Remote travel coordinator jobs are real, and you can do the work from Nigeria. The catch is that most jobs open to Nigerians don't carry the title "travel coordinator". They come as executive assistant, virtual assistant or booking assistant roles. Dedicated corporate travel desks and travel agencies mostly hire people in specific countries.

That difference decides where you should spend your time. Imagine applying to 40 ads marked "Remote Travel Coordinator" and later finding out that 35 of them only accept US residents. You've lost a month.

This guide covers what the job involves day to day and the types of travel work that exist. It also covers which types are realistically open to applicants in Nigeria, the skills and tools employers name (including Amadeus and other booking systems), how US pay benchmarks compare with what you're likely to be offered, how to apply, and the scams aimed at people who handle bookings. It also answers how to get a remote booking assistant job, because that is the same skill set under a different name.

Quick answer

A remote travel coordinator books and manages trips for a company's staff or for clients: flights, hotels, ground transport, visas and changes when plans fall apart. From Nigeria, the most realistic way in is through executive assistant, virtual assistant or booking assistant roles where travel is a large part of the job. Corporate travel desks and travel management companies usually need GDS experience and often restrict roles to certain countries.

What a remote travel coordinator actually does

A travel coordinator makes sure people get where they need to go, within budget, and that someone is there to fix problems. In a remote role you do all of it online: email, booking platforms, supplier portals and chat.

The core tasks are similar from one employer to the next:

  • Collecting trip requests: dates, destinations, traveller preferences and budget approval.
  • Comparing and booking flights, hotels, car hire, trains and airport transfers.
  • Building an itinerary the traveller can follow, with confirmation numbers, addresses and check-in times.
  • Checking passport validity, visa needs and entry rules for each traveller's nationality.
  • Rebooking after cancellations, missed connections or schedule changes, often at short notice.
  • Recording costs, applying the company travel policy and preparing expense reports.
  • Getting quotes from suppliers for group trips, offsites and events.

The BLS says travel agents in the US advise on destinations, plan itineraries, book reservations, calculate costs and explain required travel documents (US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook). Coordinators do most of the same work, but usually for one organisation's travellers rather than paying members of the public.

Example (hypothetical): one difficult Tuesday

A US-based founder you support is due in London on Thursday. At 2pm Lagos time, her airline cancels the Wednesday evening flight from New York. You find two alternatives and check which one keeps her hotel booking valid. You message her the options with prices, rebook once she replies and move the hotel check-in by a night. Then you update the shared itinerary and log the fare difference for the expense report. All of it takes about 40 minutes, and she never has to phone the airline.

Employers pay for that kind of calm, quick problem-solving more than for the routine bookings.

The main types of remote travel coordination work

"Travel coordinator" covers several quite different jobs. Each has its own entry requirements and its own odds for someone living in Nigeria.

Type of roleWhat you mostly doRealistic from Nigeria?
EA or VA with travel dutiesBook trips for one executive or a small team, alongside calendar and inbox workYes, the most common route
Corporate travel coordinatorBook for a company's staff and enforce its travel policySometimes, often country-restricted
Travel management company (TMC) consultantHandle bookings for many corporate clients in a GDSHard, usually needs GDS experience and local hiring
Booking or reservations assistantManage reservations for rental hosts, tour operators or small agenciesYes, often freelance or contract
Event and group travel coordinatorPlan travel and accommodation for conferences, retreats or toursPossible with event experience
Leisure travel plannerSell holidays to the public, usually for commissionRarely suitable: often US-licensed and commission-based

Executive and virtual assistant roles with heavy travel

This is the best route in for most Nigerian applicants. Founders, consultants and sales leaders who travel a lot often hire one assistant to manage their calendar, inbox and every trip. Ads frequently list "complex domestic and international travel arrangements" as a core duty. For the wider role, see our guide to becoming a remote executive assistant from Nigeria and the comparison in virtual assistant vs executive assistant.

Corporate travel desks and travel management companies

Large companies either run their own travel desk or outsource to a travel management company (TMC). A TMC is an agency that books and manages business travel for corporate clients. TMC consultants work inside a global distribution system (GDS), the reservation network airlines and hotels use to sell inventory to agents. Amadeus, Sabre and Travelport's Galileo are the main ones. TMC jobs usually ask for years of GDS experience. Many are tied to the country where the TMC holds its contracts and payroll.

Leisure travel planners

Many US ads labelled "remote travel coordinator" are for agencies selling holidays to the public, and pay is commission or "performance-based earnings". The BLS notes that some US states require travel sellers to hold a business licence or register with the state (BLS). Those rules matter if you're selling to US consumers. They are one more reason this route rarely suits someone working from Lagos or Enugu.

Remote booking assistant jobs: the same skills under another name

A remote booking assistant manages reservations for a business or individual. In practice it's a travel coordinator role with more guest messaging and less policy work. Clients include short-let and holiday rental hosts, boutique hotels, tour operators, yacht and safari outfits, and small travel agencies that need back-office help.

Typical booking assistant tasks:

  • Replying to enquiries and booking requests on Airbnb, Booking.com or the client's own website.
  • Keeping availability calendars in sync so no date is double-booked.
  • Sending check-in instructions, reminders and review requests.
  • Passing changes, refunds and complaints to the owner according to their rules.
  • Coordinating cleaners, drivers or local guides by message.

To get a booking assistant job:

  1. Learn the host side of one platform properly. Read Airbnb's and Booking.com's partner help pages and practise until you can explain calendar sync, cancellation policies and payouts.
  2. Learn one property management system (PMS), the software hosts use to run several listings from one dashboard. Hostaway and Guesty are common examples. Many have free demos or help centres you can study.
  3. Build two or three work samples: a guest message template set, a sample check-in guide and a booking tracker in Google Sheets.
  4. Pitch rental hosts and small tour operators directly on LinkedIn, and apply through freelance platforms and remote job boards.
  5. Ask for a paid trial week with clear response-time targets.

Response time sells this job. A host in Florida or Lisbon cares that guest messages get answers within minutes, including at night their time. Living in Nigeria can help here because your working day covers their night.

Can you get a remote travel coordinator job from Nigeria?

Yes, if the employer or client accepts people living in Nigeria. Many dedicated travel coordinator ads don't, so check the location line before anything else.

When we checked live boards in October 2026, we found two patterns worth knowing:

  • "EMEA" does not automatically include Nigeria. Search results showed INFUSE advertising "Travel Coordinator (Remote within EMEA, Contract)" roles. When we opened INFUSE's Greenhouse board, those travel roles were no longer listed. The remote contract roles still open named specific countries, and South Africa was the only African one (INFUSE careers on Greenhouse, checked October 2026). Our explainer on what EMEA means in a remote job ad covers this in more detail.
  • Assistant staffing firms often pick a short list of countries. Assist World's Lever board showed about 30 remote executive assistant, virtual assistant and coordinator roles. The locations were limited to the Philippines, South Africa, Colombia, Argentina, Mexico and the United Kingdom, with no Nigeria (Assist World jobs on Lever, checked October 2026).

This isn't a judgement on Nigerian candidates. Companies restrict locations because of payroll set-up, contractor agreements, data rules and the countries their staffing partner already works in. It does mean you should search for roles that name Nigeria, Africa or "worldwide". Or apply to employers who hire you as an independent contractor or through an employer of record (EOR). Our page on contractor vs EOR employee status explains how each arrangement works.

How to read the location line on a travel job ad

What the ad saysWhat it usually means for you
"Remote, US" or a US cityUS residents only, unless the ad says otherwise
"Remote, EMEA"Some countries in Europe, Middle East and Africa. Check the list
"Work from anywhere" with a US city attachedUnclear. Ask before applying
"Worldwide" or "Anywhere" with no cityLikely open, but confirm payment method and hours
Freelance project on a marketplaceUsually open internationally, as a contractor

An example of the unclear kind: a Destination Careers ad on Lever titled "Remote Travel Coordinator (Work From Anywhere)" listed Denver, Colorado. It said you could "work from anywhere with an internet connection" and did not state any country restrictions (Destination Careers ad on Lever, checked October 2026). Before you invest in an ad like that, send a short question asking whether applicants living in Nigeria are eligible and how they would be paid.

Our guide to verifying whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents explains how to check eligibility step by step.

Skills and tools employers ask for

Travel coordination looks easy until you have to rebook three people across two time zones during a strike. Employers screen for the skills behind that.

Booking skills

  • Fare logic. Know refundable from non-refundable fares, change fees, fare classes and what "basic economy" removes. This is how you avoid costing your employer money.
  • Routing judgement. Know minimum connection times, when a cheap itinerary with a self-transfer is a bad idea and which airports are painful to connect through.
  • Documents and entry rules. Check passport validity, visa requirements and transit visas for the traveller's nationality, not your own.
  • Accommodation sense. Know distance to the meeting venue, cancellation deadlines and which room rates include breakfast or taxes.

Tools you'll meet

Tool typeExamplesWhere it's used
Global distribution system (GDS)Amadeus, Sabre, GalileoTMCs and agencies
Corporate booking platformSAP Concur, Navan, TravelPerkIn-house travel desks, EA roles
Rental and hotel platformsAirbnb, Booking.com, Hostaway, GuestyBooking assistant roles
Everyday adminGoogle Workspace, Microsoft 365, SlackEvery role

You don't need all of them. An EA role may only need you to be quick in a corporate booking platform and Google Calendar. A TMC role needs GDS commands.

Skills that decide who gets hired

  • Written English that is short and clear. Travellers read your messages on a phone in a taxi.
  • Time zone arithmetic without mistakes. A meeting at "9am" means nothing until you know whose 9am.
  • Calm under pressure. When travel goes wrong, it goes wrong at night and on weekends.
  • Discretion. You'll handle passport copies, card details and executives' private schedules.

Training and certificates worth considering

You don't need a certificate for most EA or VA roles that include travel. A clean booking track record and good samples matter more. For TMC or agency roles, structured GDS training helps.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) lists diploma courses including Foundation in Travel and Tourism with Amadeus, with Sabre and with Galileo. It also lists Travel and Tourism Consultant, a Travel Operations Diploma, and eLearning courses such as Geography in Travel Planning and Serving the Travel Customer (IATA training for ID Card holders). IATA's page doesn't show prices as of October 2026. It does say holders of an IATA travel agent ID card get 25% off. Get a current quote from IATA or an IATA-authorised training centre before paying, and confirm whether the course includes live GDS practice access.

Some Nigerian travel agencies and training centres also run Amadeus or Galileo courses. If you go that way, ask to see the GDS training environment you'll work in, and ask what certificate you get.

If you aren't sure you want travel work long term, start cheaper. Learn one corporate booking tool from its help centre, practise building itineraries in Google Docs, and take the route through a general remote virtual assistant career first.

Pay: what the numbers say and what applies to you

The best public benchmark is US data, and it's a ceiling rather than what you'll be offered from Nigeria. The BLS reports a median of $50,160 a year ($24.11 an hour) for US travel agents in May 2025. The lowest 10% earned under $34,610 and the top 10% over $76,660. Earnings often include commissions and service fees (BLS). The BLS projects little or no employment change for 2025 to 2035.

That median works out to about $4,180 a month. At WorkRemote's house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), that is roughly ₦5.69 million a month. Treat it as a US benchmark only. Employers hiring travel and assistant contractors from Africa usually pay well below US local salaries, and we couldn't find a reliable published source for Nigeria-based travel coordinator pay.

What actually moves your rate:

  • Role type. A TMC consultant with GDS experience or an EA to a frequent-travelling executive is paid more than a part-time booking assistant.
  • Contract type. Full-time contract, part-time retainer or hourly freelance.
  • Hours. Covering US overnight or weekend shifts can justify a higher rate.
  • Proof. A portfolio of real itineraries (with personal details removed) and references from travellers.

For dollar figures on the closest roles, see our remote virtual assistant salary guide and the executive assistant salary page. When getting paid, the main choices are Payoneer, Wise, Grey and similar apps. Our guide to receiving dollar payments in Nigeria compares them.

How to get a remote travel coordinator job from Nigeria

  1. Pick your entry lane. Choose EA/VA with travel, booking assistant, or TMC/agency. Your CV, samples and search terms all depend on that choice.
  2. Build proof before you apply. Create two or three sample itineraries for realistic trips (for example, a three-city European sales trip and a team offsite). Include flights, hotels, transfers, a visa note and a backup plan.
  3. Rewrite your CV around travel outcomes. Put bookings, rebookings, budgets and volume near the top.
  4. Search with the right terms. Use "executive assistant travel", "travel coordinator", "booking assistant", "reservations coordinator", "guest experience" and "travel operations". Then filter by location.
  5. Apply only where Nigeria is allowed or the ad is genuinely worldwide. Ask before applying if the ad is unclear.
  6. Prepare for a practical test. Many employers give a booking scenario: plan a trip within a budget or handle a cancellation by email. Practise timing yourself.
  7. Pitch small clients directly. Rental hosts, boutique tour operators and travel-heavy founders on LinkedIn often hire without a formal job ad.

Example (hypothetical): CV bullet points that show travel skill

  • Booked and managed 120+ domestic and international trips a year for three directors, keeping spend within policy.
  • Rebooked travellers within two hours during airline cancellations, with no missed client meetings recorded.
  • Built a shared itinerary template in Google Docs that cut traveller follow-up questions.
  • Checked visa and passport requirements for travellers of five nationalities before each booking.

Use numbers only if they're true. If you did this for a Nigerian employer, a church conference or a family business, say so. Real work counts even if it was unpaid.

Working the role from Nigeria: hours, power and payments

Time zones

Lagos is on West Africa Time (WAT, UTC+1) all year. As of late October 2026, London is on GMT, so Lagos is one hour ahead. US Eastern time is five hours behind Lagos until 1 November 2026 and six hours behind after that. Covering a New York executive's 9am to 5pm in winter means working 3pm to 11pm Lagos time.

Travel problems don't follow office hours. Agree in writing which hours you cover, what counts as an emergency and how the traveller reaches you out of hours. Our guide to working with international customers across time zones has scheduling tips.

Power and internet

A traveller stuck at an airport can't wait for NEPA to restore power. Have an inverter or solar backup and two internet options, such as a home ISP plus a MiFi or phone hotspot. Keep the employer's booking tool logged in on your phone too, so you can rebook from anywhere if your laptop goes down.

Company cards and money

Legitimate employers provide a company card, a corporate booking tool linked to company billing, or approval for each payment. You should never book travel with your own money and wait to be refunded. You should never receive money into your account to "pay suppliers" either.

Scams that target travel coordinator applicants

Travel coordinator and booking assistant ads attract scammers because the job involves payments and personal documents. Warning signs include:

  • "Buy your own booking software" or "pay for GDS access to start." Employers provide the tools for paid roles.
  • Commission-only "travel advisor" offers that need an upfront fee for a host agency, training pack or website.
  • Requests to receive funds and forward them to hotels or "suppliers". This can make you part of money laundering.
  • Asking for your passport scan and BVN before any interview with a real person at a company you can verify.
  • Interviews held only on Telegram or WhatsApp text with an offer the same day.

Our main guide on spotting remote job scams in Nigeria covers how to check an employer. The planned guide on avoiding scams in virtual assistant jobs focuses on assistant-type roles.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Nigerian work as a remote travel coordinator for a foreign company?

Yes, when the company accepts applicants living in Nigeria. Many dedicated travel coordinator ads are limited to the US, specific European countries, the Philippines or South Africa. Executive assistant, virtual assistant and booking assistant roles that include heavy travel work are more often open to Nigeria. Check the location line on each live ad.

Do I need Amadeus or Sabre to become a travel coordinator?

Not for most remote EA, VA or booking assistant roles. Those usually use corporate booking platforms, airline and hotel websites or rental platforms. GDS skills (Amadeus, Sabre or Galileo) matter mainly for travel management companies and agencies, which usually expect hands-on experience rather than a certificate alone.

How do I get a remote booking assistant job with no experience?

Learn the host side of Airbnb or Booking.com, study one property management system such as Hostaway or Guesty, and build a few samples: message templates, a check-in guide and a booking tracker. Then pitch rental hosts and small tour operators directly and offer a short paid trial. Our guide to remote jobs for beginners with no experience covers other entry routes.

How much does a remote travel coordinator earn?

There's no reliable published figure for Nigeria-based travel coordinators. As a US benchmark, the BLS reports a median of $50,160 a year for US travel agents in May 2025. Remote contractors hired from Nigeria are usually paid less than US local rates, depending on role type, hours and experience.

Is a travel agency job in Nigeria good experience for remote work?

Yes. Ticketing, GDS use, visa processing and dealing with demanding customers at a Nigerian agency all transfer directly. Describe the volume, routes and systems you handled, and turn real itineraries (with personal details removed) into portfolio samples.

What hours do remote travel coordinators work from Nigeria?

It depends on where the travellers are. UK roles mostly match Lagos daytime, give or take an hour. US East Coast roles in winter (from 1 November 2026) mean working from 3pm to 11pm Lagos time for a 9am to 5pm day. Many roles also expect some availability for travel emergencies, so agree the out-of-hours rules in writing.

Are commission-only remote travel advisor jobs worth it?

Rarely for someone in Nigeria. Commission-only leisure travel roles often target US consumers, may involve US state licensing or registration, and some charge joining or training fees. A role with a fixed salary or hourly rate is safer while you build experience.

Key takeaways

  • From Nigeria, most travel coordination work comes through executive assistant, virtual assistant and booking assistant roles, not jobs titled "travel coordinator".
  • Corporate travel desks and travel management companies often restrict locations and expect GDS experience. Read every location line, and remember that "EMEA" may not include Nigeria.
  • Booking assistant work for rental hosts and tour operators is the most accessible entry point, usually as a contractor.
  • US pay data (BLS median $50,160 a year in May 2025) is a benchmark. Expect Nigeria-based contractor offers to be lower.
  • Proof matters more than certificates: sample itineraries, rebooking stories and clear CV numbers.
  • Never pay for tools, training packs or bookings to get or do the job.
