Remote marketing analyst jobs usually need strong SQL and spreadsheet skills, hands-on work with Google Analytics 4 and a dashboard tool, and proof that you can turn campaign data into a decision. Most of these employers care more about what your portfolio shows than about your degree title, but many also want two to three years of analysis or reporting experience.

That is the honest bar. The good news is that you can see the entire tool stack before you apply, and most of it can be learnt cheaply from Nigeria. This guide explains what a marketing analyst does in a remote team and which qualifications act as real filters. It covers the tools employers name in ads, how to read eligibility and time-zone lines, what pay looks like for Africa-based contractors, and a practical plan to get job-ready. It uses a current job ad open to Nigeria as a reference point, with dates, so you can judge what "qualified" means today.

Quick answer

To get a remote marketing analyst job, you typically need solid SQL, advanced Excel or Google Sheets, Google Analytics 4 and one BI tool (Tableau, Power BI, Looker Studio or similar). You also need to understand funnels and campaign metrics, and be able to explain findings clearly in writing. A degree helps but is rarely the deciding factor. Check every ad for country eligibility and required working hours before applying.

What a remote marketing analyst actually does

A marketing analyst measures whether a company's marketing is working and recommends what to change. In practice, that means pulling data from ad platforms, the website and the CRM, then cleaning it. After that comes building dashboards, explaining why a number moved, and telling the marketing team where to spend the next dollar.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics groups this work under market research analysts. It describes the job as gathering data on customers and competitors, analysing it with statistical software, forecasting trends, measuring how well marketing efforts work and presenting findings through charts and written reports.

In remote tech and e-commerce companies, the role leans heavily towards digital performance data. A typical week might include:

  • Investigating why sign-ups from paid search dropped 20% last Tuesday
  • Updating the weekly funnel dashboard (visits, leads, qualified leads, customers)
  • Writing SQL to compare customers acquired through two campaigns
  • Answering an urgent question from the head of growth in Slack, in writing, with a chart
  • Checking that a new landing page is tracking conversions correctly

Marketing analyst vs data analyst vs market research analyst

These titles overlap, and companies use them loosely. The difference is mostly about the data you touch and who you answer to.

TitleMain dataUsually reports to

If you're coming from general analysis, our data analyst career guide covers that path. If surveys and consumer research interest you more, see the market research analyst guide.

Qualifications employers ask for

Qualifications in marketing analyst ads fall into two groups: the ones that filter you out and the ones that are nice to have. Mixing them up wastes applications.

Education

Many US employers list a bachelor's degree. The BLS says market research analysts typically need one, often in market research, business, communications or a social science, and that some employers prefer a master's (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook).

Remote employers hiring internationally tend to read this loosely. The ad we review below doesn't list a degree at all. It lists years of experience and specific tools instead. A Nigerian BSc or HND in economics, statistics, marketing, mathematics, computer science or business is a reasonable fit. A degree in an unrelated field can still work if your portfolio carries the weight.

Experience

This is the real filter. Remote marketing analyst roles open to applicants abroad are often mid-level, because a company hiring across borders wants someone who can work without close supervision. The Scale Army ad (reviewed below) asks for three or more years in data analysis, business analysis or reporting.

Entry-level remote roles do exist, but they are fewer and more competitive. If you have no experience yet, plan to build it first. Practical routes are a local analyst role, a freelance reporting gig or an in-house marketing job where you own the numbers. See how to build experience before applying for remote jobs.

Skills that count as qualifications

For this role, demonstrable skills often matter more than certificates:

  • SQL good enough to join tables, filter, aggregate and write window functions without help
  • Spreadsheets: pivot tables, lookups (XLOOKUP or INDEX/MATCH), clean charts
  • Marketing metrics: CAC (customer acquisition cost), ROAS (return on ad spend), conversion rate, CTR (click-through rate), MQL (marketing-qualified lead), retention and LTV (lifetime value)
  • Analytics setup: how events, UTM parameters and conversion tracking work, and how they break
  • Written communication: a five-line Slack summary a busy manager can act on
  • Basic statistics: averages vs medians, significance in A/B tests, why a small sample misleads

Certifications worth having

None of these is compulsory, but they help a CV pass a first screen and give you structured practice.

CertificateProviderCost (as of October 2026)
Google Analytics training and certificationGoogle, on SkillshopCourses free; check Skillshop for the exam
Google Data Analytics Professional CertificateGoogle, on Coursera$49 a month in the US and Canada; financial aid available
Tableau or Power BI vendor certificatesTableau, MicrosoftVaries; check the vendor's site

Google says its Analytics Academy courses on Skillshop are free e-learning courses and lists a Google Analytics certification alongside them. The Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate has nine beginner courses, about six months at 10 hours a week. It covers spreadsheets, SQL, Tableau and Python, and ends with a capstone case study. Coursera says most learners finish for under $300, that prices may be lower outside the US and that financial aid is available.

The tools in a remote marketing analyst's stack

Employers name tools in ads because they want you productive in week one. You don't need all of them. You need one solid tool from each layer, plus the ability to pick up an equivalent quickly.

LayerCommon toolsWhat you use it for
Web analyticsGoogle Analytics 4, Mixpanel, AmplitudeTraffic, events, conversions
Tag managementGoogle Tag ManagerSetting up and fixing tracking
QuerySQL on BigQuery, Snowflake, PostgresPulling and joining raw data
SpreadsheetsExcel, Google SheetsQuick analysis, ad hoc reports
BI and dashboardsLooker Studio, Tableau, Power BI, SigmaRecurring reports for the team
CRM and automationSalesforce, HubSpot, MarketoLeads, pipeline, email results
Ad platformsGoogle Ads, Meta Ads Manager, LinkedIn AdsSpend, clicks, cost per result
Scripting (optional)Python or RCleaning, modelling, automation

Where to start if you can only learn three tools

Learn SQL, Google Analytics 4 and one BI tool, in that order.

SQL appears again and again in marketing analyst ads and transfers across every data warehouse. GA4 is free to practise on: Google offers a demo account through its Analytics help centre, and you can install GA4 on your own small website. For the BI tool, Looker Studio is free and connects directly to GA4 and Google Sheets. If the ads you want name Tableau or Power BI, switch to that one. Our planned guides on Power BI developer jobs and Tableau developer jobs go deeper on each.

AI tools are starting to appear in ads

Some ads now list AI assistants as a plus. The Scale Army marketing analyst ad mentions experience with Claude and Claude Code as a bonus. Treat this as a growing expectation, not a requirement: employers want analysts who use AI to draft SQL or summarise results and then check the output, not analysts who paste unverified answers into a report.

A real ad, read line by line

Reading one current ad shows the bar better than any general list. The listing below was checked on 27 October 2026 through Remote Rocketship's copy of the Scale Army Marketing Analyst ad, which links to the employer's application page on Ashby. Ads close and change, so treat this as an example and check the live ad before acting.

9am to 5pm ESTAfternoon to late-night shift in Lagos
CV in English, PDFSmall instruction that screens out careless applicants

At the house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), that range works out to roughly ₦1.77 million to ₦2.59 million a month before fees and tax.

Two lines deserve a closer look.

The hours. "9am to 5pm EST" means 3pm to 11pm in Lagos while the US is on Eastern Standard Time (from 1 November 2026). When the US moves to daylight time, a company working New York hours would mean 2pm to 10pm in Lagos. Be sure you can keep that schedule for months, with power backup that lasts until 11pm.

The contract status. A contractor invoices the company, handles their own tax and gets no paid leave unless the contract says so. Read contractor or employee when a foreign company hires you before you accept an offer.

Aggregator pages also showed marketing and data analyst roles at other companies marked "Anywhere in the World". We couldn't open those employers' own ads to confirm the details, so we haven't named them here.

How much remote marketing analysts earn

Pay depends heavily on where the employer pegs your salary. There is a large gap between US local pay and what Africa-based contractors are usually offered.

As a benchmark, the BLS reports a median of $78,760 a year ($37.87 an hour) for US market research analysts as of May 2025 (BLS). That is roughly $6,560 a month. It is US local pay for people working in the US. It is not what a Nigeria-based contractor should expect.

The Scale Army ad above, open to Nigeria, offers $1,300 to $1,900 a month for a mid-level contract role. That gives a realistic picture of how a company hiring from Africa and Latin America prices this work. Senior analysts, analysts with deep tracking or warehouse skills, and those hired by companies that pay one global band can earn well above that. Those roles are rarer and far more competitive.

What moves your rate up:

  • SQL and data-modelling depth (dbt, BigQuery, Snowflake)
  • Owning attribution or experiment design rather than just reporting
  • B2B SaaS funnel experience with Salesforce or HubSpot data
  • A portfolio that shows business impact, such as "found wasted spend of X"
  • Willingness to cover US hours

For how general data analyst pay compares, see our data analyst salary guide. For converting and withdrawing dollars, see how to receive dollar payments in Nigeria. For tax on that income, see tax for remote workers in Nigeria.

Checking whether a role is open to you in Nigeria

Not every "remote" marketing analyst ad is open to applicants in Nigeria. Read the location line before anything else.

  • "Remote, US" or "Remote, UK" usually means you must live there and be legally allowed to work there. Skip these.
  • "Remote, EMEA" covers Europe, the Middle East and Africa, but some companies only hire in countries where they have a legal entity. Check the country list or ask.
  • A named country list that includes Nigeria, like the Scale Army ad, is the clearest signal.
  • "Anywhere in the World" is promising, but read the hours requirement. Some worldwide roles still expect US overlap.
  • Aggregator copies (sites that re-post ads) can be out of date. Always click through to the employer's own careers page or applicant tracking system (Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Workable) before applying.

The live WorkRemote listings at remote business and marketing jobs show where applicants may live on each ad. WorkRemote reviews listings and aims to publish genuine remote roles open to applicants from Nigeria, but can't check every detail, and employers decide who they hire.

A six-month plan to become job-ready

This plan assumes you know basic Excel and can give about 10 hours a week. Adjust it to your starting point.

  1. Month 1: SQL foundations. Learn SELECT, JOIN, GROUP BY, CASE and date functions. Practise on a free public marketing or e-commerce dataset in BigQuery's sandbox.
  2. Month 2: GA4 and tracking. Complete Google's free Analytics courses on Skillshop. Put GA4 and Google Tag Manager on a simple personal site or blog and set up two conversion events and UTM-tagged links.
  3. Month 3: One BI tool. Build a funnel dashboard in Looker Studio, Tableau or Power BI from your GA4 data or a public dataset. Make it readable on a phone screen.
  4. Month 4: Marketing logic. Learn CAC, ROAS, LTV, cohort retention and basic A/B test reading. Write a one-page analysis explaining a change in a metric, as if for a manager.
  5. Month 5: Portfolio. Publish three case studies (see below) on a simple site or a well-organised GitHub or Notion page.
  6. Month 6: Apply and practise. Apply to roles whose stack you match about 70% or better. Practise SQL tests under time pressure and rehearse explaining your dashboards aloud.

If you have no analysis experience at all, combine this with real work. Offer to own reporting for your current employer's marketing, or take a small freelance reporting project, so the "years of experience" line has something behind it.

Portfolio projects that impress marketing teams

Example (hypothetical): You take a public e-commerce dataset and build a dashboard showing revenue by acquisition channel. You find that one channel brings many first orders but few repeat buyers. You write five sentences recommending a budget shift and state the uncertainty in your data. That single project shows SQL, BI, marketing metrics and communication.

Other strong projects:

  • A tracking audit of a small Nigerian business website (with permission), listing broken events and fixes
  • An A/B test write-up using a public dataset, explaining whether the result is reliable
  • A cohort retention analysis showing how customers acquired in different months behave over time

Our planned guide to building a portfolio for remote data science jobs covers presentation in more depth.

Working the role from Nigeria

Power and internet

Marketing analysts join live calls and often run reports to deadlines in US or UK afternoons. That means your evening hours in Lagos, when grid supply is often weakest. Budget for an inverter or solar setup that can carry a laptop and router through a full shift. Keep two internet options, such as a fixed provider plus a MiFi or phone hotspot on a different network.

Time zones

Lagos is on WAT (UTC+1) all year. UK teams are one hour behind Lagos in winter and on the same time in summer, so European marketing teams are the easiest overlap. US Eastern teams are five or six hours behind, which pushes core hours into your evening.

Data access and security

You will be handling customer data from foreign companies. Expect to use company-issued logins, two-factor authentication and sometimes a VPN. Never move client data onto personal drives, and say in interviews that you understand this. Employers hiring across borders worry about it.

Getting paid

Contract roles usually pay through a platform such as Deel or Remote, or by direct transfer. Check fees and withdrawal options before you sign. The guide to receiving dollars in Nigeria compares the common options.

Common mistakes and red flags

  • Listing tools you can't use under test. Many marketing analyst interviews include a timed SQL or spreadsheet task. If your CV says "advanced SQL", be ready to write a window function live.
  • Showing dashboards without a conclusion. A pretty chart with no recommendation reads as junior. Every portfolio piece should end with a decision.
  • Ignoring the hours line. Accepting a US-hours role you can't sustain leads to burnout and a short contract.
  • Applying to "Remote, US" roles. These usually need US residence or work authorisation, and recruiters will not sponsor you to work from Lagos.
  • Paying for "placement". A real employer never charges you to apply, to be interviewed or for "training materials". See how to spot remote job scams in Nigeria.

For the take-home tests these roles often use, see how to complete a remote marketing assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Can I become a remote marketing analyst without a degree in Nigeria?

Yes, but it is harder. Some employers list a bachelor's degree, while many remote ads focus on years of experience and named tools instead. A strong portfolio with SQL, GA4 and dashboard work, plus some real reporting experience, can make up for a missing or unrelated degree.

What is the most important tool for a marketing analyst?

SQL is the most transferable skill, because marketing data lives in databases and warehouses. Google Analytics 4 and one BI tool come next. Spreadsheets are assumed.

Are remote marketing analyst jobs open to Nigerians?

Some are. As of October 2026, we found a current contract marketing analyst ad that named Nigeria among its eligible countries. Many other remote ads are restricted to the US, UK or specific EU countries. Always check the location line and the employer's own careers page before applying.

How much does a remote marketing analyst earn from Nigeria?

It varies widely. One mid-level contract role open to Nigeria offered $1,300 to $1,900 a month as of October 2026, about ₦1.77 million to ₦2.59 million at ₦1,362 to $1. The US median for market research analysts is $78,760 a year (BLS, May 2025), but that is a US benchmark and not what most Nigeria-based contractors are offered.

Do I need the Google Analytics certification?

No, but it helps you pass CV screens and gives structured GA4 practice. Google's Analytics courses on Skillshop are free. Employers care more about whether you can set up tracking and explain the numbers.

Is a marketing analyst the same as a digital marketer?

No. A digital marketer runs campaigns. A marketing analyst measures them and recommends changes. Many analysts start as digital marketers who became the "numbers person" on their team. The digital marketing specialist guide covers the campaign side.

Can I do this job part-time or freelance?

Yes, on a smaller scale. Small businesses and agencies hire freelancers for tracking set-up, monthly reporting and dashboard builds. Full analyst roles at larger companies are usually full-time contracts.

How long does it take to become job-ready?

For someone with basic Excel, about six months of steady part-time study can cover SQL, GA4, one BI tool and a portfolio. Meeting the "years of experience" line in mid-level ads takes longer, so pair study with real reporting work.

Key takeaways

  • Remote marketing analyst roles centre on SQL, spreadsheets, Google Analytics 4 and one BI tool, applied to campaign and funnel data.
  • Experience and a portfolio usually matter more than the degree title. Many roles open internationally are mid-level.
  • At least one current contract ad, checked in October 2026, is open to Nigeria at $1,300 to $1,900 a month. US medians are benchmarks only.
  • Read every ad's location line and hours before applying. "Remote, US" usually rules you out.
  • Plan for evening hours, power backup and secure data handling if you work with US teams.
