales, bank relationship roles or agency account management sometimes qualify directly if they can show closed revenue.

Is it better to get promoted internally or apply to a new company as an AE?

For most Nigeria-based SDRs, internal promotion is the better route. Your employer already pays you from abroad and knows your work. In the Bridge Group analysis, people who changed company to become AEs failed more often (41%) than the group overall (26%).

Do remote account executive jobs accept applicants from Nigeria?

Some do, many don't. As of October 2026, AmpiFire's AE role is listed as worldwide, while Ashby's EMEA AE role is limited to European countries. Always check the location section of the live ad, and treat "remote, UK" or "remote, US" as meaning you must live there.

How much more does an account executive earn than an SDR?

AEs usually have higher OTE, but more of it depends on hitting quota. As one published example, AmpiFire's worldwide AE role offers up to $4,000 a month base and $90,000 OTE (as of October 2026). See the SDR pay guide for remote roles for figures to compare against, and remember that commission below quota pays less than the OTE headline.

What should I study to move from SDR to AE?

Focus on discovery, demos, objection handling and forecasting, and learn the qualification framework your company uses (often MEDDIC or BANT). The free HubSpot Academy Inbound Sales certification covers discovery and tailored presentations. Shadowing real closing calls teaches you more than any course.

Can I work US hours as an AE from Nigeria?

You can, but it's late. US Eastern business hours are 3pm to 11pm in Lagos in winter and 2pm to 10pm in summer. Pacific hours run past midnight. If you can, ask for European or African territories, which overlap better with WAT.

Key takeaways

  • An account executive owns closed revenue. An SDR creates pipeline. Interviewers test discovery, demos, negotiation and forecasting.
  • Expect at least 12 months as an SDR, more often 12 to 18 months. GitLab, for example, sets 12 months as the minimum for eligibility and still requires an interview.
  • Internal promotion is usually safer and faster than applying for AE roles elsewhere, which typically ask for two or more years of full-cycle closing.
  • Keep an honest written record of your attainment, the pipeline you created and any deals you closed. That record is what wins the promotion conversation.
  • From Nigeria, plan for late US call hours, backup power and internet for demos, and commission paid in dollars, possibly as a contractor.
  • Published European or US AE salaries are benchmarks. Nigeria-based offers are usually lower, and commission below quota pays less than OTE.
