An e-commerce virtual assistant runs the day-to-day work of an online store from a laptop: uploading products, processing orders, answering customer emails, updating stock and keeping the store tidy. People in Nigeria can do this job for stores in the US, UK and Europe, mostly as contractors through VA agencies or directly for small store owners.

It's one of the more realistic remote routes for Nigerians without a tech degree, because the work is learnable and the tools are free to practise on. It's also crowded at the bottom, with plenty of low-paid gigs and some outright scams.

This guide explains what the job involves, how it differs from customer support or Shopify development, how to become a Shopify virtual assistant step by step, what live ads open to Nigeria showed when we checked in October 2026, what affects pay, and how to protect yourself when a client gives you access to their store.

Quick answer

An e-commerce virtual assistant handles the admin of an online store: product listings, orders, customer messages, inventory and simple marketing tasks, usually on Shopify, Amazon or Etsy. Nigerians can get these jobs remotely, typically as contractors for VA agencies or small store owners, but must check each ad's location rules. Learn the Shopify admin first, practise on a free development store, and work through staff or collaborator access, never the owner's password.

What an e-commerce virtual assistant actually does

Most online stores are run by one founder or a small team. The founder wants to spend time on suppliers, marketing and cash flow, not on resizing product photos or replying to "where is my order?" emails. An e-commerce VA takes over that repeatable work.

The job title varies. You'll see "e-commerce virtual assistant", "Shopify virtual assistant", "Shopify store assistant", "e-commerce operations assistant" and "online store assistant". The duties overlap heavily.

Task areaWhat you'd doTypical tools
Product listingsUpload products, write or edit descriptions, set variants and prices, add imagesShopify admin, Canva, Google Sheets
OrdersCheck new orders, flag fraud risks, update tracking, handle returnsShopify Orders, shipping apps
Customer serviceAnswer email and chat, process refund requests within the owner's rulesGorgias, Zendesk, Shopify Inbox
InventoryUpdate stock counts, alert the owner when items run low, chase suppliersShopify, spreadsheets
Store upkeepFix broken links, update banners, create discount codesShopify theme editor
Reviews and emailReply to reviews, schedule simple email campaignsReview apps, Klaviyo
ReportingPull weekly sales numbers into a simple sheetShopify Analytics, Google Sheets

You won't do all of these in every job. A store with lots of messages may hire you mainly for customer service. A store adding hundreds of products before a sale may want listings only. Read the ad for which part of the store you'll own.

What the job is not

An e-commerce VA is not a Shopify developer. Developers write theme code (Liquid, HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and build stores from designs. A VA works inside the store's admin with the tools already there. If you enjoy the technical side, the Shopify developer career guide explains that route, which usually pays more but needs coding skills.

An e-commerce VA is also not usually the store's marketer. Some VAs schedule emails or social posts, but running paid ads and owning revenue targets is a separate, more senior job covered in remote e-commerce marketing jobs.

E-commerce VA compared with similar remote roles

Many Nigerians apply for several of these at once, so it helps to know where they overlap.

RoleMain focusUsual entry point
E-commerce / Shopify VAStore admin across listings, orders, messagesAdmin or customer service background
Amazon VASeller Central listings, inventory, account healthAmazon-specific training
E-commerce customer supportTickets and chat onlyCustomer service experience
Shopify developerTheme code and store buildsCoding portfolio
E-commerce marketerAds, email, conversionMarketing results

Amazon work is its own specialism because Seller Central has its own rules on listings and account health. If marketplaces interest you more than Shopify stores, read the Amazon virtual assistant guide. For the general VA role across all industries, see our virtual assistant career guide.

How to become a Shopify virtual assistant

Shopify is the platform most e-commerce VA ads mention, so learning it first gives you the widest choice of jobs. You can practise without paying for a store.

Step 1: Learn the Shopify admin on a free test store

Join the Shopify Partner Program. Shopify's own help centre says the programme is free to join and includes unlimited test stores, as of October 2026. A test store (also called a development store) lets you practise everything a VA does: adding products, creating collections, setting up discount codes, placing test orders and changing the theme.

Spend two to three weeks working through the admin systematically:

  1. Add 20 to 30 products with variants (sizes, colours), proper titles and descriptions.
  2. Create collections and set up navigation menus.
  3. Place test orders, then fulfil, refund and cancel them.
  4. Create discount codes and automatic discounts.
  5. Edit the homepage, banners and announcement bar in the theme editor.
  6. Export products and orders to a spreadsheet, edit them and import them back.

Bulk import and export by CSV is the skill that impresses clients most, because it turns a two-day listing job into an hour.

Step 2: Understand how clients give you access

A legitimate store owner will never need your bank details to give you access, and you should never ask for theirs or for the owner's login. Shopify offers two proper ways in.

  • Staff account: the owner adds you as a user on their store with set permissions. This is the usual route when an agency or store employs you.
  • Collaborator account: Shopify Partners request access to a client's store from their own Partner account. Shopify's collaborator accounts help page explains that only Partners can request this access, the owner can require a 4-digit request code, collaborators don't count toward the store's user limit, and they must turn on two-step authentication to log in. Collaborators can't be made store administrators or given ownership of the store, and access expires if unused for 90 days (as of October 2026).

For a freelancer in Nigeria, the collaborator route is a good habit. It shows the client you know how Shopify works, it protects the owner, and it protects you: if something goes wrong in the store, there's a clear record of what access you had. Turn on two-step authentication with an authenticator app rather than SMS, since Nigerian SIMs sometimes miss international verification texts.

Step 3: Build proof of work

Clients hiring a Shopify VA want to see that you can do the tasks, not a certificate. Turn your test store into a portfolio:

  • Before-and-after screenshots of product pages you rewrote.
  • A short Loom-style screen recording showing you bulk-uploading 50 products from a CSV.
  • A sample "store health check" document: broken links, missing images, inconsistent prices you found on a public store and how you'd fix them.
  • Sample customer email replies for common situations (late delivery, wrong size, refund request).

Our planned guide on building a virtual assistant portfolio covers presentation in more detail.

Step 4: Add one support tool and one data skill

Most Shopify VA ads ask for one help-desk tool and spreadsheet competence. Gorgias and Zendesk come up often for e-commerce support. Google Sheets skills (filters, VLOOKUP or XLOOKUP, simple pivot tables) cover most reporting requests. You don't need every app, just enough to show you can learn the client's stack quickly.

Step 5: Apply where Nigerians are actually accepted

The next section explains where we found live e-commerce roles open to Nigeria and how to read the location line before you spend time applying.

Who hires e-commerce VAs, and can Nigerians apply?

Yes, Nigerians can apply for many e-commerce VA jobs, as long as the ad accepts applicants in Nigeria or worldwide. Plenty of ads are restricted to the Philippines, Latin America or the US, so the location line matters more than the job title.

E-commerce VA work usually comes through one of three routes.

RouteHow it worksEmployment type
VA staffing agenciesThe agency hires you and places you with a store clientUsually contractor
Direct store ownersA founder hires you through their own ad or LinkedInContractor or freelance
Freelance marketplacesYou bid on short projects, then win longer contractsFreelance

Almost all of these arrangements make you an independent contractor, not an employee with benefits. The difference affects tax, leave and notice periods; our guide on contractor versus employer-of-record employment explains what changes.

What live ads showed in October 2026

We searched job boards for e-commerce roles naming Nigeria or worldwide eligibility. Here's what we could open and check on 27 October 2026. These are examples to show what the market looks like, not recommendations, and any of them may have closed by the time you read this.

  • Fuelerate, Shopify Developer: the ad on Fuelerate's careers page lists the role as fully remote and worldwide, paying $1,300 to $1,500 a month. It's a coding role (Liquid, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Figma-to-theme work), so it shows where Shopify skills can lead rather than an entry VA job.
  • Scale Army Careers, DTC E-Commerce Marketing Manager: listed on Remote Rocketship as open to Nigeria, Egypt, Ethiopia, South Africa and Argentina, paying $3,300 to $4,000 a month on contract, asking for 4 to 8 years of e-commerce marketing experience and availability 9am to 5pm US Eastern time. It's a senior role, but it shows agencies do hire for e-commerce work from Nigeria.
  • NETSHAKE, VA roles: Remote Rocketship's Nigeria virtual assistant listings included part-time VA roles at NETSHAKE, which describes itself as a Shopify agency, open "anywhere". Both required German, a reminder that "anywhere" doesn't mean "anyone".

Aggregator pages such as Remote Rocketship's Nigeria e-commerce jobs page are useful for spotting employers, but always click through to the employer's own application page to confirm the location rules before applying. The headline salary figures on aggregator pages didn't match the pay in the individual ads we opened, so trust the ad, not the page summary.

What we didn't find is just as useful. Clearly advertised, entry-level Shopify VA jobs with published dollar pay and explicit Nigerian eligibility were scarce on the boards we checked. Many entry-level e-commerce VA ads we saw in search results were restricted to the Philippines. Expect your first role to come through an agency, a freelance platform or direct outreach to store owners rather than a polished job board ad.

How to read the location line

  • "Nigeria" or "Africa" named: you're in. Check the hours.
  • "Worldwide" or "Anywhere": usually fine, but read the whole ad for language, time-zone or payment conditions.
  • "Philippines", "LATAM" or "US only": don't apply. The employer is set up to pay or hire only in those places.
  • "EMEA": Europe, Middle East and Africa, so Nigeria is normally included, but confirm on the application form.

How much do e-commerce virtual assistants earn?

Pay for e-commerce VAs varies widely, and we couldn't verify a reliable market average for entry-level roles open to Nigeria. The ads we opened in October 2026 show the range of Shopify and e-commerce work open to Nigerian applicants, from mid-level technical roles to senior management.

Role (ad checked October 2026)Advertised payIn naira at ₦1,362/$1
Shopify Developer, Fuelerate (worldwide)$1,300 to $1,500 a monthabout ₦1.77m to ₦2.04m
DTC E-Commerce Marketing Manager, Scale Army (Nigeria named)$3,300 to $4,000 a monthabout ₦4.49m to ₦5.45m

Naira figures use WorkRemote's house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026) and are gross, before platform fees, transfer costs or tax.

Entry-level VA work usually pays less than both of these, often by the hour. What moves your pay up:

  • Scope: a VA who only uploads products earns less than one who runs orders, support and reporting for the whole store.
  • Specialism: strong Shopify bulk-editing, Klaviyo or help-desk skills lift your rate.
  • Hours overlap: clients pay more for VAs who cover their own business hours.
  • Direct clients: agencies keep a margin, so direct contracts often pay more, though they carry more risk of late payment.
  • Track record: a client reference showing faster fulfilment or fewer support complaints is worth more than any certificate.

Our virtual assistant salary guide covers VA pay more broadly, and the planned guide on pricing your VA services helps if you're setting your own rate.

Example (hypothetical): working out your monthly income

Suppose a US store offers you $6 an hour for 30 hours a week. That's about 130 hours a month (30 × 52 ÷ 12), so $780 a month gross, or roughly ₦1,062,000 at ₦1,362 to $1. Now subtract what it costs you to work: withdrawal fees from your payment app, data, and fuel or solar costs for backup power. Then compare the result with a local job offer on an equal footing. The $6 rate is an illustration only, not a market average.

Working hours and your setup in Nigeria

Most Shopify stores that hire VAs are in the US, UK, Canada or Australia, and their customers write in during their own daytime.

  • US Eastern stores: 9am to 5pm Eastern is 3pm to 11pm in Lagos from 1 November 2026, when US clocks go back, and 2pm to 10pm in the US summer.
  • UK stores: 9am to 5pm London is 10am to 6pm in Lagos in winter (from 25 October 2026) and the same hours in summer.
  • Australian stores: Sydney is 9 or 10 hours ahead, so their working day is your night and early morning.

Many listing and inventory tasks can be done outside the client's hours, which is why some e-commerce VAs negotiate partial overlap: two or three shared hours for messages, the rest flexible. Customer service roles usually need full overlap.

Plan for November. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are the busiest weeks for most online stores, and clients expect extra hours and fast replies. If you're starting a new role in October, ask how the store handles the peak season.

Your setup matters more than in many VA jobs because orders and customer messages don't wait. Have backup power (inverter or solar, with a generator as last resort) and two internet sources, such as a fixed connection plus a MiFi or phone hotspot on a different network. Some e-commerce VA ads set minimum internet speeds and computer specifications, so test your connection before you apply.

Getting paid and staying safe

Agencies and direct clients usually pay through Payoneer, Wise, Deel, a freelance platform or a direct transfer to a receiving account. Fees and which options suit Nigerians are covered in our guide to receiving dollar payments in Nigeria. Agree the payment method, currency, invoice dates and who covers transfer fees in writing before you start.

E-commerce VA red flags

Some scams are built specifically around online-store work. Walk away if a "client" or "agency":

  • Asks you to pay for training, a store "starter kit" or software before you start.
  • Wants you to buy stock or run ads with your own card and promises to reimburse you.
  • Asks you to receive parcels at your address and reship them abroad.
  • Sends you a store owner's full login and password instead of a staff or collaborator invite.
  • Wants your BVN, NIN or bank login "for payroll" before any contract exists.
  • Only communicates on Telegram or WhatsApp and has no store you can see live.

Check that the store exists, that the person contacting you is connected to it, and that the job ad appears on the company's own site or a known board. Our guide on spotting remote job scams in Nigeria covers the wider patterns.

How to apply for e-commerce VA jobs

  1. Shortlist ads that name Nigeria, Africa, EMEA or worldwide, and confirm the hours.
  2. Tailor your CV to the store tasks in the ad: product uploads, order handling, customer messages. Name the tools you've used.
  3. Attach or link one piece of proof: your test-store walkthrough video or before-and-after product pages.
  4. In your message, mention the store's niche and one quick improvement you spotted on its site. Store owners respond to people who've looked at their store.
  5. Expect a paid or unpaid trial task, such as listing five products or replying to sample tickets. A short trial is normal; days of unpaid work is not.
  6. Before accepting, confirm the rate, hours, payment method and how access will be granted.

For interview preparation, our list of virtual assistant interview questions covers the questions e-commerce clients also ask.

Frequently asked questions

Can I become an e-commerce virtual assistant with no experience?

Yes, but you'll need proof that replaces experience. Practise on a free Shopify test store, build a short portfolio of listings and support replies, and expect your first role to be smaller or part-time. Admin, retail or customer service experience in Nigeria counts and should be on your CV.

Do I need to pay for Shopify to learn it?

No. Shopify's Partner Program is free to join and includes test stores, as of October 2026, so you can practise the full admin without a paid plan. You only need a paid plan if you want to run a real store yourself.

What's the difference between a Shopify virtual assistant and an e-commerce virtual assistant?

A Shopify virtual assistant is an e-commerce virtual assistant who works on Shopify stores. The duties are the same; the title just names the platform. Some e-commerce VAs work on Amazon, Etsy or WooCommerce instead, and each platform has its own admin to learn.

How do clients give a virtual assistant access to their Shopify store?

Through a staff account or a collaborator account, never by sharing the owner's password. Collaborator access is requested by Shopify Partners, can require a 4-digit code from the owner, and can't include administrator or ownership rights. Turn on two-step authentication either way.

Are e-commerce virtual assistant jobs full-time?

Some are, but many are part-time or project-based, especially with small stores. Agency placements are more likely to be full-time contractor roles with fixed hours. Full-time direct employment with benefits is uncommon for VAs hired from Nigeria.

Is e-commerce VA work the same as dropshipping?

No. Dropshipping is a business model where you run a store yourself; an e-commerce VA is paid to work in someone else's store. Be wary of "VA jobs" that turn into a pitch to buy a dropshipping course.

Which e-commerce VA skills pay the most?

Skills tied to revenue or time saved usually pay more: bulk product management by CSV, email marketing in Klaviyo, help-desk management in Gorgias or Zendesk, and simple sales reporting. Pure data entry pays least because it's easiest to replace.

Key takeaways

  • An e-commerce virtual assistant runs store admin: listings, orders, customer messages, inventory and light marketing, mostly on Shopify.
  • Nigerians can apply where the ad names Nigeria, Africa, EMEA or worldwide; many entry-level ads are restricted to the Philippines or US, so read the location line first.
  • Shopify's Partner Program is free and includes test stores, so you can learn the job before anyone pays you.
  • Work through staff or collaborator access with two-step authentication, never the owner's password.
  • Live ads we checked in October 2026 showed $1,300 to $1,500 a month for a worldwide Shopify developer role and $3,300 to $4,000 for a senior e-commerce marketing role open to Nigeria; entry VA pay is lower and varies.
  • Expect US or UK hours, a busy November and the need for backup power and internet.
