Vintage style office workers having desk job

The remote jobs that suit office professionals are usually the same jobs you already do, done for a company abroad: executive assistant, operations, bookkeeping, HR, compliance, sales and project coordination. Your years in an office count. What changes is how you show that experience, how you get paid and what you give up when you leave a Nigerian payroll.

This guide is for people who have spent years in a bank, corporate head office, NGO, public agency or SME and want to work remotely without starting from zero. It covers which office roles carry over to remote work and what they pay in live ads open to Nigeria (as of October 2026). It also covers what happens to your pension and HMO cover, how to rewrite an office CV for remote employers, and a 90-day plan for switching while you're still employed. We also say plainly where remote work is a worse deal than the job you have now.

Quick answer

Office professionals in Nigeria usually move into remote work through roles like their current ones: executive or operations assistant, bookkeeper, accounts payable, HR or recruitment, compliance or KYC, sales development and project coordination. Many international roles open to Nigerians are contracts paid in dollars with no pension or health cover. Compare full packages before resigning, and apply while you're still employed.

Why office experience transfers better than people think

Remote employers aren't looking for "remote experience" as a separate skill. They're looking for people who can do a defined job with little supervision. If you have reconciled accounts every month for six years, prepared board papers or onboarded new staff, you already have most of what a remote finance, admin or HR role needs.

What's missing for most office professionals is usually a few gaps, not the core skill:

  • Written, asynchronous communication. In an office, you walk over and ask. In a remote team spread across Lagos, London and Texas, you write a clear Slack message or a short document and wait for a reply hours later.
  • Tool fluency. Many Nigerian offices still run on email, Excel and paper files. Remote teams tend to use Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, Slack or Teams, Notion or Asana, Zoom and Loom.
  • Evidence of results. Office CVs list duties. Remote hiring managers who can't meet you in person want numbers and outcomes.
  • Self-management. Nobody sees you arrive at 8am. Your output is the only proof you worked.

All four can be learnt in weeks, not years. That's why an experienced office worker is often better placed than a fresh graduate with a certificate.

Which office roles become which remote jobs

The table below maps common Nigerian office functions to remote job titles that ask for similar experience. Each WorkRemote role guide covers skills, tools and how to get hired from Nigeria.

Office roles that are hard to take remote from Nigeria

Some office work doesn't carry over well, and you should know before you plan around it:

  • Roles tied to a Nigerian licence or a physical desk, such as bank tellers, cashiers and front-office staff handling cash or documents.
  • Regulated professional work abroad. A US tax preparer or UK solicitor role usually needs that country's licence. Your ICAN or Nigerian Bar membership doesn't transfer automatically.
  • Senior general management. Heads of department and general managers are rarely hired remotely from Nigeria by foreign firms. The realistic route is a specialist role (finance, operations, compliance) that you grow from.
  • Roles restricted by work authorisation. Many remote ads say "US only" or "must be eligible to work in the UK". That restriction is about where you live and your legal right to work, not your skills. Our guide on checking whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents explains how to read these lines.

What remote roles open to Nigerians actually pay

Pay depends on the employer, the role and the hiring route: direct or through a staffing firm. Real figures are more useful than averages, so here is one live example.

Scale Army Careers describes itself as a recruiting and placement service that matches professionals, mainly in Latin America and Africa, with US companies, and handles contracts and payments. As of October 2026, its listings on Remote Rocketship named Nigeria among the eligible locations, alongside Egypt, Argentina, Ethiopia and South Africa. The listings were tagged as contract roles. Some of the office-type roles shown:

Role (contract, remote)Advertised pay a monthNaira equivalent
Operations Assistant$1,000 to $1,200₦1,362,000 to ₦1,634,400
Executive Assistant$1,300 to $1,600₦1,770,600 to ₦2,179,200
RevOps Administrator$1,600₦2,179,200
Project Finance Coordinator$2,000 to $2,600₦2,724,000 to ₦3,541,200
Onboarding Project Coordinator$2,300₦3,132,600

Pay figures are from job ads listed in October 2026 and are gross, before payment fees and tax. Naira conversions use ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026). The executive assistant figure comes from Remote Rocketship's Nigeria executive assistant listings. Ads close and change, so open the live ad before relying on any number.

Compare that with US local pay. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median pay of project management specialists at $102,320 a year (May 2025). That figure is for US-based workers. Remote roles hired from Nigeria are usually paid well below US local rates, often a fraction of them, especially through staffing firms. Treat the BLS figure as the ceiling of the market, not as what you'll be offered.

For a deeper look at pay by field, see our guide to remote jobs that pay in dollars.

Office package vs remote contract: what you gain and lose

A dollar figure can look much bigger than your naira salary and still leave you worse off once you count what your employer pays for. Many international remote roles open to Nigerians are contractor arrangements. As a contractor you send invoices and receive payment, with no Nigerian employer deducting pension or paying for health cover.

ItemTypical Nigerian office jobTypical remote contract

Health coverEmployer HMO plan, oftenRarely; you buy your own
Extras13th month, leave allowance, sometimesUsually none
Paid leaveSet by your contractVaries; sometimes unpaid
Exit termsNotice period in contractOften short notice on either side

Not every remote role is a contract. Some companies hire through an employer of record (EOR), a firm that legally employs you in Nigeria on the foreign company's behalf and may offer benefits. Our guide on contractor vs employee status for Nigerians explains the difference and what to ask.

Example (hypothetical): comparing two offers properly

Example (hypothetical): Tola is an admin manager on ₦700,000 a month gross. She also gets an employer HMO plan, employer pension contributions, a 13th month and a leave allowance. She's offered a remote executive assistant contract at $1,400 a month, about ₦1,906,800 at ₦1,362 to $1.

To compare fairly, she should:

  1. Add up her full annual office package: 12 months' salary, 13th month, leave allowance, the employer's pension contribution and the value of the HMO plan. Then divide by 12.
  2. From the remote offer, subtract monthly costs she would now carry herself: a private HMO plan, voluntary pension savings, fuel or solar running costs, a second internet line and payment-app fees.
  3. Set aside money for tax, since she now reports her own income. Our guide to tax for remote workers in Nigeria covers how that works under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025.
  4. Compare what's left. Then weigh what money doesn't show: job security, career track and how much she values the time she'd save on commuting.

In many cases the remote offer still wins clearly. Sometimes it doesn't, especially if your current employer pays generous allowances, so do the sums before you resign. Our guide to comparing international salary offers has a fuller worksheet.

Your pension and health cover after leaving salaried work

Your Retirement Savings Account (RSA) with your Pension Fund Administrator (PFA) remains yours when you leave paid employment. What stops is the monthly contribution from you and your employer through payroll.

If you go independent, Nigeria's National Pension Commission (PenCom) runs a voluntary Micro Pension Plan for self-employed people and workers in organisations with fewer than three employees. According to PenCom, as reported by Voice of Nigeria, contributors agree an amount based on their earnings. Up to 40% of savings can be withdrawn for emergencies and the remaining 60% is kept until retirement. Those details come from a 2023 report, so check the current rules, and how your existing RSA would be handled, with your PFA before you rely on them.

Health cover works the same way. Once you leave your employer's HMO plan, buy an individual or family plan before your last day, not after a hospital visit.

How to switch while you're still employed: a 90-day plan

Don't resign first and job-hunt second. Remote hiring for international roles often takes several weeks from application to offer, and many applications get no reply. Your salary is your runway.

Before you start: read your employment contract

Look for clauses on outside work, conflicts of interest and confidentiality. Some Nigerian employers, banks especially, restrict staff from taking paid work elsewhere. Never use your employer's laptop, email or client data for your job search. If you're unsure, ask HR in general terms or get legal advice.

Days 1 to 30: decide on one target role and fix your gaps

  1. Choose one remote title from the mapping table that matches your strongest experience. Don't apply as "anything remote".
  2. Read 20 live ads for that title and note the tools that keep coming up (for example QuickBooks or Xero for bookkeeping, HubSpot or Salesforce for sales, Asana or Notion for operations).
  3. Spend evenings getting hands-on with the two or three tools you don't know. Most offer free trials or free tiers.
  4. Set up your home workspace: an inverter or solar backup, two internet options (such as a MiFi plus a phone hotspot), a headset and a quiet corner for calls.

Days 31 to 60: rebuild your CV and LinkedIn for remote employers

  1. Turn duties into results (see the examples below).
  2. Add a short summary line that says the role you want and that you work from Nigeria in WAT (UTC+1).
  3. Open a payment route that receives dollars before you need it. Our guide on receiving dollar payments in Nigeria compares the options.
  4. Start applying: 5 to 10 well-targeted applications a week beats 50 copy-paste ones.

Days 61 to 90: interview, compare, then resign

  1. Interview during leave days or outside office hours. Many US-facing roles hold interviews in the Lagos afternoon or evening anyway.
  2. When an offer arrives, check the contract before signing: payment terms, notice, who owns your work and what happens if they end the contract. See our guide on what to check in a remote work contract.
  3. Resign only after you've signed and, ideally, after the first payment has arrived. Serve your notice properly. You may want a reference from this employer later.

If a full switch feels risky, a part-time remote role alongside your job can test the arrangement first, provided your contract allows it.

Rewriting an office CV for remote employers

Office CVs in Nigeria often open with a long objective statement and list every responsibility. Remote hiring managers skim. They want to see the role you're targeting, the tools you use and what changed because of your work.

Typical office bulletRewritten for a remote employer
Responsible for monthly reconciliationsReconciled 14 bank and vendor accounts monthly in Excel; closed books 3 days earlier
Handled recruitment for the branchRan end-to-end hiring for 30+ roles a year, from job ad to offer
Managed the MD's scheduleManaged calendar, travel and board papers for an MD across 3 cities
In charge of KYC documentationReviewed 200+ customer KYC files a month against CBN requirements

Use your own real numbers. The figures above are illustrations of the format, not targets. Leave out your date of birth, state of origin and photo; most international employers don't expect them.

Two more changes help office professionals in particular:

  • Translate Nigerian titles. "Assistant Manager, Operations" means different things in different banks. Add a few words on scope: team size, volume, budget.
  • Show remote-ready habits. Mention any work you did across branches or with offshore partners, any process you documented and any tool rollout you led.

If you'd rather have a person do this, WorkRemote Premium (₦29,999 a month) includes a CV and LinkedIn rewrite by our team. Applying for jobs is always free, for members and non-members alike.

Working hours: what remote really looks like from Lagos

Leaving the office doesn't always mean leaving office hours. It may mean taking on someone else's office hours. Before you apply, check which time zone the role covers:

  • UK roles: 9am to 5pm London is 10am to 6pm in Lagos in winter (GMT) and the same 9am to 5pm in summer (BST).
  • US East Coast roles: 9am to 5pm New York is 3pm to 11pm in Lagos from 1 November 2026 (EST) and 2pm to 10pm in summer (EDT). The Scale Army Careers ads above serve US clients, so expect afternoons and evenings.
  • European roles: Central European Time matches Lagos in winter and is one hour ahead in summer, which is the most comfortable fit.

If your household or your health can't handle late evenings, filter for UK, European and African companies.

Mistakes experienced professionals make when going remote

  • Resigning before signing. An offer email isn't a contract, and a contract isn't a first payment.
  • Applying below your level out of fear. Ten years in finance shouldn't mean applying for data entry. Aim for roles that use your experience, even if you need a tool or two first.
  • Judging an offer by the dollar figure alone. Count the pension, HMO cover and allowances you're giving up.
  • Paying anyone for a job. Legitimate employers don't charge application, training or "equipment" fees. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria lists the warning signs.
  • Ignoring commission-only sales offers' fine print. Former sales executives get many of these. With no base pay, you carry all the risk.
  • Forgetting about tax. As a contractor, you're responsible for reporting your income. Keep records from the first invoice.

Where to look for remote roles that fit office experience

  • WorkRemote job listings. Listings at /jobs are remote roles open to applicants living in Nigeria. You can filter by category, for example admin and HR jobs or accounting jobs. WorkRemote reviews listings and aims to publish genuine remote roles open to applicants from Nigeria, but can't check every detail, and employers decide who they hire.
  • Staffing and placement firms that hire from Africa for foreign clients. These can be a good first remote job. Read who pays you, how and how often.
  • Company careers pages, especially companies with African operations or distributed teams. Check each ad's location line every time.
  • Your existing network. Former colleagues who already work remotely are often the fastest route in. Ask for a referral to a specific role, not "anything".

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a remote job without quitting my office job first?

Yes, and for most people it's the safer order. Apply in the evenings, interview outside office hours or on leave days, and resign only after signing a contract. Check your employment contract first, because some employers restrict outside work during your notice period or employment.

Will I earn more in a remote job than in my Nigerian office job?

Often, but not always. Remote contracts open to Nigerians in October 2026 advertised roughly $1,000 to $2,600 a month for operations, admin and coordination roles. Once you count lost pension contributions, HMO cover, allowances and your own power and internet costs, the gap can shrink. Compare full packages, not headline figures.

Do I need a new certificate to move from office work to remote work?

Usually not. Employers mostly want proof that you can do the job and use their tools. A tool-specific certificate (for example in QuickBooks, HubSpot or Salesforce) can help if your target ads keep asking for it, but your track record matters more.

What happens to my pension if I leave paid employment for a remote contract?

Your RSA stays yours, but payroll contributions stop. PenCom's voluntary Micro Pension Plan lets self-employed people keep saving. Ask your PFA how your existing account would be handled before you leave.

Is it too late to go remote after 15 or 20 years in an office?

No. Long experience is an advantage in operations, finance, HR and compliance roles, as long as you can show you're comfortable with remote tools. Our guide to remote jobs for professionals over 40 covers age-related concerns in more detail.

Can a Nigerian accountant work remotely for a foreign company?

Yes, in roles such as bookkeeping, accounts payable and receivable, and financial analysis, where the employer accepts applicants in Nigeria. Roles that sign off tax returns or audits abroad usually need that country's professional licence, so read each ad's requirements.

Which skills should office workers learn first for remote jobs?

Start with clear written communication and the core collaboration tools: Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, Slack or Teams, a project tool like Asana or Notion, and video calls. Then add the one or two specialist tools that come up most in ads for your target role.

Are remote jobs from staffing firms legitimate?

Many are, but check each one. A genuine firm explains the client, the contract, the pay and the payment method, and never asks you for money. If a "recruiter" asks for a fee, sends a cheque to deposit or moves you to Telegram for the "interview", stop.

Key takeaways

  • The best remote roles for office professionals usually mirror the work you already do: admin, operations, finance, HR, compliance, sales and project coordination.
  • Live contract ads open to Nigeria in October 2026 advertised about $1,000 to $2,600 a month for these roles, well below US local pay.
  • Many international remote roles are contracts with no pension, HMO cover or allowances, so compare full packages before resigning.
  • Your RSA stays yours when you leave payroll; the voluntary Micro Pension Plan is one way to keep saving.
  • Switch while employed: fix your tool gaps, rewrite your CV around results, and resign only after a signed contract.
  • Check the time zone a role serves; US-facing work often means Lagos afternoons and evenings.
