Remote B2B sales jobs involve selling products or services to other businesses, usually software, payments, logistics or professional services, from home and often for a company abroad. Nigerians can get these roles, but mostly as sales development representatives (SDRs) or account executives working European or US hours, and only when the job ad accepts applicants based in Nigeria.

B2B sales is one of the better-paid remote routes that doesn't need a technical degree. It's also one of the toughest to start, because pay is tied to targets and employers want proof that you can book meetings and close deals.

This guide covers how B2B selling works, the roles in a typical sales team and how people move up, what pay looks like (including how commission is structured), the skills and tools employers test for, and how to check whether an international ad is actually open to someone in Lagos, Abuja or Enugu.

Quick answer

Remote B2B sales means selling to companies rather than individual consumers, usually by email, phone, LinkedIn and video calls. The usual entry point is an SDR role that books meetings for account executives, who close the deals. Pay normally combines a base salary with commission. From Nigeria, look for ads marked worldwide, EMEA or Africa that name Nigeria or don't restrict location, and expect European or US working hours.

What B2B sales actually involves

In B2B sales, the buyer is a business. You might sell payroll software to a 200-person company in Germany, a fraud-detection tool to a fintech in the UK, or freight services to a manufacturer in the US.

Three things make it different from selling to consumers:

  • Several people decide. A finance lead, an IT lead and an end user may all need to agree before anyone signs. You sell to a group, not one person.
  • The sale takes weeks or months. You run discovery calls, demos, trials, security reviews and price negotiations before a contract is signed.
  • Each deal is bigger and the relationship lasts. Many B2B products are subscriptions, so the company cares about renewals and expansion as much as the first sale.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics sums up the core B2B sales job well: wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives find prospective customers, explain product features, negotiate prices and terms, prepare contracts and follow up after the sale. Remote B2B roles do all of that through a laptop.

B2B vs B2C sales: which suits you

BuyerCompanies, teamsIndividuals
Deal lengthWeeks to monthsMinutes to days

If you like research, writing clear emails and running structured conversations with managers, B2B usually suits you better. If you prefer high volume and quick outcomes, look at B2C or appointment setting first.

The roles in a remote B2B sales team

Most B2B companies split the sales process into stages, with a different role for each. Knowing where each role sits tells you where you can start and where you can go next.

RoleMain jobTypical entry level
Sales development representative (SDR/BDR)Prospect and book meetingsEntry to 2 years
Account executive (AE)Run demos, negotiate, close2+ years of sales
Account managerGrow and renew existing clients2+ years
Customer success managerKeep clients using the productVaries
Sales engineer / solutions engineerTechnical demos and answersTechnical background
Sales manager / head of salesLead reps, own targetsSeveral years closing

Sales development representative (SDR or BDR)

SDRs, sometimes called business development representatives (BDRs), open the conversation. You research target companies, send emails and LinkedIn messages, make calls and book qualified meetings for an AE. Your target is usually meetings booked or pipeline created, not revenue closed.

This is the most realistic first remote B2B role from Nigeria. Our sales development representative career guide covers the skills and the path in detail.

Account executive (AE)

AEs take meetings from SDRs (and from inbound leads), run discovery and demos, handle objections, agree pricing and close. AEs carry a revenue quota. Roles are often split by customer size: SMB (small and medium businesses), mid-market and enterprise. Enterprise AEs handle the largest and slowest deals and are usually the most senior; see how to become a remote enterprise account executive.

The account executive career guide explains how people usually get there.

Account manager and customer success

Once a deal closes, someone has to keep the client and grow the account. Account managers focus on renewals and upsells. Customer success managers focus on adoption and making sure the client gets value. Both suit people who are better at relationships than cold outreach. Read the customer success manager guide if that side appeals to you more.

Sales engineer

Sales engineers sell technical products and answer the deep technical questions in a deal. The BLS reports a median pay of $124,900 a year for US sales engineers in May 2025, and says most have an engineering or related degree. It's a strong path for developers or IT support people who enjoy talking to customers.

Business development manager

In some companies "business development" means partnerships, resellers and new markets rather than direct selling. A BD manager might sign up distribution partners across West Africa or agree integrations with other software firms. The business development manager guide covers that version of the role.

The B2B sales career path, step by step

A common progression in a remote B2B team looks like this. Timelines vary a lot by company and performance, so treat this as a map rather than a schedule.

  1. SDR/BDR. Learn the product, the buyer and the outreach routine. Hit meeting targets consistently.
  2. Senior SDR or SMB AE. Start closing smaller deals, often while still prospecting.
  3. Mid-market AE. Larger deals, longer cycles, more stakeholders.
  4. Enterprise AE or strategic AE. The biggest accounts, multi-month deals, complex contracts.
  5. Branch out. Sales management, sales engineering, revenue operations, partnerships or customer success leadership.

Moving from SDR to AE is the step most people get stuck on. It usually depends on a record of hitting targets and showing that you can run a discovery call yourself. See how to progress from sales development to account executive for the details.

If you're coming from customer service, the move into an SDR role is common because you already handle objections and write clearly; read moving from customer service to remote sales.

How remote B2B sales pay works

B2B sales pay is usually quoted as OTE (on-target earnings): the base salary plus the commission you earn if you hit 100% of your quota. The split between base and variable pay differs by company and role. SDR roles often have a higher share of base pay than AE roles.

Example (hypothetical): reading an OTE offer

Example (hypothetical): a European software company offers a Nigeria-based SDR an OTE of $30,000 a year, split 60/40.

ComponentYearlyMonthly
Base salary (60%)$18,000$1,500
Variable at 100% of target (40%)$12,000$1,000 on average
Total at 100%$30,000$2,500
Total at 70% of target$26,400$2,200

At ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), the $1,500 monthly base works out to about ₦2,043,000 before tax and transfer fees. These figures illustrate the arithmetic only. They are not market rates.

Questions to ask about any OTE offer:

  • Is commission paid monthly or quarterly, and is it capped?
  • What share of the current team actually hit quota last year?
  • Is there a ramp period with a reduced target while you learn?
  • What happens to commission on a deal that closes after you leave?

For a full checklist, see how to evaluate a remote sales job offer. For offers with no base pay at all, read commission-only sales jobs: risks and benefits before you agree to anything.

US pay benchmarks (not what you'll be offered from Nigeria)

The BLS reports these medians for May 2025. They are useful for understanding where the profession sits, but they describe US-based employees, not remote contractors in Nigeria.

US occupation (BLS, May 2025)Median pay a yearApprox. in naira*
Sales reps, technical and scientific products$104,920₦142.9 million
Sales reps, other products$72,080₦98.2 million
Sales engineers$124,900₦170.1 million

*Converted at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026).

Remote pay for Nigeria-based workers is usually well below US local pay. Companies often set pay by location or hire through contractor arrangements. The account executive salary guide and the SDR salary guide give figures closer to what remote hires actually see. If you want to target roles with guaranteed pay, read finding remote sales jobs with a base salary.

Skills remote B2B employers test for

Hiring managers in B2B sales care less about your degree and more about whether you can do the work. The BLS notes that a high school diploma is generally enough for non-technical sales reps, while technical product sales usually need a bachelor's degree. Remote employers add a few skills of their own.

Core selling skills

  • Prospecting and research. Finding the right companies and the right person inside each one, then writing a first message that refers to something real about their business.
  • Discovery. Asking questions that uncover the buyer's problem, budget, timeline and who signs. Many teams use a framework such as BANT (budget, authority, need, timing) or MEDDIC; learn what they mean before interviews.
  • Objection handling. Answering "we already use a competitor" or "no budget this quarter" calmly and without arguing.
  • Written English. Most remote B2B outreach is written. Short, clear, typo-free emails win meetings.
  • Pipeline discipline. Updating your CRM every day so your manager, in another country, can see your deals without asking.

Tools you'll meet

Tool typeCommon examples
CRMSalesforce, HubSpot, Pipedrive
Prospecting dataApollo, LinkedIn Sales Navigator, ZoomInfo
Outreach sequencingOutreach, Salesloft, HubSpot Sequences

You don't need all of these. Being confident in one CRM matters most; see CRM skills for remote sales professionals. HubSpot's free CRM also lets you practise at no cost.

A free starting credential

HubSpot Academy's Inbound Sales Certification course is free, takes about three hours (7 lessons, 22 videos and 5 quizzes, as of October 2026), and covers identifying prospects, personalised outreach, exploratory conversations and sales presentations. A certificate won't get you hired on its own, but it shows initiative and gives you shared vocabulary for interviews.

Can you do remote B2B sales from Nigeria? Eligibility explained

Yes, when the ad accepts applicants based in Nigeria and doesn't need you to be legally able to work in another country. Many B2B sales ads are remote only within one country or region, because the rep sells to that market, speaks its language or must be employed there.

What location tags really mean

  • "Remote, US" or "Remote, UK". Usually requires you to live there and have the right to work there. Not open to you from Lagos.
  • "Remote, EMEA". EMEA means Europe, the Middle East and Africa, but many EMEA ads only hire in a few countries. When we checked an aggregator's list of remote account executive roles in October 2026, most EMEA listings were tied to one market, such as France, Benelux, the Nordics or the UK and Ireland. Read what EMEA means in a remote job description.
  • "Remote, Africa" or naming Nigeria. The best sign. Confirm it on the company's own careers page.
  • "Worldwide" or "anywhere". Promising, but check for time-zone requirements in the body of the ad. Our guide to what "worldwide remote" means from Nigeria explains the catches.

Aggregators sometimes get locations wrong. In October 2026 a search for remote SDR jobs in Nigeria brought up a Workable ad that, when we opened it, was listed as "Brazil (Remote)" and required US hours. Always open the employer's own ad before applying.

We couldn't confirm a live B2B sales ad from an employer's own careers page that named Nigeria as eligible during research for this guide, so we haven't named companies. Eligibility changes weekly. Check the live ad each time.

Employee, contractor or freelancer

Foreign companies hire Nigeria-based sales staff in three main ways:

  • Through an employer of record (EOR), such as Deel or Remote, which employs you on the company's behalf, often with benefits.
  • As an independent contractor, invoicing monthly, with no employer benefits and your own tax to sort out.
  • As a freelancer or agency rep, often booking appointments for several clients, sometimes commission-heavy.

The differences affect your pay, leave and tax. Our guide to contractor vs employee arrangements in Nigeria explains them.

Working hours, setup and getting paid

Time zones

Your hours follow the market you sell into, because buyers answer the phone during their working day.

MarketTheir 9am to 5pmLagos time now (winter)
UK9am to 5pm GMT10am to 6pm
Central Europe9am to 5pm CET9am to 5pm
US East9am to 5pm EST (from 1 November 2026)3pm to 11pm
US Pacific9am to 5pm PST6pm to 2am

In summer the UK is on the same time as Lagos, and US Eastern is 5 hours behind rather than 6. European and UK B2B roles are the easiest fit for normal Nigerian hours. US roles often mean evening shifts.

Your setup

Cold calls and live demos break when NEPA takes light or your network drops mid-sentence. Before applying, sort out:

  • An inverter, solar or generator backup that keeps your laptop and router running for a full shift.
  • Two internet options, for example a fixed broadband line or Starlink plus a MiFi, with a phone hotspot as a last resort.
  • A USB headset with a noise-cancelling microphone. Generators and street noise carry on calls.
  • A quiet, neat background for video demos.

Getting paid

Most Nigeria-based remote sales staff are paid in dollars through an EOR platform, a payment service or a domiciliary account. Commission may arrive separately from base pay, sometimes a month or quarter later. Our guide to receiving dollar payments in Nigeria compares the options and fees, and tax for remote workers in Nigeria covers what you owe on foreign income.

How to get your first remote B2B sales job

  1. Pick a lane. Choose one industry you can talk about credibly, such as fintech and payments, HR software, logistics, cybersecurity or marketing tools. Nigerian experience in banking, telecoms, FMCG distribution or fintech is real B2B experience; describe it that way.
  2. Learn the basics. Take the free HubSpot course, learn one CRM and practise writing short cold emails.
  3. Build evidence. Turn past work into numbers: accounts opened, meetings booked, revenue, renewal rate. If you have no sales history, prospect for a small local business for a month and record your results. See how to build a remote sales portfolio.
  4. Rewrite your CV for sales. Put targets and results at the top of each role. Recruiters scan for quota attainment.
  5. Target SDR and BDR roles first. Search for "SDR", "BDR", "business development representative" and "inside sales" with "EMEA", "Africa" or "worldwide".
  6. Apply with a short, specific message. Your cover note is itself a sales email. Mention the company's customers or a recent product launch.
  7. Prepare for the role-play. Most B2B sales interviews include a mock cold call or discovery call. Read how to complete a remote sales role-play assessment and the account executive interview questions.

Common mistakes and risks

  • Applying to US-only roles. It wastes your time and your application is filtered out automatically. Read the location line first.
  • Hiding numbers. "Managed client relationships" tells a sales hiring manager nothing. "Grew 40 SME accounts to ₦X in monthly volume" does, provided it's true.
  • Accepting commission-only work without checks. Some commission-only roles are genuine; many leave reps unpaid for months. Ask for the product, the price, the lead source and what current reps earn.
  • Paying to get a job. Legitimate sales employers never charge for training, starter kits or "lead packages". If someone asks for money, stop. Our guide to spotting remote job scams lists the warning signs.
  • Neglecting the CRM. Remote managers judge you by what they can see. Unlogged activity counts as no activity.
  • Underestimating US-hours fatigue. Night shifts every weekday wear people down. If you take a US role, plan your sleep, meals and power backup around it.

Frequently asked questions

Can Nigerians get remote B2B sales jobs with international companies?

Yes, but only roles whose ads accept applicants in Nigeria or Africa, or are genuinely worldwide. Many B2B sales roles are limited to one country, so check the location line and the company's own careers page before applying.

What is the difference between an SDR and an account executive?

An SDR finds prospects and books meetings; an AE runs those meetings and closes the deal. SDRs are measured on meetings or pipeline, AEs on revenue. Most people start as SDRs.

How much do remote B2B sales reps earn?

It varies widely by company, role and location. US medians for sales reps run from about $72,080 to $104,920 a year (BLS, May 2025), but Nigeria-based remote hires are usually paid less. Look at the actual OTE and base salary in each offer.

What does OTE mean in a sales job ad?

OTE means on-target earnings: base salary plus the commission you earn at 100% of quota. If you miss target, you earn less than the OTE; some plans pay more if you beat it.

Do I need a degree for remote B2B sales?

Usually not for non-technical sales, where proof of results matters more. The BLS notes that technical and scientific product sales typically need a bachelor's degree, and sales engineer roles usually need an engineering or related degree.

Is B2B sales experience in Nigeria valid for international roles?

Yes. Selling to businesses for a Nigerian bank, telecom, fintech or distributor is B2B experience. Describe it with numbers, the size of clients and the length of the sales cycle so a foreign recruiter can compare it.

What hours do remote B2B sales reps in Nigeria work?

You work the hours of your buyers. UK and European roles fit roughly normal Lagos office hours, while US East Coast roles mean about 3pm to 11pm Lagos time in winter and 2pm to 10pm in summer.

Which industries hire remote B2B salespeople most?

Software (SaaS), fintech and payments, HR and payroll platforms, cybersecurity and logistics are common. Our guide to finding remote SaaS sales jobs covers the largest of these.

Key takeaways

  • Remote B2B sales means selling to businesses through email, calls and video, usually with long sales cycles and several decision-makers.
  • The SDR/BDR role is the realistic entry point from Nigeria; AE, account management and sales engineering come next.
  • Pay is usually quoted as OTE, base plus commission at 100% of quota, so check the base pay and how many reps actually hit target.
  • US salary medians are benchmarks only; Nigeria-based remote hires are usually paid less.
  • Many "EMEA" and "worldwide" ads have hidden country or time-zone limits, so confirm eligibility on the employer's own ad.
  • Results with numbers, a solid CRM habit and reliable power and internet matter more than certificates.
