How to become a remote paralegal from Nigeria

Nigerian law graduates and lawyers already have most of what a US firm needs from a remote paralegal: legal reasoning, careful drafting and comfort with procedure. What they usually lack is US procedure and software, and that gap is learnable. Several US legal staffing companies and small firms hire remote paralegals and case managers from any country, as long as you work their hours.

Be clear about the limit. Being called to the Nigerian Bar does not let you practise US or UK law. In a remote role you prepare work for a supervising attorney, who signs it and gives the advice. Some ads even ask for a law degree while paying the same as non-lawyer roles, so go in with realistic expectations.

What a remote paralegal does

What you do depends on the practice area. In personal injury, you collect medical records and bills, track treatment, open insurance claims and build the settlement demand package. In civil litigation, you draft pleadings, discovery requests and responses for attorney review, manage the litigation calendar and e-file documents with the court. In US business immigration, you prepare petitions such as O-1, EB-1A or EB-2 NIW, gather evidence and track USCIS deadlines.

Across all of them, you are the person who keeps the file in order. Every document is saved where it should be, every deadline is calendared twice, and the attorney can open the file and find what they need without asking you.

What you do not do is give legal advice, sign filings or represent clients. Clients will ask you, "Should I accept this offer?" The answer is always that the attorney will advise.

A day in the role

  1. Check the litigation calendar for the next 14 days and remind the attorney of hearings, depositions and response deadlines
  2. Draft discovery responses from the client's answers and the template, flagging anything the attorney must decide
  3. Request medical records from three providers and follow up on one that has ignored two requests
  4. E-file a motion the attorney signed and save the stamped copy to the case file in Clio
  5. Update a client by phone or email on the status of their case, without giving advice
  6. Prepare an exhibit list and organise exhibits for an immigration petition
  7. Log time or tasks in the practice management system so the firm can bill or track the matter

Skills you need

Core skills

US civil procedure basics

Litigation ads ask for an understanding of the Rules of Civil Procedure: pleadings, discovery, motions and deadlines. Nigerian procedure is similar in structure but different in detail.

Legal drafting

Pleadings, discovery, demand letters and petition letters are drafted by paralegals and reviewed by attorneys. Clean first drafts save attorney time, which is the whole point of hiring you.

Calendaring and deadline control

A missed court deadline can lose a case. Firms trust paralegals who calendar everything and double-check.

Practice management software

Clio, MyCase, Smart Advocate and similar systems run the firm's files, tasks and documents. Ads name them.

Legal research

Westlaw or Lexis experience is listed as preferred in some ads; at minimum you should find statutes, rules and court forms quickly.

Medical records and damages (personal injury)

Personal injury firms are among the biggest remote employers. Reading medical bills and building demand packages is a specific, valued skill.

Immigration petitions

US business immigration firms hire internationally for O-1, EB-1A and EB-2 NIW work, which is document-heavy and well suited to remote paralegals.

E-filing

US courts file electronically, and each court has its own portal and rules.

Soft skills

Clear written English

Most of your work is written and reviewed by a US attorney. Short, plain, correct sentences matter more than legal flourish.

Confidentiality

You will hold privileged information about clients' injuries, families and immigration status.

Client empathy

Personal injury and family law clients are often stressed or grieving. You speak with them more than the attorney does.

Getting hired from Nigeria

Look at US legal staffing companies that place remote staff with US firms, and at small and mid-size firms in personal injury, immigration and family law. Job Duck, for example, had many remote paralegal, case manager and legal assistant roles open to all countries in October 2026. Many preferred Spanish speakers, but not all did.

Read each ad's requirements closely. Job Duck's Personal Injury Litigation Assistant role asked for a law degree, while its Legal Case Specialist role only preferred litigation experience. Oguz Law's immigration paralegal role wanted two years of US business immigration experience and gave weight to that over a law degree.

On your CV, translate your experience. "Called to the Nigerian Bar, 2022" should sit next to what you actually did: "Drafted 40+ pleadings and motions; managed a calendar of 120 active matters; prepared exhibits for trial." Add any US-style work, even a mock demand package or a sample discovery response you wrote for practice.

Plan your nights. US Eastern time 8:30am to 5:30pm is 1:30pm to 10:30pm in Lagos during US summer time and 2:30pm to 11:30pm in winter; Pacific time is three hours later still. You need power and internet that last past midnight, a headset, and a quiet room for client calls.

Payment is usually monthly in dollars through the staffing company. Ask how they pay (Payoneer, Deel, bank transfer) and whether they pay public holidays.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Telling a US client what they should do. That is legal advice, and it can get the firm in trouble.
  • Assuming Nigerian Bar status lets you practise abroad. It does not, and US firms will not market you as an attorney.
  • Missing a deadline because it was only in one calendar. Calendar everything twice.
  • Taking a Pacific time role without planning for working past 1am Lagos time most nights.
  • Paying "agencies" upfront for US paralegal placement. Real staffing companies do not charge candidates.

Questions people ask

Can a Nigerian lawyer work as a paralegal for a US law firm?

Yes. Many US firms and staffing companies hire international paralegals who work under a US attorney's supervision. You cannot give US legal advice or sign filings, but drafting, case management and research are open to you.

Do I need a US paralegal certificate?

Usually not. Most remote ads ask for experience and skills, not certification. NALA's Certified Paralegal credential is voluntary and needs your foreign degree evaluated, so consider it once you have a year of US paralegal experience.

Can I be a remote paralegal without a law degree?

Yes, for many roles. Some ads only prefer litigation or legal support experience. Others, such as some personal injury litigation assistant roles, ask for a law degree.

How much do remote paralegals from Nigeria earn?

Published remote paralegal and case manager roles open to all countries paid about $1,150 to $1,320 a month in October 2026, roughly $13,800 to $15,800 a year. Our paralegal salary page lists the sources.

Do I need to speak Spanish?

No, but it helps. Many US personal injury and immigration firms serve Spanish-speaking clients, and bilingual roles are common. English-only roles exist too.

Can I work for UK law firms as a remote paralegal?

It is possible but less common than US work. Paralegal work in England is not a regulated title, and CILEX offers a Chartered Paralegal membership grade, but most remote offshore legal support we see is for US firms.
