A virtual assistant (VA) usually handles a spread of admin tasks for several clients, often on hourly or part-time contracts. An executive assistant (EA) usually supports one senior leader full time and is trusted with their calendar, inbox, travel and confidential work. If you're a Nigerian weighing up remote admin work, this choice shapes your income, your hours and how quickly you can grow.

The two titles overlap a lot, and plenty of job ads mix them ("Virtual Executive Assistant"). Most articles comparing them are written by agencies selling assistants to founders. This one is written for the person doing the work. It covers the real difference in daily tasks, what US pay benchmarks say (and why they aren't what you'll be offered from Lagos), which roles Nigerians can actually apply for, how the time zones work, and how to move from VA work into an EA role when you're ready.

Quick answer

Choose virtual assistant work if you want a quicker start, flexible part-time hours and variety across clients. Choose the executive assistant track if you already have a few years of admin or office experience, can work a fixed shift in your employer's time zone, and want a single full-time role with more responsibility. Many people start as VAs and move into EA roles once they can show senior-level support experience.

The real difference between a virtual assistant and an executive assistant

The difference comes down to three things: whose work you handle, how much you're trusted with, and how you're contracted.

A virtual assistant is a remote administrative worker, usually a freelancer or contractor, who takes on defined tasks for one or more clients. Typical work includes inbox clean-up, scheduling, data entry, research, social media posting, customer replies and light bookkeeping. Clients often buy a set number of hours each week.

An executive assistant works for a senior person, such as a founder, CEO or director, and acts as their right hand. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics describes executive assistants as giving high-level support to an office and its top executives, including reviewing incoming documents, doing research and preparing reports, and in some cases supervising clerical staff (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, as of October 2026).

The skills overlap. What changes is judgement. A VA is told what to do. An EA is expected to decide what the executive should see, what can wait, and what they should handle without being asked.

What "virtual executive assistant" means

"Virtual executive assistant" is a remote EA: someone who supports a senior person full time, or close to it, from another location. The title is common in ads from offshore staffing agencies. Read the duties rather than the title. If the ad lists board papers, travel for a CEO and confidential information, it's an EA role. If it lists Canva posts, data entry and cold calls for a small business, it's a VA role with a bigger title.

Virtual assistant vs executive assistant side by side

This table summarises typical patterns seen in job ads and in the BLS and O*NET descriptions. Individual roles vary.

What the work looks like day to day

The same tools show up in both jobs: Google Workspace, Microsoft Outlook, Zoom, Slack, a calendar tool. How you use them is different.

A typical virtual assistant week

Example (hypothetical): Chiamaka in Ibadan works with three clients. Monday morning she clears a US coach's inbox and books discovery calls through Calendly. In the afternoon she uploads product listings for a UK Shopify store. Twice a week she schedules LinkedIn posts for a consultant in Canada. Each client sends instructions in a shared Trello board or Notion page, and she logs her hours.

The upside is variety and the ability to grow by adding clients. The downside is context-switching and the risk of one client leaving at short notice. For handling several clients at once, see managing multiple VA clients.

A typical executive assistant week

Example (hypothetical): Tunde in Lagos supports the founder of a London software company, working UK office hours. Before the founder logs on, he has sorted the inbox into "needs you today", "I've replied" and "FYI". He moves three meetings to protect a deadline, books flights for a conference, drafts the agenda for Thursday's board call and chases two managers for their updates. When an investor emails, he knows from past context whether to reply himself or flag it.

O*NET's task list for executive assistants matches this kind of work: managing schedules, arranging travel, preparing correspondence and reports, preparing agendas, taking and circulating minutes, and doing research for executives and boards (O*NET OnLine, 43-6011.00, as of October 2026). The role sits in O*NET's "Job Zone Three: Medium Preparation Needed", which means previous related experience is expected.

Pay: what the benchmarks show, and what applies to you

US government data shows a clear pay gap between the two levels of admin work. As of the May 2025 estimates, the median annual wage was $76,590 for executive secretaries and executive administrative assistants and $48,310 for secretaries and administrative assistants overall (BLS).

Treat these as benchmarks only. They are medians for people employed in the United States. They are not what a Nigeria-based assistant will be offered. Companies hiring offshore assistants usually pay well below US local rates, and VAs found through agencies or freelance platforms are often paid hourly, sometimes for only part of the week.

Two points from the benchmarks still apply to you:

  • The step from general admin to EA carries a premium. Clients and employers pay more for someone they trust with a senior leader's time. That pattern tends to show up in offshore pay too, even though the actual numbers are lower.
  • Steady hours beat a high hourly rate. A VA with a good hourly rate but 15 billable hours a week can earn less than an EA on a modest full-time monthly fee.

Contractor or employee

Most foreign companies hire Nigeria-based assistants as independent contractors: you invoice, you're paid gross, and you handle your own tax and equipment. Some hire through an employer of record (EOR), which makes you an employee with a payslip and sometimes paid leave. EA roles are more likely than VA work to come with a monthly fee and a longer contract, but neither is guaranteed. Our guide to contractor vs EOR employee arrangements explains the difference. Who can actually apply from Nigeria

This is where EA and VA work differ most for a Nigerian applicant, and where the ads mislead most often.

"Remote from Africa" often means South Africa

When we reviewed a public aggregator page of remote EA jobs tagged "Africa" in October 2026, none of the 50 visible listings named Nigeria, and several of the employers' own ads that we opened or found were limited to specific countries (Jobgether, remote executive assistant jobs in Africa, checked October 2026). One example: an executive assistant ad from the recruitment firm Remote Recruitment, supporting a UK employer, is fully remote but open only to candidates in South Africa, working 09:00 to 17:00 UK time, with pay of R25,000 to R30,000 a month (Remote Recruitment ad on Workable, checked October 2026).

Offshore EA agencies often recruit only from certain countries (commonly South Africa, Kenya, the Philippines or Latin America) because their clients have asked for those countries or because of how the agency's payroll is set up. An "Africa" tag on an aggregator is not proof that Nigeria qualifies.

VA ads are more often "anywhere"

On the same aggregator's page of remote VA jobs shown to Nigerian visitors, all 50 visible listings were tagged "Remote from Anywhere" rather than Nigeria specifically, and 22 of the 50 were part-time (Jobgether, remote virtual assistant jobs in Nigeria, checked October 2026). Many came from VA staffing agencies building "talent pools", which means you join a pool and wait to be matched with a client. That's not the same as an open vacancy.

In practice, the VA route is usually easier to enter from Nigeria. The EA route has fewer roles open to Nigerian residents, so a Nigerian applicant needs a strong application and a clear eligibility check on every ad.

How to check eligibility on any assistant role

  1. Open the employer's own ad, not just the aggregator summary.
  2. Look for a country list, a "location" drop-down on the application form, or a line such as "must reside in".
  3. Check whether the pay is quoted in a local currency (rand, pesos) that points to one country.
  4. If it says "anywhere" or "worldwide", check for a time-zone requirement you can actually meet.
  5. If it's still unclear, send a short question to the recruiter before spending an hour on the application.

Every listing on WorkRemote's admin and HR jobs shows the company, its website and where applicants may live. WorkRemote reviews listings and aims to publish genuine remote roles open to applicants from Nigeria, but can't check every detail, so still read the live ad.

Time zones and working conditions from Lagos

EA roles nearly always need you to work during the executive's day. VA work is more forgiving, because many tasks can be done asynchronously. Lagos is on WAT (UTC+1) all year.

Employer locationTheir 9am to 5pmIn Lagos
UK (winter, GMT)9am to 5pm10am to 6pm
UK (summer, BST)9am to 5pm9am to 5pm
US Eastern (summer)9am to 5pm2pm to 10pm
US Eastern (winter, from 1 Nov 2026)9am to 5pm3pm to 11pm
US Pacific (summer)9am to 5pm5pm to 1am
Dubai9am to 5pm6am to 2pm

A US Eastern EA role means working into the late evening in Lagos for the whole contract, often with calls that run over. An Australian executive starting at 9am Sydney time is starting at 11pm or midnight in Lagos. UK and European roles suit Nigerian EAs best, and that time-zone match is one of your strongest selling points in an application.

Both roles need dependable power and internet, but the stakes differ. A VA who loses power for two hours can usually catch up in the evening. An EA who drops off a board call or misses a travel change can lose the client's trust in one afternoon. If you're aiming at EA work, budget for an inverter or solar backup and two internet routes (for example, a MiFi plus a phone hotspot on a different network).

Which career fits you: a self-assessment

Count how many statements in each column describe you honestly.

Points to virtual assistantPoints to executive assistant
You have under two years of office workYou've done two or more years of admin or office support
You want part-time or flexible hoursYou can commit to a fixed full-time shift
You enjoy variety and different clientsYou prefer depth with one person
You're still building referencesYou have a former boss who will vouch for you
You want a niche (real estate, e-commerce, podcasts)You enjoy calendars, travel and meeting prep
You're studying or have caring dutiesYou're comfortable with confidential information

Mostly left column: start as a VA, pick a niche, and build a track record. Our guide on becoming a virtual assistant with no experience covers the first steps, and the virtual assistant career guide lists skills, tools and courses.

Mostly right column: apply for EA roles now. Read the executive assistant career guide for the skills employers test.

Evenly split: take VA work with one or two senior clients and present it as executive support. That's the most common route into EA work.

Moving from virtual assistant to executive assistant

Many EAs started as VAs. The move is less about new qualifications and more about proving you can be trusted with a senior person's time and information.

  1. Pick one senior client and go deep. Ask a founder or director client for more hours and more ownership: their full calendar, travel and meeting prep, not just one task.
  2. Start doing anticipatory work. Send a daily or weekly briefing: what's coming up, what you've handled, what needs their decision. This is the habit that marks out an EA.
  3. Document confidential handling. Note (without breaching confidentiality) that you managed executive inboxes, contracts or investor scheduling. These are the lines EA recruiters look for.
  4. Get comfortable with business tools. O*NET lists Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word, Zoom and Google Workspace among the most requested technologies for executive assistants, plus tools such as SAP Concur, QuickBooks and SharePoint in some roles (O*NET).
  5. Rewrite your CV around one executive. Replace "supported various clients with admin tasks" with specifics: "Managed calendar and travel for a UK founder across three time zones; prepared weekly board updates." Our upcoming guide on writing a VA CV that gets interviews shows how.
  6. Ask for a reference. A senior client willing to take a five-minute call from a recruiter often matters more than any certificate.
  7. Practise EA interview scenarios. Expect questions about conflicting priorities and confidentiality. See our executive assistant interview questions.

If you'd rather go towards running operations than supporting one executive, growing from VA to operations manager is the other common path.

Is the EA route future-proof?

BLS projects US employment of executive assistants to be essentially flat (0% change) over 2025 to 2035, partly because AI and digital tools let managers do tasks assistants used to handle (BLS). That's a US projection, not a forecast for offshore hiring, but the reasoning applies everywhere. Typing up documents and booking simple meetings is the part of both jobs that software is taking over. Judgement, discretion and follow-through are harder to automate. Build those, and learn the AI tools yourself so you're the one using them.

Common mistakes when choosing between the two

  • Applying for C-suite EA roles with no senior-support experience. Senior EA ads routinely ask for experience supporting directors or senior leaders. A general VA CV sent to these roles usually gets ignored.
  • Staying a generalist VA for years. "I can do anything" is hard to price. A niche (real estate, e-commerce, podcast or executive support) makes you easier to hire and easier to pay more.
  • Ignoring the location line. Applying to South Africa-only or Philippines-only roles wastes time and can annoy agencies you may want to work with later.
  • Taking an EA shift you can't sustain. A US West Coast schedule from Lagos can wear you down within months. Be honest about your hours before you accept.
  • Paying for "placement". Real employers and agencies don't charge you to be hired or matched with a client. Anyone asking for a training or registration fee is a red flag. Our guide to spotting remote job scams lists the common patterns.

Frequently asked questions

Is an executive assistant better paid than a virtual assistant?

Usually, yes. In US data, executive assistants had a median wage of $76,590 a year compared with $48,310 for administrative assistants overall (BLS, May 2025). Offshore pay for Nigeria-based workers is lower in both roles, but the EA premium generally holds because the work carries more responsibility.

Can a virtual assistant become an executive assistant?

Yes, and it's a common route. Take on fuller responsibility for one senior client (calendar, travel, inbox, meeting prep), document it on your CV and get that client to act as a reference. After a year or two of this, you can apply for EA roles credibly.

Do I need a degree to become an executive assistant?

Not always. BLS notes that executive assistants typically need several years of related work experience, and some employers prefer college courses or a bachelor's degree. In remote hiring, proven experience supporting senior people usually matters more than the degree itself.

Do remote executive assistant jobs accept Nigerians?

Some do, but fewer than you'd expect from the ads. Many remote EA ads tagged "Africa" are actually open only to South Africa or a short list of countries. Check the employer's own ad for a country list or "must reside in" line before you apply.

Is virtual assistant work full-time or part-time?

It can be either. Much VA work is part-time or hourly, and agencies often recruit into talent pools rather than for one specific vacancy. Full-time VA roles exist, often with one client or through a staffing agency.

Which time zones suit a Nigerian executive assistant best?

UK and European employers. UK office hours are 10am to 6pm in Lagos in winter and the same hours as Lagos in summer, and Central Europe is the same time as Lagos in winter. US roles mean afternoon-to-late-night shifts in Lagos.

Will AI replace virtual and executive assistants?

AI is already taking over routine tasks such as drafting, scheduling and data entry, and BLS cites these tools as one reason US EA employment is projected to stay flat to 2035. Assistants who handle judgement calls, confidential matters and coordination between people are harder to replace, especially if they use AI tools well themselves.

Key takeaways

  • A virtual assistant handles defined tasks for one or more clients; an executive assistant supports a senior leader full time and is trusted to use judgement on their behalf.
  • VA work is easier to start from Nigeria and more often flexible or part-time; EA roles pay more but expect prior assistant experience and a fixed shift.
  • US benchmarks (BLS, May 2025) show a large pay gap between EAs and general admin staff, but Nigeria-based offshore pay is lower in both roles.
  • Many "Remote from Africa" EA ads are limited to South Africa or other named countries, so check eligibility on the employer's own ad.
  • The most common route into EA work is deepening your support for one senior VA client and documenting that experience.
