Remote Virtual Assistant Jobs for Part-Time Workers: A Guide for Nigerians
How Nigerians can find part-time virtual assistant jobs: hours, which tasks fit, time zones, eligibility checks, pay maths in naira and scams to avoid.

Yes, you can work as a virtual assistant part-time from Nigeria, usually 10 to 25 hours a week for one or two foreign clients. Most of that work is contract or freelance rather than salaried, and a good share of agency-advertised part-time VA roles are restricted to other countries. Getting hired depends on two things: picking work that fits limited hours, and showing clients exactly when you're available.
This guide is for people fitting VA work around a day job, university, NYSC or family. It covers the forms part-time VA work takes and the tasks that suit short hours. It also shows how to check whether an ad accepts Nigerian applicants, which client time zones fit your free hours, and what part-time income looks like once converted to naira. We use real ads we opened in October 2026 and label every hypothetical figure.
Quick answer
Part-time virtual assistant jobs are remote admin roles of roughly 10 to 25 hours a week, paid hourly, by a monthly retainer or per task. Nigerians can get them, mostly as contractors through direct clients, freelance marketplaces and some agencies. Many agency ads, though, accept only applicants in the Philippines, South Africa or Latin America, so check the location line before applying. Inbox, calendar, social media scheduling, e-commerce listings and research all suit part-time hours.
What a part-time virtual assistant job actually looks like
"Part-time" in VA work means one of three things, and each suits a different life. Work out which one you're applying for before you agree a rate.
| Arrangement | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed shift | Same hours daily, e.g. 4 hours a day | Students with fixed timetables |
| Retainer block | Set hours a month, e.g. 20 or 40 | People with day jobs |
| Task-based | Paid per task or project, done async | Irregular schedules, parents |
Fixed shift
A fixed shift means you are online and responsive for a set window, usually during the client's morning. One live ad we opened on 27 October 2026, Wing's Part Time General Virtual Assistant role, runs from 5am to 9am US Pacific time. Shift roles pay the most predictably but give you the least freedom.
Retainer block
A retainer is a monthly package of hours, such as 20 or 40, paid in advance or at month end. The client sends tasks through the month and you finish them within agreed turnaround times (often 24 hours). This is the arrangement that fits best around a 9-to-5 in Lagos or Abuja, because most of the work can be done in the evening.
Task-based work
Task-based work is paid per output: 50 product listings, a cleaned contact spreadsheet, a month of scheduled posts. Marketplaces like Upwork and Fiverr are full of these jobs. Income swings more from month to month, but you control when you work.
Which virtual assistant tasks suit part-time hours
Tasks that can wait a few hours suit part-timers. Tasks that need someone answering immediately don't, unless you take a fixed shift. Here is how common VA niches compare.
| VA niche | Fit for part-time | Typical tools |
|---|---|---|
| Inbox and calendar | Good, with agreed check-in times | Gmail, Outlook, Calendly |
| Social media scheduling | Very good, batch work | Buffer, Later, Meta Business Suite, Canva |
| E-commerce listings | Very good, async | Shopify, eBay, Amazon Seller Central |
| Research and data entry | Very good, async | Google Sheets, Excel, Airtable |
| Podcast or YouTube admin | Good, weekly cycles | Notion, Trello, Descript |
| Appointment setting | Shift only, live calls | HubSpot, GoHighLevel, dialers |
| Executive support | Weak unless shift-based | Slack, Google Workspace |
| Phone reception | Weak, needs live cover | VoIP systems |
Part-time VA ads mostly fall into the batchable categories. When we opened the Assist World jobs board on 27 October 2026, its part-time listings included a Virtual Assistant for eBay and Whatnot listings, a Remote Studio and Administrative Assistant, a Digital Marketing Virtual Assistant and several part-time executive assistant roles.
If you are still choosing a VA niche, our virtual assistant career guide covers the skills, tools and courses for each path. The broader list of VA roles open to Nigerians publishes with this series.
Can Nigerians get part-time VA jobs with foreign companies?
Yes, but where you apply matters. An international part-time VA ad only accepts you if its location line includes Nigeria, Africa or worldwide, or if the client is hiring a contractor and doesn't restrict location. A lot of agency-advertised part-time VA work is reserved for specific countries.
The ads we opened in October 2026 show the pattern:
- Assist World (Lever board, checked 27 October 2026): none of the 30 listed roles mentioned Nigeria or worldwide. Every role listed South Africa, often together with the Philippines, Colombia, Argentina or Mexico.
- Wing (Lever ad, checked 27 October 2026): the part-time VA role listed Manila, Philippines, and paid in Philippine pesos (up to PHP 12,500 at entry level).
- Remote4Africa VA category (checked 27 October 2026): a mix of "Global", "Worldwide" and South Africa-only ads. One administrative and executive assistant role had "Part-Time" in its title and was listed as Global, but most listings were members-only.
- 20four7VA (careers page, checked 27 October 2026): says it offers opportunities to VAs "worldwide" but does not list eligible countries. Email the company before assuming Nigeria qualifies.
The takeaway is not that Nigerians are shut out. VA agencies often recruit from countries where they already have payroll, training and time-zone set-ups. Our explainer on why some remote jobs exclude Nigerians goes into the reasons.
Agency, marketplace or direct client: which route is most open?
| Route | Open to Nigeria? | Part-time fit |
|---|---|---|
| VA agency (e.g. staffing firms) | Varies, often restricted | Good, set hours |
| Freelance marketplace | Usually yes, account rules apply | Very good |
| Direct client (LinkedIn, referrals) | Yes, if they pay you | Very good |
| Job board listing | Check each ad | Varies |
Freelance marketplaces and direct clients are usually the most open routes for Nigerians, because the client pays a contractor rather than employing someone in a specific country. Check the platform's own country rules and payout options when you sign up, as these change. Our guide to finding international VA clients covers outreach in detail.
How to check a part-time VA ad in two minutes
- Read the location line, then search the description for "located in", "must reside", "Philippines", "LATAM", "US only" or "EMEA".
- Check the currency. Pay in pesos or rand is a sign the role is tied to that country.
- Check the shift hours and convert them to Lagos time (tables below).
- Check the engagement type: contractor, employee via an employer of record, or freelance.
- Open the application form. Country drop-downs that include Nigeria are encouraging, but they don't prove eligibility. One Uptalent VA ad we opened offered full-time, part-time and contract options, yet the page gave no eligible countries. When unsure, email and ask.
Fitting VA work around a day job, school or family: time zones
Part-time VA work succeeds or fails on time zones. Your free hours have to overlap with when the client needs you, or the work has to be truly async. Nigeria is on WAT (UTC+1) all year with no daylight saving, so the gap to the US and UK moves twice a year.
| Client's hours | Lagos time (summer) | Lagos time (winter) |
|---|---|---|
| London 9am to 1pm | 9am to 1pm | 10am to 2pm |
| Berlin or Paris 9am to 1pm | 8am to 12pm | 9am to 1pm |
| New York 9am to 1pm | 2pm to 6pm | 3pm to 7pm |
| New York 1pm to 5pm | 6pm to 10pm | 7pm to 11pm |
| Los Angeles 5am to 9am | 1pm to 5pm | 2pm to 6pm |
| Sydney 2pm to 6pm | 4am to 8am or 5am to 9am | 4am to 8am or 5am to 9am |
UK clocks went back on 25 October 2026 and US clocks go back on 1 November 2026, so use the winter column from November. (Sydney's offset changes on a different calendar, which is why its row gives two windows rather than splitting by our seasons.)
How this plays out in practice:
- Day job until 5pm or 6pm: US East Coast afternoons (6pm to 10pm Lagos in summer) are the natural match. That's a long day, so be honest with yourself about weekday stamina.
- University timetable: UK and European mornings work on free days. Async retainer work fits around lectures and exams. See our guide to balancing remote work with university.
- Parents with school runs: task-based work done during school hours, or early-morning Australian windows, gives you control. Our page on remote jobs for working mothers covers more options.
Check your day-job contract first
Many Nigerian employment contracts have exclusivity, conflict-of-interest or confidentiality clauses. Read yours before taking a VA client, particularly if you work in banking, telecoms or a regulated role, and never do client work on your employer's laptop or network. If the clause is unclear, ask HR in writing. That beats finding out during a disciplinary meeting.
NYSC corps members and students should check any scheme or institution rules too. Our guide for Nigerian students and fresh graduates covers the NYSC angle.
How much part-time virtual assistant work pays
Part-time VA pay for Nigeria-based workers is far lower than US pay and varies widely by client, niche and route. No reliable published survey covers part-time VA rates for Nigerians, so treat the figures below as reference points, not a market average.
- US benchmark (not what Nigerians are offered): the US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median pay for secretaries and administrative assistants at $23.23 an hour ($48,310 a year) as of May 2025. These are US-based workers, mostly full-time. Clients hiring offshore VAs pay well below this.
- A live offshore listing: in the Remote4Africa VA category, checked 27 October 2026, full-time virtual executive assistant roles for the Philippines and South Africa listed $700 to $800 a month. A part-time role would normally pay a proportion of that.
- A live part-time ad: the Wing part-time VA role paid up to PHP 12,500 at entry level, which shows the low end of the agency market.
For role-specific dollar and naira figures, see our virtual assistant salary guide. The article on VA jobs that pay in dollars publishes with this series.
Part-time income maths
Example (hypothetical): the rates below are illustrations, not quoted market rates. Monthly figures use 52 weeks ÷ 12 (about 4.33 weeks a month) and the WorkRemote house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026). They are before platform fees, transfer costs and tax.
| Weekly hours and rate | Dollars a month | Naira a month (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| 10 hours at $5 an hour | $217 | ₦295,000 |
| 20 hours at $6 an hour | $520 | ₦708,000 |
| 20 hours at $10 an hour | $867 | ₦1,180,000 |
Two things change the real figure. Marketplaces deduct a service fee, and moving dollars into naira costs something through whichever app you use. Our guide to receiving dollar payments in Nigeria compares Grey, Raenest, Cleva, Payoneer and others.
Hourly or retainer?
Example (hypothetical): a client offers a 40-hour monthly retainer for $320. That works out at $8 an hour, but only if the work actually fits into 40 hours. Before you accept a retainer, ask:
- What happens to unused hours: do they roll over or expire?
- What is the rate for hours beyond the block?
- What turnaround is expected, and does it suit your evenings?
- Is payment in advance, at month end or after approval?
Retainers suit day-job holders because they give predictable income and flexible timing. Hourly contracts suit irregular work. Setting the number itself is covered in our planned guide on pricing VA services.
Setting up for part-time VA work in Nigeria
Part-timers often skimp on set-up because the hours are short. Clients notice anyway. A four-hour shift lost to a NEPA outage at 2pm is a quarter of your week gone.
The Wing ad gives a useful real-world benchmark for what VA employers ask for:
- A computer with at least a 1.8 GHz processor and 4GB RAM
- Main internet of at least 25 Mbps
- Backup internet of at least 10 Mbps
- A noise-cancelling USB headset and a working webcam
In Nigeria that usually means:
- Power: an inverter with batteries, a solar set-up or a generator that covers your working window. If your DisCo band gives you unreliable evening supply and your clients are in the US, plan for that window specifically.
- Internet: two providers, or a MiFi plus a phone hotspot on a different network. Starlink is available in Nigeria if you can afford it; check the current price before buying.
- Accounts: a domiciliary account or a dollar receiving app set up before your first invoice, with your NIN and BVN ready for verification.
How to find and land part-time VA work
- Choose one niche that fits short hours. "Social media scheduling VA for coaches" is easier to sell than "general VA available for anything".
- Fix your available hours in Lagos time and the client's time. Put them on your CV, LinkedIn and every proposal.
- Build two or three samples. A cleaned spreadsheet, a sample content calendar, an inbox-sorting workflow written up as a one-page process. Our guide to building a VA portfolio covers this.
- Pick your routes. Combine one marketplace profile, direct LinkedIn outreach to small business owners, and filtered job boards. On WorkRemote.ng, the admin and HR listings show where applicants may live on each listing, and you can filter by job type.
- Apply with an availability-first message (sample below).
- Prepare for a short video call or a test task. Our virtual assistant interview questions cover what clients typically ask.
- Agree terms in writing: hours, rate, payment date, method, turnaround and what counts as out of scope.
- Start with one client. Add a second only once the first is stable. Our planned guide to managing multiple VA clients covers the juggling.
Example (hypothetical): an availability-first application message
"Hi Sarah, I'm a part-time virtual assistant based in Lagos, Nigeria (WAT, UTC+1). I'm available 20 hours a week: Monday to Friday, 6pm to 10pm my time, which is 12pm to 4pm in New York from November. I handle inbox triage, calendar management and Canva social posts. I've attached a sample weekly content calendar. I reply to messages within two hours during those windows and within 12 hours otherwise. Would a 15-minute call this week suit you?"
The specific hours do the selling here. Clients hiring part-timers mostly worry about reachability, so answer that question before they ask it.

Getting paid, contracts and tax
Most part-time VA arrangements with foreign clients are contractor relationships: you invoice, nobody deducts your tax, and you get no paid leave or pension. Some agencies employ VAs through an employer of record, which is a different set-up with different paperwork. Our explainer on contractor versus employee arrangements sets out the differences.
Part-time foreign income is still income in Nigeria. For filing obligations under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, read our tax guide for remote workers in Nigeria. Keep every invoice and payment record from day one, even when the amounts are small.
Mistakes and scams to avoid as a part-time VA
Common mistakes
- Overcommitting. Taking 25 hours on top of a 45-hour day job usually ends with missed deadlines within a month. Start at 10 to 15 hours.
- Vague availability. "Flexible" sounds helpful but makes clients nervous. Give fixed windows.
- Scope creep on retainers. A 20-hour retainer that quietly becomes 30 hours is a pay cut. Track your time in Toggl or Clockify and share reports.
- Ignoring time-zone changes. Your US client's 1pm moves an hour later in Lagos when US clocks change. Update your calendar on the changeover dates.
- Undercharging to win the first client and never revisiting it. Agree a review after three months.
Scam warning signs in part-time VA ads
Part-time and "flexible" VA ads attract scammers because the targets are often students and people who need extra income quickly. Walk away if:
- You are asked to pay for training, a "starter kit", software or a registration fee before starting.
- The "client" sends you a cheque or a transfer and asks you to forward part of it.
- The whole process happens on Telegram or WhatsApp with no company website, contract or video call.
- You are asked for your BVN, bank login or passport scan before any verified offer.
- The pay is high for the hours ($30 an hour for "liking posts", for instance).
- The role is "commission-only" but described as a salaried part-time job.
Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria covers the wider patterns, and the planned article on avoiding VA scams focuses on this job type.
Frequently asked questions
Can I be a virtual assistant part-time while working a full-time job in Nigeria?
Yes, if your employment contract allows outside work and you pick async work or clients whose hours fall after your workday. US East Coast clients suit evenings in Lagos. Read your contract's exclusivity and conflict-of-interest clauses first, and never use your employer's equipment.
How many hours do part-time virtual assistants usually work?
Usually 10 to 25 hours a week, though some retainers are as small as 10 hours a month. Live part-time agency ads we checked in October 2026 often used four-hour daily shifts, such as 5am to 9am US Pacific time.
How much does a part-time virtual assistant earn in Nigeria?
It depends on the niche, client and route, and no reliable survey covers Nigerian part-time VA rates. As an illustration, 20 hours a week at $6 an hour comes to about $520 a month, roughly ₦708,000 at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN, 23 October 2026), before fees and tax.
Are part-time virtual assistant jobs open to Nigerians?
Many are, especially through freelance marketplaces and direct clients. A lot of agency ads, however, accept only applicants in the Philippines, South Africa or Latin America. Always check the location line, the pay currency and the description before applying.
Do I need experience to get a part-time VA job?
Not always, but it helps. Some ads ask for a year of VA experience, as Wing's part-time role did when we checked. Without experience, samples of your work and a clear niche make up a lot of the difference.
Is a part-time VA job a contract or employment?
Usually a contract. Most foreign clients engage part-time VAs as independent contractors, which means you invoice them and handle your own tax. Some agencies use an employer of record, so check the contract.
What equipment do I need to work as a part-time VA from Nigeria?
A reliable laptop, a headset, a webcam, main and backup internet, and power backup for your working hours. One live VA ad asked for at least 25 Mbps main internet, 10 Mbps backup and 4GB of RAM.
Can students or NYSC corps members do part-time VA work?
Yes, as long as it fits your timetable and any scheme or institution rules. Async retainer work fits best around lectures and primary assignment days. Start small, around 10 hours a week.
Key takeaways
- Part-time VA work comes in three forms (fixed shift, retainer and task-based), and retainers usually fit best around a day job.
- Batchable tasks such as social media scheduling, e-commerce listings, research and inbox management suit limited hours better than live phone or executive support.
- Many agency part-time VA ads we checked in October 2026 were limited to the Philippines, South Africa or Latin America. Marketplaces and direct clients are generally more open to Nigerians.
- Convert every shift into Lagos time and update it when UK and US clocks change. Put fixed availability in every application.
- Part-time income in naira can be meaningful, but work it out after fees, transfer costs and tax, and protect it with power and internet backup.
Next steps
Pick one niche, write your weekly availability in both Lagos time and your target clients' time, and build two work samples this week. Then browse the remote admin and VA listings on WorkRemote.ng, check where applicants may live on each one, and filter by job type for part-time roles. After a search, use "Get email updates" to receive a free daily digest of new matching jobs. If you'd like the WorkRemote team to rewrite your CV and LinkedIn profile for VA roles, that's part of Premium membership. Applying to jobs on WorkRemote is always free.
