How to Use HubSpot for Remote Sales Work

How remote sales reps use HubSpot daily: sequences, calling, deals and logging, free ways to learn it from Nigeria, and how to show it on your CV.

To use HubSpot for remote sales work, you need to run your working day inside it. You log every call and email against the right contact, keep each deal at the correct stage, work your task queue and follow-up sequences, and keep your records clean enough that a manager in London or New York can trust your pipeline without asking you. That is what foreign sales teams mean when a job ad says "HubSpot experience".

This guide is for Nigeria-based sales reps and people moving into remote sales. It covers the HubSpot tools a remote sales development representative (SDR) or account executive uses each day, what the free plan lets you practise and what it doesn't, and how to earn HubSpot's free sales certification. You'll also see how to show the skill on a CV and how to read job ads that list HubSpot alongside location rules. Prices and features are as of October 2026, so check HubSpot's own pages before you rely on them.

Quick answer

Remote sales reps use HubSpot Sales Hub to track contacts, companies and deals, log calls and emails, run follow-up sequences, book meetings and report pipeline. You can learn the basics for free with HubSpot's free CRM and the free Sales Hub Software certification on HubSpot Academy. Sequences and calling need a paid seat, so most people only use those tools in the job itself. A HubSpot requirement in an ad says nothing about whether applicants in Nigeria are eligible, so check the location rules separately.

What HubSpot actually does in a remote sales team

HubSpot is a customer relationship management (CRM) platform. Its sales product is called Sales Hub. In a remote team, the CRM replaces the conversations you would have across the office. If an activity isn't logged in HubSpot, your manager can't see it, the marketing team can't follow up on it and the forecast doesn't count it.

A remote rep works with a handful of record types:

  • Contacts: the people you sell to, with their email, phone, job title and full activity history.
  • Companies: the organisations those contacts work for, so several people at one account sit together.
  • Deals: each potential sale, with a value, a close date and a stage in the pipeline.
  • Tasks: your to-do list (call this person Tuesday, send the proposal Friday), which HubSpot can turn into a queue.
  • Activities: logged calls, emails, meetings and notes, all attached to the right contact, company and deal.

The job is to keep those five things accurate. Sales managers call this "CRM hygiene", and in remote teams it often counts towards your performance review.

Which HubSpot tools each remote sales role uses

The features you rely on depend on your role. This is our summary of how the work usually divides up. It is general guidance, not taken from any single employer.

RoleMain HubSpot toolsWhat your manager checks
SDR or BDRSequences, tasks, calling, contact recordsActivities logged, meetings booked
Appointment setterMeetings links, calling, tasksMeetings booked and shown up
Account executiveDeals, pipeline board, quotes, forecastsDeal stages, close dates, pipeline value
Account managerCompany records, tasks, deal renewalsRenewals and upsell deals updated

If you're new to the SDR role, our guide on how to become a remote sales development representative covers the full career path. This article sticks to the HubSpot side.

A remote rep's working day in HubSpot

Here is a typical day for a Nigeria-based SDR selling to UK companies in winter. UK hours of 9am to 5pm GMT are 10am to 6pm in Lagos. A rep on US East Coast hours from 1 November 2026 works roughly 3pm to 11pm Lagos time.

Start with the task queue

Open your tasks, filter them to "due today" and run them as a queue. HubSpot then takes you from one task to the next, so you aren't hunting through records. Overdue tasks are the first thing a remote manager notices, so clear or reschedule them before lunch.

Prospect with sequences

A sequence is a timed series of emails and task reminders sent to one contact at a time. For example: an email on day 1, a call task on day 3, a LinkedIn task on day 5 and a follow-up email on day 8.

According to HubSpot's knowledge base article on sequences, as of October 2026:

  • Sequences need Sales Hub or Service Hub Professional or Enterprise, plus an assigned Sales or Service seat.
  • A step can be an automated email, a manual email task, a call task, a general task, or a LinkedIn InMail or connection request task (the LinkedIn steps need the Sales Navigator integration).
  • Each sequence can hold up to 10 email templates.
  • By default, a contact is unenrolled when they reply to a sequence email or book a meeting through a meetings link in the sequence.

That last point matters in practice. If a prospect replies "not now, try me in March", the sequence stops. Your job is to log the reply, set a task for March and update the contact's lead status. Reps who skip that step lose leads, and the CRM shows exactly who skipped it.

Make and log calls

HubSpot's built-in calling is available on Sales Hub or Service Hub Starter, Professional or Enterprise, and it needs an assigned seat. HubSpot's calling country guide also says you don't need to be physically in a country to use a HubSpot-provided number from it, although some countries require a local address. For a Lagos-based rep, that usually means calling UK or US prospects from a UK or US number the employer has set up for you.

After each call, choose the outcome (connected, left voicemail, no answer), write two or three lines of notes and set the next task. On a remote team, a call with no notes is treated almost as if it never happened.

Keep records clean

Job ads spell out how much this counts. A Sales Development Representative ad from the lead generation agency Belkins, which we opened on Lever in October 2026, lists HubSpot as the CRM for SDR reporting and CRM hygiene, including a weekly recap for the account strategist. Good hygiene in HubSpot means:

  • one contact per person, with duplicates merged
  • every contact linked to the correct company
  • the lead status updated after each meaningful touch
  • no deal left with a close date in the past

Move deals through the pipeline

Account executives spend most of their time on the deals board. HubSpot's pipeline setup article lists the default deal stages and the probability attached to each:

Default deal stageProbability
Appointment scheduled20%
Qualified to buy40%
Presentation scheduled60%
Decision maker bought-in80%
Contract sent90%
Closed won100%
Closed lost0%

HubSpot multiplies each deal's value by its stage probability to show a weighted amount on the board. A $10,000 deal at "Presentation scheduled" counts as $6,000 in a weighted forecast. Most companies rename these stages to fit their own sales process, so learn your employer's definitions in your first week. Running a pipeline well is a skill of its own; our planned guide on managing a remote sales pipeline covers it.

Report to a manager in another time zone

Your manager may be asleep when you finish. Before you log off, check that today's activities are logged and that your deals have their next step and close date set. If your team uses a shared dashboard, look at it quickly before you send any end-of-day update. Remote managers trust a rep whose dashboard matches what the rep tells them.

How to learn HubSpot for free from Nigeria

You can learn most of HubSpot without paying. There are two free routes: the free CRM and HubSpot Academy.

Use the free CRM, and know its limits

HubSpot's Sales Hub pricing page lists a free plan for up to 2 users with no credit card needed, as of October 2026. The free plan includes 1-to-1 email, up to 3 email templates and 3 canned snippets, one personal meetings link with HubSpot branding, and basic reporting dashboards.

What the free plan doesn't give you matters just as much:

FeatureFree toolsWhere it starts
Contacts, companies, dealsYesFree
Custom deal pipelinesNo (default pipeline only)Starter
Built-in callingNoStarter
SequencesNoProfessional

On the same page, as of October 2026, Starter is listed at $7 or $20 a seat a month and Professional at $90 or $100 a seat a month, plus a one-time $1,500 onboarding fee. The lower figures appear to be for annual billing. Your employer pays for these seats, so you don't need to buy one to get hired. The free plan teaches you records, deals and logging, and you'll learn sequences and calling in training.

Take the free Sales Hub certification

The HubSpot Sales Hub Software course on HubSpot Academy is listed as a free certification course, as of October 2026. It runs to about 1 hour 44 minutes across 6 lessons, with 20 videos, 4 quizzes and 5 practical exercises, and ends with a multiple-choice exam. It covers finding good-fit leads, connecting with customers, closing deals in HubSpot, and sales reporting. The course page says it is aimed at Sales Hub Professional and Enterprise users, so it shows you features the free plan doesn't have. That is useful, because it explains sequences before you've had the chance to use them.

To save data, download the lesson videos over Wi-Fi where the platform allows it, or watch at a lower resolution. It takes about two evenings.

Example (hypothetical): a one-week practice project

Pick 20 real companies in one niche, such as UK recruitment agencies. Add them as companies in your free HubSpot account, add one decision-maker from each as a contact using public information only, and create a deal for each at "Appointment scheduled". Write three email templates (first touch, follow-up, break-up) and log a fake call note on five contacts.

At the end, take screenshots of your deals board and one contact timeline. Blur any personal data before you share them. You now have something concrete to show in an interview. Don't send real cold emails to these contacts unless you understand the data protection and anti-spam rules where they live.

How to show HubSpot skills on your CV and in interviews

"Proficient in HubSpot" on its own tells a recruiter nothing. Write down what you did inside the tool, with numbers you can defend.

Example (hypothetical) CV bullets:

  • "Ran 4 HubSpot sequences for UK SaaS prospects, booking meetings for 2 account executives."
  • "Logged all calls and outcomes in HubSpot daily; kept zero overdue tasks for the quarter."
  • "Earned the HubSpot Sales Hub Software certification (October 2026)."

Use your own real figures. Inventing results is dishonest, and it falls apart as soon as an interviewer asks how the sequence was built.

In interviews, expect practical questions such as "Walk me through what you do after a prospect says not now" or "How do you decide when a deal moves to the next stage?" Answer with the actual clicks: log the reply, unenrol, set a task, update the lead status. Our remote SDR interview questions give more examples, and our planned guide to sales role-play assessments covers the live exercises. If you've used Salesforce as well, mention it. Our planned guide on using Salesforce in a remote sales job explains how the two CRMs differ.

Reading HubSpot job ads as a Nigerian applicant

An ad that asks for HubSpot is telling you about the tools. It isn't telling you who can apply. Check the location rules separately every time.

Two ads we opened in October 2026 show why:

  • The Belkins SDR ad on Lever says "Remote" and "EMEA", but the locations it actually names are European, such as Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Serbia and Georgia. Nigeria isn't among them. "EMEA" (Europe, Middle East and Africa) in the heading doesn't mean every African country is included. Our planned guide on what EMEA means in a remote job ad explains this in detail.
  • A Workable ad for a remote SaaS SDR working UK hours is listed as "Remote (South Africa)". The employer works with African talent but limits this role to one country.

Location rules usually fall into four types:

  • Country-locked remote: you must live in one named country, often for payroll or legal reasons.
  • Regional remote: a named list of countries or a time-zone band. Read the list, not the heading.
  • Worldwide contractor: open to most countries, usually paid as a contractor through a platform such as Deel.
  • Freelance projects: short HubSpot clean-up or setup jobs on marketplaces, open to international freelancers.

Before you apply, read the full location section of the ad and the application form's country dropdown. If they disagree, the form is usually the stricter of the two. Our planned guide on checking whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents goes step by step. WorkRemote listings at /jobs show where applicants may live for each role, which saves you some of this checking.

What remote sales jobs using HubSpot pay

HubSpot skill doesn't come with a fixed salary. Pay depends on the role, the market you sell into and the commission plan. As a benchmark, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median of $72,080 a year (about ₦98.2 million at ₦1,362 to $1, the CBN NFEM average on 23 October 2026) for wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives outside technical and scientific products, and $104,920 for technical and scientific products, as of May 2025.

Those are US pay figures for people living in the US. A Nigeria-based rep hired by a foreign company is usually offered less, often a base salary plus commission. For example, the South Africa-only Workable ad above quotes £1,100 a month plus uncapped commission. For pay ranges that apply to remote roles, see our account executive salary guide and SDR salary guide.

If you're paid as a contractor, our guide on contractor versus employee arrangements explains what that changes, and receiving dollar payments in Nigeria covers the payment apps and their fees.

Working in HubSpot reliably from Nigeria

HubSpot runs in the browser and on a mobile app, so the tool itself is easy. Power and internet are the harder part.

  • Power: a dropped call during a demo is far worse than a late email. Keep an inverter or solar backup that can run your laptop, router and headset for a full working session.
  • Internet: keep two connections, such as fibre or Starlink plus a MiFi or phone hotspot, so you can switch mid-call. HubSpot calling carries audio over your data connection.
  • VPNs: use only the VPN your employer gives you. HubSpot's calling guide notes that some countries block calls where a VPN changes your apparent location, and a VPN can also trigger account security checks.
  • Client data: never export HubSpot contact lists to your personal Google Sheets or phone. It breaks most employers' data policies and is a fast way to lose a contract.
  • Scams: a "HubSpot sales job" that asks you to pay for training, software access or a certificate is a scam. The certification is free. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria covers the warning signs.

Common mistakes remote reps make in HubSpot

  • Logging activities at the end of the week. By Friday you've forgotten the details, and your manager has already seen a blank timeline. Log each one as it happens.
  • Letting close dates go stale. A deal with a close date three weeks in the past makes the whole forecast look unreliable.
  • Creating duplicate contacts. Search before you add a contact. Duplicates split the activity history, and two reps can end up emailing the same prospect.
  • Editing sequences without asking. Many teams treat sequence templates as shared assets. Clone one and change your copy instead.
  • Listing HubSpot on your CV without proof. Add the certification, specific bullets and, if you have them, screenshots of a practice project.
  • Only learning the free plan. Watch the Academy lessons on sequences and calling so you can talk about them confidently in interviews, even if you haven't used them yet.

Frequently asked questions

Is the HubSpot Sales Software certification free?

Yes. As of October 2026, HubSpot Academy lists its Sales Hub Software course as a free certification course, and the Academy account is free too. It takes about 1 hour 44 minutes plus a multiple-choice exam.

Can I learn HubSpot sequences on the free plan?

No. As of October 2026, sequences need a Sales Hub or Service Hub Professional or Enterprise seat. You can learn how they work from HubSpot Academy videos, then practise the same logic in the free CRM with templates and manual tasks.

Do remote sales employers expect me to pay for HubSpot?

Not usually. Employers who run their sales on HubSpot assign seats to their reps. A freelancer might pay for their own account if they serve several clients, but an employer that asks you to buy software before you start is a warning sign.

Is HubSpot or Salesforce better for getting remote sales jobs?

Both appear in remote sales ads, often side by side, and many ads accept either. HubSpot is easier to start with for free, so learn it first and add Salesforce basics later. Our planned guide on CRM skills for remote sales compares them.

Can I make HubSpot calls to US prospects from Lagos?

Generally yes, if your employer gives you a calling seat and a HubSpot-provided number. HubSpot says you don't need to be physically in a country to use a number from it, though some countries have their own rules. Your connection quality matters more than the software.

Does "HubSpot experience required" mean the job is open to Nigerians?

No. The tool requirement and the location rules are separate. Read the ad's location section and the application form's country list before you apply.

How long does it take to become comfortable with HubSpot?

Most of the core skills take a few weeks of regular use. An evening or two gets you through the Academy course, and a practice week with the free CRM makes the records and deals board familiar. Working real sequences and calls in a job is where it becomes second nature.

Key takeaways

  • In remote sales, HubSpot is where your manager sees your work, so log calls, emails and deal changes as they happen.
  • The free CRM covers contacts, companies, deals and basic email, while sequences need Professional and calling needs Starter or above (as of October 2026).
  • HubSpot Academy's Sales Hub Software certification is free and takes about two hours plus an exam.
  • Show HubSpot skill with specific CV bullets, the certificate and a practice project, not a one-word tools list.
  • An ad that asks for HubSpot says nothing about whether Nigerians can apply. Check the location rules separately.
