Authentic small youthful marketing agency

Remote marketing automation jobs are open to Nigerians, and some international employers hire for them from Nigeria. These roles pay well because they sit between marketing and data: you build the emails, lead scoring, CRM syncs and customer journeys that run without someone pressing "send" every morning. The catch is that they are rarely entry-level. Employers want proof that you can run HubSpot, Marketo or Salesforce Marketing Cloud, and many ads limit applicants to particular regions.

This guide explains what the work involves, which job titles and platforms come up in real ads, how to read the location rules, what the pay benchmarks look like, which certificates are worth paying for, and a practical plan for building proof of skill from Nigeria. We checked live ads in October 2026 to show how eligibility works in practice.

Quick answer

Remote marketing automation jobs involve building and maintaining automated email, CRM and lifecycle campaigns on platforms such as HubSpot, Marketo Engage, Salesforce Marketing Cloud or Iterable. Nigerians can get them when an ad is open to Nigeria, Africa, EMEA or worldwide. Most roles want one or two years of hands-on platform experience plus basic HTML, SQL or scripting. Applicants usually show that through a certificate and a documented portfolio project.

What a marketing automation specialist actually does

Think of a marketing automation specialist as the person who builds the machine that marketers use. A content writer writes the welcome email. The automation specialist decides who gets it, when, what happens if they click, and how that person's record changes in the CRM afterwards.

Day to day, the work usually includes:

  • Building workflows and journeys, such as a five-email onboarding sequence that changes path depending on what a user does.
  • Setting up lead scoring, where actions like visiting the pricing page or opening three emails add points until sales gets alerted.
  • Segmenting contact lists using filters or SQL queries.
  • Coding and testing email templates in HTML and CSS so they display properly in Gmail, Outlook and on phones.
  • Connecting the marketing platform to the CRM and other tools through native integrations, APIs and webhooks.
  • Keeping data clean: deduplicating contacts, fixing field mappings, managing consent and unsubscribes.
  • Running A/B tests and reporting on open, click and conversion rates.

You can see this mix in real ads. A Lifecycle Marketing Automation Specialist contract at PadSplit (checked October 2026) lists multi-channel journeys across email, SMS, push and in-app messaging, lead scoring, segment syncs, HTML/CSS troubleshooting and A/B tests (PadSplit job ad on Lever).

Example (hypothetical): one week in the role

Monday, you fix a broken form that stopped passing new leads to Salesforce over the weekend. Tuesday and Wednesday, you build a re-engagement journey for customers who haven't logged in for 30 days. Thursday, you test the new email template in a rendering tool and catch a button that breaks in Outlook. Friday, you send the marketing lead a short report: the trial nurture series raised trial-to-paid conversion slightly, but one email has a high unsubscribe rate and needs rewriting.

Not much of that is creative writing. Most of it is logic, testing and checking data. If you enjoy spreadsheets and working out why something broke, you'll probably like the job.

Job titles you will see in remote ads

Ads for this work use different titles, and the title doesn't always tell you how senior or technical the role is. Read the responsibilities before you decide whether it fits.

Title in the adWhat it usually means
Marketing Automation SpecialistBuilds and runs campaigns on one main platform
Email Marketing SpecialistOverlaps heavily; often more copy and design
Lifecycle Marketing SpecialistJourneys across email, SMS, push and in-app
CRM Marketing ManagerOwns customer data and retention campaigns
Marketing Automation ManagerOwns the platform, strategy and other users
Marketing Operations ManagerWider: whole martech stack, process, reporting
HubSpot or Marketo AdministratorPlatform setup, permissions, data, integrations

Marketing operations is the broader role. If you'd rather own the whole marketing tech stack than build the campaigns, our guide on how to get a remote marketing operations job covers that path. RevOps (revenue operations) roles bring sales and customer success systems into the same picture; see remote revenue operations jobs.

The platforms employers ask for

Most employers hire for a specific platform. An ad that says "Marketo required" usually means it, because the company doesn't want to train you on a tool it pays heavily for.

PlatformWhere you usually see itHow to start learning
HubSpot Marketing HubSmall and mid-size B2B companies, agenciesFree HubSpot Academy courses, free CRM
Adobe Marketo EngageLarger B2B and tech firmsHard without employer access
Salesforce Marketing CloudEnterprise B2C, retail, financeFree Trailhead modules
Salesforce Account Engagement (Pardot)B2B teams already on Salesforce CRMTrailhead modules
Iterable, Braze, Customer.ioConsumer apps and startupsDocs and free trials
KlaviyoE-commerce, Shopify storesFree account for small lists
Zapier, Make, n8nConnecting tools, light automationFree tiers

For a beginner in Nigeria, HubSpot is the easiest place to start. You can learn it without employer access, and plenty of small companies and agencies abroad use it. Marketo and Salesforce Marketing Cloud jobs often pay more, but you usually get real access to those platforms only through a job or an agency.

Recent ads also ask for experience with AI tools and workflow automation tools like n8n. That overlaps with remote AI automation jobs, which is a separate career track if you're more interested in automating operations than marketing.

Technical skills that separate candidates

Knowing a platform's buttons isn't enough to get you shortlisted. The candidates who get interviews can also show some technical depth. Canonical's Senior Marketing Automation Manager ad (remote in EMEA, checked October 2026) asks for advanced skill in Marketo, HubSpot or Salesforce Marketing Cloud, plus at least two of Python, JavaScript, SQL or Velocity, and experience building integrations between CRM systems and other platforms (Canonical job ad on Greenhouse).

The PadSplit ad goes further down the stack: SQL, REST APIs, JSON payloads, webhooks, Liquid or AMPscript, and HTML/CSS for email templates.

Here's a sensible order to learn them in:

  1. HTML and CSS for email. Email HTML is old-fashioned (tables, inline styles), and many marketers never learn it. Being able to fix a broken template quickly makes you useful from your first week.
  2. SQL basics. Writing SELECT queries with WHERE, JOIN and GROUP BY is enough for most segmentation work.
  3. Personalisation languages. Liquid (Iterable, Braze, Klaviyo, Shopify), AMPscript (Salesforce Marketing Cloud) or Velocity (Marketo). Learn the one your target platform uses.
  4. APIs and webhooks. Understand what a POST request with a JSON body does. Zapier or n8n is a gentle way to practise.
  5. Deliverability. SPF, DKIM and DMARC records, warming up a sending domain, and why buying email lists damages a sender's reputation.
  6. Data protection. GDPR consent rules matter for UK and European employers, and CAN-SPAM unsubscribe rules matter for US ones. You don't need to be a lawyer, but you should know why the consent field exists.

Can you get these jobs from Nigeria? Reading the location rules

Yes, you can, but only for roles whose location rules include you. A job advertised as "remote" might mean remote within the US only, remote within one region, or remote anywhere. Look for the exact words in the location line and in the body of the ad.

Here is how three real ads we checked on 27 October 2026 handled it:

AdLocation ruleOpen to Nigeria?
Canonical, Senior Marketing Automation ManagerRemote in the EMEA regionYes, Nigeria is in EMEA
Growth Marketing & Automation Manager (listed on Remote4Africa)Named countries incl. NigeriaYes
PadSplit, Lifecycle Marketing Automation SpecialistRemote, South AmericaNo

The Remote4Africa listing is for an unnamed "Human Resource Services Company" supporting US clients. It names Egypt, Ethiopia, Nigeria and South Africa (plus Argentina) as eligible, lists HubSpot, CRM and Google Ads among the skills, and requires availability during US business hours (Remote4Africa listing). The site's HubSpot skill page also showed a HubSpot RevOps Administrator role with the same country list and a lifecycle marketing lead role marked worldwide. When the employer's name is hidden behind a membership wall, find out who the company is and check its own website before you share personal documents.

Two more details from the Canonical ad matter for Nigerian applicants. EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) covers Nigeria, so you are eligible to apply. The ad also says staff meet in person two to four times a year for events of one to two weeks, which may mean international travel. With a Nigerian passport, that usually means applying for visas, so ask about visa support at the interview stage.

Ads change and close often. These examples show how location rules work, not a list of current openings. Always read the live ad. For a step-by-step method, see how to verify whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents.

What remote marketing automation jobs pay

No reliable published survey covers pay for Nigeria-based marketing automation specialists, so be wary of any page that quotes a single "average". Here is what we could confirm, with the limits stated.

BenchmarkFigureWhat it is
US marketing managers$166,790 a yearBLS median, May 2025, US-based staff
US market research analysts and marketing specialists$78,760 a yearBLS median, May 2025, US-based staff
PadSplit contract (South America only)$25,000 to $30,000 a yearRange published in the ad, October 2026

Sources: BLS Occupational Outlook, marketing managers and BLS Occupational Outlook, market research analysts and marketing specialists. The US government doesn't track marketing automation as a separate occupation, so these two groups are the closest benchmarks.

The BLS figures describe people living and working in the US. A Nigeria-based worker is very unlikely to be offered US local pay. Many companies set pay by location, and Canonical's ad says base pay depends on location, experience and skills.

The PadSplit band is more realistic for offshore contract work. It isn't open to Nigerians, but it shows what an employer was willing to publish for a contractor outside the US. $25,000 to $30,000 a year is about $2,080 to $2,500 a month, or roughly ₦2.8 million to ₦3.4 million a month at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026). Contractors pay their own tax and receive no benefits, so take that into account when you compare it with a salaried job.

What moves your rate up:

  • Marketo or Salesforce Marketing Cloud experience, compared with HubSpot only.
  • SQL and API work, compared with drag-and-drop only.
  • Measurable results in your portfolio, such as revenue or conversion changes.
  • A full-time employee contract through an employer of record (EOR) rather than freelance hours.

Certifications: what they cost and which are worth it

A certificate won't get you hired by itself. It does get you past keyword filters in applicant tracking systems, and it gives you a structured syllabus to follow. Fees below were checked in October 2026.

CertificateCostBest for
HubSpot Academy marketing coursesFree to takeFirst step; agency and SME roles
Adobe Marketo Engage Business Practitioner Expert (AD0-E559)$225B2B and tech employers using Marketo
Salesforce Certified Marketing Cloud Engagement SpecialistCheck TrailheadEnterprise and B2C email roles

HubSpot Academy offers free courses, including its Marketing Hub Software course. Some HubSpot software certifications include practical exercises that need access to paid features, so check the requirements on the course page before you begin.

Adobe's Marketo Engage Business Practitioner Expert page lists the AD0-E559 exam at $225 (with a lower price in India), lasting 1 hour 40 minutes, online proctored with a camera. It also says an updated exam, AD0-E562, is now available. Without Marketo access, passing is hard, so this certificate makes more sense once you've used the platform at work.

Salesforce has renamed its Marketing Cloud email certificate. The Trailhead credential page now calls it the Salesforce Certified Marketing Cloud Engagement Specialist. Check the current exam fee there before you budget. Salesforce exams are priced in dollars, so you'll need a card that can pay in dollars.

Our order of priority: HubSpot first because it's free, then the certificate for whichever platform appears most often in the ads you're targeting. For a wider comparison, see digital marketing certifications for remote jobs.

How to break in: a 90-day plan from Nigeria

Most people move into marketing automation from email marketing, digital marketing, CRM administration or customer success. Very few start with no marketing background at all. If that's you, start with general email marketing first; the email marketing specialist career guide sets out that route.

If you already do some marketing, this plan builds the evidence that employers ask for:

  1. Weeks 1 to 3: learn one platform properly. Create a free HubSpot account and work through HubSpot Academy's marketing courses. Set up properties, lists, forms and a simple workflow in your own account.
  2. Weeks 4 to 6: build a realistic project. Invent a business (clearly labelled as a demo) and build a lead capture form, a lead scoring model, a branching nurture sequence and a re-engagement flow.
  3. Weeks 7 to 8: add technical depth. Hand-code one responsive email template in HTML. Write SQL queries against a free sample dataset to build three segments. Connect two tools with Zapier or n8n using a webhook.
  4. Weeks 9 to 10: document it. Write a short case study with screenshots, a workflow diagram and what you would measure. Put it on a simple portfolio page or a public Notion page.
  5. Weeks 11 to 12: get real data. Offer to fix the email setup of a small business, a church, an alumni association or a Nigerian SME for free or a small fee. Real numbers, even small ones, are worth more than a perfect demo.
  6. Ongoing: apply where you fit. Target ads open to Nigeria, EMEA or worldwide, and agencies that serve US or UK clients. Agencies often train generalists on several platforms.

For more ideas on building samples without paid work, see how to build a digital marketing portfolio without clients. Many employers also set a practical task; our guide on completing a remote marketing assessment explains what these usually look like.

Example (hypothetical): a case study outline that works

Title: "Trial-to-paid nurture for a demo SaaS product (HubSpot)."

  • The problem: trial users drop off after day 3.
  • What you built: a seven-email workflow branching on whether the user completed setup, plus a lead score that alerts sales at 50 points.
  • The technical part: a custom HTML template, a SQL segment of inactive users and a webhook that posts high-score leads to a Slack channel.
  • What you'd measure: activation rate, trial-to-paid conversion and unsubscribe rate per email.
  • What you'd change next: test send times for US Eastern versus UK audiences.

A hiring manager can read that in two minutes and see how you think.

Working from Nigeria: hours, power and getting paid

Time zones. US-facing roles usually want you online for at least part of US business hours. Nigeria is on WAT (UTC+1) all year. From 1 November 2026, when New York goes on EST, 9am to 5pm Eastern is 3pm to 11pm in Lagos. In summer (EDT) it is 2pm to 10pm. UK roles are easier: 9am to 5pm London is 10am to 6pm in Lagos in winter and the same time in summer. Canonical-style EMEA roles normally follow European hours.

Power and internet. Automation work involves long sessions in browser-based platforms and live checks when campaigns go out. A failed launch because NEPA took the light is hard to explain to a manager in Chicago. Budget for an inverter or solar backup and two internet connections, for example a fixed line or Starlink plus a MiFi or phone hotspot.

Contracts and pay. Many offers come either as contractor agreements or as full-time employment through an EOR such as Deel or Remote. Our guide to contractor versus EOR employee arrangements explains the difference in benefits and security. For receiving dollars, compare options in how to receive dollar payments in Nigeria. Earnings from foreign clients are still taxable in Nigeria; see tax for remote workers in Nigeria.

Data access. You will have access to customer lists from the UK, Europe or the US. Expect to sign data-processing terms, use two-factor authentication and work on a password-protected laptop that only you use.

Career path: where marketing automation leads

The usual path goes from specialist to manager or senior specialist, then splits:

  • Marketing operations manager: owns the whole martech stack, budgets and reporting.
  • Lifecycle or CRM marketing lead: owns retention strategy, not only the tools.
  • RevOps: joins up marketing, sales and customer success systems.
  • Consultant or agency owner: implements HubSpot or Marketo for several clients. Certified consultants who can do migrations are in steady demand.
  • Technical track: marketing engineer or martech developer, building integrations and custom code.

Each step means less time building campaigns and more time owning results. People who can tie their workflows to revenue tend to progress faster than people who only report open rates.

Common mistakes and red flags

  • Applying to US-only roles. If the ad says "must reside in the US" or requires US work authorisation, it isn't open to you, however remote it looks.
  • Listing tools you've only watched videos about. Interviewers ask you to share your screen and build something. Only list platforms you can actually use.
  • Skipping HTML. Many shortlists come down to whether you can fix a broken template.
  • Treating automation as spam. Anyone who asks you to send bulk email to bought or scraped lists from your own accounts is putting your name and domain at risk. Legitimate employers send from their own platforms.
  • Paying to be hired. No real employer charges you for "platform access", training materials or equipment before an offer. Read how to spot remote job scams in Nigeria before you share your NIN, BVN or passport.
  • Ignoring hours in the ad. A US-hours role means late evenings in Lagos all year. Decide if you can keep that up before you accept.

Frequently asked questions

Can Nigerians get remote marketing automation jobs?

Yes, when the ad is open to Nigeria, Africa, EMEA or worldwide. In October 2026 we found live examples, including an EMEA-remote Canonical role and a listing that named Nigeria among eligible countries. Many other ads are restricted to the US or other regions, so check the location line in every ad.

Is marketing automation a good career in Nigeria?

It can be, for people who like logic and data as much as marketing. The skills are specific and tied to particular platforms, so experienced people have fewer competitors than in general digital marketing. On the other hand, entry-level remote roles are rare and you'll need to build proof of skill first.

Do I need to know coding for marketing automation jobs?

Not for every role, but it helps. Junior HubSpot roles can be mostly drag-and-drop. Mid-level and senior ads often ask for HTML/CSS, SQL and sometimes JavaScript, Python, Liquid, AMPscript or Velocity, plus API and webhook experience.

Is HubSpot certification free?

HubSpot Academy courses are free to take. Some software certifications include practical exercises that need access to paid HubSpot features, so check the requirements on the course page before you start.

Which is better to learn first: HubSpot, Marketo or Salesforce Marketing Cloud?

HubSpot, for most Nigerian beginners, because you can practise without employer access. Marketo and Salesforce Marketing Cloud roles often pay more, but they're hard to learn without a job that gives you access. Once you're working, pick the platform that comes up most in the ads you want.

How much does a remote marketing automation specialist earn?

It varies widely by platform, seniority and where the employer is based. US medians from BLS (May 2025) are $78,760 a year for marketing specialists and $166,790 for marketing managers, but those are US local pay. One contractor ad open only to South America published $25,000 to $30,000 a year. Nigeria-based workers should expect offers below US local pay.

What is the difference between marketing automation and marketing operations?

Marketing automation focuses on building and running campaigns and workflows on a platform. Marketing operations is broader: it covers the whole martech stack, processes, budgets and reporting. Many people start in automation and move into operations.

Can I do marketing automation as a freelancer?

Yes. Small businesses and agencies hire freelancers to set up HubSpot, Klaviyo or Mailchimp automations, fix templates or migrate data between platforms. Freelance work is a common way to build the real results that full-time employers want to see.

Key takeaways

  • Marketing automation roles build the systems behind email, CRM and lifecycle campaigns, using platforms such as HubSpot, Marketo Engage and Salesforce Marketing Cloud.
  • Nigerians can apply when an ad is open to Nigeria, Africa, EMEA or worldwide. Check the location line in every ad, because many are region-restricted.
  • Technical skills (email HTML, SQL, APIs, a personalisation language) set candidates apart more than a list of tools.
  • Start with free HubSpot Academy courses. Pay for Marketo ($225) or Salesforce certificates only once the jobs you're targeting ask for them.
  • US pay figures are benchmarks only. Published offshore contract bands are much lower, and Nigeria-based workers should expect less than US local pay.
  • A documented portfolio project with real or realistic numbers is often what gets you interviews.
