A remote sales portfolio is a short pack of evidence. It shows a hiring manager abroad what you have sold, how you prospect and what you sound like on a call. For most Nigerians applying to remote SDR, account executive or business development roles, it does more for you than a longer CV.
The reason is simple. A sales manager in London or Austin can't watch you work the phones or check your name on a leaderboard. All they have is a CV that says "exceeded targets", and every other applicant says the same. A portfolio puts the proof in front of them: real numbers with context, sample outreach and a recorded pitch.
This guide covers what to put in the portfolio, how to present naira results to a dollar-thinking manager, and how to build one with no sales track record. It also covers where to host it on a small data budget and the mistakes that get portfolios ignored.
Quick answer
To build a remote sales portfolio, put together four to six pieces. Start with a one-page results summary (quota attainment, meetings booked, deal sizes). Add a sample outreach sequence, a two-to-three-minute recorded pitch or mock discovery call, and a discovery or qualification framework. Finish with an account plan or 30-60-90 day plan and proof of CRM skills. Anonymise employer data, give every number its context, and host it all in one PDF or Notion page linked from your CV.
What a remote sales portfolio is and why remote hiring needs one
A sales portfolio (sometimes called a "brag book") is a set of documents and short recordings that proves your sales ability. The CV is the summary. The portfolio is the evidence behind it.
Remote employers depend on that evidence more than office-based ones. They usually hire across countries, they can't call your old manager in Ikeja without effort, and they get many applications that say the same things. Look at what a current remote ad asks for. As of October 2026, Omilia's Sales Development Representative, EMEA posting wants:
- "a proven record of meeting outbound and meeting-booking targets"
- personalised outreach and confident discovery conversations
- experience with Salesforce, LinkedIn Sales Navigator and a sales engagement tool such as Outreach, Salesloft or Apollo
Every one of those can be shown in a portfolio. Only the first fits on a CV, and even there it's just a claim.
The Omilia ad also shows a limit that no portfolio can fix. It says "Remote" and covers Europe, the Middle East and Africa, but it doesn't list which countries applicants may live in. Before you spend an evening tailoring your portfolio to an ad, confirm that the role accepts people based in Nigeria. Our guide to checking whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents shows you how.
What to include: the six core pieces
You don't need everything below. Pick the pieces that match the role you want (see the role table further down). Four strong pieces beat eight weak ones.
| Piece | What it proves | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Results summary (1 page) | You hit numbers | Everyone with sales history |
| Outreach sequence | You can write cold emails and LinkedIn messages | SDR, BDR, appointment setter |
| Recorded pitch or mock call | Your voice, pace and English on a call | All phone-based roles |
| Discovery and qualification plan | You ask good questions | SDR, account executive |
| Account or 30-60-90 day plan | You think strategically | Account executive, BDM, account manager |
| CRM and tool proof | You can work in their stack | Everyone |
1. The one-page results summary
This is the most important page. It lists your three to six best numbers, each with its context. Every line should answer three questions: what you did, what happened and compared with what.
A weak line: "Top performer in sales team."
A strong line: "Booked 41 qualified meetings in Q2 2026 against a target of 30 (137%), selling a payroll app to SMEs in Lagos and Abuja by phone and WhatsApp."
Include whichever of these you can honestly support:
- quota attainment as a percentage, by quarter or year
- meetings booked or opportunities created
- pipeline you generated
- average deal size and sales cycle length
- win rate or conversion rate at a stage you owned
- rank in your team ("2nd of 14 reps"), if you can back it up
If you only have one good quarter, show that quarter. Don't stretch a single month into "consistently exceeded".
2. A sample outreach sequence
An outreach sequence is a planned series of touches (emails, LinkedIn messages, calls) sent to one prospect over one to three weeks. Show three to five touches for a realistic target buyer, and explain your reasoning in a sentence under each one: why this subject line, why this day, why this call to action.
If you used a real sequence at work, rewrite it with the company and prospect details removed. If you haven't, write one for a real product sold to a real type of buyer (more on this in the no-experience section).
3. A recorded pitch or mock discovery call
A two-to-three-minute video does more than anything else in the portfolio to calm a foreign manager's worries about accent, clarity and confidence. Pick one format:
- Elevator pitch: you pitching a product to a named type of buyer, camera on.
- Mock discovery call: a friend plays the prospect and you ask questions, handle one objection and book a next step. Get their permission to record.
Keep it short, with a clean background, a decent headset and no generator noise. One take done well beats a long video.
4. Discovery questions and a qualification framework
Discovery is the early conversation where you find out whether the prospect has a problem worth solving. Qualification frameworks give that conversation a structure. Two you will see in remote sales ads:
- BANT: Budget, Authority, Need, Timeline. Simple and common in SDR roles.
- MEDDPICC: Metrics, Economic buyer, Decision criteria, Decision process, Paper process, Identify pain, Champion, Competition. Used in enterprise and mid-market account executive roles.
Write eight to twelve discovery questions for one product, grouped under the framework's headings. Add a short note on what answer would make you move the deal forward or drop it. That note is what hiring managers look for.
5. An account plan or a 30-60-90 day plan
For account executive, account manager and business development roles, include one planning document:
- Account plan: take one target company (a public one), map its likely buyers, its probable pains and how you would get in.
- 30-60-90 day plan: what you would learn, do and deliver in your first three months in the role you're applying for.
Keep it to one or two pages. A plan that names the company's actual product and actual customer type shows you did your homework.
6. Proof of CRM and tool skills
Most remote sales ads name a CRM. Free, verifiable credentials help here:
- HubSpot Academy's Inbound Sales Certification is free and, as of October 2026, runs about 3 hours 6 minutes across 7 lessons with quizzes and a certificate. It covers prospecting, personalised outreach, exploratory calls and presenting.
- Salesforce Trailhead is Salesforce's free learning platform. You earn badges and practise in a free Trailhead Playground without needing a company Salesforce account.
Add the badge or certificate links, plus a screenshot of a pipeline or report you built in a practice account (never one from an employer's live CRM). For the wider skill set, see our guide to CRM skills for remote sales professionals.
How to present naira results to a foreign hiring manager
Many Nigerian sales results are in naira, from B2C or SME deals that look small next to US software contracts. Handle this openly instead of hiding it.
Lead with percentages and ratios. Quota attainment (120%), conversion rate (from 8% to 13%) and rank in a team mean the same thing in any currency. A manager in Dublin understands "137% of target" straight away.
Give currency figures with a conversion and a date. If you show a naira amount, add the dollar equivalent, the rate you used and when.
Example (hypothetical): You closed ₦18,000,000 in Q3 2026 against a ₦15,000,000 target. On your summary, write "₦18m closed against a ₦15m target (120%), about $13,200 at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM rate, 23 October 2026)." The percentage does the persuading. The conversion shows you aren't hiding the scale.
Explain the sale itself. Who was the buyer, how long did deals take, how many touches did they need? Selling a ₦250,000 annual subscription to busy SME owners by phone and WhatsApp is hard, repeatable outbound work. Remote SDR teams want that skill, so describe it plainly.
Anonymise and respect confidentiality. Remove customer names, phone numbers and anything from your employer's CRM. Read your employment contract or NDA before showing internal figures. If you can't share exact numbers, use ranges or percentages ("between 110% and 130% of quota for four straight quarters"). A portfolio full of other people's customer data tells a hiring manager you would leak theirs too.
Building a remote sales portfolio with no sales track record
You can still build a convincing portfolio. It will lean on spec work (samples you make yourself) and transferable results instead of quota numbers. Be honest that it's spec work, because hiring managers spot invented results fast.
Mine the selling you've already done
A lot of Nigerian work experience is sales under another name:
- running a POS business or a small shop and growing repeat customers
- recruiting agents for a fintech or insurance company
- selling plots, short-lets or rentals for a real estate firm
- upselling plans in a customer service job
- raising money or sponsors for a campus event or church programme
Turn each into a results line with a number: "Signed up 60 new POS agents in three months across Ibadan." If you're coming from support, our guide to moving from customer service into remote sales shows how to frame that experience.
Do a simulated project
The Coursera course Get Ready to Sell: Guided Projects and Portfolio Development is part of the Zoho Sales Representative Professional Certificate. It walks you through a simulated software company, with assignments that include creating prospect records in Zoho CRM, writing an email outreach strategy, building a BANT+ call script and writing a proposal. As of October 2026 you can enrol free, but the certificate costs extra (financial aid is available). Its outputs can go straight into your portfolio, labelled as a course project.
Create spec pieces for a real company
Choose a real company that hires remote salespeople. Then:
- Define its likely buyer from its website and case studies (for example, "heads of operations at UK logistics firms with 50 to 500 staff").
- Write a four-touch outreach sequence to that buyer.
- Write ten discovery questions under BANT.
- Record a two-minute pitch of the product.
- Put a one-line note at the top: "Spec work prepared for this application; not sent to real prospects."
If you apply to that same company, the spec pieces double as a tailored application. For the wider route into sales without experience, see entry-level remote sales jobs and our page on remote jobs that hire beginners.
What to lead with for each remote sales role
Different roles want different proof. Put the most relevant piece first.
| Role | Lead with | Also include |
|---|---|---|
| SDR / BDR | Outreach sequence, meetings booked | Pitch video, BANT questions |
| Appointment setter | Call recording, booking rate | Objection-handling notes |
| Account executive | Quota attainment, deal sizes | Discovery plan, account plan |
| Account manager | Retention and upsell numbers | Account plan |
| Business development manager | Partnerships or revenue won | 30-60-90 day plan |
The role guides for sales development representatives and remote account executives explain what each job involves day to day, which helps you choose your lead piece.
Where to host your portfolio (cheaply and data-light)
The best format is one link that opens fast on a phone and doesn't cost the reviewer, or you, much data.
| Format | Pros | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| PDF (3 to 5 pages) | Easy to attach and print | Keep it small; link videos, don't embed |
| Notion or Google Doc | Free, easy to update | Set sharing to "anyone with the link" |
| LinkedIn Featured section | Seen by recruiters already on your profile | Hard to show multi-page work |
| Personal website | Looks polished | Costs money and time to maintain |
For videos, Loom's free Starter plan allows 25 videos, a 5-minute maximum per screen recording and 720p quality as of October 2026. That's enough for a pitch and a mock call. Unlisted YouTube links are another free option.
A sensible set-up: a three-to-five-page PDF that opens with your results summary, with Loom links for videos and a link to the Notion version. Test every link from a phone on mobile data before you send it.
A step-by-step plan: build it over two weekends
Weekend one: gather and draft
- List every sales or sales-like result from the last three years, with numbers.
- Choose your three to six strongest results and write them as context-rich lines.
- Pick one target role type (SDR, account executive or account manager) and check two or three live ads for the tools and metrics they mention.
- Draft your outreach sequence and discovery questions for a product sold by one of those advertisers.
- Start the HubSpot Inbound Sales Certification or a Trailhead trail if you have no CRM credential.
Weekend two: record and assemble
- Record your pitch or mock call. Do three takes and keep the best.
- Write your account plan or 30-60-90 day plan.
- Put everything into one PDF and one Notion page, results summary first.
- Anonymise everything: search the file for client names, phone numbers and email addresses.
- Ask a sales friend to review it in five minutes. Anything they skip, cut.
- Add the link to your CV header, your LinkedIn Featured section and your email signature.
After that, update the results page every quarter while it's fresh.
Nigeria-specific things your portfolio should address
A foreign manager reading a Nigerian application often has unspoken questions. A good portfolio answers them before they come up.
Can you sell in our hours? Many remote sales teams prospect in their buyers' time zones. From 1 November 2026, a 9am to 5pm US Eastern day (EST) runs from 3pm to 11pm in Lagos. In summer (EDT) it runs from 2pm to 10pm. A UK day (9am to 5pm GMT) runs from 10am to 6pm in Lagos in winter, and in summer UK and Lagos hours are the same. If you have sold to customers abroad or worked evening shifts, say so on your results page. Our guide to selling to international customers from Nigeria covers this in more depth.
Will the line be clear? Your pitch video is your audio test. Record it on the headset and connection you'd actually use. Mention your set-up in one line: "Inverter backup, two internet connections (fibre and MiFi), noise-cancelling headset." Sales roles live on calls, so this line matters more than it would for a writer.
Does your experience transfer? Give Nigerian market context briefly. A manager in Berlin may not know what an "agent banking network" is, so one clause of explanation helps.
Can they hire you at all? A portfolio doesn't change an ad's location rules. "US only" or "must have right to work in the UK" usually means exactly that. Spend your portfolio effort on roles open to Nigeria-based applicants or worldwide contractors. If you're unsure whether you'd be an employee or a contractor, read contractor versus employee arrangements for Nigerians.
Using your portfolio in applications and interviews
A portfolio only works if people open it. Make that easy:
- In the CV: put the link next to your email and phone number, labelled "Sales portfolio (results, outreach samples, pitch video)". Our guide to writing a CV for international remote jobs covers the rest of the CV.
- In the application email or cover note: name one specific piece: "Page 2 has a four-touch sequence I wrote for your mid-market buyers."
- In the interview: offer to share your screen and walk through the results page in two minutes. It answers "tell me about your track record" with evidence.
- Before role-play rounds: many sales interviews include a mock call. Your discovery questions are practice material. See how to complete a remote sales role-play assessment and these SDR interview questions and answers.
If you've done freelance or commission-only sales, our guide on showing freelance experience on a CV explains how to present it without it looking like a gap.
Common mistakes that get sales portfolios ignored
- Numbers with no context. "₦40m in sales" means nothing without the target, the period and the deal type.
- Too long. If the results page isn't on page one, many reviewers won't find it. Aim for three to five pages.
- Leaking employer data. CRM screenshots with customer names are a red flag, not a strength.
- Invented or rounded-up results. Reference checks and interview questions expose them, and sales managers ask follow-up questions about numbers for a living.
- One generic portfolio for every role. Swap the lead piece and the spec sequence for each type of role.
- Broken or private links. Test on a phone, logged out, before every application.
- Unlimited free "trial work". A short spec sample is normal. If a "company" wants you to run a week of real outreach or close real deals unpaid before an interview, you're probably being used for free lead generation. If anyone asks you to pay for a "portfolio review" or "onboarding kit" before hiring, treat it as a scam. Our guide to remote job scams in Nigeria lists the common patterns.
Frequently asked questions
Do remote sales jobs really ask for a portfolio?
Few ads say "portfolio" outright, but most ask for proof that a portfolio provides. Ads commonly ask for a record of hitting targets, personalised outreach and named CRM tools. A portfolio shows all of that in one link, which makes your application easier to shortlist.
What should an SDR portfolio include?
An SDR portfolio should include a results summary (meetings booked, connection or reply rates), a sample multi-touch outreach sequence, a short pitch or call recording and a set of discovery questions. Add CRM proof such as a HubSpot or Trailhead credential if you can't show work from an employer's system.
Can I build a sales portfolio with no sales experience?
Yes. Use transferable results from customer service, retail, agent recruitment or fundraising, plus clearly labelled spec work: an outreach sequence, a pitch video and a discovery plan for a real company's product. A simulated course project, such as Zoho's guided project on Coursera, can fill gaps if you label it as coursework.
Should I convert my naira sales figures to dollars?
Lead with percentages, such as quota attainment and conversion rates, because they read the same in any currency. If you show naira amounts, add the dollar equivalent, the rate used and the date, so the reviewer understands the scale without guessing.
Is it legal to share my old company's sales numbers?
It depends on your contract and any NDA you signed, so read them first. Never share customer names, contact details or screenshots from an employer's CRM. Where exact figures are confidential, use percentages or ranges instead.
How long should my pitch video be?
Two to three minutes is enough. Hiring managers use it to judge clarity, pace and confidence, not to learn your whole method. Record it on the headset and connection you'd use in the job.
Does WorkRemote.ng charge to apply for remote sales jobs?
No. Applying for jobs listed on WorkRemote.ng is always free, and a Basic account lets you see and apply to every listing. Be wary of anyone who asks you to pay before an interview or job offer.
Key takeaways
- A remote sales portfolio is four to six pieces of proof, led by a one-page results summary with numbers in context.
- Percentages travel across currencies. Give naira figures with a dollar conversion, the rate and the date.
- With no sales history, use transferable results and clearly labelled spec work for a real company.
- Free tools (HubSpot Academy, Salesforce Trailhead, Loom's free plan) cover CRM proof and video.
- Anonymise everything and never invent or inflate a result.
- A portfolio doesn't override location rules, so check that a role accepts Nigeria-based applicants first.
