You get a remote marketing operations job by showing that you can run the systems behind a marketing team: the CRM, the email and automation platform, the lead data and the reports. Campaign ideas alone won't do it. Most hires come from people who already run HubSpot, Salesforce or email programmes in another role and then rename and package that experience.

Marketing operations ("marketing ops" or "MOps") is a good fit for remote work. The output lives in software, and companies care about clean data more than where you sit. It is not an easy first job, though, and many ads only accept people in the US, UK or EU.

This guide covers what the work involves, the job titles to search, the skills and certificates that count, how to build proof without a marketing ops title, and how to read eligibility and pay as a Nigeria-based applicant.

Quick answer

To get a remote marketing operations job from Nigeria, learn one marketing automation platform (HubSpot is the cheapest to start with) and one CRM. Add spreadsheet and basic reporting skills, and build two or three documented projects: a lead-scoring setup, an email workflow, a campaign dashboard. Apply to specialist or coordinator roles whose ads accept applicants in Nigeria, Africa or worldwide. Expect to need some experience next to marketing, sales or CRM work first.

What marketing operations actually involves

Marketing operations is the team that makes marketing measurable and repeatable. Marketers decide what to say. Marketing ops builds and maintains the forms, email workflows, lead routing, CRM fields, tracking and dashboards that turn that plan into something the business can count.

Remote job ads for the role list the same kinds of tools again and again: HubSpot, Salesforce and Marketo, plus Google Analytics, Zapier, Airtable and sometimes SQL. Duties include building campaigns, automating workflows, segmenting data, setting up forms and fixing problems where two systems (often Salesforce and HubSpot) don't sync properly.

TaskWhat it looks like day to dayTypical tools
Campaign buildEmails, landing pages, forms, listsHubSpot, Marketo, Mailchimp
Lead managementScoring, routing, lifecycle stagesSalesforce, HubSpot CRM
Data hygieneDeduplicating, fixing fields, importsCRM, Google Sheets, Excel
IntegrationsConnecting apps, fixing sync errorsZapier, native connectors
ReportingDashboards, attribution, UTM trackingGA4, HubSpot reports, Looker Studio
Planning and budgetQuarterly plans, vendor reviewsSheets, project tools

At senior level the job shifts from building to planning. In one senior role we opened in October 2026, 40% of the work was marketing operations: planning, OKRs (objectives and key results), performance analysis, budget and headcount planning, and evaluating vendors and tools. The rest was special projects and chief-of-staff work.

Marketing ops overlaps with several jobs, so search for all of them:

Can you get a remote marketing operations job from Nigeria?

Yes, but only with employers whose ads accept applicants where you live, and usually not as your first job. Marketing ops is a mid-level function. The work touches revenue data, so companies are cautious about giving it to someone untested.

Here are two real examples of what Nigeria-eligible ads look like:

  • GiveDirectly, Senior Manager, Marketing Strategy & Operations. The GiveDirectly job ad on Greenhouse is fully remote and lists Nigeria among its priority hiring countries, alongside Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, the UK, the US and others (checked October 2026). It asks for 5 to 7 years in strategy, consulting, agency or marketing/growth operations. It does not sponsor US or UK work visas. We found it through the Africa Rising jobs roundup of 25 October 2026.
  • A Marketing Operations & Administrative Assistant role on Remote4Africa, posted by an unnamed human resource services company. It was full-time, 100% remote and open to Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt and South Africa, with HubSpot reporting listed as a skill and working hours set in WAT to Egypt time. The listing was closed when we checked in October 2026, but it shows what the junior end looks like: support work for US clients, hired through an agency.

Both ads can change or close at any time, so always read the live ad.

How to read location wording in marketing ops ads

Ad saysWhat it usually means for you
Remote, US only / AMERNot open to Nigeria, even if fully remote
Remote, EMEASometimes open to Nigeria; check the country list
Remote, UK or EUUsually needs existing right to work there
Africa / listed countries incl. NigeriaOpen to you
Worldwide / anywhereOpen, but check time-zone and contract notes

EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) is the label that confuses people most. Our guide to what EMEA means in a job description explains how to check it.

People often miss marketing ops jobs because they search only for "marketing operations manager". Use these titles as keywords:

  • Marketing Operations Specialist, Coordinator or Associate (entry to mid level)
  • Marketing Automation Specialist
  • HubSpot Specialist, HubSpot Administrator, HubSpot Consultant
  • CRM Marketing Specialist, Email and CRM Specialist
  • Campaign Operations Specialist
  • Marketing Technology (MarTech) Specialist
  • Revenue Operations Analyst or Specialist

Agencies and HubSpot partner agencies hire a lot of these roles. They often run client accounts for US or UK companies and are more open to contractors abroad than in-house teams are.

Skills employers ask for

The skill that matters most is being able to own a system: set it up, keep the data clean and explain what the numbers mean. Here is what to learn, in a sensible order.

1. One marketing automation platform, properly

Pick HubSpot unless the jobs you want ask for something else. It shows up constantly in remote ads, and HubSpot Academy's courses are free to start. Learn lists and segmentation, forms, email, workflows, lifecycle stages, lead scoring and reports.

Marketo (Adobe) and Salesforce Marketing Cloud show up in enterprise roles. Both have paid exams. Check current fees on Adobe's and Salesforce's own certification sites before budgeting, because we couldn't confirm them.

2. CRM logic

Learn how a lead becomes a contact, then an opportunity, then a customer, and how the data moves between marketing and sales tools. Salesforce's free Trailhead learning platform is the usual place to start. If you already work in sales, our guide to using HubSpot for remote sales work overlaps a lot with this.

3. Data and spreadsheets

Expect imports, deduplication, VLOOKUP or XLOOKUP, pivot tables and spotting bad data. Basic SQL comes up in some ads and is worth adding once the spreadsheet basics are solid.

4. Tracking and reporting

You need UTM parameters, GA4 events and conversions, and a dashboard a manager can read in two minutes. Google describes its Analytics Academy courses as free e-learning, and the Google Analytics Certification is hosted on Skillshop.

5. Integrations and process

Learn Zapier or Make for connecting tools, plus clear written documentation. A remote marketing ops person who writes good how-to docs saves the team hours and gets trusted quickly.

About HubSpot certification

HubSpot's software certifications need more than a quiz. HubSpot's help page says you must complete practical exercises in your certification track. Some exercises are graded automatically from activity in your HubSpot account, and manual reviews can take five to seven business days. Before you start, check which exercises your account can actually do. The access needed for some tracks has changed over time, so confirm it in HubSpot Academy as of October 2026.

A certificate gets you past a filter. It won't get you an offer. The portfolio below matters more.

Be honest with yourself about the last row. Entry-level marketing ops roles that hire people with no marketing or CRM experience are rare. A year doing email campaigns or CRM admin for a local company, an agency or a freelance client is a quicker route than applying cold.

How to prove marketing ops skills without the job title

Hiring managers want to see a system you built, why you built it that way, and what changed. Put two or three of these projects in a short portfolio (a Notion page or Google Doc with screenshots is fine):

  1. Lead lifecycle and scoring model. Define stages (subscriber, lead, MQL or marketing qualified lead, SQL or sales qualified lead, customer), the scoring rules and the handover to sales. Build it in a HubSpot account and screenshot the workflows.
  2. Nurture workflow. A five-email sequence triggered by a form, with branching based on what the contact clicked.
  3. Campaign tracking setup. A UTM naming convention, GA4 conversions and a one-page dashboard.
  4. Data clean-up. Take a messy sample contact list, deduplicate and standardise it, and write the rules you used.
  5. Integration. A Zapier flow that sends new form leads to a Google Sheet and a Slack channel, with error handling written up.

Example (hypothetical): Ada runs email campaigns for a Lagos fintech. She documents the lead-scoring model she built in HubSpot, the dashboard she made for her manager and a clean-up of 8,000 duplicate contacts, with before-and-after screenshots and the numbers removed. On her CV the role reads "Email and CRM Marketing Specialist". The bullet points describe operations work: "Built lifecycle stages and lead scoring used by a five-person sales team" and "Cut duplicate contacts by consolidating three import sources."

Never share a real employer's customer data or dashboards. Recreate the setup with dummy data.

How to apply for remote marketing ops roles

  1. Set up searches by title, not just "marketing". Use the titles listed earlier and save them. On WorkRemote, the business and marketing job listings show where each employer accepts applicants.
  2. Check eligibility first. Read the location line, the country list and any visa or right-to-work line before you write a single word.
  3. Match the stack. If the ad says Marketo and you know HubSpot, say plainly what carries over and how fast you learn. Don't claim Marketo experience you don't have.
  4. Write numbers into your CV. Contacts managed, workflows built, report turnaround time, reduced bounce rates, hours saved by automation.
  5. Add a short audit to your application where it's allowed. Two or three specific, polite observations about the company's own sign-up form or email flow show that you think like an ops person.
  6. Prepare for a practical task. Common ones: design a lead-scoring model, find what's wrong with a broken workflow, or plan the tracking for a campaign launch.
  7. Answer application questions with examples. The GiveDirectly ad, for instance, asks applicants to show how they meet each hiring criterion with specific examples and to agree to a policy on AI use in the application.

What remote marketing operations jobs pay

Pay depends on seniority, the employer's pay policy and where you live. A US salary figure isn't what a Nigeria-based contractor will usually be offered.

US benchmark only: the US Bureau of Labor Statistics gives a median of $166,790 a year for marketing managers (May 2025). That figure covers all US marketing managers, not marketing ops specialists, and it reflects US local pay. Treat it as a ceiling for senior US-based roles, not as a target from Lagos.

Location-based pay in a real ad: the GiveDirectly senior manager ad (checked October 2026) publishes different base salaries by country:

LocationBase salary in the adNotes
United States$120,750 a yearPlus 10% bonus target
United Kingdom£77,600 a yearPlus 10% bonus target
Kenya$83,820 a yearPlus 10% bonus target
NigeriaNot publishedBenchmark shared during hiring

For scale only, the Kenya figure works out to about ₦114 million a year at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN rate, 23 October 2026). A Nigeria offer for the same role could be different. The ad also says the organisation doesn't negotiate salaries. That's unusual, so read each ad's pay policy.

Junior specialist and agency contractor roles pay well below senior figures like these. Our email marketing specialist salary guide gives a closer comparison for the roles many people move from. Higher-paying marketing jobs are covered in high-paying remote digital marketing jobs.

Working marketing ops hours from Nigeria

Time zones work in your favour for UK and European teams. Lagos runs on WAT (UTC+1) all year. As of late October 2026, UK clocks have gone back to GMT, so a 9am to 5pm London day runs 10am to 6pm in Lagos. Central European time matches Lagos in winter.

US employers are harder. US Eastern time is 5 hours behind Lagos until 1 November 2026 and 6 hours behind after that, so a 9am New York stand-up is at 2pm or 3pm in Lagos. Ops work also happens around campaign launches, which can mean evening checks. Ask about required overlap hours at interview.

The setup questions are practical:

  • Power: an inverter or solar backup that can run your laptop and router through a full workday. A broken sync during a launch can't wait for NEPA.
  • Internet: two connections, such as fibre or a MiFi plus a phone hotspot, because admin tools time out on a weak connection.
  • Security: you will hold admin access to CRMs full of customer data. Use a password manager, two-factor authentication and a laptop you don't share.
  • Payment: most offers come through a contractor arrangement, an employer of record (EOR) or a platform like Deel. Read how to receive dollar payments in Nigeria and contractor vs EOR employee before you sign, and keep records for tax as a Nigerian remote worker.

Mistakes and red flags

  • Applying to "Remote, US" ads. That's the most common wasted application. Check location first.
  • Listing tools without outcomes. "HubSpot, Salesforce, Zapier" means little. "Built 12 workflows that route leads to the right rep within five minutes" means a lot.
  • Overclaiming platforms. Marketing ops interviews often include screen-shares or live tasks, and gaps show quickly.
  • Ignoring documentation. Remote ops teams judge you by your written notes.
  • "Marketing operations" jobs that are really sales. If the job is cold messaging for commission only, it isn't marketing ops.
  • Paying to be hired. No real employer charges for training, a "software licence" or onboarding. See how to spot remote job scams in Nigeria.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a marketing operations job with no experience?

Rarely as a first job. Most remote marketing ops ads expect hands-on time with a CRM or automation platform. The realistic route is a year in email marketing, CRM support or marketing coordination, then a move into ops with a portfolio of systems you built.

Do I need a degree for remote marketing operations?

Not always. Many ads focus on tool experience and results, but some employers still list a degree, especially for manager roles. A strong portfolio and platform certificates can make up for a missing degree at specialist level.

Is HubSpot or Salesforce better to learn first?

HubSpot is usually the better first platform. It's easier to start learning, free to begin, and common in remote ads at small and mid-sized companies. Add Salesforce CRM basics next, because many companies run HubSpot for marketing and Salesforce for sales.

Are marketing operations jobs open to Nigerians?

Some are. As of October 2026, for example, GiveDirectly's senior marketing strategy and operations ad lists Nigeria among its hiring countries. Many other ads are limited to the US, UK or EU, so check the location line on every ad.

How much does a marketing operations manager earn remotely?

It varies a lot by employer and location. One October 2026 ad lists $120,750 a year in the US and $83,820 in Kenya for a senior role. Nigeria-based pay is often set by location and is usually below US local pay, so ask for the range for your country early in the process.

What is the difference between marketing operations and revenue operations?

Marketing operations runs the marketing team's systems and data. Revenue operations covers marketing, sales and customer success systems together. Many people move from marketing ops to RevOps as their careers progress.

Will I be hired as an employee or a contractor?

Most Nigeria-based hires are contractors or are employed through an employer of record. The contract type affects benefits, notice periods and tax, so confirm it before accepting.

Key takeaways

  • Marketing operations is the systems side of marketing: CRM, automation, data, tracking and reporting.
  • It's a mid-level role. Most people come in from email, CRM, sales ops or analytics work.
  • Learn one automation platform deeply (HubSpot is the cheapest to start with), then CRM logic, spreadsheets and GA4.
  • A short portfolio of documented builds beats a list of certificates.
  • Check location eligibility before applying. "Remote" often means US-only or EU-only.
  • Pay is often set by location. Ask what range applies to applicants in Nigeria.
